Allen, Mary Pearl Allen nee Mobberly

Allen, Mrs. Mary Pearl, 73, of St. Mary's ,W.Va. formerly of Woodsfield, died Thursday morning, February 18, 1960, at 12:15 o'clock, following an illness of pneumonia. She had been an invalid for the past twenty years.  A daughter of Milton and Julia Mann Mobberly, she was born August 20,1886, near Graysville. On July 30, 1904, she was married to John W. Allen, who survives.  Mrs. Allen was a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ.

Surviving besides her husband, are one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Ruby Gertrude) Petty, of St. Mary's, W.Va with whom Mr. and Mrs. Allen had resided since August 1956; three grandchildren, Paul Zerger, Jack Petty and Donna Lou Post; six great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ray Coss, of Graysville, and two brothers, J. Foster Mobberly, of Woodsfield and Errett
Mobberly, of New Matamoras.

One daughter, Wadna Gladys Zerger, died April 28, 1943. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock in the Gardner Funeral Home at Woodsfield.  Jesse Clayton, of St. Mary's, officiated, being assisted by Thos. A. Christy, of Woodsfield. Interment was in Oaklawn Cemetery.

 

Armbruster, Paul F. Armbruster

ARMBRUSTER, Paul F., 55, a resident of Temperanceville, near Barnesville, was found dead Wednesday morning. He was born at Temperanceville on September 3, 1905, a son of George and Alice Armbruster. A veteran of World War II, he had been employed at Mansfield, Ohio, for several years.

Surviving are one brother, George, Akron, and two sisters, Mrs. Norbert Flutterer and Mrs. Vinton J. Gehradt, both of Columbus. The body has been removed to the Campbell Funeral Home, Barnesville. Funeral services will not be held, but interment will be in Beaver Cemetery, near Calais.

 

Baker, Etta Baker

BAKER, Mrs. Etta, 92, of Lewisville, O., died Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. David Ludwig, of Donora, Pa. She was a member of the Evangelical and Reformed Church, and he Rebecca Lodge.

Her husband preceded her in death. Surviving are nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the Gardner Funeral Home, Woodsfield after noon tomorrow. Services at the funeral home,
Saturday, 1:30 p.m., Rev. Donald Zundel officiating. Interment will be in the friendship Cemetery, Lewisville.

Grandview     Cemetry [sic]     Founder     Dies     at     84

        Joseph Porter Birkhimer, 84, founder of Grandview Cemetery, died Sunday at 4:35 a.m. at his home at 743 E. 6th St.  He had been ill three years following a cerebral hemorrhage.

        Born in Pleasants County, W. Va., March 15, 1876, he was a son of John M. and Ruhame Myers Birkhimer.

        He lived in Salem 60 years, coming from East Liverpool, where he started cemetery work in Riverview Cemetery in 1894.  He organized Grandview Cemetery in 1901 and retired Dec. 1, 1949.

        He was a member of the First Christian Church; the Ohio Cemetery Association, the Mahoning Valley Cemetery Association and was affiliated with the Moose and Elks Lodges and the Transylvania Society.  He was a fisherman and big game hunter in his younger days.

        He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Pratt Birkhimer; a son, Vernon J. Birkhimer of Richmond, Va.; two granddaughters, Mrs. Nora Fays [sic?] Goodall and Mrs. Betty Jo Risby, and a grandson, Nelson K. Birkhimer, all of Richmond; and a brother. O. Floyd Birkhimer of Salem.

        Service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Arbaugh-Pearce Funeral Home, with Rev. Harold Deitch officiating.

        Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.

        Friends may call at the funeral home this evening.

Birkhimer, Joseph P. Birkhimer

        Joseph P. Birkhimer, 84, father of Vernon J. Birkhimer, director of the Richmond bureau of city cemeteries died Sunday at his residence, in Salem, Ohio.  Also surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary P. Birkhimer; a brother, Floyd Birkhimer of Salem; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

        A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Salem, with burial in Grandview Cemetery there of which he was superintendent.

 

Bolt, Freda Weir Bolt nee Kahrig

       Freda was born August 6, 1892, the youngest child of Ludwig and Catherine Gertler Kahrig.

       She was bapt. Sept. 4, 1892.

       1st. married Joseph Weir and 2nd. married a Bolt. 

       Died Dec. 25, 1960 in Guthrie, Okla. Of chronic lymphatic leukemia.

 

Boston, Elizabeth Boston

Boston, Mrs. Elizabeth A., 97, a life resident of Hannibal, O., passed away suddenly Sunday night at 11:30 at the Pittsburgh residence of her son, Ira D. Boston. Widow of the late Israel D. Boston, she was an active member of the Hannibal Methodist Church. Surviving, beside her son, are two daughters: Mrs. Dio (Pearl) McGinnis, Leon, Iowa: Mrs. Inez Norton of Hyannisport, Mass.; and four grandchildren, among whom is Mrs. Roy A. Byers of Warren, O., who had made her home with her grandmother for many years: and ten great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Daisy Baker, preceded her in death in 1952. Friends will be received at the Rush Funeral Home in Sardis. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

 

Bowles, Homer D. Bowles

Dies   At   Age   67

        Funeral services for Homer D. Bowles, 67, mayor of Quaker City, were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Eberle Funeral Home at Quaker City.  Rev. George Vorhies, Methodist Church minister, officiated at the services and burial was made in Friends Cemetery.

