Sad and sudden was the call,

                      Of one , so dearly loved by all;

A bitter grief, a shock severe,

To part with one we loved so dear.

  .

Not now, but in coming years,

It may be in the better land,

We’ll read the meaning of our tears,

                      And there sometime we’ll understand.

  .

God knows the way, he holds the key,

                      He guides us with unerring hand;

Sometime, with tearless eyes, we’ll see

Yes, there, up there, we’ll understand.

  .

“He has gone home to that land,

                      At the Father’s right hand,

Where the prepared mansions now stand.

May we all heed the call of his beckoning hand.”

                                                                 His Loved Ones

Although he was unable to be an active member of the Church during these past years, he remained a faithful Christian thru his personal devotions and the inspiration from the Bible and radio worship services. This past fall he wrote a request in a strong hand, influenced some by the German script. The request was for the sacrament of communion. After participation in Communion with his wife, he again received the strength of the love and communion with his Master Christ. May God bless all of those who remain faithful unto death.

Faber, Lilly Faber nee Eichhorn

Monroe County Republican, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, October 16, 1952

Lilly Eichhorn Faber, youngest child of a family of twelve was born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Eichhorn of Clarington, Ohio on April 9, 1881 and departed this life Aug. 21, 1952, age 71 years, 4 months and 12 days.

Mrs. Faber entered the Dixon Public Hospital on Tuesday, Aug. 12 and submitted to surgery the following day, from which she never regained consciousness. Every possible aid of modern medicine was administered to her, but the death angel claimed her life at 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 21.

She received an early education at her home school and as a young lady became a member of the Methodist Church in Clarington, Ohio. She came to Illinois and made a home for her brother, Fred Eichhorn, on the Shick farm near Sterling, Ill., prior to her marriage to Ezra Faber of La Moille, August 25, 1910. The wedding was an especially happy occasion because she chose for her wedding date the golden anniversary of her parents and they again repeated the marriage vows at their daughter’s wedding in a double ceremony in Clarington, Ohio.

They established their home at the Faber farm, La Moille Township, and affiliated themselves with the Perkins Grove Church; later the family moved their church letter to Van Orin United Brethern Church where Mrs. Faber has been a faithful member for the past thirty years.

To this union three sons were born, Henry of East Grove Township; Emerson of Bloomington, Ill., and Elmer who died at the age of seventeen years.

When her children were small, Mrs. Faber’s health failed, repeated surgery was her lot and in recent years complications developed. She also had the misfortune of fracturing her hip twice. The second fracture made it necessary for her to walk with the aid of crutches.

Throughout these years of trials and afflictions she lived a most beautiful, consecrated, Christian life always cheerful, patient, and kind, with a smile for everyone.

The Fabers retired and moved to their present home in Van Orin, in December 1948. Here they celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary, August 27, 1950 and all who attended will recall her joy and the happiness of this occasion. In late June, she made a trip with her family to Kansas and on August 3, while attending morning worship service with relatives in Wellston, Michigan, the illness began which culminated in her death.

Surviving are her husband; brothers, Fred and Adolph of Iowa; and George of Ohio; five grandchildren: Norman, Ralph, Shirley, Jerry Lee and Joyce Kay Faber; besides many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the United Brethern in Christ Church in Van Orin with the Rev. Albert Middlebrook officiating.

Interment was in Greenfield Cemetery at La Moille, Ill.

Relatives from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Faber, Bloomington, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Eichhorn and son James of Shellrock, Iowa; Mr. Fred Eichhorn, Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mrs. Georgina Poorman of Waterloo, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Eichhorn and granddaughter of Aloman, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Eichhorn and daughter of Oswego, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Faber, Mr. and Mrs. Mays, Mrs. Parkhurst of Greenfield, Iowa.

Other friends were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Toole and his mother, Miss Ruth Toole of Kentucky, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Toole of Tennessee and Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Engel of Sandwich, Illinois.

HOLD  RITES  FOR  THREE  SHOCK  VICTIMS

Friends Keep Wife of One Victim from Going To Scene of Tragedy

A gloom of sadness came over the community of Chatham, late Thursday afternoon, when it became known that three local men, all employees of the Dymo Oil company, had been electrocuted during rigging operations at the rear of the Long General store.

Killed instantly when 7200 volts of electricity passed through them were Robert Lloyd Hall, 29; Emmett Cecil Sivard, 32, and Wayne Kirkbride, 54.

The three had gone to pull pipe from an abandoned oil well when a guy wire from a 30-foot metal pole used in the operations touched a high tension wire almost directly over the well.

Stanley Long and son, Fred, were in the barn not more than 50 feet from the well, using an electric sander when the lights became dim and they heard snapping of electricity.  Going outside they saw Hall lying on the ground near the well and immediately sensed the tragedy.

