Mr. Denoon was pronounced dead on arrival at City Hospital by Dr. Roy C. Costello, deputy county coroner.  Death resulted from compound fractures of the skull and both legs and a crushed chest.

Police said the westbound Pennsy freight had as its engineer William D. Henry, 45, of Westerville. Otis Shearer of Bucyrus was the conductor and Ralph Snyder of Columbus was the brakeman.

Police timed the accident at 9:51 a.m. on the railroad tracks a half mile east of Walnut St.  Henry said the freight was moving about 35 miles an hour when he first saw Mr. Denoon walking on the tracks with his back to the locomotive.

Henry said he sounded the diesel's horn and rang the bell, also applying the emergency brakes, but Mr. Denoon did not appear to notice.  The engineer said the victim apparently believed the noise was caused by another freight approaching from the west at the same time.

At the last moment, Mr. Denoon turned and saw the locomotive and tried unsuccessfully to jump clear, the engineer said.  His report was corroborated by the conductor.  Snyder said he did not witness the incident because it was out of his line of vision.

Submitter's Notes:

        * His mother was ELIZABETH  JANE  KINKADE.

** The U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918, and  the Social Security Death Index both give, January 9, 1882 as the birth date; and his tombstone on the findagrave.com web site shows 1882.

*** This is confusing.  Pearl shares his tombstone with his daughter engraved as HAZEL  ROTH  WILSON, but I do not know how the WILSON name fits in with the son who is listed as GEORGE  E.  ROTH in the 1920 and 1930 census and named as George Roth of St. Francis, Wis., in the obituary of Hazel Wilson in 1975.  I think it is a misprint in Pearl’s obituary.
