Frum, Wayne Frum

Frum, Virginia Frum nee Dougherty

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, June 20, 1946

A Johnstown, Ohio, couple, formerly of Monroe County, parents of eight children, were instantly killed shortly before 7 a.m. last Thursday [June 13, 1946] where their westbound sedan was struck by a southbound doubleheader Pennsylvania freight train at the Morse Road grade crossing at Columbus.

Victims of the crash were: Wayne Frum, 52, a car loader at the Columbus Coated Fabrics Corp., and his wife, Mrs. Virginia Dougherty Frum, 46. They resided at Route 1, near Johnstown, where they moved to a farm home about six months ago from Columbus.

The train, on Big Four tracks with a Big Four pilot, apparently struck the rear end of the automobile. The wreckage was carried about 75 feet south of the crossing, then rolled down an embankment.

Both bodies were thrown from the car by the impact. Frum’s body was found near the wreckage and his wife’s about 30 feet down the tracks. One of her shoes was found near the wreckage, and the other 20 feet from her body.

The crossing has no watchman or flasher lights, but there is a clear view approaching from the east. The couple had driven across the Pennsylvania tracks, on the easterly side of the double grade crossing, and were struck as they started over the Big Four right-of-way.

Frum suffered a broken neck, fractured skull and internal injuries, and his wife a crushed skull, internal hemorrhages and multiple fractures.

       The automobile was demolished.

Sheriff’s deputies said the Pennsylvania freight was an “extra” on Big Four tracks because of a minor accident north of the crossing.

Mr. and Mrs. Frum are survived by eight children; a son, Donald F. Frum, of Jerusalem, and seven daughters; Mrs. Nan Kirkbride of Jerusalem, Mrs. Mary V. Beculhimer, of Pikesville, Ky., and Misses Stella, Dorothy, Martha, Charlotte and Carolyn Frum, of the home.

Mr. Frum is also survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frum of Morgantown, W. Va.; two sisters, Elizabeth of Columbus, and Mary of Morganstown, W. Va; and three brothers; William of Columbus, Herbert of Syracuse, N. Y., and George Frum, of Morganstown.

Double funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at one o’clock at the Jerusalem Church of Christ. Interment was in Jerusalem cemetery.

Mooney, Elizabeth Mooney nee Davenport

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, August 8, 1946

Nearly five years before the beginning of the Civil War, Elizabeth Davenport was born in Woodsfield near the site of the home where she died Friday morning [August 2, 1946] in her ninety-first year. Her birthday was May 10, 1856, as a daughter of George H. and Lauretta Davenport. She grew to womanhood in Woodsfield and on January 21, 1879, was united in marriage with William C. Mooney.

They reared a family of six children, all of whom survive except William C. Jr. who died on April 9, 1935. The husband and father passed away July 24, 1918, at the age of 63, well known as a financier, business executive, a member of Congress and public spirited citizen.

Surviving are George L. and Herbert R. Mooney, of Columbus; John D., of Cleveland; Mrs. H. S. Shaffer and Mrs. John Srodes of Woodsfield. There are ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

During her entire married life and the quarter of a century since the death of her husband, she and members of the family were and still are associated with public life in various capacities. She was always interested and sympathetic yet she confined her personal interest to making her home the sanctuary it was intended to be, not only for the family whom it sheltered but for relatives and scores of friends who enjoyed its hospitality through the years.

Whether renowned or humble, the friends and guests were received with the fine hospitality of a great mother and true friend and all received a cordial welcome.

With childhood memories of the Civil War and more mature recollections of the Spanish-American conflict, wars reality touched her through her sons as it did thousands of other mothers in World War I and her grandsons in World War II. For many years she held membership in the Legion Auxiliary Unit, this interest being intensified when her son Herbert was Department Commander of the American Legion. This membership and that in the Methodist Church, the latter covering a period of 76 years, constituted her organized contacts with society. But individual and personal ministrations were numerous, and varied, many being revealed to members of the family by those who paid their respects to her memory at the time of her death.

