ONE KILLED,
FOUR HURT IN
AUTO CRASH
Victim Thrown Under
Own Car, Skull Crushed
Both Autos Wrecked By
Impact--Injured Men Not Seriously Hurt
Furl Aaron Binegar, 21, of Pine Ridge, foreman at The Casto
Rubber Co., was fatally injured Thursday at 11:15 p.m. in an automobile
collision at Third and Scammel streets.
Four persons in the other car involved in the crash were injured.
It was Marietta's first traffic fatality of the year.
Police said they had a report that the crash occurred
during the few seconds that the light was changing, both drivers failing to
observe the caution flashes.
No arrest was made by police.
One car was being
driven, police said, by Richard Weber, 20, of 506 Front St. Riding with him were Paul Carlisle, 25, and
his brother, Charles Carlisle, 32, both of 727 Fifth St., and John Archer, 24,
of 422 Seventh St.
Weber and Archer were taken to their homes after receiving
medical attention at Memorial Hospital, but the Carlisle brothers were admitted
and were to undergo x-ray examinations Friday.
Hospital attendants reported none of the injured were serious, the
victims suffering only from cuts and bruises.
Police said Binegar was pronounced dead a few minutes after
his arrival at the hospital. Coroner
J.A. McCowan reported Binegar died from two fractures of the skull and internal
injuries.
The Weber auto turned over twice when it was struck by the
Binegar car, police reported, coming to rest on the sidewalk at Weber's
grocery. Binegar's auto was overturned
on the curb of the northeast corner, headed south, with the driver under the left
fender.
Police said their investigation showed Weber was driving 30
miles an hour east on Scammel St., when he entered the street
intersection. The Binegar car was
reported traveling north on Third St. The
intersection is protected by an automatic traffic signal light.
Binegar was driving a 1946 Chevrolet coach which he had
only recently purchased, but it had not been transferred to the new owner,
police said. Weber was driving a 1938
Chevrolet coach.
Watch Wrecked
Impact of the collison was so great, police reported, the
works in Binegar's watch were knocked from the case. The damaged watch and the top of a fountain pen were turned over
to the dead man's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Binegar, after they identified
them at police headquarters. Cash
amounting to $141.64 which Binegar had in his possession was turned over by
police to the coroner.
A partly filled bottle of whiskey, which police said was on
the rear seat of the Weber car, was locked up in the property drawer at
headquarters. Police said there was no
evidence that Richard Weber, driver of the car, had been drinking.
Police reported two relatives of Binegar were killed in an
automobile accident in 1918 on Route 26* when a car plunged over an embankment
after being sideswiped by another car and that another relative recently died
as the result of a fall from a building under construction at the rear of the
New System Bakery.
The body of Binegar was removed to Doudna & McClure's
funeral home pending funeral arrangements.
Born Dec. 6, 1925, he was a son of Clarence and Carrie
Herlan Binegar of Pine Ridge, Newport Twp.
He was employed for three years with the Casto Rubber Co. plant in this
city and was a foreman at the plant at the time of his death.
Survivors are his parents and brothers and sisters who are
Kenneth Binegar of Matamoras, Mrs. Delorace Thomas of Williamstown, Mrs.
Elwanda Congleton of Fifteen, Merle, Orville, Phyllis, Mona, Lyle and Patricia
Binegar, all of the family home. Conway
Binegar of Pleasant Ridge is the grandfather.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the
Newport Methodist Church. Interment
will be in Valley cemetery. The body
will be taken to the home of the parents Saturday afternoon.

If I should die and leave you here awhile.
Be not like others, sore undone, who keep
A long vigil by the silent dust and weep.

That which will comfort other souls than thine;
Complete these dear unfinished tasks of mine,
And I, perchance, may therein comfort you.
