Atkinson, Amanda Jane Atkinson

Source: Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated August 27, 1862

     DIED – At Mackelburg, Washington County, on Friday, August 8th, 1862;

Miss AMANDA JANE ATKINSON, daughter of Isaac and Hannah Atkinson formerly of Monroe County.

     Some eight hours previous to her decease she was in the enjoyment of perfect health, all was gaiety and sunshine with her.  In her anxiety to do some work speedily, she unfortunately took up a can of Carbon Oil and was using it in kindling the fire.  By some means the oil in the can was ignited and a terrible explosion followed, completely enveloping her in a sheet of flame.

     The few hours that she was permitted to live, in the most terrible suffering, were spent by her in assuring her parents of the peace and joy that awaited her beyond the dark valley, and in exhorting her young friends to be prepared for a like hasty summons to the mansion of bliss.

“Thou art gone to the grave, but we will not deplore thee,

Though darkness and sorrow accompanies the tomb:

Thy Savior has passed through its portals before thee,

And the lamp of his love was thy guide through the gloom,

Thou art gone to the grave, but we no longer deplore thee,

Nor tread the rough path of the world by thy side;

But the wide arms of mercy are spread to enfold thee,

And this is our hope since our Savior has died.

Thou art gone to the grave, but we are wrong to deplore thee,

When Christ was thy ransom, thy guard … and guide;

He bought thee, He took thee and soon will restore thee

Where death has no power since the Savior has died

Davis, Robert Davis

Source: Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated December 24, 1862

     DIED – At his residence in Woodsfield, Dec 6, 1862, Mr. Robert Davis, in the 75th year of his age.

     The deceased has long been a Ruling Elder in the Presbyterian Church, and rarely is a man more generally or more justly confided in and loved.  Though of retiring disposition, his scrupulous integrity, his sound judgment and great love of peace, rendered him in an uncommon degree, a faithful counselor, a sympathizing friend ,the cheerful and consistent supporter of every good cause, and by a line of  uncommon devotion to all duties of religion, had adorned his profession, and impressed all with whom he had intercourse with a conviction that he was in daily communion with the Savior, and living for a better country,  His last illness afforded a beautiful illustration of the power of faith to triumph over bodily infirmity.  His resignation to the divine will was most complete.  He trusted himself to the hands of God with a confidence that never wavered, willing that he should dispose of him as he, in his wisdom and goodness saw fit; and the Savior in whom he had confided, he found able to comfort and sustain him while passing through the valley of the shadow of death.  And now that he has fallen asleep, though many dear friends mourn his removal and the withdrawal of an example so worthy of their imitation, they are comforted by the assurance which his long life of devotion to all the personal duties of religion and the interest of the church of Christ afford, that he has exchanged this scene of sorrow and weeping for one of glory and Immortality.  “How blest the righteous when he dies.”       T.A.G.

                   Lieut. JOHN W. HAMILTON

     DIED – At “Elm Cove”, O., July 8th 1862, “CLEMIE”, son of F.A. & C.

Lamping, aged 5 years.

.

      “I want to be an angel”

         Our darling “CLEMIE” said,

       He little thought, alas how soon,

         The angel land he’d tread.

.

       Another link is broken here

           Another pet lamb given,

       But one more link is added

           To the family chain in Heaven.

   .

       We miss him at our table,

           When we see his empty chair,

        And sigh, that little “CLEMIE”,

             Will never more be there.

.

       Our Father sadly misses him,

           His blue-eyed little one;

        Our mother thinks with sigh and tear

           Of the curly head that’s gone.

.

        We resign him to The Father,

            For one more gem in his crown,

         And now we can less sadly say,

            Thy will, not ours be done.

                             J. O. E.

Flowers, Susan Flowers nee Evans

Source:  Spirit of Democracy Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, January 8, 1862

      DIED – On the 7th alt, near Ozark, this county, Susan Flowers, wife of George Flowers, and daughter of John and Sarah Evans, aged 39 years, 7 months and 11 days.

      She emigrated (sic) to the State at an early age and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of twelve years, she ever after adorned her profession with Christian fortitude.  She bore her sickness which was protracted and severe, without murmuring, ever willing to sacrifice all earthly things to enjoy society of Him who is the fair among ten thousand and the altogether loveliest.

      The writer being present a few days previous to her departure had the pleasure of seeing her rejoice in prospects of a home beyond the grave, assuring her friends that they need not weep for those whose hope is in Jesus, but ever urging them to promise to meet her in that (.. ) time where the funeral dirges is no more sung, and the parting hand never given, and where sickness, sorrow, pales and death has no entrance, she leaves a husband and four small children, and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her loss: but our loss is her eternal gain; she gambols under the shady and ever green foliage of the tree of life ever and anon (sic) plucking from it the health inspiring life perpetual fruit, she eats and lives forever praises her blessed Savior who has washed her from all of felicity.  In her death, the family circles is now broken, and a gem removed that cannot be restored – as a wife she was amiable and affectionate – as a mother, kind and instructive – as a neighbor not excelled, and a Christian deeply devoted.  “Blessed is the dead that die in the Lord, from henceforth, yea, saith the Spirit, they rest from their labors and their works do follow them.”

