Gertrude M. Allen, 86, a resident of Copeland Oaks in
Sebring for the past five years and a former resident of Culver, Ind., died at
3:40 p.m. Monday at Alliance Community
Hospital.
Mrs. Allen was born June 6, 1909, in Bridgeport, to Rudolph
and Sarah Baver* Marty, and graduated from Minerva High School in 1927.
Employed as a grade school teacher, she taught in the
Steubenville District from 1929 to 1945, and Culver Schools from 1949 until she
retired in 1971.
Mrs. Allen attended Ohio University and graduated from
Muskingum College.
She was a member of Culver United Methodist Church, Culver
City Club, and Order of the Eastern Star in Culver.
Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband, Sam H.,
and a brother, Howard Marty. She is
survived by a sister, Mary M. Wilson of Butler, Pa.
Memorial services will be at 3:30 p.m. April 10 at Wesley
United Methodist Church in Culver, and at 11 a.m. April 13 in Bennett Chapel at
Copeland Oaks.
Arrangements by Gednetz-Ruzek Funeral Home in Sebring
included cremation.

Ruth C. Bauman, 83, went to be
with the Lord on Feb. 18, 1996.
She was born in Akron and had
lived her entire life in this area. She was a graduate of the University of
Akron and taught in the Akron Public Schools for 32 years. She was a member of
Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, a member of F.G.H. Story League, Delta Zeta
Sorority, and the Akron Woman's City Club.
She is survived by her husband
of 55 years, Rev. Louis Bauman; daughter, Carol (Bruce) Gradwohl of Doylestown,
Ohio; son, David of Philadelphia, Pa.; grandsons, Timothy Gradwohl, Mark
(Julie) Gradwohl; great-grandsons, Michael and Andrew Gradwohl.
Services will be held at 2 p.m.
THURSDAY at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. David L. Scharf officiating.
Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call at the church one hour

Daughter of the late
Robert Thomas Richeson and Louisa Louetta Voland Richeson, she was born Aug.
15, 1927 in Gas City, Ind., and was a member of the Lowell Avenue Baptist
Church.
She was married to James Wesley (Dick) Bennett Dec. 18,
1945, who preceded her in death Oct. 20, 1994.
She is survived by one daughter and two sons, Helen
(Cookie) Jones of Louisville, Jimmie A. Bennett of Shepherdsville, and Stanley
Lee Bennett of Gas City, Ind.; three grandsons and two granddaughters, Tim Hines
of Cayce, S.C., Rob Hines and Anissa Bennett of Louisville, and Christopher
Bennett and Misty Bennett of Gas City, Ind.; two great-granddaughters and one
great-grandson, Margaret Danielle Hines and Amber Nicole Hines of Cayce, S.C.
and Justin Taylor Hines of Louisville; one brother and one sister, Robert Lee
Richeson and Patricia Louise McGlothin of Gas City, Ind.; and several other
relatives.
She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter,
Melissa Bennett.
Funeral was 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 at Parrott &
Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville by the Rev. Scott Wilkins and the Rev.
William R. Beard. Burial was in
Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.

MIDDLEFIELD -- Services were May 26 at Middlefield First
United Methodist Church for Lester Betts, who died May 22, 1996, at Geauga
Memorial Hospital, Chardon.
The Rev. Jack Schierloh officiated.
He was born July 8, 1923, in Batesville, son of David and
Gail Clucus Betts. He graduated from
Beaver Rural High School with a perfect attendance record for the entire 12
years.
He started driving a truck soon after graduation in 1940
and soon built his own trucking business.
He retired in 1985 and moved to Middlefield in 1990, but spent his
winters in Florida.
He was a World War II veteran with the 419th Engineers
Division and served in Europe. He was a
32nd-degree Mason and past master of the local chapter at Quaker City. He belonged to the Aladdin Shrine of
Columbus, the Barnesville Eastern Star, past president of Pennyroyal Ruritan
Cub, Middlefield Kiwanis Club, the Elks Club, Lehigh Acres in Florida, and a
member of the First United Methodist Church, Middlefield.
He was preceded in death by a son, Allan [sic--Allen]
Betts; two brothers, Marion and Chester Betts; and a sister, Ruth Doyle.
Mr. Betts leaves his wife, Marie Betts, whom he married May
8, 1953, a daughter, Julee; five grandsons; a great-grandson; cousins, inlaws
and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Haitian

Roy Chester Beymer, 84, 67183 Pogue Road, St. Clairsville, died
Sunday, Aug. 11, 1996 at his home. He was born Oct. 1, 1911 in Belmont County,
a son of the late Richard Beymer and Minnie Jackson Petre.
He was a former employee of the former Bellaire Enamel.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
wife, Gladys Gertrude Staib Beymer; a brother, Ralph Strong.
Surviving are two sons,
Chester of Proctor, W. Va. and Richard of Woodsfield; a sister,
Marguerite Wiggins of Bellaire; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two
great-great-grandchildren.
Private services were held at the convenience of the family
at Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville, with the Rev. Kim Anderson

Mildred Eugenia Blackstone,
83, Hillcrest Manor, Lewisville, died September 26, 1996, at Wheeling Hospital,
Medical Park. She was born at Lewisville, January 27, 1913, a daughter of the
late Joseph Frank and Ida Mary (Dick) Zwick.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church (Burkart) near
Lewisville, where she was a member of the Catholic Women's Club and the Altar
Society.
In addition to her parents,
she was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Blackstone. They were married
on January 31, 1933. She was also preceded in death by a son Virgil Joseph
Blackstone and a daughter, Darlene Regina Liston.
Surviving are a daughter,
Mrs. John (Mary) Sheets of Columbus; seven sons, Vernon J(Cora), Frank (Wanda),
Dale (Hilda), Francis (Judy), David (Nicki), Patrick (Aleta) all of Lewisville,

NEWPORT -- Monna Sue Bond, 59, of Newport Route 1 died at 4:30
p.m. Tuesday (April 16, 1996) at her
home following an illness.
She was born Jan. 26, 1937, in Schley, Ohio, to Clarence
and Carrie Herlan Binegar.
She was a graduate of Newport High School with the class of
1954. She had been employed at
Vogue-Swift Cleaners following her graduation and was later employed at
Broughton's Dairy for 33 years as accounts receivable supervisor.
She was a member of Beech Grove United Methodist
Church. She enjoyed antiques and
hunting with her husband. She also
enjoyed the out-of-doors, gardening and her family.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Ray Bond, whom she
married June 26, 1960; one daughter; Brenda Sue Bagley and her husband, Robert,
of Mineral Wells, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Brandi, Bobby, and Lora Bagley;
her mother of Newport Route 1; three brothers, Merle Binegar of Antioch, Orval
Binegar of Eureka, W.Va., and Lyle Binegar of Newport; two sisters, Phyllis
Bowersock of Rinard Mills and Patricia Lamp of Newport; and a number of nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father; two brothers,
Kenneth and Furl Aaron Binegar; and two sisters, Delorace Thomas and Elwanda
Congleton.
Services are at 1 p.m. Friday at Newport United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Gary Hicks officiating.