        Mayor Bowles died shortly after midnight Sunday of a heart attack.  Death was unexpected although it was known he had a heart condition.  He had attended church that morning, acting as an usher, and had seemed in his usual health.

        Mr. Bowles came to Quaker City several years ago from Glen Falls, N. Y., following retirement, and he had taken an active interest and participation in community affairs here.  He became mayor last February, filling a vacancy caused by the resignation of the elected mayor.  Before being named mayor, Mr. Bowles served as a member of council.

        Last week he was elected Worthy Master of Quaker City Lodge No 500 F. & A. M.  He was a member of the official board of the Quaker City Methodist Church and an active church worker.  As mayor, he devoted much time to matters which he considered in the best interests of the village.

        During World War I, Mr. Bowles served with the 83rd Division overseas.  He was born at Morristown July 22, 1893, a son of Charles and Frances Bell Bowles.  The family resided for a number of years in Quaker City, where the deceased attended school and graduated in 1912.

        Surviving are his widow, Mary; two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Hayes and Mrs. Hazel Smith, both of Quaker City.

 

Bramhall, Emma P. Bramhall, nee Kinkade

        Funeral services for Mrs. A. T. Bramhall, 76, were held in the chapel of Palmer Funeral home.  Dr. Bradley Allison officiated.  Interment was in Lebanon cemetery.  Pallbearers were Bob Hilton, Orval Smart, Arvel Hough, Claude and Clarence Burns and Ernest Brown.

        Mrs. Bramhall was formerly Miss Emma Kinkade and was a daughter of Joseph and Mary Kinkade.  She was born in Adrain [sic--Adrian], Bates County on 2 Nov 1883.  The family moved to Lebanon 47 years ago and the remainder of her life was spent here.  She was married to A. T. Bramhall of Grovespring in her youth and her early married life was spent in the Grovespring area.

        She was mother of six children, two of whom, a daughter, Mrs. Manola Hough and a son, Lloyd Bramhall, preceded her in death.

        She is survived by her husband, of the home; a son, Leroy Bramhall, of KC; three daughters, Mrs. Roberta Blair of Charlotte NC; Mrs. Hazel Wright of Lebanon; and Mrs. Elizabeth Walstrom of Fresno CA.  Eight grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

        Mrs. Bramhall was a member of the First Baptist Church and was active in its organization.  She was a lovely Christian, devoted to her home and family.

        RITTMAN -- Mrs. Mary Bruny, 62, of 27 Sheldon Ave., Rittman, died Tuesday morning at University Hospital in Columbus following a long illness.

        She was born in Saint Marys, W.Va., and lived most of her life time in Rittman.  She was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Rittman and the Order of the Eastern Star.

        Mrs. Bruny is survived by her husband, Clarence; a daughter, Mrs. Ruth MacRae of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, John Scharer of Los Angeles; six sisters, Mrs. Freda Steiner of Rittman, Mrs. Ida Sutton of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Wilma O'Donald of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Edna Nelson of Akron, Mrs. Lucy Kling of Akron, and Rose Scharer of Akron; and two grandchildren.

        Services will be at 2 p.m. DST Friday at the Gillman-Haines Funeral Home in Rittman.

        Burial will be in Rittman Cemetery, with the Rev. F. D. Donaldson officiating.

        Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

 

Bruny, Priscilla Bruny, nee Bauman

        RITTMAN -- Mrs. Priscilla Bruny, 90, of 77 N. Fourth St., Rittman, died Friday evening at Apple Creek State Hospital.

        She was a native of Sardis Ohio, and lived near Woodsfield until 1919, when she came to Rittman.  Her husband, James A. Bruny, died in 1946.  She was a member of the First Brethren Church of Rittman.

        Surviving are a son, Clarence of Rittman; three daughters; Katherine of Akron, Esther of Rittman, and Mrs. Eunice Grant of Oak Park, Ill.; a brother, David Bauman of  Rittman; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

        Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Gillman-Haines Funeral Home in Rittman.  Burial will be in Rittman Cemetery.

        The Rev. Louis Bauman will officiate.  Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

        General Marion Burch, a retired coal miner, died at 10:05 o'clock Wednesday night of last week at the home of a brother, Francis Burch, of Bloomfield.  He was 75 years old, and had been in failing health for several years.

        Mr. Burch was born at Solsberry on June 17, 1885, and was the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Burch.  He had spent the greater part of his life in the Linton community.

        He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Lucas Burch, to whom he was married on Dec. 17, 1904; three daughters, Mrs. Flora Madson, of Merritt Island, Fla., and Mrs. Della Dunn and Mrs. Helen Walker, of Linton; five sons, Paul Burch, of Phoenix, Ariz.; Harvey Burch, of Houston; Cletus Burch, of Maywood, Ill., and Herbert Burch, of Linton; two brothers, Francis Burch of Bloomfield, and Augdon Burch, of Ellettsville; one sister, Mrs. Cleo Grammer, of Solsberry; 18 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.  One son and one daughter preceded him in death.

        Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton.  The Rev. F. L. Decker and Rev. Henry Skinner were the officiating ministers, and burial was made in Fairview Cemetery.

Calvert, Mildred M. Calvert, nee McElhaney

Native     Of      Ada     Was     Ill     For     Six     Months

        ADA -- Mrs. Mildred M. Calvert, 52, of 414 N. Gilbert St., Ada, died at 8 a.m. Wednesday in Lima Memorial Hospital after an illness of six months.

        Born  Feb. 10, 1908, in Ada, she was the daughter of Robert and Daisy (Kincaid)* McElhaney.  On April 8, 1951, she was married to Reed Calvert who survives.

        Also surviving are her mother at Ada, and a step-daughter, Janet, at home.

        Mrs. Calvert was a member of the Ada Church of Christ.

        Services are at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the church.  The Rev. Robert Mattern will officiate with burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Preston Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Thursday.

LEWIS  P.  CHRISTMAN, 91,  DIES  WEDNESDAY  AT  HOME  OF  SON

       Lewis P. Christman, 91, died Wednesday morning, February 3, at 6 o'clock, at the home of his son, Roy Christman, in Woodsfield, after an extended illness.

        Born near Lewisville, January 23, 1869, he had resided for the last several years with a sister, Mrs. Anna Weber, of Lewisville,  His wife, Ida Paulus Christman, preceded him in death in 1944.

        He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Freda Hamilton, Short Creek, W. Va.; five sons, Dr. Nova Christman, Roy Christman, Walter Christman, and Clayton Christman, all of Woodsfield, and John Christman, of Akron.  Also surviving are five sisters and one brother, Louisa Christman, Tillie Christman, Mrs. Anna Weber, and Mrs. Lewis Heft, all of Lewisville, and Mrs. Mary Ackerman of Woodsfield; and George H. Christman of Woodsfield, and 18 grandchildren.

        Friends are being received at the Bauer and Turner funeral home, Woodsfield, where services will be held Friday at 2 p.m.  Burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery.

 

Claybaugh, Joseph Clifford Claybaugh

J.   Claybaugh   Dies;   Stricken   Downtown

        Stricken by a heart attack while on a downtown shopping trip with his wife, Joseph Clifford Claybaugh, 49, of 500 E. Virginia Ave., died a 11:30 a.m. Saturday in a physician's office.

        Mr. Claybaugh complained of illness when his wife returned to the car and she suggested that they drive to the office of their family doctor.  Admitted immediately by a receptionist to an inner consultation room, Mr. Claybaugh was dead before the doctor could step into the room.  Coroner Horace Payton is making an investigation.

        Mr. Claybaugh was born at Toulon June 9, 1910, a son of Claude and Mary Westerfield Claybaugh.  He married Margaret Day at Wyoming April 17, 1937.  He had lived in Peoria 25 years and at the Virginia Ave. address for eight years.  He had been employed by the Peoria Board of Education as a painter for 15 years, last working Friday.  He was a member of the Building and Construction Union, Local 157, St. Bernard's Catholic Church, and the Men's Club of the parish.  He served with the U.S. Navy in World War II.

        Surviving are his wife; his parents of Toulon; one son, Frederick Joseph Claybaugh of Peoria; four sisters, Miss Eleanor Claybaugh and Miss Margaret Claybaugh, both of Toulon, Mrs. Richard Carroll of Wyoming and Sister Marie Kevin, OP, of Chicago, and two brothers, Robert Claybaugh of Toulon and Edgar Claybaugh of Los Angeles, Calif.  One brother, Paul Claybaugh, died in infancy.

        Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Wilton Mortuary, 2101 N.  Knoxville Ave., and at 10 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church. Msgr. J. B. Reidy will officiate.  Burial will be in St. Dominic's Cemetery at Wyoming.

        Friends may call at the mortuary from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday.  The rosary will be recited there at 8 p.m.

 

Denney, Nick Denney

        DENNEY -- Nick Denney, age 72, of Oskaloosa, route 1, formerly of near Delta, died at 5:50 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Mahaska hospital.  Mr. Denney, a retired farmer, was born March 8, 1887 at Toulon, Ill. the son of Michael and Amelia Kinkade Denney.

        Surviving are:  his wife, Mrs. Elsie Johnson Denney of Oskaloosa; one son, Don Denney of Oskaloosa and one brother, Tom Denney of Oskaloosa.

        Services will be at the Garland chapel Monday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m. with burial at Forest cemetery.  Rev. Max Johnson of the Assembly of God will officiate.

 

Diehl, Herbert H. Diehl

        DIEHL, Herbert H., resident of 80 Kenney St., died at 12:40 a.m. Wednesday in Wheeling Hospital where he has been a patient for the past month.  He had been in ill health the past year.  He was born in Martins Ferry Feb. 16, 1901, a son of the late Henry and Wilhelmina Diehl.  He was employed in the freight station of the Baltimore and Ohio for the past 16 years.  He was a member of the North Street Methodist Church.