They ran to the store a few feet away and called the Lodi fire department.  In the meantime Long and a customer, Charles Jenkins, returned to the scene and found Kirkbride and Sivard "frozen" to the guy wires.  At the same time George Kreiger, superintendent of the oil company, arrived on the scene to see how his workers were getting along.  He joined Long and Jenkins in using hoes and rakes to free the two men.

DR. VICTOR  Kolb of Litchfield  was on his way home from Lodi Community hospital and had slowed down to allow the fire department to pull into the Long place when he was hailed.  Efforts to revive the men were futile.  None of them was badly burned, and it is believed death was instantaneous.

The wife of one of the men happened to be walking in front of the Long store a few moments after the tragedy occurred.  A friend quickly took her in tow to keep her from visiting the death scene.

Called to the place were Sheriff Charles W. Williams, Deputy Steve Helli, Coroner Andrew Karson and the state highway patrol.

MR. HALL, a former resident of Lodi, had made his home in Chatham the past year.  A veteran of World War II, he had served in both the European and Asiatic Theater of operations.

Rev. Louis Turner officiated at rites at the Parker funeral home Monday afternoon with burial in Woodlawn cemetery, Lodi.

His survivors include a wife, Phyllis; two sons, Daniel Lee, five years and Lawrence, two years; a daughter, Lois Sue four years; father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. William Hall of Chatham; seven brothers and seven sisters, Mrs. Earl Meek of Chippewa Lake, Mrs. Kenneth Warner, Mrs. Robert Ruff, Harold and William Jr. of Lodi, Wanda, Evelyn, Barbara, Ica, Donald, Walter, Norman and Gary of the parental home, and Cpl. Ralph with the U.S. Army in Missouri, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Hall of Medina, Rt. 5, and Mrs. Ica Myers of Mansfield.

SERVICES  FOR Mr. Sivard, a member of the Chatham V.F.W. post, were held Sunday afternoon at the Parker funeral home in charge of Rev. Alonzo Todd of Brownhelm.  Burial was in the Chatham cemetery.

He leaves a wife, Ruth; two daughters, Kathleen Lynn, two years, and Elizabeth Sue, five years, a son, George, 10 years; father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. David Sivard of Rinard Mills, O.; three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Snider of Chatham, Mrs. Hazel Patton of Graysville and Mrs. Mary Cline of Rinard Mills, and three brothers, Howard of Lodi and Glenn and Harry of Rinard Mills.

Rev. Mr. Todd will also officiate at services for Mr. Kirkbride.  The rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Elliott funeral home and burial will be in the Chatham cemetery.

He leaves a wife, Marie; three daughters, Mrs. Eva Martin of Marietta, Mrs. Vera Dennis of Medina and Mrs. Elva Ramsier of Chatham; a son, Merle of Litchfield; eight grandchildren and two brothers and four sisters.

Article published by the Monroe County Historical Society in 1984 Louis E. Matz
In seeking a lawyer the would-be client invariably desires to place his business with an attorney who knows the law, is well versed in decisions and can manange a case in all its details to the very best advantage. Among the several attorneys of this class in Woodsfield will be found mr. L.E. Matz, than who there is no more prompt, careful and painstaking attorney in the county. All business entrusted to him is attended to in an entirely satisfactory manner. Like many other good men, Mr. Matz came from the farm and the teacher's desk.
Born on his father's farm near Lewisville, Ohio, February 14th, 1866. Thus located his early educational advantages were limited to the common country schools; but his ambition to secure an education caused him to so improve his opportunities that at an early age he was prepared to teach. In this profession he had little or no trouble in securing some of the best schools in the vicinity of his home. By labor on the farm and in the school room he managed to procure funds for a better education. A few years after entering the teaching profession, he took up the study of law, to which he devoted as much time as he could spare from his other work. To complete his common education he took a college course at Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio, after which he came to Woodsfield in January 1892, and served as assistant probate law at this place. Shortly after opening an office at this place he formed a partnership with C.S. Buchanan, which continued for about two years. In July, 1895, he formed a partnership with Hon. James Watson; but as this partnership no longer exists, he is doing business for himself, and will take charge of cases in adjoining counties as well as at home. Mr. Matz speaks German as well as English, and for this reason alone his services are preferred in consultation and actual practice by many of our older German citizens.
Office: In lower front room of Driggs House on Main Street.

Residence: A fine new structure in the northern part of town in Woodsfield.
L.E. Matz, died Sunday afternoon, August 17, 1952, age 86, in Bellaire Hospital.  Bauer and Turner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  Masonic services were held on Tuesday evening at 7:30 at Lewis's home on Maple Avenue.  Services were held in the home Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 with additional services at two o'clock at St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church.  Rev. H.J. Kopke was the officiate and the Interment was in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Three sons were born to Lewis and Anna Egger Matz; Capel, Edmund and Wallace.