CALDWELL -- Gary Lee Brown, 49, of Ava, died Friday (Nov.
1, 1996) in Columbus, at the home of Marsha Bond, his loving and trusted
companion.
He was born April 9, 1947, in Noble County, son of Virgil
and Edna Everly Brown of Ava.
He was a former employee of Davis Tree Service of
Sarahsville, and National Cash Register of Cambridge. He was a former supervisor for Econo Express and was a former truck
driving instructor for the Mid-East Ohio Vocational School. He was also a self-employed independent
truck driver.
He attended the Calvary Friends Church in Columbus. He was a social member of the Buffalo VFW,
and was a member of the Cambridge Moose Lodge, the Silver Spur Riding Club of
Ava and the Shenandoah Riding Club of Pleasant City.
In addition to his parents, he leaves a daughter, Mrs.
Steve (Tamara) West of Cambridge; four sisters, Mrs. Scott (Diane) Davis of Belle
Valley, Mrs. Roger (Carol) Kirkbride of Sarahsville, Mrs. Bill (Joyce) Hayes of
Ava and Mrs. Herman (Becky) Yeagle Jr. of Caldwell; a brother and
sister-in-law, Clayton and Jacqueline Brown of Ava; a granddaughter and a

ZANESVILLE -- James Vernon Brown, 101, of Mansfield, and
formerly of Zanesville, died Friday, June 7, 1996, at Woodlawn Nursing Home in
Mansfield.
Mr. Brown was born August 22, 1894, in Lewisville. Mr. Brown spent many years in Zanesville,
where he retired from Mosaic Tile in 1959, and was self-employed in the
business of plumbing and heating.
Surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander
and Louisa Jane McAbee Brown; his first wife, Azalea Brown; and infant
daughter, Thelma; his second wife, Laura Denbow Brown, who died March 5, 1983;
two sisters; and a brother.
Calling hours will be noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 11,
1996, at Bolin Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave.

Hospital. He was born in Monroe County,
Sept. 16, 1940, a son of the late Virgil and Mary Dunn Brown.

and a Protestant.

the late Issac G. and Everall M. Leasure Thompson.
Mrs. Brown was a member of Woodsfield Church of Christ.
Her husband, Clyde C. Brown, died Oct. 30, 1968, Also deceased is a son, Robert Brown; two
brothers; and four sisters.
Survivors include four sons, Donald and William Brown of
Graysville, Ronald Brown of Ithaca, N.Y.; four daughters, Katherine Hanlon of
Youngstown, Mary Bartlett of Niles, and Mrs. Ora Wallace and Alice Serishch,*
borth of Warren; 29 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great
grandchildren.

20, 1996 in Barnesville Hospital. She was born May 4, 1915 in Barnesville, a
daughter of the late Clyde and Ada Powell Boyd.
An Avon consultant, she was a member of the Sandy Ridge Church
of Christ, the Fair Housing Board in St. Clairsville, the Avon president Club,
the Belmont County Board of Elections and served as a volunteer at Barnesville
Hospital Gift Shop.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Roy Bunting; a son, James Leroy Bunting and a sister, Mrs. Boyd Mann.
Surviving are a daughter, Jean Ann Greathouse of Show Low,
Ariz.; a brother, Charles Boyd of Niles; seven grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren.

Dora Cronin Buterbaugh, 72, died Friday, Nov. 15, 1996, at
Pleasant Ridge Manor, West.
She was born in Chester, W. Va., on March 9, 1924, daughter
of the late Clark and Dora Randolph Cronin.
A resident of the Erie area since 1979, Mrs. Buterbaugh was
employed as a housekeeper for St. Mary's Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd A.
Buterbaugh.
Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Javens and her
husband, Walter, of West Springfield; a son, Frank Cordray and his wife,
Cheryl, of Erie; a sister, Violet McConnell of Hollywood, Fla.; seven
grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a niece and nephew.

She was born on October 11, 1924, in Adrian, the daughter
of Charles and Carrie (Fisher) Stickle.
She was married in 1944 to Arthur VanSteenkiste, who died in 1955. She was married on March 30, 1957, to Howell
Carter, who died in 1993.
She worked at the Big Boy Restaurant in Adrian. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran
Church of Riga, and the Blissfield Senior Citizens Center.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda Amstutz, of Sylvania,
and Debbie Leard, of Erie, MI; one son, John Carter, of Columbus, OH; one
sister, Isabell Neighbauer, of Towas, MI; and five grandchildren. Preceding her in death with her husbands is
one son, Arthur VanSteenkiste, Jr.; one brother, Charles Stickle; and 2 half
brothers, Gene and Richard Stickle.
Funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Tagsold

Barnesville on June 3, 1952, son of Clara Belle Kennon Christman and the late Clyde Christman.
He was an operating engineer, a Methodist by faith, and a
U.S. Navy Vietnam War veteran. He was a
member of the Eagles, Moose, and American Legion Post, all of Barnesville, and
VFW Post at Kipling.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Quaker City, are his
wife, Denise Lambert Christman, whom he married June 18, 1988; two daughters,
Bethany Brooke and Taylor Shaye, both of the home; four brothers, Clinton Christman,
Reed Christman, and Darin Christman, all of Quaker City, and Jay Christman,
Hendrysburg; several nieces and nephews.
Friends were received Thursday evening at the Thorn-Eberle

Monday, Nov. 4, 1996 in Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling. He was born near Calais,
Nov. 30, 1930, a son of the late Walter F. and Lulu J. Wehr Christman.
He was a retired heavy equipment operator for the Ohio
Operating Engineers, Local 18, Akron and was a Protestant. He also owned and
operated a farm near Jerusalem for over 40 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
three sisters, Neva Christman, Janice Powell and Florence Wells; a brother,
Clyde.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Wiley Colburn;

was a retired farmer and a member of the Seneca Valley Church of Christ near
Calais. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and a member of the
Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by his wife,
Beulah Morris Crawford, whom he married December 31,1945; one daughter, Lucile
English and her husband Paul of Woodsfield; one son Eugene Crawford and his
wife Eleanor of Summerfield; one sister, Merle Crawford of Zanesville; two
granddaughters; seven Step-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by
one brother, Raymond Crawford.

life resident of the area, he was a 1945 graduate of Alliance High School.
Mr. Davies retired from General Motors in Lordstown in 1992
following 22 years service as a millwright.
He was employed by Babcock & Wilcox for 19 years as a millwright.
He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church,
United Auto Workers Local 1714, American Legion Post 166 and Scottish Rite of
Canton; a former member of Sleepy Hollow Country Club; and a 32 Degree Mason
and 25-year member of Conrad Masonic Lodge 271. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served as
an infantry corporal in Korea.
He is survived by two
daughters, Jaime Stevens of Limaville and Robyn Scott of Alliance; two sons,
James of Limaville and Scott of Alliance; eight grandchildren; one sister, Mary
Knori of Alliance; and one brother, Richard of Homeworth.
He was preceded in death by one grandson; one sister,
Juanita Graber; and two brothers, Leroy and John.

the late Orlando Davis Sr. and Beulah Matheny Davis.
Surviving are his wie, Alice V. Lattea Davis, whom he
married April 1, 1945; two sons, Roger L. Davis and Robert L. Davis, and one

NILES -- Beryl Dearth, 98, 1500 McKinley Ave., died Thursday
in Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Nursing Home.
She was born June 29, 1897, in Guernsey County, a daughter
of Charles and Barbara Christman Morris, and had lived in the Warren area since
1923.
Mrs. Dearth retired in 1962 from Sears & Roebuck as a
sales clerk and formerly worked for Ohio Lamp.
She was a member of Champion Christian Church and Sears
Retiree Group and had enjoyed painting and crafts.
Her husband, Sherman E. Dearth, whom she married in 1935, died
March 8, 1949; four brothers, Al, Frank, Phillip and Richard Morris; and two
sisters, Mary Morris and Freda Swank are also deceased.
She leaves three stepdaughters, Mrs. Donald J. (Ganel)
Fullerton of Champion and Mrs. Charlene
Thomas and Mrs. Clyde (Jean) Calladine, both of Niles; brother, Rodney Morris
of Cambridge; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Robert Anthony Deaterla, 64, of Myrtle Beach and formerly
of Columbus, Ohio, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1996.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Deaterla was a retired service representative of 3M.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Lou Deaterla; two sons,
Matthew Deaterla and Mark Deaterla, both of Columbus; two daughters, Robin
Deaterla and Dawn Deterla, both of Columbus; two sisters, Margaret Emerson and
Rosemary Vorus; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at O.R. Woodyard Co.,
Bethel Road chapel, Columbus.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral
home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Elmer Dewbrew, 89, died Sunday at Regency Place in
Greenwood. He was a resident of
Greenwood.
He was born Dec. 8, 1906 in Green County, Ky. His parents were Bert and Erma (Peace)
Dewbrew. He was married to Paul
(Hendrick) Dewbrew. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Clint
Dewbrew of Greenwood, Bob Dewbrew of Edgewater, Fla. and George Dewbrew of
Lexington, N.C.; four daughters, Maybeth Walls, Mary Quintanilla, Thelma Frye
and Corene Surface, all of Greenwood; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren;
and a great-great-grandson.
He was employed by Center Grove High School as a custodian
for many years. He also was a farmer.
A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson St. Pierre Greenwood Chapel. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in White River Township.