        Surviving are his wife, Regina A. Smith Diehl; a son, James A. Smith, two daughters, Mrs. Edward A. Briggs, Martins Ferry; and Mrs. Claude Wright, San Lorenzo, Calif; a brother, Charles Diehl, Elm Grove; three sisters, Mrs. Ernest Marbach, Mrs. Paul Engstrom and Mrs. Russell Watson, all of Chicago, and eight grandchildren.

        Friends received at the Altmeyer Funral Home, 1400 Eoff St., where services will be in the chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday.  The Rev. W. D. Winters will officiate.  Burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

 

Falzgraf, Benjamin F. Falzgraf

       Benjamin F. Falzgraf, a native of Woodsfield, Ohio, died Friday, November 25, 1960 at the Weed County Hospital, Colorado.

       Mr. Falzgraf, a well known farmer who lived near Farmers Spur, Northwest of Greeley, Colorado, was born Dec. 18, 1880 in Woodsfield, O.

He was a graduate of the Univ. of Colorado Law School in 1908.

       He married Gladys Decker, July 8, 1908, in Greeley.

       Mr. Falzgraf was a member of the First Meth. Ch., Greeley Lodge 489 BPOE, and several farm organizations.

       He is survived by his wife; 3 sons and 2 da; Lt. Col. B. A. Falzgraf, of L. A. Calif.; John M. Falzgraf of Aurora, Lt. Col. B. G. Falzgraf, of Redlands, Calif; Mrs. Lee Kerns of Kansas City, Missouri & Mrs. Conrad Kunze, of La Mesa, Calif; 1 brother and 3 sisters, Sam Falzgraf, of Cameron, O, Mrs. Barbara Walton, of Mingo Junction, O; Mrs. Louise Metzger, of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Mrs. Mary Pfalzgraph, of Boulder, Colorado. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren.

       Funeral services were held Tues. afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Adamson Memorial Chapel. Interment was in Linn Grove.

 

Gatten, Martha R. Gatten

Martha R. Gatten, daughter of Obadiah and Sarah Sparks Nalley, was born in Wayne Township, Monroe County, Ohio, on March 19, 1884, and departed this life on March 30, 1960, being at the time of her death, 76 years and eleven days of age.
She was united in marriage with John Gatten on August 5, 1905. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a good neighbor.
She was a member of The Richfork Church of Christ.

Surviving are her husband and five children, Floyd Gatten, of Woodsfield, Route 2; Mrs. Flavil Bates, of Woodsfield, Route 3; Mrs. Evalee Harold and Mrs. Winona Abricht, of Marietta, Ohio, and Mrs. Irene Stultz, of Ashland, Ohio.  Also, surviving are fourteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one brother, George Nalley, of Creston, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. Nora Fisher, of Akron, Ohio, and Mrs. Laura Smith, of Oregon. Besides these, she leaves other relatives and many friends.

One son, John Junior, two grandsons, and one great-granddaughter, preceded her in death.

       Funeral services were conducted by Minister J. V. A.  Traylor at The Bauer and Turner Funeral Chapel on Saturday afternoon, April 2nd, at two o'clock. Burial was made in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield, Ohio.

 

Highman, Gerald Aldine Highman

Gerald Aldine Highman was born May 6,1905, in Monroe County, Ohio, the son of the late Charles F. and Pearl Nalley Highman. He departed this life Mar.15, 1960 at his home on Lewisville, Oh., Rt.2, being at the time of his death 54 years, ten months and ten days of age.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Leland D. Highman, a casualty of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Heskett Highman, three children; Harold, of Woodsfield; Merril Highman of Columbus; and Virginia Cecil, of Lewisville, Rt.2 and five grandchildren. Two brothers, Glen Highman, of Woodsfield, and Edsel Highman of Graysville, Route; and three sisters ,Waneta Dalrymple, of Dayton; Audrey Gatten and Mabel Hines, both of Lewisville, Route, also survive; as well as a host of nephews and nieces.

At an early age the deceased became a member of The Methodist Church. Reared in southeastern Ohio, he was associated in his youth with the W.E. Lamneck Company of Columbus and Middletown, Oh.  In middle-age he returned to the Lewisville community to engage in agricultural and business pursuits. He endeared himself not only to his family but to his many friends, who knew him by his consistant loyalty and constant good humor.

Funeral services were held in The Bauer and Turner Funeral Chapel on Sat. p.m. at two o'clock, with Rev. John Grimes, of The Free Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in Oaklawn Cemetery.

        Funeral services for Mrs. Grace Howell, 83, of this city will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at Kidd Funeral Home.

        Mrs. Howell died at 5 o'clock Monday afternoon at Public Convalescent home in Toulon, wehere she had lived for past year.

        Rev. Eugene Anderson, pastor of Toulon Baptist church, will officiate.

        Burial will be in Stringtown cemetery.

