7. MARY JANE3 SWINK (NANCY2 ROBISON, JAMES1) She married SAMUEL RATLIFF 11 September 1859 in Macon Co. Missouri7.

Notes for MARY JANE SWINK:

#

Mary J. Swink and Samuel Ratliff was married Sept., 11, 1859. They had three children William age 4, Martha age 2, James a baby and they were living in Macon County Missouri when the Civil War started. They lived on a farm, when some men came to neighborhood, the were soldiers or Rustlers (called today) they were killing people and burning their homes. Sam & Mary could see them knowing they would be next. Samuel took Mary and the three children out to a wood shed and hid them under some boards and etc., hoping the Rustlers wouldn't burn the shed he went to the house. When the men came they wanted to know for which side they stood the Union or Confederate's, they took Sam out to a tree where some men already had a rope ready to hang him. Now Sam had belong to Masonic Lodge for a number of years. He made some signs, the Rustlers took thier rope and rode away. Now Sam didn't lose any time hitching team to wagon then hiding Mary and the three children in the wagon and was on their way north. They settled in Oto County Nebraska in the fall of 1864. They had eight children born there. They moved back to Missouri in about the fall of 1880 and settled in Putnam County. One other son, my father, was born April 7, 1882. Remarks by Laura Maxwell Hostetler

In the year of 1914 Thomas and Fannie Maxwell moved with their 4 children,Otis ,Arta, Laura and Henry from Linnieus to Melstone Montana where they homesteaded on a trck of land 15 miles from Melstone. Here Papa and Mama built a log house where we lived until we moved into melstone. they hauled the log's from the river bottom I'd say about 3 miles away . they worked so hard and had many hardships during this time. Papa shipped a freight car from Missouri to Montana loaded with farm machinery , chickens and one team of horse(I beleive the horses were Old Dyke and Odie) Brother Charley went with the freight car out to Melstone taking care of the animals .However he didn't stay but returned at once to Purdin ,Missouri where he lived with Uncle Jim Mayer. I was told Uncle Jim was the reason Elizabeth was added to my name .It seems when he came to visit right after I was born he asked Mama why she had not named me Elizabeth after the only girl he had ever loved .Thus she added Elizabeth to my name making it Laura Susan Elizabeth Maxwell . Uncle Jim never married .

The family stayed on the homestead long enough to prove up on the land and receive their title or deed.

We moved to Melstone in the late fall of 1917 or early spring of 1918. Irwin (Tiny) was born in Melstone on July 5, 1918 . During this time Papa worked on the railroad. However we were not there many years when we moved to Olympia,Washington Where Papa worked in the saw mills. From there we moved to Prosser Washington where we raised apples ,alfalfa and milk cows.

From prosser Washington I lived in many places.North ,Dakota ,Montana,Wyoming and Minnesota. On the 25 of november 1942 during WWII I joined the Woman's Army Corp. at Butee Montana. I served till June 1948. During this time I was stationed at Daytona Beach Florida and Fort Frances E. Warren Wyoming ,Ft. Washington Camp Atterbury Indiana , and Fort Knox Kentucky Mo. Wichita Kansas City Mo. was discharged June 25 1948 at Fort Knox

As Mr. Hostetler was a M/Sgt in the united States Army we still traveled with 3 years spent in Goeppingin Germany .We settled in New Albany Indiana August 6 1956. Mr. Hostetler retired Nov. 1961 with 26 years in service..............