She married Elmer Dewbrew March 19, 1927, in Jericho, Tenn. He preceded her in death in February. Survivors include three sons, Clint Dewbrew
of Greenwood, Bob Dewbrew of Edgewater, Fla., and George Dewbrew of Lexington,
N.C.; four daughters, Maybeth Walls, Mary Quintanilla, Thelma Frye and Corene
Surface, all of Greenwood; three sisters, Venus Harrington of Greenwood and
Grace Martin and Christine Neville, both of Indianapolis; 21 grandchildren; 41
great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Franklin St., Sandusky, died Tues., Jan. 16, 1996 at Providence Hospital,
Sandusky. He was born Aug. 12, 1910 in
Maynard, son of the late Richard and Alta Baker Donley.
He was retired from the Ford Motor Co. of Sandusky and a
Methodist by faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve Swank
Donley, who died Nov. 26, 1995, and three brothers, Frank, George and Harry
Donley.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Linda) Carpenter
of Quaker City and Kaye Matter, Sandusky; one brother, Ernie Donley, Indian
Rock, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret Holter of Troy and Marie Wheeldin of Mt.
Pleasant; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and
nephews.

GAS CITY--Allen M. "Bud" Duckworth, 67, 119 E.S.
"F" St., Gas City, died at 4:44 a.m. Sunday in Marion General
Hospital.
Mr. Duckworth was a 1948 graduate of Gas City High School,
where he played baseball and ran track.
He played in the Industrial League, pitching baseball and softball. He was an Army veteran. He was a brick mason and a former employee
of Owens-Illinois Glass Co. He was a
former member of the Gas City Fire Department.
Survivors include a sister, Alberta (Mrs. Bill) Roach, Gas
City; two nieces; and three nephews.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Needham-Storey
Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, with the Rev. Joe
Harmon officiating, assisted by the Rev. Frank Harmon. Burial will be in Estates of Serenity
cemetery, Marion.

Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 29, 1934 in Elk Township, Noble County,

He had spent his entire life on the farm where he was
born. He attended Harriettsville High
School and was a member of the Road Fork Baptist Church. He had been engaged in farming and cutting
timber.
He is survived by his father and stepmother, Lee and
Blanche Fogle of Zanesville and his stepfather and mother, John and Frances
Lori of Lower Salem Route 2; four sons, Jeff Fogle and his wife Diane, Randy
Fogle, David Fogle and his friend Lynette Broderick, all of Route 1, Lower
Salem; and John Fogle and his wife Becky of Route 1, Waterford. He is also survived by his special friend,
Violet Hall of the home; two sisters, Louise Rice of New Concord and Donna
Fulton of Zanesville; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several
nephews and nieces.

Leola F. Greiwe, 93, a resident of the Pittsfield
Healthcare Center and formerly of Brown County and Perry, died at 7:25 p.m.
Wednesday, February 14, 1996 in the Healthcare Center.
She was born January 30, 1903 in Elkhorn Township of Brown
County, the daughter of Frederick David and Josiephenia Zivilla Keylor Greiwe.
She was a homemaker and worked for many years on the family
farm, which had been in her family for over 100 years. She attended Morrellville school in Brown
County and was a member of the Zion Methodist Church. She always enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking and visiting with
friends. She also loved to play the piano for her family and
friends.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews including Fern
Greiwe, Harold Greiwe and Josie Greiwe, all of Pana, Mardell Banks of Granite
City, Cordell Greiwe of Chambersburg, Iona Phillips of Rushville and Linda Cull
of Baylis.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three
brothers, Dana, Ben and Rollie Greiwe.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 17, 1996 at
the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with the Rev. Jay Allbright
officiating. Kathy Lewis was organist.
Pallbearers were Gary Wilkerson, Don Wilkerson, Dave
Wilkerson, Dan Reische, Cordell Greiwe, and Keith Greiwe. Burial was on the family lot of the Hersman
Cemetery.

(Feb. 2, 1996) at his home.
He was born Jan. 24, 1919, in Moss Run to Loss F. and Clara
Strickler Gutberlet. He served briefly
with the United States Army and was a member of the Non-Digressive Church of
God. He had been employed at the
Marietta Chair Factory and was later employed as an elevator operator at
Remington-Rand.
He is survived by one foster son, William D. Worstell and
his wife, Darlene, of Reno; two foster granddaughters, Ashley Worstell and
Amanda Holdren; one sister, Margaret Williamson and her husband, Oscar, of
Devola; one brother, Clyde Gutberlet and his wife, Edith, of Marietta Route 5;
one aunt, Gertrude Gutberlet of Marietta; and several nieces and nephews.
On Feb. 14, 1944, he married Lucille Greathouse. She died May 23, 1988. Also preceding him in death are three
brothers, Earl D., E. True and Dean V. Gutberlet.

Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Lee and the Rev. Virgil Waugh

Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a long illness.
Born Aug. 29, 1926 in Byesville, Ohio, he was the son of

life.
Mr. Hashman worked for RB&W in Kent until he retired in
1993.
A. U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of
Disabled American Veterans in Kent. He

Survivors include his wife, Betty M. (Brown), to whom he
had been married for 49 years; son, Joseph of Kent; daughter, Carla of Kent;

Barbara I. Heffner, 60, Shelbyville, died Monday morning at
the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.
She was born March 14, 1934, in Shelbyville, the daughter
of Maurice and Frances (Fills – sic Sills) Pope. She married Robert Heffner on March 11,
1953, and he survives.
Mrs. Heffner worked for Wellman Thermal Systems Corp. for
33 years and retired in 1994.
Other survivors include three sons, Hal Pope and David
Heffner, both of Shelbyville, and Robert J. Heffner, Bloomington; a brother,
Ted Pope, Shelbyville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from
12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Murphy Funeral Services.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral
home. The Rev. Dennis Hirschauer will
officiate. Burial will be in Lewis
Creek Baptist Cemetery.

Mark Hillard: 18-year-old
killed when car strikes tree
A Muskingum County man was killed Friday when he lost
control of his car and it struck a tree, the State Highway Patrol said
yesterday.
The car driven by Mark Hillard, 18, of Zanesville veered
off the left side of Pinecrest Drive near Sandridge Road and hit the tree
around 11:30 p.m., the patrol said.
The car overturned, trapping Hillard inside. The patrol
said Hillard, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

died at 12:15 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 1996, as a result of an automobile
accident.
He was born April
21, 1978, in Bellaire. He was an
employee of the Soft Cloth Car Wash on Maple Avenue. Mr. Hillard was an outdoorsman who loved four wheelers. He was a Nazarene/Methodist by faith.
Surviving are his parents, Mansel F. and Janet L. Edington
Hillard of Zanesville; one brother Airman 1st Class Rick L. Hillard of Abilene
Texas; paternal grandmother, Alice Chance of Somerton; and several cousins,
four aunts and four uncles.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather,
George Hillard; and maternal grandparents, Clem and Maryanna Edington.

