The Holcomb school is now without a home, the school house having been destroyed by fire Monday evening of last week. The origin of the blaze is unknown. Although homeless, the school is not friendless, as several homes were offered. School was held last week at the Mallula homestead, and a highly creditable Christmas program was rendered by the pupils. Miss Mabel Stuart, teacher of the Holcomb school, and also vice president of the district W.C.T.U. has organized a Loyal Temperance Legion among her pupils and the young people of that neighborhood. The object of the society is the teaching of temperance, kindness to animals, preliminary rule, elocution, and other ethical and literary subjects. The Legion will meet every other Sunday afternoon, alternating with the Sabbath school. -- From Camp Crook "Range Gazette." Miss Stuart will be remembered by many in Miller and a less number of friends in St. Lawrence. She taught in the Miller high school in 1909-'10, we believe, going from there to Harding Co to reside on a claim. At last election she was the Phohibition nominee for County Superintendent of Schools. ======================== |

James Moore, of this place, was found dead sitting in her chair a few moments
later by her daughter who went to give her medicine. TABOR---Death came suddenly to Mrs. Vaclav Hladky, a well known resident of the territory near Tabor. She was recovering from an attack of pneumonia. While at dinner she was attacked by heart failure and died almost instantly. She was 77 years of age. Mrs Hladky took up her residence in this vicinity in 1875. ABERDEEN---Merritt McPhea, aged 33, of Bowman, ND. and Will Connelly, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, were burned to death in a fire which destroyed the Sterling hotel at Bowman and the adjoining barber shop and restaurant. STROOL [anyone know where that is/was? csr]---A liveryman here has an unclaimed team of horses on his hands. Two weeks ago a stranger drove up to the barn and left a buggy drawn by two horses. The "short, heavy-set man" has not yet appeared, and the liveryman is at a loss to know what to do with the team. ABERDEEN---J. Roy Hubbart, who has been manager of the Sherman hotel here for the past two years, has purchased a half interest in the property. |