Matz died shortly after 1:00 o'clock at the Bellaire City Hospital where he had been a patient for a few days for observation and treatment.  While he had been in more or less retirement for several months, the "drive'' that characterized  his long and useful life kept him active for a man of more than four-score years.

State police at Moundsville reported the Meyers child, whose parents live in Euclid, O., was riding in a car with his father, when it apparently went out of control, climbed a bank and turned over.

The father broken up over the boy's death was not able to give details of the accident to investigating troopers.  State police were not available for details as they could not be reached by radio from either Moundsville or Co. 'A' headquarters at Shinnston, presumably being out of their cars.

The area in which the accident occurred is well known for its number of summer camps.

The father and son were brought to the Reynolds Memorial hospital in another car.  Hospital attaches said the child was dead on arrival.

Justice Chester A. Burks was called in on the case by State police as acting coroner.  The justice rendered a verdict of accidental death.

The body was removed to the Lutes funeral home, Second street, Moundsville.

Submitter's Note:  I have four different clippings from various papers about the death of Ernest.  I do not know which of the four this was a part of, or if it was in a separate issue.

In loving memory of our dear son, Pfc. Ernest Lester Miller, who died in Japan, February 18, 1952.

This month comes with sad regret,

It brings the day we shall never forget.

No verse can say, no flowers repay,

How much we lost on that sad day.

God knew that he was suffering,

That the hills were hard to climb,

So he close his weary eyelids,

              And whispered, "Peace, be thine."

Away in the beautiful hills of god,

By the Valley of rest, so fair,

Sometime, someday, we know not when,

We will meet our Ernie there.

Sadly missed by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Leva Miller.

And left us dreaming how very fair

It needs must be since she lingers there.

  .

And you, oh, you who the wildest yearn,

For the old time step and the glad return,

Think of her faring on as dear,

In the love of there as the love of here.

Think of her still as the same, I say,

She is not dead, she is just away.

Voland, Melvin Thomas Voland

Jonesboro     Man     Is     Killed     In     Collision

Three   Marion   Men   Injured   in   Auto-Truck   Wreck   Saturday

ALEXANDRIA -- Melvin Thomas Voland, 23, West Sixth Street, Jonesboro, was killed instantly and three others, all of Marion, were injured, one seriously, in an automobile-truck collision at 3:30 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Ind. 28 and 9, one mile north of here.  Poor visibility, drizzling rain and slippery pavement were blamed for the collision of the two vehicles.

State and Alexandria  police said the others injured were as follows:

Donald Medlin, 2212 S. Adams St., who suffered a shoulder injury, was taken to St. John's Hospital in Anderson and released; Claude Stevens, 3202 S. Landis St., head, chest and leg injuries, taken to St. John’s Hospital, condition serious.

James Mark, Jr., 25, of 924 S. McClure St., fractured ribs and shock, taken to Marion General Hospital.

An investigation by authorities revealed the convertible in which Voland and the Marion men were riding was headed east on Ind. 28, and it was involved in a collision with a truck, owned by the Commercial Motor Freight Service of Indianapolis and operated by Fred D. Smith, South Bend, who was en route north on Ind. 9.  He was uninjured.

According to the reports, the driver of the convertible which was owned by Voland but was not being operated by him at the time of the accident, apparently stopped and then drove on, directly into the path of the large truck, loaded with generators.  All occupants of the convertible were thrown out of the car through the canvas top.

In an effort to avoid the crash, Smith turned his truck sharply, causing it to jacknife [sic] and overturn after the crash.

Stevens was pinned under the truck and was there for some time before he could be extricated.  Others in the convertible landed on the pavement, authorities said.  Voland was riding on the right side of the car, where force of the impact was centered.

Madison County coroner officials said Voland suffered a crushed skull, chest, pelvis and shoulders, and his legs and arms were broken.

Voland formerly served in the U.S. Marine Corps and had been employed at the Anaconda Wire and Cable Corp.

A native of Grant County, Voland was a graduate of Van Buren High School and attended Freemont Grade School.  Shortly after graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served a year in China and a year in Korea as a corporal with a medical unit.  He was discharged in October,1951, and since that time was employed in the braiding department at the Anaconda Wire and Cable Co.

Survivors include the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Voland, Jonesboro: three sisters, Mrs. Veldah Trosper, Hartford City, Mrs. Joyce Turner, Gas City, and Nancy Louise at home; one brother Walter W. Voland, now with the Air Force in Cheyenne, Wyo.; and the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Yuba Johns, Jonesboro.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Apostolic Friends Church, south of Jonesboro, with the Rev. Jessie Craig, pastor, officiating. Rev. Craig will be assisted by the Rev. Darrell Taggart of Churubusco.  Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery.