RENO -- Donald D. "Don" Hines, 53, of Reno Star
Route died shortly afer arrival at Marietta Memorial Hospital at 8:50 a.m.
Saturday (May 18, 1996).
He was born Dec. 13, 1942, in Canton, Stark County, to Dore
K. Hines of Tucson, Ariz. and Vivian Stockdale Skaags of Newport. He moved to Marietta with his family as a
youth and was a graduate of Marietta High School. He was the owner of Hines Trucking Co. He enjoyed spending his spare time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, the former Nancy M. Rogers; two
daughters, Jackie Salyer at home and her friend, William M. Boley and Tammie
Sue Hines and her friend, Bryon Sunderman, of Reno. One grandson survives this marriage, Jonathan Salyer at
home. He also is survived by four sons
by a previous marriage, Ricky Hines, Scott Hines and Steve Hines, all of
Marietta, and Randy Hines of Albuquerque, N.M.; several grandchildren; his
parents; and a number of nephews and nieces.
Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at McClure-Schafer Funeral
Home in Marietta with the Rev. Rod Stockdale officiating. Burial is in Pine Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call from noon today until the
hour of the services at the funeral home, where the family will be present to
meet friends from 7 to 9 tonight.

and a former clerk of the Franklyn Twp Trustees. He was a member of the
Hartshorn Ridge Church of Christ for 63 years. He was a former school board
clerk of the former Stafford Local School District in Stafford. He is survived
by his wife, Irene Ovetta Ullman Hogue, whom he married Nov 2, 1935; three
daughters, Shirley Ann Wiley of Barnesville, Nancy Carol Cline and her husband
Fred, of Woodsfield and Ceinda Lee Archer and her husband Randy, of Columbus;
one son Donald Gary Hogue and his wife Carol Lee of Lewisville; 11
grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. he was proceded in death by three
brothers, Roy, Milford, and John Jr. Hogue. Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, at
the Hartshorn Ridge Church of Christ near Graysville with Evangelists Delbert
Westbrook and Claude S. Davis officiating. Burial is in Hartshorn Ridge

on Sunday, December 29, 1996.
She was born on February 20, 1911* in Guadalajara, Mexico

As a young girl, she moved with her family to Waukegan,
Illinois where she attended St. Joseph's Grade School and Waukegan Township
High School.
She was united in marriage to Alva Willard Hollingsworth of
Rose Hill, Iowa on September 23, 1930. Caroline was a member of St. Anastasia
Church in Waukegan.
She is survived by 1 son, LeRoy (Rita) Hollingsworth of
Waukegan, and a daughter, Patricia Ogilvie of British Columbia, Canada, also 10
grandchildren, Jennifer (Pete) Marutiak, Leslie (Bruce) Habjan, James (Sandi)
Hollingsworth, Mitchell Hollingsworth, Samantha Ogilvie, Bill (Sue) Pucin, Jr.,

John W. Kaster, 74, Shelbyville, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 1996
at the Heritage House Convalescent Center in Shelbyville.
Born March 26, 1922 in Rush County, he was the son of
William E. and Esta (Myers) Kaster. He
married Ella Mae Thompson on Nov. 23, 1941.
She survives. He was a farmer
and worked for the traffic division of the Indiana Department of Transportation
for 17 years, retiring in 1987. He was
a member of the Geneva United Methodist Church and the Waldron Masonic Lodge
#187. He was a graduate of Waldron High
School and was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors other than his wife include three sons, William
R. Kaster, Hobrat [sic--Hobart], Ind., Dennis W. Kaster, Crown Point,
Ind., Terrance A. Kaster, Gladewater, Texas; one daughter, Sharon Walluk,
Anchorage, Alaska; one sister, Lois Toothman, Columbus; 11 grandchildren and
three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the
Glenn E. George Funeral Home in St. Paul with the Rev. Bill Jackson and the

enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing, horse back riding, playing horseshoes and
cards. He attended First Baptist

He is survived by his wife, Lois; four sons and their

Marie and John Gillespie, Strafford, Mary and Terry Goodnight, Martha and Bill

Clara Mae Kleyman, 64, of Strasburg the past four years,
formerly of the Bolivar area most of her life, died Wednesday, June 19, 1996,
in the home of her sister, Gladys Baker, at Strasburg.
Born Sept. 12, 1932,* at Bellaire, she was a daughter of
the late Charles H. and Jessie L. Leach Workman. She retired in 1994 from the Timken Co. of Canton where she worked
as a shipper in the bearing department.
She was a member of Canton Baptist Temple and Golden Lodge
of Canton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert Kleyman,
who died June 9, 1979, and a brother, Charles "Sonny" Workman, who
died in February 1996.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Tom and
Kathleen Baker of Navarre and Clifford Baker of the home; one daughter and
son-in-law, Mary Ann and Ed Cain of Navarre; two brothers, George Workman of
Bolivar and Paul Workman of Strasburg; three sisters, Bessie McCoy of Canton, Esther
Kleyman of Bolivar and Gladys Baker of Strasburg; seven grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.

Thursday at Alliance Community Hospital following a one month illness.
She was born in North Benton on Dec. 11, 1913, to Arthur
and Elizabeth (Stickle) Davies and was a life resident of the area.
Mrs. Knori was a member of First Immanuel United Church of
Christ and the Rhoda Class of the church.
Her husband, Carl William Knori, whom she married March 28,
1937, died in 1995.
Surviving are a
daughter, Pamel Neilson of Alliance; a brother, Richard B. Davies of Homeworth;
and one grandson.

Lonnie Howard DeWayne "Pud" Kuhn, 42, of Marietta
Route 5 died at 9:30 a.m. Sunday (April 21, 1996) from injuries received in an
automobile accident on Washington County 12.
He was born April 20,1954, in Liberty Township, Washington
County, to Clarence Elmer "Toad" and Iola "Debbie" Johnson
Kuhn. He attended Skyvue High School
and was an oil field worker. His hobby
was coon hunting.
He is survived by two brothers, Earl Kuhn and his wife,
Betty, of Rinard Mills and Arlen Kuhn and his wife, Linda, of Barnesville; four
sisters, Audrey Helen Mellott and her husband, Charles, of Barnesville, Violet
Hall and her friend, Paul Fogle, of Lower Salem Route, Marjorie Hall of
Marietta and Connie Ruckman and her friend, Gene Rowe, of West Union, W. Va.;
and a number of nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Rosemary
Kuhn.
Services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday at McClure-Schafer Funeral
Home in Marietta with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery in Rinard Mills. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6

home.
He was born July 5, 1908, in Shelbyville, the son of Samuel
and Rosa (Palma) LaBarbera. On Dec. 6,
1941, he married Gertrude (Vanta) [sic--Banta], and she survives.
Mr. LaBarbera was a lifelong resident of Shelbyville. He worked for 25 years as an agent at
Metropolitan Insurance Co. of Indianapolis.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic church, Shelbyville
Elks Lodge 457, American Legion Post
70, Metropolitan Retirees Association and a former member of the Shelbyville
Eagles Lodge.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Gloria Hackworth Lattea, a resident of Annapolis for the
past 15 years, died May 10 of cardiac arrest at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
She was 69.
Born in Lynchburg, Va., Mrs. Lattea was a 1947 graduate of
Strayers Business College in Washington.
For many years she worked as a secretary and office manager
on Capitol Hill and at Douglas Aircraft, both in Washington, and later at Fort
Benning, Ga.
She then stayed home to raise her children for 17 years,
returning to work at the National Institute of Mental Health in Rockville. She
most recently worked at ARINC in Annapolis.
Her memberships included Brightwood Park United Methodist
Church and Foundry United Methodist Church, both in Washington; Millian
Memorial United Methodist Church in Wheaton; and Trinity United Methodist
Church and the Bible Study Fellowship, both in Annapolis.
Her interests included gardening, interior decorating,
reading, and activities that included her family, her friends and her church.
She also wrote her memoirs.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Charles L.
Lattea; two daughters, Karen L. Lattea of Washington and Katheleen M. Lattea
Hays of Frederick; and two grandchildren.
The
family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Robert E.
Evans Funeral Home, 1600 Annapolis Road, Bowie.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Trinity United Methodist
Church, Locust Avenue and West Street, Annapolis.

