Historical Encyclopedia of Wyoming, 1970. University of Wyoming Alumni Book, 1991. Pioneers of Crook County, Wyoming, 1876-1920, by Crook County Historical Society. John H. Harney was a gold miner in the Black Hills, then ran a livery stable in Whitewood, SD in the early 1890's. A descendant thought it was John Henry Harney who was called "Hank" Harney, and was the founder of the Homestake Gold Mine in South Dakota. This mine was still in production (2000). There is a conflicting claim by another family who believes "Hank" Harney was their relation and not this person at all. After looking into this very carefully, it appears Hank Harney was indeed another person, Henry Clay Harney (Chart: ILWLA.EAS).
John's son are John Jr.; Thomas; Hugh Martin; and Grover C. Harney. There were also four daughters, who died in a diptheria epidemic about 1891. John had sturdy covered wagons and oxen and hauled freight for the railroad and from the railhead to dispersion points. In 1900 he had the mail route from Spearfish, South Dakota to Alzada, Montana. He owned land in Nebraska where the State Capital Building now stands, and at Vale South Dakota. His sons homesteaded in northeast Wyoming seven miles south of Alzada, Montana along the Little Missouri River. Hugh was a cowboy and rancher near Alzada. He married Winnifred Evans, a school teacher whose family lived near Aladdin, Wyoming. She had taught in Nebraska and at the Raber School near Colony, Wyoming. Their son, Martin Harney, was a member of the Wyoming Stockgrowers Association. He served in the Army Air Corps in 1940 to 45. Grover's sons also served in the military. Howard with the U.S. Marine Corps 1934-38, and then the Army Air Corps after Pearl Harbor (saying he was "tired of a pack and a rifle); J.W. served in the Navy; and Stanley served two terms in Korea with the Marines.
