Tips
When searching for a marriage in FreeBMD and the results produce more then one possible spouse, an additional search in the 1881 British Census might help identify the right spouse.
If the marriage existed in 1881, it may be possible to
find the right spouse, as well as, other family members by searching the 1881 British Census at the
FamilySearch (Census) site.
For example:
A FreeBMD marriage search for Emily Salter near the year 1876,
produced two possible spouses:
William Vizzard or Thomas Simpkins, both married Sept 1877.
A search of the 1881 British Census for William Vizzard and wife Emily found nothing.
However, an additional search for Thomas Simpkins found a family with wife Emily and two children at the Bremhill Census location. (Bremhill is also the location where Emily Salter attended the death of Elizabeth Hobbs Salter, Aug 1876 per death certificate of Elizabeth Salter). Even though the census record is not absolute proof, it provides a solid connection between Emily Salter and Thomas Simpkins.
Before ordering a marriage certificate try searching the census records first. The results may help you make a more informed choice for spouse
and may provide valuable information about other family members as well.

Hello Eve,
In researching my HAUNSS family line, I've noticed that numerous times,
the name is mis-spelled as HANKS, and I just wanted to make you aware of
this. It's because of their German accent and the particular dialect that
they speak, makes the name even harder to spell. The HAUNSS family is
from the Black Forest, Germany. They spoke/speak allemanisch German
dialect, which makes HAUNSS sound like HANKS to the English ear.
I wanted to let you know, just in case you ever get a HANKS researcher
who hits a brick wall and can't seem to tie into any Hanks line. You
might want to send them my way or let them know this. Just trying to
help all researchers out there.
Good luck and blessings in your searches,
John Maurath