She was an aide at Barnesville Hospital, and she was an
employee of Timken Roller Bearing, Canton. She attended Seneca Valley Church of
Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arch Leach, in June
1985; two brothers, Benjamin F. and
Earl E. Betts; a sister, Florence
Starr.
She leaves three step-sons, Rex, Neil and Gervis Leach, all of
Quaker City; two step-daughters,

Jack D. Magee, 84, of 5149 Henderson Road, died Monday,
Feb. 5, 1996, at Saint Vincent Health Center.
He was born in Franklin June 17, 1911, son of the late
Duane and Edna Shaffstahl Magee.
Mr. Magee served during World War II and had been employed
at both Wayne Brewing and Erie Brewing companies in the bottling and master
brewer departments. Later, he was employed as a welder with the American
Sterilizer Co., retiring several years ago.
His hobbies included playing the organ.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Guy
Magee; and by two grandsons, Jack Magee and Jim Long.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Margaret Kinkade Magee;
a son,

Joanne "J.W." Warrick McAfee, 65, of Lewis Center
died Thursday, Dec. 5, 1996, at her home after a long illness.
She attended Urbana and Springfield high schools and
graduated from Mercy Central School of Nursing in Springfield in 1958. She worked at Springfield Mercy and Grady Memorial
hospitals, the Indian Health Service at the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South
Dakota and in 1993 retired from Heartland of Marysville after 12 years of
service.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church in Delaware
and a former member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Marysville. She was a founding member of Raymond EMS and
past president of the Union County Cancer Society.
She was born May 2, 1931, in Mutual. She was preceded in death by her father,
Robert Turner; a grandson, James L. Arnold; and two husbands, James Arnold, who
died in July 1979 and Verl Warrick who died Oct. 8, 1986.
She is survived by her mother, Martha Sceva Larason; her
husband, Connie McAfee, whom she married March 17, 1995; three sons, Robert
Dillon of Florida, William Dillon of Marysville and David Arnold of Marysville;
four daughters, Anne Murphy of Phoenix, Teiga Burden of South Vienna, Yvonne
Hayes of Springfield and Yvonne Wrenger of South Carolina; 17 grandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jeannie Price of New Orleans and Judith
Raines of Springfield; and an aunt, Mabel Hayden of Mutual.

late John and Susan Sloan Smith.
She was a home maker and a member of the Medina Church of

Shirley Mae Monroe, 60, Shelbyville, died Thursday at
Community Hospital East, Indianapolis.
Mrs. Monroe was born in Batesville on Oct. 31, 1935, the
daughter of Clarence and Mary (McColley) Jeffries. She married Donald W. Monroe on Oct. 31, 1953.
She was a resident of Shelby County most of her life. She was a homemaker and had worked as a
clerk at the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles for more than 30 years, retiring
in 1992.
Mrs. Monroe is survived by her husband, Shelbyville; three
daughters, Vicki Hicks, Debbie Barngrover and Kelly Chance, all of Shelbyville;
a son, Allen Monroe, Shelbyville; five sisters, Kate Willey, Boggstown, Betty
"Jody" Popplewell, Paula Gennicks and Mary Hicks, all of Shelbyville,
and Peggy Miller, Nicholasville, Ky.; two brothers, Carl "Dick"
Jeffries, Shelbyville; and Jack Jeffries, Morristown; seven grandchildren; and
one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at
Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Alan George Morris died May 17, 1996 in Ft. White, Fla.,
after suffering Agent Orange poisoning, incurred during Med. Evac. service in
Vietnam.
Mr. Morris was born January 10, 1949, in New Castle,
England, graduated in 1967 from Cuyahoga Falls High School, served honorably in
the U.S. Army in Vietnam and Germany, and earned a BA in English from Kent
State University, where he was co-founder of Vietnam Veterans Against the War
in 1971. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Vietnam, and
was an active member of Veterans For Peace in Gainesville, Fla., at the time of
his death at age 47.
Preceded in death by father, Harold Marshall of New Castle,
England, beloved grandmother, Enid Steen, and uncle, Anthony Steen, both of
Cuyahoga Falls; he is survived by his mother, Enid Morris of Ft. White, Fla.,
and many friends.
A memorial service will be Saturday, July 6, 1996, at 1
p.m. at Kent State University Student Center, Room 315, Kent, Ohio.

at his home in Falls Church, Virginia on December 8, 1996. He was born in
Barnesville on June 30, 1924, a son of the late Nelson and Mabel Morris. He was
retired from the United States Army.
Surviving are three sons;
William, Frederick and Ralph; two sisters, Naomi McCort of Barnesville and
Bonnie Harr of South Carolina. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

veteran of the Korean War.

Morris of Oklahoma City and Freeman Morris of Woodsfield; five sisters, Mrs

HELEN C. MORRIS, 81, of Sedona, Ariz., died March 5, 1996,
in Sun City, Ariz. She was an accountant and a former Colorado Springs
resident.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Blunt
Mortuary Chapel, 2229 W. Colorado Ave. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday
at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2030 W. Colorado Ave. Internment will be at
Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 S. Hancock Ave. Blunt Mortuary is handling
arrangements.
Mrs. Morris was born Jan. 4, 1915, in Loma, Neb., to Joseph
and Mary (Smahel) Styskal.
Mrs. Morris was married Nov. 13, 1937, in Colorado Springs
to Paul Harmon Morris. He died in 1993.
She is survived by three
sisters, Irene Aden of Sun City, Ruby Jackson of Casper, Wyo., and Angie
Trevethan of Kimball, Neb. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Marie
Shupe, Ruth Styskal and Wilma Shonka; and a brother, Joseph Styskal.

November 1,1996 in Barnesville Hospital. He was born in Barnesville on March
17, 1926, son of the late Nelson and Mabel M. Gooding Morris. He
retired from the U.S. Air Force and security guard. He was a member of VFW Post
9712 in Bethesda.
In addition to his parents he
was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack.M., James R., and Ralph V. Morris

Born August 8, 1912 in Georgesville to the late Elmer and Ota May
(Heflin) Myers. Retired from
Westinghouse and also Arizona Heart Institute while living in Ariz. He was the owner of Myers Building Service
in W. Jefferson and during WW II worked
for Curtis-Wright, Columbus. Felix was
an honorary member of the V.F.W. #7005 of W. Jefferson and Harrisburg V.F.W.

Hazel I. Norbury, 88, Springfield, died at 10 a.m. Saturday
in her home after a short illness.
She was born Sept. 1, 1907, in Decatur, Ill., to Jesse and
Ethel Schell. She was an area resident
most of her life and was a dietary service supervisor at Cox Medical Center
North. She attended the Baptist church.
She was a doll collector and a member of Heart of the Ozarks Doll Club
and Grandview Extension Club.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty A. Lewis, Springfield;
two sons and their wives, Jerry and Helen, Springfield, and Bradford and
Regina, Arnett, Okla.; five grandchildren, Preston Norbury, Erin Frerking, Eric
Wagnon, and Bradford Edwin and Elizabeth Norbury; and 11
great-grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Moxie E.; and an infant daughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Klingner Mortuary
with burial in Hazelwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday in the mortuary.

Ashland, died Tuesday evening at his residence following a long illness.
Born June 13, 1928, in Monroe County, he was the son of
John Adam and Anna Baker Parks.
Mr. Parks had been a resident of Ashland since 1951, moving
from Woodsfield.
He was employed in the maintenance department of the
U-Brand Corp., retiring in 1990. He was
a member of the U-Brand 50-Plus Club.
He was a member of the Church of Christ on Steele Avenue.
He was married July 3, 1954, to Shirley L. Brown, who
survives. Also surviving are one
daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Terry Barr of Columbus; three sons and
daughters-in-law, Jim and Connie Parks, Tim and Karen Parks and George and Beth
Parks, all of Ashland; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in
Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home with Travis Irwin, minister, officiating.

