Notes from Family tree, provided by Sue Lance, author unknown, likely Joseph Hancox b. 1867, son of George Hancox. In about 1801 Benjamin Hancox, Mursham Green, held services in chain shop. A John James used to call and preach. Later, Dudley Wood Chapel was built. Have copy of services dated May 10, 1829. A name that stands out today as one of the finest in the same district. It reads: Sermons, in aid of the above School, will be preached in The Methodist Chapel, Musham Green, on Sunday May 10, 1829, by Mr. John James of Wednesbury. (THE FOLLOWING SEEMS TO BE WRITTEN IN SAME HAND AS ABOVE) A few hundred years can still be traced backwards. (Signed) Mildred Hancox (likely Mildred HANCOX daughter of Joseph Hancox b. 1867) REGARDING THE FOUNDING OF CHAPEL AND CHAINSHOP: From: "Archives - Dudley MBC" According to a publication held here entitled Non-Parochial Registers of Dudley, the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel King Street, Dudley was erected between 1788 and 1790. Therefore it is unlikely Benjamin founded this chapel if he was born c.1785. I did find the following entry, which could well be your Benjamin Hancox, thus establishing a link with the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. John son of Benjamin & Margaret Hancox, born 16th December, 1812 baptised 17 Jan 1813 by J.S Pipe. There is a list of Wesleyan Church Ministers 1788-1837, and trustees in this publication, I could however, find no one with the surname Hancox. The Dudley Estate Archives holds an Agreement in 1905 for a Benjamin Hancox Jnr. of Cradley Heath: chain factory manager ( a trustee of Dudley Wood Wesleyan Chapel). The reference is DE 1/3/866. I do not know if this is of any significance to you. Chainmaking was a cottage industry, so it would be impossible to say exactly when the first chainmakers shop was set up. Joseph SILVERS (nailer) and Catherine PITT Information from Keith C. Lloyd, a Silvers family researcher Joseph Silvers Snr. [a nailer] died and his "son-in-law" Benjamin Hancox, together with a Joseph Robinson of Holly Hall were executors to his will. Joseph left all his numerous properties and holdings initially to his widow Catherine but on her decease they were to be split up between his sons and daughters. He left Benjamin a dwelling house & premises in Mill Street, Dudley then occupied by Thomas Clayton, and also the Nailshop and Pigsty situated nearby, then occupied by Joseph Heathcock and Joseph Naylor. Margaret got her father's bed and a one quarter share, with her sisters, of the residue of the estate that was not bequeathed elsewhere in the will. According to my records Margaret's first husband was Joseph whom she married in 1799 in Rowley Regis. In 1801 as Margaret NICKLIN she signed as a witness at her sister Priscilla's marriage to Wm. Morris at Kingswinford. This ceremony was immediately followed by the marriage of her brother Jesse Silvers to a cousin Eleanor Silvers. Their Children: .. 1.