        Visitation is from 7 to 9 o'clock tonight at funeral home.

        She was a daughter of Edgar and Lavina Kincade* Claybaugh and was born October 4, 1876 in Kewanee.

        She was a graduate of both Toulon High school and Toulon academy and later took nurse's training in Chicago.

        Mrs. Howell was an active member of Toulon Baptist church and for many years as clerk of Peoria Baptist association.

        She was married April 21, 1937, at Orion to William Howell, of Toulon who preceded her in death.

        Mrs. Howell is survived by a brother and three sisters, Claude C. Claybaugh and Clara, Mrs. W. O. Goodwin, of Toulon; Mrs. Edith Kilby, of Orion, and Mrs. Mary Hobbs, of Galva and a number of nieces and nephews.

        Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister.

Mrs.  Charlotte  Jackson  Dies  Unexpectantly  After  Brief  Illness

        Mrs. Charlotte A. Jackson, 83, of Lewisville Route 2, died early Monday morning at her home following a brief illness.

        Born July 26, 1876, near Lewisville, she was a daughter of Isaac and Hannah Keylor Brown.  She was a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ.

        Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Carl Tubaugh, of Woodsfield Route 4, and Mrs. Wilber Lude, of Moundsville; three sons, Carl, of Lewisville Route 2, Lawrence, of Cambridge, and Oliver, of Cuyahoga Falls; several grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.

        Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. (DST) at the Bauer and Turner funeral home, Woodsfield, with Ministers Charles Hendershot and John Hamilton officiating.  Burial will be in Fairview cemetery.

 

Joseph, Verne R. Joseph

        Verne R. (Dick) Joseph, 46, collapsed Sunday afternoon while riding a Canton City Lines bus at Mahoning rd and Kirby ave NE.  He was rushed to Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.  At the time he was stricken he was returning from work as a fireman on the Pennsylvania Railroad.

        Mr. Joseph, who resided at 1320 15th st NW, was born in East Sparta and was a Canton resident the last 10 years.  He was a veteran of World War II having seen action in the Battle of the Bulge.  He belonged to the Vetrans [sic] of Foreign Wars, Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and Sertoma Club.

        He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Diehl of East Sparta and Mrs. Bernice Abel of Pittsburgh.  His parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Joseph.

        Rev. Herbert E. Troge will officiate at funeral services Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Krieghbaum funeral home.  Burial will be in East Sparta Cemetery.  Calling hours at the parlors are Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  Sertoma club members will serve as pallbearers.

Rites    Held    For    Miss    Belle    Scott*

        Miss Belle Kinkade,* 85, Scott,* a native of Paulding county, died at 4:15 p.m. Saturday in Defiance City Hospital, where she had been a patient 12 days.

        Miss Kinkade had resided in the Remus Moore home, Scott,* for the past 25 years.  She moved to Ada recently and from there to the Hubbard Rest Home a few days before being admitted to the hospital.

        She was a member of the Grover Hill Church of Christ and W.S.C.S. at Scott.*

        Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Daisy McElhaney, Ada, and several nieces and nephews.

        Services were conducted at 2 p.m. of last week in the Didrick funeral home, Grover Hill, the Rev. Robert Bryan officiating.

        Burial was in Middle Creek cemetery.

        Mrs. Maud Knight, 70, of 3543 LaSalle Ave., died of a heart ailment at 2 p.m. Tuesday at her residence.

        Mrs. Knight was born July 12, 1890, in St. Marys, W. Va., a daughter of William and Huldi Cronin Coen and came to Youngstown 30 years ago from Saint Marys.  She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Struthers.

        Besides her husband, Brady, to whom she was married 53 years ago, Mrs. Knight leaves three sons, Oral of Cumberland, W. Va., Glen and Clifford, both of Struthers; a daughter, Mrs. Lulu Shaw of Chester, W. Va.; a brother, John Coen of Youngstown; a sister, Mrs. Mary Stein of Newell, W. Va.; and 12 grandchildren.

        Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the D. A. Davidson Funeral Home, Struthers, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

        George (Clem) Keysor,* 80, of 105 Ashtabula St., North Fairfield, passed away suddenly Wednesday at this residence.  Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kubach-Smith Funeral home, North Fairfield, with Rev. James Magaw, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating.  Burial was made in the village cemetery.

        A native of Woodsfield, Mr. Keysor* had been a resident of North Fairfield for the past 13 years.  He came here from Ashland.

        Mr. Keysor* was employed by the Durable Mat. Co. in Norwalk until his retirement eight years ago.

        Surviving are his wife Ida; a son Albert of Mansfield, two daughters, Mrs. Edith Bilger of Savannah and Mrs. Mildred Ballou of Ashland; six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Clara Steed of Woodsfield.

        Oleta Louise Lawrence, seven-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Lawrence, County Rd. 246, Wilkin Corners area, died at 10:23 p.m. Sunday in Childrens'  Hospital, while being admitted.

        The child had been ill a few days and was a patient in Newark Hospital and upon the advice of a physician was transferred to the hospital in Columbus.  Death was attributed to dysentery and other complications.