Edith Peddicord, 85, who died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 1996, at the Flowers Hospital
in Dothan, Ala., where she was taken after becoming ill at home in Sunny Hills,
Fla.
She was born in Newell Nov. 13, 1910, a daughter of the
late Elmer and Nellie Sinclair Goodballet.
She lived 45 years in Wellsville before moving to New
Waterford in 1991. She lived the winter months in Florida. She was Protestant.
Her husband, Perry D. Peddicord, whom she married in 1933,
died in 1973. A son, James W. Peddicord of Fremont, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs.
Frank (Janet) Willis of Wellsville; 12 grandchildren and 17
great-grandchildren.
Pastor Donald Stevenson of the Abundant Life Fellowship
Church in New Waterford will conduct the services at 10:30 a.m. at the
Martin-Altmeyer Funeral Home in East Liverpool. Burial will be in Spring Grove
Cemetery.

Floriene A. Pope, 82, Shelbyville, died Monday at her
residence.
Born on March 19, 1914, in Shelby County, she was the
daughter of Marion J. and Verlie May Hogan.
On Dec. 2, 1930,* she married Charles Russell Pope, who preceded her in
death on March 6, 1985.
She had been employed as a factory worker at Shelby
Manufacturing Co., later Elanjay Corp.
Survivors include a son, Charles D. Pope, Shelbyville;
three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters and six brothers.
Graveside services were this morning at Lewis Creek Baptist
Cemetery, with the Rev. A.W. Farnsworth officiating.
Memorial
contributions may be made to Shriners Children's Hospitals, in care of Murat
Shrine, Indianapolis.

daughter of Joe and Maud Calton Kinkade, was born in Wright County,
Missouri on December 22, 1907, and departed this October 24, 1996, in Lebanon,
Missouri.
On December 11,
1924, she was united in marriage with James Martin Porter, and to this union
seven children were born, two daughters, Gladys Dinwiddie and Sue Sherrer
preceded her in death.
She had attended the Conway Assembly of God Church for many
years.
Ethel is survived by two sons, John Porter of Conway and
Bill Porter of Princeton, Iowa; three daughters, Sadie Perryman of Conway, Mary
Petty of Lebanon, and Roselee Richardson of Lebanon; twenty three grandchildren
and thirty eight great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren, and a
host of friends.
Ethel enjoyed gardening sewing, cooking and most
importantly taking care of her family.
She is also preceded in death by her parents, and several
brothers and sisters.

died Wednesday at his residence.
Born Oct. 27, 1928, in Bolton, Miss., he was the son of
Dewitt and Willie Mae (Waldrip) Reynolds.
He was retired from the former Ralph Rogers and Co. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a
member of Laborers Local 741 and of the Southern Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Louetta (Harden) Reynolds;
three daughters, Edie Summitt, Susie Holler and Terri Etnier, all of Bloomington;
two sons, Jim "Bro' Reynolds and Billy Reynolds, both of Bloomington;
three sisters, Dorothy Ross of Denham Springs, La., Nell McMillan and Lela
Herald, both of Jackson, Miss.; two brothers, Cletis Reynolds of Watson, La.
and Bobby Reynolds of Denham; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Gene,
Mickey and Barry Reynolds.

1966.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, and an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed homemaking and
gardening.
Her husband died in 1991.
Survivors include two
daughters, Iona Buck of Milton-Freewater and JoEllen Thorn of Wedgefield, S.C.;
two sons, Jay Miller of Harlem and Milton Miller of The Dalles, Ore.; a stepdaughter,
Beth McGuire of Harlem; a brother, Edward Southwick of Helena; many
grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a
daughter, Colleen.

Wheatridge Park Care Center in Liberal, KS.
He was a farmer and rancher.
He was born June 29, 1915 near Haswell, Colorado, the son
of Lloyd L. and Jessie Burgett Schell.
He had lived in the Plains area since the age of 3.
He was a member of the Friends Church of Plains and had
served on the Meade County Fair Board, the Meade County Farm Bureau Board and
had been a committee-man for the Meade County Agriculture Stabilization and
Conservation Service.
On March 11, 1936, he married Leona E. Swafford at her
parents home near Liberal, KS. She
survives. Other survivors are - 3 sons
- Richard of Elberta, Alabama, Don of Beaver, Okla. and Dale of Plains,
KS. 3 sisters - Esther James of Plains,
Jessie Wallace of Agate, Colo. and Dorothy Foos of Grove, KS. There is 10 grandchildren, and 20 great
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Roy
and Lewis Dean,* 2 sisters, Lena Bond and Ruth Bonner and his daughter JoAnn on
8/1/92.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 24, at the
Plains Friends Church with Rev. Dan Biernacki presiding. Burial was in the Plains cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Southwest Hospice or the Plains

Mrs. Schuck was a homemaker and a lifelong Shelby County
resident.
She was a member of the former Winchester Church, Shelby
County.

Ramona Sue "Mona" Skinner, 38, died in Rockford,
Ill., on Jan. 9, 1996, after a long illness. Ramona is now at peace in heaven
with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was born on Feb. 23, 1957, in Newport, Wash., to Lynn
and Retha Kinkade Skinner. She attended the Priest River schools in Idaho, and
later received her G.E.D. in Rockford, Ill., where she had lived since 1988.
Ramona is survived by three children: Eric Bennett, 16,
and Anita Bennett, 13, and their father, Anthony Bennett, and grandmother, Ann
Bennett; and son Jamal Graves, 4, and his father, Gary Graves, all of Rockford.
Other survivors are her parents, Lynn and Retha Skinner of Oldtown, Idaho; five
sisters, Rose Marie Shannon of Weatherford, Tex., Susan Koch, Lynda Turner of
Ona, WV., Jeannie Hutchins of Newport, Wash.; two brothers, Michael Collins of
Priest River and Robert Skinner of Idaho Falls, Idaho.
She was preceded in death by her youngest brother, Ernie
Skinner, in 1973.
Mona leaves behind many friends in Rockford, where her
funeral was held on Jan. 12, 1996. An oak tree has been planted along the Rock
River in Rockford in her memory.
A memorial service will be held for her on June 15, 1996,
at 10 a.m. at the Cornerstone Church of God (formerly the Church of the
Nazarene) in Newport, Wash., with the Rev. Earl Browning officiating.

late George Johnson and Clara Belle Johnson Thomas. She spent most of her life in Marietta and was a 1946 Marietta
High School graduate. She was employed
as an artist for American Bisque Co. and later as a saleswoman for J.C. Penny
Co., Hart's Family Store and S.S.
Kresge Co.
She enjoyed gardening, sewing and making floral
arrangements and other crafts. She was
a former member of Lynch United Methodist Church and a charter member of Souls
Harbor Church.
She was a member of Marietta Chapter 59, Order of Eastern
Star; American Legion Post 64 Auxiliary; Women of the Moose; O'Neill Singers;
and Marietta Senior Citizens. She
participated in social activities of Ruskin Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 813;
DeSoto Lodge 201, Order of Eastern Star, in Florida; and Marietta Shrine Club,
where her husband is a member.
After her marriage to Willis C. Spaulding, she attended
Ruskin First Assembly of God in Florida, where her husband was a member and she
sang in the church choir.
She was married to Floyd C. Morris, who preceded her in
death in 1988. One son and three
daughters survive this marriage, Larry Morris and his wife, Sarah Jo, of
Devola, Jane Kapes and her husband, Robert, of Sarasota, Fla., and Linda Tucker
and her husband Stanley, and Pamela Slater and her husband, Kenny, both of
Bradenton, Fla.
On June 25, 1994, she married Willis C. Spaulding who
survives. Their winter home was in Sun
City Center, Fla. Also surviving are
eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Gladys Case of
Dolan, Ariz., Ruth Parker and Ruby Thomas, both of Alban, Pa., and Clara Mae
Antill of Woodsfield Road, Marietta; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Bruce Morris.
Services are at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at McClure-Schafer
Funeral Home in Marietta with Pastors Sam Greene and Joe Henry

SALEM -- Robert R. Steele, 74, of 838 S. Union Ave. died of
an apparent heart attack at 6:06 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Community Hospital.
Born July 16, 1921 in Hissinger,* Pa., he was the son of
John and Mary Anna (Myers) Steele.
Mr. Steele was employed as an assignee engineer and installer
for 35 years with Ohio Bell Telephone Company in Salem, retiring in 1983. He attended the First Presbyterian Church
and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 892 and Telephone Pioneers of
America. During World War II he served
in the Army in the European African Middle Eastern Campaign and received a
Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Survivors include his wife, the former Beverly E.
Utterback, whom he married Dec. 31, 1941; two sons, John H. Steele of Salem and
Robert D. Steele of Massillon; a brother, Dalton Steele of Jacksonville, Fla.;
three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walton and Jack;
and two sisters, Gladys Durnell and Catheryn Steele.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Stark Memorial
with the Rev. James Latham officiating. VFW military honors will be conducted
at Grandview Cemetery following the services.

