Monroe
Co. Car Crash Kills Three In Family
Driver, 40, and Baby Also Hurt
Woodsfield---
A twelve-year-old Monroe county girl, her mother and her grandmother were
fatally injured Sunday morning seven miles east of here on Ohio 78 when the
church-bound family's auto slammed into a rock at the bottom of a hill on a
sharp curve, Sheriff Homer Antill said.
The victims, the county's first traffic fatalities this year, were Joy Ellen
Mellott, her mother, Freda, 36, and Mrs. Mellott's mother, Mrs. Laura Howell,
69, all of Woodsfield Rt, 4.
The girl and her grandmother died at the scene, and Mrs. Mellott was pronounced
dead on arrival at Barnesville general hospital.
Mrs. Mellott's husband, Ray, 40, driver of the death car, and their
17-month-old daughter, Bonnie, were also seriously hurt. Their condition was
listed as "fair" at the Barnesville hospital.
The crash occurred at 9:45 a.m. DST, Antill said.
According to Antill, Mr. Mellott's brakes failed on the Hurd's Run hill. He was
unable to shift the auto into a lower gear, the sheriff said. The machine left
the highway at the bottom of the hill, struck the rock on the right, and
flipped over before wedging in a steep ravine 50 feet away.
Antill said a woman was killed on the same curve about seven years ago.
Mellott and his family were en route to church at Cameron when the wreck
occurred.
Ray Mellott suffered chest injuries and possible head injuries in the wreck.
Bonnie Mellott received a broken collarbone and scratches and bruises.
The Mellott car was totally demolished, the front end being pushed back into
the front seat and the top being crushed down about 18 inches.
A passing motorist saw the car in the ravine and drove to the nearest phone to
call authorities.
The bodies of Mrs. Mellott, her daughter, and Mrs. Mellot's mother, Mrs.
Howell, were taken to the Turner and Bauer funeral home in Woodsfield where
arrangements are incomplete.

Coroner Returns
Verdict
In Fatal Shooting Here
A verdict that Donnie Ray Myers, 14 years old, of Linton,
was killed accidentally Thursday afternoon by a blast from a shotgun in the
hands of his brother, Larry Dean, 12, was returned today by Delmar Hasler,
Greene county coroner.
The shooting occurred about 1:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon
in a small shed that is located on property owned by Elvis Walker, between
Fifth street northwest and the Milwaukee railroad tracks, about two blocks
north of state road 54.
Investigators included Linton police, State Police
Detective Sgt. Joe Feeney and Greene County Sheriff Jack Blakely.
The officers reported that the younger Myers boy first told
them that he and his brother had purchased the shotgun that did the final
shooting from "an old man in West Linton for $5."
Changes His
Story
Later, however, he changed his story and told the officers
that he and his brother had gone to the home of Bill Beatty, who lives alone in
a small house a few hundred yards away.
He said that he waited outside while his brother entered the Beatty
residence and took the shotgun.
He said that he and his brother played with the shotgun and
then took it to the shed, which is used as a "play-house" by children
of the neighborhood.
Larry Dean said that Donnie Ray laid down on an old wicker
settee in the shed and that he was playing with the gun when his "finger
slipped on the trigger" and it discharged. The charge from the gun struck the older boy on the left side of
the head, killing him instantly.
The officers said that the old single-shot 12 gauge shotgun
probably had not been fired for several years.
The police said that they had no doubts that Larry Dean was
telling the truth, since the position of the boy's body bore out his story.
Donnie Ray was born at Linton on July 18, 1943, the son of
Norval and Alma Mae Miller Myers. He attended
the Linton-Stockton Elementary school and had been promoted into the Sixth
grade at the conclusion of the last term.
He attended the Olive Branch Baptist church.
He is survived by the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Norval Myers;
seven brothers, Orval G. Myers of Linton rural route, Eugene Myers of
Pendleton, and Earl R., Kenneth L, Donnie* [sic] Ray (a twin to the
deceased), Larry D. and Dannie E. Myers, all at home; three* step-brothers, Roy
Dyer of Indianapolis, and Bobby L. Miller of Vandalia, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs.
Shirley A. Glascloe [sic--Glascoe] of Dayton, Ohio and Mrs. Mary E.
Killian of Vandalia, Ohio, and two grandmothers, Mrs. Cora A. Myers and Mrs.
Ada B. Miller, both of Linton route three.
Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
The boy's body was taken to the Welch and Cornett Funeral
home, and was later removed to the home of the brother, Orval Myers, in West
Linton, where, it was announced, friends may call.
Funeral services will be held at the Orval Myers residence
at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon, with Rev. Donald McClintock officiating,
and burial will be made in the Old Linton cemetery.
Submitter's Notes:
* This should be Ronnie Ray. Donnie Ray is the deceased.
** Although the article says "three
step-brothers" only two were listed here.
