Sad News

James Mitchell, Isaac Smith and Uriah Redin, who left this place in January last for California in company with Allen Driggs and Reuben Powell, also of this place, arrived home yesterday, bringing the melancholy tidings of the death of Messrs. Driggs and Powell.  This afflicting dispensation to the numerous relatives and friends of the deceased, occurred at the mines on the 2nd day of August last.  Our friends left for home on the 20th of August, but on account of a combination of adversities, they have been detained until the present.  We will give further particulars in our next issue.

Continued.

We last week promised our readers some further account the adventures of our returned Californians.  We had hoped to procure the services of Mr. Mitchell, to give us a lengthy communication, but we regret to say his health has been such, since his return, that it would be imprudent for him to undertake the task.  We know he would confer a great favor on our patrons by continuing his interesting narrative.  From what our friends have told us, we are satisfied that the road California is not the road to ease or wealth.

Prescott, Sylvester D. Prescott

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, January 9, 1950

Many of the citizens no doubt remember the person whose name heads this article. We first became acquainted with him in 1832, and during the two years following we worked together as apprentices in the same office. Some fifteen or sixteen years have now elapsed since we last saw him; but during all that time we have never ceased to remember him as associated with some of our most cherished reminiscences. But       HE IS NO MORE!

The following extract of a letter, from John C. Morrill, dated, Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 25, 1849, to his brother, Jacob T. Morrill, gives the melancholy particulars of his death:

“Alas! My dear brother, I have sad news to communicate. Death has been amongst us in its most heart-rending form. Our beloved cousin, SYLVESTER D. PRESCOTT, is no more! He was killed at New Orleans, on the 19th inst., by the explosion of the steamer LOUISIANA. The first estimation we had of his sad end, was the arrival of one of our New Orleans packets, with his mangled remains on board. I communicated the sad intelligence to his wife, Elizabeth. Oh, what a stroke!—Warren, Morrill and Josiah Prescott and myself had the leaden coffin opened yesterday, in order to be certain that it contained his remains. His face, (one side of it) together with his chin and part of his forehead looked quite natural. He was buried to-day (Sunday) followed by all our connexions, together with the large procession of “Odd Fellows,” of which order he was a member, and a very large concourse of citizens and strangers. Alas! What shadows we are, and what shadows we pursue!”

He was standing on the boiler-deck of the ill-fated steamer, (having taken passage on her for home,) when she exploded. His body sunk with the boat, and was recovered the next day and recognized by an acquaintance. He must have been killed instantly—for one side of his head was mashed, and a deep and dreadful wound in his left side told too plainly that his warning was as brief as the twinkling of an eye. Over two hundred persons were lost by this sad castrophe.

“Have the kindness to communicate to James R. Morris the death of our cousin—James R. will not forget, I know, though years have flown by, the kindness of Sylvester’s heart. Yes, the whole Morris family and his acquaintances at Woodsfield will sympathize with us in the loss of so noble, so generous a relative.”
