BODY OF MAN FOUND IN REAR SEAT OF CAR
Akron detectives say
robbery could be a motive in the slaying of a 40- year-old cook whose body was
found at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, in the rear seat of his car on the city's
near north side.
Police and
investigators from the Summit County coroner's office are calling the death of
William Morris of Jeanette Avenue a homicide.
Prior to being put
in the car, authorities believe, the man was beaten with a blunt instrument and
his body dragged.
"It is a
homicide and it is under investigation," said coroner's investigator
Joseph Orlando.
Lt. John Lower said
Morris, a cook at Mijo's "House of Paprikash” at the corner of Exchange
and Main streets, was last seen at about 8 p.m. Tuesday at a downtown bar where
he had cashed his paycheck. Police
declined to identify the bar.
Lower said the
victim's family had last seen him Tuedsay morning when he left for work. He said Morris' wallet was not found at the
scene and indicated that "robbery could be the motive, but we are not
sure."
An Akron policeman
investigating a parking violation discovered the body in the rear seat of
Morris' 1974 AMC at about 1:30 p.m. The
car was parked on Bass Avenue, which runs between Cuyahoga Street and Glenwood
Avenue.