        The parents, a sister Cora Ann, and a brother, Wayne Richard, survive.  Mrs. Lawrence is the former Mary Shaffer and the grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Barcus of Newark and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Lawrence of the Wilkin Corners vicinity.

        The Rev. D. W. Donaghue will officiate at services at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel in Criss Brothers Funeral Home.  Burial in Wilson Cemetery.

        Mrs. Eva Lucas,* 74 years old, lifelong resident of Marco, died at 10:00 o'clock Monday morning at the Freeman - Greene county hospital.  She had been in failing health for four months and seriously ill for ten days.

        Mrs. Lucas was born north of Marco on Jan. 16, 1886, and was the daughter of Shade and Sally Stafford Baker.

        She is survived by the husband, John Lucas, to whom she was married Oct. 16 1904; two daughters, Miss Alma Lucas of Marco and Miss Esther [sic--Ester] Lucas of Indianapolis; one son, Charles E. Lucas of Marco; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  One son died in infancy.

        The body of the deceased was taken to the Anderson - Poindexter Memory Chapel here, where friends may call after 6:00 o'clock this evening.

        Funeral services will be held at the Marco Methodist church at 2:00 o'clock CDT Wednesday afternoon, and burial will be made in the Marco cemetery.  The body will be removed to the church at noon Wednesday.

        CHATHAM -- John Mendenhall, 57,* of Detroit, Mich., died at a rest home after a long illness.  Formerly of Chatham, he had been an oil field worker.  In World War II he served in the calvary.

        Surviving are four sisters, Edna of Detroit, with whom he had lived; Mrs. Mary Bowersock of Bay City, Mich.; Mrs. Myrtle Thomas of Albany, O.; and Mrs. Louise Kirkbride of Elyria.

        Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Elliott Funeral Home in Lodi with Rev. Arthur Deutsch of Chatham officiating.

        Burial will be in Chatham Cemetery.  Friends will be received at the funeral home Saturday afternoon and evening.

        Emil Hartman Mercer of Wolfpen, near New Martinsville, died Tuesday, Jan. 12th at his home.

        He was born in Wetzel County, Sept. 8, 1875, a son of Lebon and Rebecca Van Camp Mercer.

        His first wife, Jessie Mae Wells Mercer, died in 1910.

        Surviving are his widow, Sarah Ann Morgan Mercer; three sons, Clarence F. at home, Clyde of Wellsburg and Emil of New Martinsville; one daughter, Mrs. Wiley Lancaster of Middlebourne; two stepsons, Russell Morgan of Canton, Ohio and Okey Morgan of Cedar Key, Fla. and five step daughters including the following of Moundsville:  Mrs. Leota Paith, Mrs. Della Simon, Mrs. Josie Grimm and Mrs. Effie Wilson and Mrs. Jessie Harris of Lumberport W. Va.  Eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; and 36 step-grandchildren; and 34 step-great-grandchildren.

        He is a member of the Wolfpen Methodist Church and was a retired farmer.

        The remains were moved to the Iams Funeral Home at New Martinsville, where services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. officiated by Rev. Sumner Sawyers with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Suddenly

        Clyde L. Miller, a well known farmer who resided on the Bradford Road near Bridgeport, passed away very suddenly last Friday* evening as he sat reading the newspaper.  He had been in the hospital several times and returned home just three weeks ago.  He had been ill about five years but his death was very unexpected!

        He was born at Lyons, Indiana, 57 years ago.  He and Mrs. Miller celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary last April 3.  They moved to the Bridgeport area about 11 years ago coming from Bloomfield.  He was a member of the Scotland Presbyterian church.

        Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hampton Funeral Home with burial at Maple Hill cemetery.

        Survivors include the widow, Lois Miller; two daughters, Donna Snyder of Beech Grove, Dova Sokol, Johnson City, Tennessee; three grandchildren; his mother, Maude Miller of Linton; three brothers, Joseph of Terre Haute, Harvey and Jack of Gas City; and two sisters, Jane Miller, Gas City, and Gertrude Kirkley, Linton.

Frank  Morris,  Retired  Parole  Officer,  Is  Dead

        Frank Morris, state parole officer and former educator and insurance salesman, died at 9:25 Saturday night at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.

        Mr. Morris, 73, 2114 W. Market, had been ill for two months.

        He retired April 30, 1957, after 25 years of service with the state bureau of probation and parole in this area.  His territory, at the time of his retirement, covered Trumbull, Ashtabula and Geauga counties.

Covered Four Counties

        At one time he supervised the activities of parolees in four other counties:  Mahoning, Jefferson, Carroll and Harrison.

        He was responsible for handling as many as 200 paroled persons at one time during his quarter century with the state.

        Born March 22, 1887, in Monroe County, a son of Charles and Barbara Christman Morris, he was graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1911.  Prior to attending the school, he taught for a while in Belmont County.

        After his graduation, he went to Bath Township High School, Summit County, as principal.  Later he taught at Quaker City, O., where he had graduated in 1906.  He was also a principal at Senecaville, O., for three years.