LISBON -- Helen J. Stoffer, 42, of 39090 Elk Ave. died at 4
p.m. Tuesday at Cleveland Metro Hospital as result of injuries in an auto
accident on Jan. 31 near East Palestine.
She was born Aug. 17, 1953 in Salem, the daughter of
William D. and Margaret Milhoan Siddle.
She had been a lifelong resident of the area.
She was employed at the East Palestine China Company. She attended the Lisbon Baptist Temple.
Besides her parents of Salem, survivors include her
husband, Michael E. Stoffer, whom she married April 3, 1971; a daughter, Airman
1st Class Rebecca Stoffer of Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota; a son, Matthew
at home; two sisters, Cherry Siddle and Betty Hinkle, both of Salem; three
brothers, Larry and John, both of Salem, and Bob of Columbus.

March 28, 1996 at his home.
He was born April 22, 1946 in Yakima to Alfred &
Dorotha (Kinkade) Sumerlin. On August
10, 1992, he married Christine Lange in Coeur D'Alene, ID.
Gaylend was a member of the Selah Bible Baptist
Church. He enjoyed Indian beading, the
outdoors and horseback riding.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Sumerlin of Selah;
children, Shaun Sumerlin and Michael Lee Sumerlin both of Yakima, Rebecca and husband,
David Lentz of Seattle and Kayla Sumerlin of Selah; also two grandchildren;

67, a lifelong resident of
Springfield passed away suddenly Tuesday, January 30, 1996 at Middletown
Regional Hospital. He was born June 23, 1928 to the late Leon Talbert and Grace
(Collier) Borgwald in Sharonville, Ohio. Mr. Talbert was a dedicated and very
loving husband, father and grandfather. He was retired from Morgal Machine Tool
of Springfield. His hobbies included bowling, baseball and woodworking.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 1/2 years, Pauline
(Turner) Talbert; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald L. Jr. and Patricia
Talbert; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and William Whipp; four
granddaughters, Sheri and Bob Tingley, Dawn Johnson, Tammy Cordle, Lisa and John
Jones all of Springfield; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Leon Ray and
Mary Talbert of California; three aunts and one uncle; and several very special
nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.
Ronald was preceded in death by a very special
great-granddaughter, Ashley Jones.

Donald Dean Tolbert Sr., age 64, beloved husband, father,
grandfather and friend, passed away Friday, May 10, 1996 in Aultman Hospital.
Born in Canton, OH, on January 12, 1932, he was the son of
Pearle Gotschall Tolbert and the late George Lester Tolbert. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict,
having served in the U.S. Navy. He was
a retired employee of the Timken Co., retiring in 1991 after 30 years of
service. Don was an avid golfer and a
member of the Spring Valley Golf Course and a member of the Canton Eagles
Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Christman Tolbert of the
home; son, Donald Dean Tolbert Jr. of San Antonio, TX and a daughter, Deborah
Tolbert Buchikos of Panama City Beach, FL, both children from his first
marriage to Roxie Noland Tolbert; three stepchildren, Mike Young, Joe Young and
Dennis Young, all of Canton; his mother, Pearle Tolbert of Canton; and a
sister, Betty Laramie of Hudson, FL.; five grandchildren, Chris, Robert,
Michelle, Dawnette, Christopher and Melissa; and a great-grandchild, Timothy;

Don was preceded in death by his father, George Lester

Antique Club.
He was active in square dancing for many years and also was
an antique appraiser for many years.

Funeral Service, Reed and Jewell Chapel on 25th Street, with the Rev. Mark

James A. "Jim" Voland, 89, died Tuesday at
Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin.
He was a resident of Franklin.
He was born Aug. 15, 1906, in Brown County. His parents were Edward and Rhoda (Stinson)
Voland. He was married to Elizabeth "Betty"
(Glick) Voland. She survives. Other
survivors include two sisters, Doris Crouch and Edith Lain, both of
Columbus. He also was preceded in death
by a sister, Grace Wright.
He was a 1924 graduate of Nashville High School and a
graduate of Indiana Business College.
He was employed by the Johnson-Brown Circuit Court as court
reporter for 27 years, retiring in 1954.
He had served under Judges Freemont Miller, Charles Staff, Grant Rogers
and Oral Barnett. He later was employed
by Deer and Son Hardware in Franklin as bookkeeper.
He was a lifelong Mason and Past Master of the Nashville
Lodge. He also was a member of First
United Presbyterian Church in Franklin.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a talented woodmaker.
The Rev. Peter Jessen will conduct a
service at 10 a.m. Thursday at Vandivier-Tudor Funeral Home in Franklin. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and
from 9:30 a.m. to time of service Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Garland Brooks Cemetery in

traded in import merchandise.
Prior to that, he had spent most of his life in personal
research and design, occasionally in business ventures with his sons.
In the 1980s, he and sons Mark and Craig Walls formed
Frontier Motor Corp. to create a lightweight automobile that carried two
passengers and traveled 123 miles on a gallon of gas.
Before that, Mr. Walls promoted his Safe-T-Scape creation,
a cable and harness device designed to safely lower to the ground people
trapped in a high-rise building fire.
He had also initiated designs for a track dryer at the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway and lunar landing modules.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Greenwood.
He was born Dec. 7, 1927, in Kings Mountain, Ky. His parents were Claud and Virginia (Sims)
Walls. He married Joan Moore Dec. 30,
1950, in Indianapolis. She
survives. Other survivors include two
daughters, Sharon Wilkerson of Greenwood and Sheila Hall of Sanford, Fla.; two
sons, Mark Walls of New Whiteland and Craig Walls of Greenwood; a brother,
Clinton Walls of Greenwood; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was an aerospace engineer and inventor most of his
life. He also was owner and operator of
AmWall Corp, an import and trading company, in Indianapolis.

Donald "Jim" Webber, 59, of 638 Zutavern Church Rd.,
NW, Bolivar, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 1996, in the Columbia Mercy Medical Center
emergency room at Canton from a heart attack.
Born May 14, 1937, at Marblehead, O., he was a son of the
late Fred J. and Luella M. Miller Webber.
He was a 1955 graduate of Dover High School.
He retired in 1994 from the former Handy & Harman Co.
of Dover. He had also worked for the
former I-F Mfg., a Division of Rigid Tool Co., of New Philadelphia from 1958 to
the time of the company's closing.
He was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of St. Paul
Lutheran Church at Bolivar, patriotic instructor at Bolivar Army Navy Club, a
member of the VFW Club at Marblehead and Teamster Local 92 of Canton, and a
past member and officer of Bolivar Sportsman Club.
Surviving are his wife, Doris I. Paulus Webber, to whom he
was married the past 37 years; a daughter, Sheryl E. Webber of Mineral City;
two sons and a daughter-in-law, James J. and Leah Webber of Dover and Robert C.
Webber and his fiance, Debra M. Thompson, of New Philadelphia; a sister, Mrs.
Howard (Ruth L.) Stein of New Philadelphia; a brother and sister-in-law,
Richard L. and Diane Webber of Slidell, La.; a step-granddaughter, Jennifer;

