Hanlons in Griffith's Valuation

1850/1860's, Ireland

Carried out in the 1850/60's, Griffith's Valuation of Ireland is a very useful list of names and places but one should remember it is not a real census. It was, in fact, intended as a tax asessment. The valuation recorded the acreage and estimated value of the house and land of every householder and the name of their landlord. This means that a whole household was represented by only one name - the head of household - i.e. the vast majority of people are not listed in it. However, in places in Ireland like County Donegal where the earliest surviving censuses are those of 1901 and 1911, Griffiths is an invaluable census substitute.
