Man electrocuted
when truck hits
lines
A Zanesville man was killed Friday when the dump truck he
was operating at Simco Peabody Inc.'s Broken Aro Mine on County Road 6 came
into contact with power lines, according to news release from the Coschocton
County Sheriff''s Department.
According to the release, Raymond L. Harper, 41, apparently
was electrocuted at about 2 p.m. when the raised bed of his dump truck struck
Simco Peabody power lines carrying 12,500 volts of electricity.
Harper was driving a truck owned by Marple Brothers
Trucking of Zanesville and was dumping dirt.
Fire destroyed the truck.
In a written statement to deputies, Mike R. Swingle of
Crooksville, who was driving another truck at the scene, said that after
Harper's truck struck the power lines, Harper, who was in the truck, opened his
door and grabbed the lever that lowers
the truck bed.
Swingle said he thought Harper then jumped to the ground,
but Sheriff Deputy David Wilson, who was the first officer at the scene, told
The Tribune he believes this is when Harper was electrocuted. He said Harper was thrown 10-15 feet.
Harper probably did not know an electrical current was
running through the truck, Wilson said.
According to him, it is possible Harper did not think the power lines were
functional.
The Coshocton Emergency Squad transported Harper to
Coshocton County Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, a
CCMH official said. She said Harper's
body has been released to Bryan Funeral Home of Zanesville.
Firefighters from the Conesville and South Tuscarawas fire
departments extinguished the fire that destroyed the truck, a 1972 Ford. Coshocton County REACT also was on the
scene, according to deputies.
Wilson said he was told by a Simco Peabody official that
Federal Mine Safety personnel will be notified of the incident because it
happened on Simco Peabody property.

James A. Hinton, 26, of Lowell Rt. 2* was killed following
a one-car accident at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday on Washington County 60, Adams Twp.,
according to a dispatcher at the Ohio Highway Patrol.
Hudson was the only person in the car.
Tarcella Hendershot,

was dead on arrival at Memorial. He was
transported to the hospital by the Lowell Emergency Squad.
The dispatcher reported that Hinton was going east on

The accident, which still is under investigation, occurred
in a relatively straight stretch of road, but it was foggy and roads were damp,
the dispatcher said. A blood test will
be taken, but it will be awhile before the results are known, the dispatcher
said.

Businessman, Civic
Leader
James R.
Stephen Dies
by CORA HUCKINS
and MARGIE SCHLAGETER
DAYTONA BEACH -- A
stock car racing enthusiast, sportsman and area businessman who was actively
involved in civic and political affairs, James R. Stephen, owner of the former
Stephens Pontiac, died Sunday in his home, 19 Elizabeth Lane, after a lengthy
illness. He was 68.
Mr. Stephen was a member of the board of directors of Sun
Bank of Volusia County since his appointment in October 1965, when it was
Commercial Bank. Hank Coleman,
president and chief executive officer of Sun Bank, when contacted Sunday,
said, "Jim surely will be missed,
especially within our organization. He
was one of our guiding forces."
Mr. Stephen's interest and involvement in stock car racing
dates back many years. He was a member
of the board of the International Speedway Corp. and sponsored Fireball Roberts
in his early days of racing along with many other drivers. In 1962 he sponsored the No. 22 Pontiac,
which won the Daytona 500, driven by Roberts and prepared by Smokey
Yunick. Roberts died in a racing
accident in July 1964.
Bill France Jr., president and chief executive officer of
International Speedway Corp. said of Stephen, "He was a great friend of
the Speedway corporation and as a board member, his superb business judgment
made a great contribution to the speedway.
He was a fair man and a leading businessman in our community, who has
been actively involved in civic and political activities. He was very civic minded."
Although he never ran for office Mr. Stephen took part in
the local, state and national democratic political scene. He and E. William Crotty, chairman of the
executive committee of the Democratic National Committee, and the board of
directors, were aligned politically and in various business ventures. "Jim
was just a class guy," Crotty said Sunday.
The two were frequent guests at the White House, according
to Crotty, and were among those invited as guests of President and Mrs. Carter
to the swearing in ceremony when Edmund Muskie became secretary of state.
Mr. Stephen was on Mondale's national finance board during
his campaign for the U.S. presidency.
Born in Summerfield, Ohio, Mr. Stephen came here in 1949
from Fort Lauderdale, where he was in the automobile business. He bought and operated the Pontiac
dealership as Stephens Pontiac. His
nephew, Ray Ferguson entered the business in 1966, at which time it became
known as Stephens Ferguson Pontiac and Mercedes. In 1975, Ferguson bought out his uncle.
Mr. Stephen at one time was one of the country's leading
General Motors distributors with dealerships in Baltimore, Atlanta and Daytona
Beach.
Mr. Stephen was a member of Westminister by the Sea Presbyterian
Church and served on the building committee when the church was built.
He served on numerous other boards and was active in a
large number of other organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Lana; a son, James Jr., Daytona
Beach; two daughters, Diane Brown, Lake Forest, Ill., and Susan Graham,
Atlanta; two granddaughters; two sisters, Geneva Ferguson, Ormond Beach, and
Emma Besancon, Milford, Mich.; and two brothers, Richard, Willington [sic ?