.

   Weeping friends why mourn for me

       While on life’s tempestuous sea;

    In Heaven I live with Jesus dear,

        Where there is no farewell tear.

.

   To Heaven you must prepare to come,

       And make it your abiding home;

   For there is no place on earth so dear

       As this eternal and celestial sphere.

                                         By a Relative.

Foggin, Mazy Olevia Foggin

Source: Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated September 10,1862

     MAZY OLEVIA FOGGIN, daughter of Mrs. Rebecca J. Foggin, departed this life In Clarington, Monroe County, Ohio, August 22, 1862, aged 10 years, 9 months and 22 days.  It is but seldom that we meet with one more lovely, more promising and more patient in suffering than little Mazy.  She was so kind in her disposition that she was quite a favorite with every one, but the frost of disease has nipped the rose while in the bud, the stern winter of death has laid his icy hand upon the lifeless clay, and the dark grave hides it from view; but the spirit now swells that number that are ever singing hosannah (sic)  to God and the lamb forever.

Beyond the dark valley and shadow of death,

Beyond the faint pulse and the fast failing breath,

Beyond the cold wave where the earth tie is riven,

Is a bright sunny home, amid the highlands of heaven;

.

There the eyes grow not dim with the sorrowful tears,

The heart is not heavy with trouble and fears.

Cares are not known in that world so fair   -

When the day is done shall we meet her there!

Horton, George C Horton

Source:  Spirit of Democracy Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, January 8, 1862

      On our arrival in camp our joy was dampened by the news of the death of our fellow soldier, George C. Horton, of Summerfield, Noble County, Ohio.  We left him sick on our departure, but thought him not dangerous, and his death to us sudden and unexpected.  Young and full of ardor, he was among the first to respond to the call of his country; and during his short stay with us, we ever found him a noble friend, a true patriot, and a brave soldier.  Among the thousands in camp his death and silent departure were unnoticed; but what grief and sorrow it will cause around the home of his parents, where his vacant place was ever present, and prayers constantly ascended for his safety.

      He has been removed from among us by an unseen Hand, for an unseen purpose, and never again will we meet him as of old, in the tent and on the field; but we will remember him as a generous comrade and a faithful friend.  His father hastened to hear his son breathe his last words, but arrived only in time to see his face blanched in death; and sorrow stricken with grief, he returned home, to which he mournfully conveyed the mortal remains of Corporal George C. Horton, another victim sacrificed on the altar of liberty.

James, Hamilton B. James

Source: Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated October 1, 1862

     Died – On the 20th day of August, Lieut. HAMILTON B. JAMES, member of Capt. S. Hollister’s company.

     Early on the memorable 29th of August, Milroy’s brigade being in advance, was ordered forward to find the enemy.  Capt. Hollister having left some time before the command of Company E, devolved upon Lieut. James.  We advanced until we came near the enemy lines, when they opened a most terrible fire of grapes and shell on us from a mask battery in the woods.

     Lieut. James was struck by a shell, his left leg cut off and the other broken.  Myself and three others carried him from the field to the woods out of range of enemy guns.  His brother in law Wm. R. Morris came, and we tried to get a Surgeon to amputate the

limb, at length one was found, he told us to carry him farther to the rear and he would dress his wound.  We carried him some three or four hundred yards back of the wood, and had just laid him down, when a shell lit and burned within six feet of where we stood.  Again we gathered up determined if possible to save him from falling into the hands of the enemy.

     We carried him about a mile to a house, and part of the way under rain of rebel guns.  When we got him there he was nearly gone, we did all we could to revive him, but all was in vain, he died a martyr to his country.  We found it impossible to get his body away; the rebel sharp shooters were already nearly around the house, we mad our escape to our lines amidst a shower of bullets.

     He died like a hero; he (sic) fell greatly regretted by the whole company.  I Stood by him on the field when shells flew thick around, he was calm and composed, as though he had been walking the streets of his own native town, in danger I never knew him to show the least excitement, and he had the full confidence of his men.  And if this should meet the eye of his heart broken wife or friends, let me say to them, that every effort was made next day to recover his body and sand it home, but all in vain for the rebels held the field.

     Peace by to his ashes, he fell in defense of his county, and now sleeps on the bloody field of Bull’s Run.

To the cold and silent tomb.

.

          God will gather thee again,

In his garden will grow,

On the green and lovely plain,

Where the crystal waters flow.

The 77th Ohio

     This regiment, which was in the battle of Pittsburgh, lost in killed, wounded and missing, about two hundred and eighteen.  A large number of Monroe boys are members of this Regiment, and we give a full lost of killed and wounded from this County as we could obtain up to the time of going to press.  The fact that the gallant 77th lost 213 men is a sufficient answer to the lying newspaper correspondents who reported they run without firing a gun.

     “Killed – Lieut. Steenrod Co A and four privates, whose names we have not yet learned.