While not in rugged health for some time, her serious illness followed a stroke of paralysis suffered a few days before her death. For about a month she had been confined to her bed as a result of a fall in her room.

Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon in charge of her present and former pastors, Rev. W. M. Miller and Rev. Leroy C. Henne, who read favorite Scripture texts and hymns and spoke briefly of her personal interest in the welfare of her church, family and friends.

Interment was in the family plat in Oaklawn cemetery by the Galbraith funeral home.

Pall bearers were Billy and Harry Shaffer, John Mooney, Billy Bertram, John Edmonds and Otto Jeffers.

By floral tribute personal visits and Messages of friend—local and distant—sympathetic interest was expressed to the family.

After the death of her husband she came here to make her home with her daughter and here she has made many friends for to know her was to love her. Early in life she became a Christian and united with the Deer Creek Baptist Church. She has been a true follower of Jesus Christ and embodied his teachings in her daily life. After she came to this city to reside she moved her church membership to the First Baptist Church here where she attended church services as regularly as her health permitted.

Tuel, William Tuel

Coon Rapids Enterprise Friday, February 15, 1946

WM. TUEL VICTIM OF SUNDAY’S FIRE

BURNS RECEIVED IN FLAMES OF HOME PROVE FATAL

Funeral Services Held at Methodist Church Thursday

In a fire Sunday afternoon that destroyed the Ed Tuel home on the west edge of town and all its contents and fatally burned Ed’s father, William, the Coon Rapids community suffered its most severe fire loss in many months.

Mr. and Mrs. George Kern were driving past the Tuel home on highway 141 just west of the fairgrounds when they noted the side of the house on fire, stopped and alarmed the Tuel family, who were in the house.

In attempting to move a five gallon can of kerosene on the porch Ed Tuel upset it, adding fuel to the flame which spread to a quantity of fuel oil which quickly engulfed the small frame dwelling in flames.

The elder Tuel remembered some money in the house and tried to go in and get it but in the attempt was badly burned and although rushed to St. Anthony’s Hospital at Carroll at once died the next day from his injuries.

The Coon Rapids fire department responded to the alarm promptly but the house was a mass of flames when they arrived and the loss was complete including all the furniture and other personal effects of the Tuel family.

The firemen prevented the flames from spreading to other buildings just north of the dwelling.

Funeral services for William Tuel were held at the Methodist church Thursday afternoon with the pastor, the Rev. Eugene Alexander, in charge.

Miss Eleanor Rippey and Miss Patricia Williams sang "Ivory Palaces" and "Softly and Tenderly" with Miss Dorothy Alexander playing the accompaniment.

Casket bearers were Lox Conner, Pat Carroll, Wm. Hupp, Fred Kennedy, Henry Schultz, and Dick Sigler. Interment was in the Oak Hill cemetery.

The life sketch as read by the Rev. Alexander follows:

William Henry, youngest son of William Henry and Margaret Knight Tuel, was born in Carroll county, Iowa, March 14, 1876. Mr. Tuel was badly burned when his son Edward’s home was destroyed by fire Sunday, February 11, 1946. Though rushed immediately to St. Anthony’s Hospital at Carroll he passed away Monday afternoon at about 2:30. His age was 69 years, 10 months and 27 days.

Mr. Tuel followed the vocation of farming and except for seven years spent in Dallas county lived his entire life in Carroll county.

He was united in marriage to Bessie M. Blanchard at Coon Rapids in January 1896. She preceded him in death in 1906. To this union five children were born: Vernie of Glidden, Sylvia Young of Des Moines, Mrs. Clarence Hupp of Coon Rapids, Paul of Cambridge, Minn., and Edward E. of Coon Rapids. Besides these five children he is survived by ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers; Luther Tuel of Milford, Iowa, and Richard of Evansville, Minn. He leaves other relatives and many friends.
