          It is estimated that the surname Pertzsch is borne today by fewer than 700 persons worldwide.  According to Walter Wenzel, who has published several books on the origins of German names, 'Pertzsch' comes from the Lusatia (Lausitz) region of Germany.  The earliest recorded use of this name occurred in the 1500's.

          Lusatia has long been home to the Sorbs (also known as the Wends), an ethnic minority whose language is closer to Czech and Polish than it is to German. The unusual spelling of 'Pertzsch' suggests that it was originally a Sorbian name.

          The highest concentration of Pertzsches in Germany today live within an area bounded on the north by Wittenberg, on the east by Lauchhammer, on the south by Leipzig and on the west by Bitterfeld.  Sorbs in this region assimilated early.  Except for place names such as Delitzsch and Pretzsch, few traces of Slavic heritage remain.

          The highest concentration of Pertzsches in the United States still live around Onalaska and La Crosse, Wisconsin, where their immigrant ancestor, Johann Christian Pertzsch, settled in 1863.