        Mr. Morris came to Trumbull County as an educator.  He was superintendent of schools at Champion for five years and also headed the staff at Leavittsburg for two years.  He quit teaching in 1924 while administrator for the Warren Township schools.

        During the next eight years he sold life insurance in this area.  In 1932 he was appointed parole officer for this district.

        He leaves his wife, the former Mae Pearl Leonard, whom he married June 11, 1913; a daughter, Mrs. Miles (Bernadine) Baldwin, Warren; a son, Francis J., Warren; two sisters, Mrs. Beryl Dearth, Champion, and Mrs. Emmet Swank, Salesville; three brothers, Phil, Salesville, Rodney, Cambridge, and Allan, Saraland, Ala.; and two grandchildren.

        Funeral services will be held at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.  Burial will be at Crown Hill Burial Park.

        Friends may call at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9 pm.

        Friends are asked to give material tributes to Tod Ave. Methodist Church building fund or to the American Cancer Society.

        Burial rites for Juacinata Morris, still born at Perry County Memorial hospital Saturday morning were held at St. Mary’s cemetery Saturday afternoon.

        The infant was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Morris, 1137 Ninth Street, Tell City.

        Surviving beside the parents are two brothers, Robert Wayne and Jan*** Steven and a sister, Debra, all at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Morris and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kahler, all of Tell City.

        Mrs. Minnie M. Polen, 81, of Lewisville, widow of W. C. Polen, died Tuesday afternoon at her home.

        Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Chester Paulus, of near Woodsfield; two sons, Charles and Clelland Polen, of Lewisville; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Yoho, of Lewisville Route 2.

        Mrs. Polen was a member of the Buchanan Presbyterian Church.

Roth, William W. Roth

        William W. Roth, 67, of 1312 N. Gilbert St., a retired group agent for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., died at 8:05 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 6, 1960) at the Lakeview Memorial Hospital where he was admitted a few hours earlier following an eight-year illness.

        Born in Circleville, W. Va.,* Dec. 20, 1892, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Roth, he came to Danville with his parents at the age of 10.

        On Nov. 9, 1920, he married the former Margaret Ballein who survives along with a son, John William Roth of Wheaton  and a brother, Pearl Roth of Danville.  There are also two grandchildren.

        A brother and two sisters preceded him in death.

        He belonged to Anchor Lodge 980, AF & AM.

        Mr. Roth was interested in hunting and fishing and other outdoor activities and was an avid baseball fan.

        The body is at the Berhalter Funeral Home where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Ralph Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, with burial in Spring Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

        Mr. Rowley died Sunday at his home, 426 Greenwell road, Delhi Hills.  He was employed by the railroad for 30 years.

        Mrs. Rosa Schell was born in Berne, Switzerland on January 23, 1873, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Boesiger, and passed away at a Lincoln hospital June 21, 1960 at the age of 87 years and 5 months. At the age of 11 years she came to the United States and settled at Princeton, Nebraska.

      On February 12th, 1891, she was united in marriage to Mr. Randolph Schell, and to them were born six sons and six daughters. She lived on the farm north west of Cortland all her life till four years ago, which she spent with her son, Eldon, in Lincoln and her daughter, Mrs. Ray Tally of Firth. She was a faithful member of the German Congregational church at Princeton.

        Mrs. Schell was a good mother, hard-working and generous to her family and others.

        Mr. Schell passed away February 9, 1917, leaving the mother to run the farm and care for her children. Five daughters and a son also preceeded Mrs. Schell in death.

        Those who remain to mourn their loss are Leon and Eldon of Lincoln, Mrs. Vida Tally, Firth, Harry of Roca, Vilas and Raymond of Cortland and Mrs. Mildred Wear, Vallejo, Calif.

        Also 20 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild beside a number of other relatives and friends.

        Funeral services were held at the Cortland Congregational Church on Friday afternoon followed with interment in the Princeton Cemetery. The pallbearers were her grandchildren.

 

Stewart, Thomas M. Stewart, 73, of Woodsfield, died Wednesday afternoon, September 14, in the Barnesville hospital following an illness of the past few months.  Mr. Stewart was born in Sardis, January 11, 1887, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Stewart.  Surviving are two sons, James of Beallsville, Route 2, and Harry of the United States Army, stationed in Germany, a daughter Mrs. Glen Miller of Wadsworth, four brothers, John of Clarington, Frank, Paden City, Edward Stewart, New Cumberland, and William of East Liverpool, four sisters, Mrs. Ellie Thomas, and Mrs. Ida Nolan both of New Martinsville, Mrs. May Bittle (Billiter) Paden City, and Mrs. Josephine Hoskinson of California, and nine grandchildren.  Friends called at the Bauer and Turner funeral home where services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. J. V. A. Trayler officiating.  Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery.  [Calculated year of death = 1960]

 

Thudium, Lura Olive Thudium, nee Baker

        Mrs. Lura Olive Thudium, 69, a former resident of Nankin Road, died at 1 a.m. Wednesday in the Castle Nursing Home at Millersburg after a lingering illness.

