HARNEY, Daniel Joseph
Rifleman #21833, 1st Bn, 34d New Zeland Rifle Brigade. Daniel Joseph Harney who died
Friday, 5 Apr 1918, was the son of Mr. & Mrs. R. Harney, of Southbridge, Canterbury,
New Zealand. Daniel is buried at Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps, Somme, France,
III E.2. Colincamps and "Euston" were within the British lines before the
British offensive of July 1916, and the Cemetery was used as a front line burial ground
during and after the unsuccessful attack on Serre on the 1st July. After the German
retreat in March 1917 it was scarcely used, and towards the end of March 1918 it passed,
with Colincamps, into enemy hands; but that was the limit of the German advance. The
line was held, and pushed forward, by the New Zealand Division; and the Cemetery was used
again for burials in April and May 1918. - from WGC.

Private, #3712, 1st Bn Irish Guards. Denis Harney who died on Friday, 6th Nov 1914,
at age 25, was the son of Darby & Bridget Harney, of Creagh, Beaulnamulla, Athlone.
His name is at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belguim (ref.
panel 11). Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The
Memorial bears the names of men who were lost without trace during the defence of the

HARNEY, Dennis Joseph
Lance Corporal #6184, 2nd Regt, South African Infantry. Dennis, who died on
Wednesday, 30 Aug 1916, at age 28, was the son of Mr. M.J. and Mrs. F.J. Harney, of
Devonshire House, Port Alfred, Cape Province. Dennis is buried at Cabaret-Rouge
British Cemetery, Souchez, Pas de Calais, France. II.B.9. Souchez was captured by
the French on the 26th Sept 1915, and the area was taken over by British troops the
following March. The village was completely destroyed. The Cemetery was begun
by British troops in March 1916, and used until August 1917. It was greatly enlarged

Harney, of 47 Park St., East London, Cape Province. His name is at Ypres (Menin
Gate) Memorial, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belguim. Panel 15 - 16 and 16A. [Also see Denis

HARNEY, George
Private #12376, 8th Bn., Royal Welsh Fusilliers. George Harney, who died on Friday,
6th Aug 1915, at age 35, was the son of James and Adelaide Harney, of Manchester, and the
husband of Ellen Harney, of 13 Kelsall St., West Gorton, Manchester. George is
buried at the Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Turkey. IV.F.13. The valley obtained its
name from the heavy shelling by the Turks on the 26th April 1915. It was an essential road
from the beach upwards. Wells were sunk and water obtained from it in small
quantities; on the South side of its lower reaches were camps and depots; and gun
positions were made near the mouth. The cemetery was made mainly during the
occupation, but partly after the Armistice by the concentration of isolated graves in the

who died on Wednesday, 11th Apr 1917, at age 28, was the son of Michael and Bridget
Harney; and the husband of Mary Ann (nee Sheridan), of 15 Earle Place, Cardiff. Mary
Ann later married Mr. Dooley. James was born at Passage East, County Waterford,
Ireland. He is listed at the Tower Hill Memorial, London, U.K. The Tower Hill
Memorial commemorates men of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who have no known grave.
It stands on the south side of the garden of Trinity Square, London, close to The

on Sunday, 19th Nov 1916, is buried at the Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq. XXI.
L.25. The cemetery was begun in April 1917, and it continued in use until 1922.
It was enlarged after the Armistice by the concentration of graves moved from other
cemeteries at Baghdad and in Northern Iraq and from battlefields, and later, from the

the military record, he died on Friday, 9th Aug 1918, and is buried at the Heath Cemetery,
Harbonnieres, Somme, France. III.J. 15. Harbonnieres was captured by French troops
in the summer of 1916. It was taken by the Germans on the 27th April 1918, and regained by

British graves are those of soldiers from the United Kingdom, mainly of the 21st Division,