        The daughter of James and Alice Brown Baker, she was born Sept. 2, 1890, in Monroe County.  She was a resident of Ashland County most of her life.

        She was married Dec. 25, 1912, to Earl Thudium who survives her.

        Other survivors are two sisters, Mrs. C.O. Scobey of Wooster, Mrs. Harlow Kutz of Florida; one brother, George Baker of Ashland; six nieces and five nephews.

        Mrs. Thudium was a member of the Christian Church in Florida.

        Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday from the Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. Miles Taber officiating.  Burial will be in Nankin Cemetery.

        Friends may call at Gilbert Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Lovers'    Quarrel     Ends

In     Death     Of     Girl,     17

        POMONA -- Apparently despondent over a lovers' quarrel, Donna Sue Truex, 17, of 451 Harrison St., Claremont, used a .38 caliber pistol to take her life Wednesday night on a quiet residential street here.

        Police found the girl's body behind her car parked in the 900 block on east Lexington street.  A few minutes prior, Arline Green of 973 E. Lexington St. had notified police she saw a car pull to the curb and noticed someone walk to the rear.  Seconds later, she heard a gunshot and called police headquarters.

        Detectives Boyd Oliver and Charles Roland said Donna Sue's right hand still clutched the weapon.

        Her boy friend told police Donna Sue called him after they quarreled and threatened to commit suicide.  "I didn't believe her because she was always threatening to shoot herself," he said.

        Karen Irene Truex, 18, the dead girl's sister, said Donna slashed her wrists last summer in an attempt to take her life.

        Maynard Truex, a Claremont College custodian, told police his dead daughter was highly emotional.  He also said he kept his revolver well hidden in their home.

        A deputy corner [sic--coroner] for Los Angeles County ordered the victim's body taken to Todds Mortuary, Pomona, for an autopsy.  Funeral arrangements are to be handled later by Richardson - Peterson Mortuary, Ontario.

        CLAREMONT -- Funeral services for Donna Sue Truex, 17, of 451 Harrison St., whose body was found behind her car Wednesday, will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in Claremont Chapel.

        She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Truex and was born June 10,1942 in Lodi, Ohio.  She had lived in California since she was 3.  Survivors are her parents, a sister, two brothers and her maternal grandparents.

        Private interment in Oak Park Cemetery will follow chapel services that will be conducted by Peter J. Wilson, evangelist of the Ontario Church of Christ.

 

Voland, Mable Voland, nee Hunlock

        Mrs. Alonzo D. Voland (Mable Hunlock Evinger), 67, of Hoytville, died Friday morning in Toledo State Hospital after a long illness.

        She was born in Bradner Aug. 17, 1893, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hunlock (Diantha Ferguson).  She was married to Guy Evinger in 1913 and later to Mr. Voland, who died in 1958.

        Surviving are a son, Lebert Evinger, Flint, Mich.; a stepson, Ercell Boland [sic--Voland], Hoytville; a brother, Jay Hunlock, Chicago; a sister, Chloe Hunlock, Geneva; a grandchild and three step-grandchildren.

        She was a member of the Hoytville EUB Church and the Pythian Sisters.

        Friends may call at the Harmon Funeral Home, McComb, where the funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John Hoover officiating.  Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, North Baltimore.

        One child was stillborn and the other lived about three hours.

        Surviving with the parents are five brothers and sisters, Carl, Dale, Arthur Finley, Marilyn K., Larry and Billy; and the grandparents, Mrs. Walter Ward and Floyd Pope, both of Columbus.

        The infant was born March 24 at Alliance City Hospital.  Surviving beside the parents are a sister, Karla, and a brother, Earl, both at home; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Talbott of Whittier, Calif., and Mrs. Pearl Kyllos of Alliance.

        Donald Woodstock, minister of the Church of Christ, will conduct graveside funeral services Friday at Fairmount Memorial Park.  Vogt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

        SEBRING, March 28 -- Graveside funeral services for Karene Marie Windland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Windland of 265 E. Pennsylvania Ave., will be held tomorrow at Fairmount Memorial Park in Alliance.

        The infant died at 10:05 p.m. last night at Alliance City Hospital, where she was born Thursday.

        Surviving beside her parents are a brother, Earl and a sister, Karla, and three grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Talbott of Whittier, Calif., and Mrs. Pearl Kyllos of Alliance.

        Mrs. Katie Yeager, 65, widow* of Adam Yeager, died at 8:30 o'clock Sunday night at Shady Lane nursing home where she had been a patient two years.

        Funeral rites will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Reed funeral home with burial at Garland Brook cemetery.  Casket is open at the funeral home.

        Survivors are a brother, Floyd Pope; and two sisters, Mrs. Lona Campbell of Hope and Mrs. Ida Moore of Shelby county.

        Mrs. Yeager was a native of Shelby County, but resided in the Hartsville community before becoming a patient at the nursing home.

*Submitter's Note: According to his death certificate, Adam did not die until May 23, 1962 in Madison, Jefferson Co., Indiana.  According to her 1940 census in Hartsville, Indiana, she was divorced.