YAKIMA -- Gerald L. "Jerry" Widdows, age 61, of
Sunnyside, died Thursday, August 15, 1996 at Providence Medical Center, Yakima,
WA.
Jerry Widdows was born September 2, 1934 at Oregon City,
Oregon to Abraham B. and Stefina (Martinjak) Widdows. He spent his early years and received his early education in
Oregon. He later moved with his parents
and family to Ephrata, WA, and later graduated from Moses Lake High
School. He then attended and graduated
from Washington State University, having received his B.S. Degree in Pharmacy.
He made his home in Colfax for 6 months, and in 1957,
entered the United States Army, serving at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, Denver,
Colorado, until he received his honorable discharge in 1959. Following his military service, he made his
home in Spokane for 2 years.
In 1962 he moved to Sunnyside where he was employed at
Walter's Pharmacy and Don's Clinic Pharmacy.
From 1965 until 1994 he and Frank Filicetti owned and operated Eastway
Pharmacy of Sunnyside. Since 1994 Jerry
has been employed at Payless Drug of Sunnyside.
On July 12, 1996, he married Yolle Trevino at St. Joseph
Catholic Church, Sunnyside. Jerry and
Yolle made their home in Sunnyside until the time of his death. Jerry was a member of St. Joseph Catholic
Church of Sunnyside, member of the Lower Valley Elks Lodge #2112; Lower Valley
Golf Club and Toppenish Eagles. He
enjoyed golf, dancing, hunting, fishing and the out of doors.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Yolle Widdows of Sunnyside,
WA; one daughter, Amy Lynn Widdows; and one son, Jeffrey Lawrence Widdows both
of Sunnyside, WA; one brother, Thomas F Widdows of Tigard, OR; one niece Joyce
E. Valot and one nephew, Thomas A. Widdows.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Abraham and
Stefina Widdows.
Funeral services will be held with a Rosary being recited
Sunday, August 18, at 7:00 P.M. at the Chapel of the Smith Funeral Home,
Sunnyside. A Mass of Christian Burial
will be celebrated Monday, August 19 at 11 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church,
Sunnyside. Burial will be in the Lower
Valley Memorial Gardens under the direction of the Smith Funeral Home,
Sunnyside. In lieu of flowers the
family suggest memorials be made to the Jerry Widdows Memorial Fund. Memorials may be left at the Smith Funeral
Home or at St. Joseph Catholic Church at the time of the service.

Vernon J. Williams, 38, of Billings, Mont., formerly of East Liverpool, died
Sunday, Oct. 20, 1996, at home.
He was born in East Liverpool Feb. 7, 1958, a son of Peggy Williams of East Liverpool and the
late Lewis A. Williams Sr.
He was employed at the MDU Utility Co. in Billings. He was a veteran of service with the U.S.
Marine Corps.
He is survived by his wife, Amy Kitt Williams, at home;
three daughters, Delilah Williams and Elizabeth Williams, at home, and Helen
Jackson of East Liverpool; three brothers, Lewis A. Williams Jr., Clint
Williams and Timothy Williams of East Liverpool; a sister, Mrs. John (Mary Lou)
Flowers of California; and a grandson.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family at
the Smith Funeral Home in Montana.

WOODSFIELD--Asa A. Wise Jr., 75, of Woodsfield died
Saturday (Dec. 28, 1996) at Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta.
He was born June 6, 1921, near Graysville, son of the
late Asa Sr. and Virginia Scott Wise. He was a disabled Army veteran of WW II
and had attended Jackson Ridge Church of Christ near Woodsfield.
He was preceded in
death by four brothers, Bill, Emery, Harold and Jim Wise; an infant brother; a
sister, Velma Holiday.
He leaves his wife Esther Kinsey Wise, whom he married
Sept. 6 1947; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Nancy Wise of Woodsfield, Terry and Edie Wise of West Union, WVA., and Gary Wise of
Woodsfield; three daughters and
son-in-laws, Saundra and Larry Francis of Newport, Wanda Dailey of North
Carolina and Patrica and Bruce Erb of Lower Salem; a sister Ida Coss of
Woodsfield; 15 grandchildren and five
great grandchildren; several nieces and
nephews.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 P.M. Tuesday at Watters
Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services will be 1 P.M. Wednesday with Harold
Kinney Jr. officiating.
Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, near
Graysville.

MARIETTA -- Viola Jackson Wise, 93, of Bartlett died at 3:30
p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 9, 1996) at Heartland of Marietta. She had been a resident of Heartland since 1993.
She was born April 17, 1902, in Lower Newport to William
and Nancy Ann Thomas Jackson. She lived
at Lower Newport until 1930, when she and her husband moved to Fairfield
Township. They came to Bartlett to make
their home in February 1982. She was a
homemaker. Her grandchildren were her
greatest enjoyment.
She is survived by one son, Daymon H. Wise of Vincent; one
daughter, Esther "Betty" Maddox and her husband, James, of Barlow;
five grandchildren, Pamela Rhoads of Pawtucket, R.I., Diana Randolph of
Vincent, Michael Maddox and Patricia Maddox Graham, both of Bartlett, and
Denver Wise of Columbus; six great-grandchildren, Vanessa and Gregory Rhoads,
both of Pawtucket, R.I., Amy and Tabatha Graham, both of Bartlett, and Tara and
Trista Wise, both of Fleming; and several nieces and nephews.
On July 29, 1922, she married Homer O. Wise. He preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1983. She was also preceded in death by an infant
daughter, Ada; one son, Herman Wise, in 1985; one brother, David Jackson; and
three sisters, Bertha Wise, Hattie McKee and Goldie Wise.
Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at McClure-Schafer Funeral
Home with the Rev. David Jackson officiating.
Burial is in Valley Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon on Thursday until the
time of services.

Alfreda LaRae "Freda" Withrow, 49, of Terre Haute
died at 4:20 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 1996 in her residence. She was born May 25, 1947, in Terre Haute to
Alfred Withrow and Dorothy Matlock Withrow.
Survivors include her mother of Terre Haute; one sister and
brother-in-law, Anya Fisher and Mike Fisher of Terre Haute; one brother and
sister-in-law, Alfred Withrow and Elizabeth Art-Withrow of Terre Haute; two
nieces, Melissa Troxel and Mysti Fisher; two nephews, Mykel Tad Withrow and
Matthew Fisher; one great-niece Elaina Troxel; two aunts, Phyllis Robinson of
West Terre Haute and Marilyn Silvers of Fort Wayne; and four uncles, Kenneth
Matlock of Oolitic, and Howard Matlock, Bobby Matlock and Gail Matlock, all of
Terre Haute. She was preceded in death
by her father Aug. 18, 1990. She was a
member of Lawton-Byrum Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 Ladies Auxiliary, and
bowled for Merchant's National Bank Handicapped League. Services are 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in The
Callahan Funeral Home. Burial is in
Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 2
to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Charles Junior Workman, 60, of 228 3rd St. SW, Strasburg, passed away Wednesday
in the home of a sister, Gladys Baker, with whom he resided, after a long
illness.
He was born May 9, 1935, at Bellaire, a son of the late
Charles H. and Bessie L. Leach Workman.
He was a retired area welder and had attended Canton Baptist Temple.
Surviving are three daughters and two sons, Nancy McCreery
of Canal Fulton, Cathy Holt and Paula Meyer of Navare, Scott Medure of
Massillon and Tim Workman of Canton; two brothers and four sisters, George
Workman of Bolivar, Paul Workman of Strasburg, Bessie McCoy of Canton, Esther
Kleyman of Bolivar and Gladys Baker and Clara Mae Kleyman of Strasburg; nine
grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. in
Lebold Funeral Home at Bolivar with Rev. Robert Piatt officiating. Burial will be in Fort Laurens Cemetery at
Bolivar. Calling hours are Friday from
7 to 9 in the funeral home.

Florence Marie Wright,
87, Sand Hill Road, Bellaire, died Saturday, March 23, 1996 at City Hospital,
Bellaire. She was born Aug. 6, 1908, in Woodsfield, a daughter of the late
William and Ella McMahon Ludwig.
She was a member of
the Church of Christ of Bellaire.
In addition to her
parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit Wright; four sisters,
Grace McFarland, Clara Bandi, Mary Martin, and Elsie Aleman.
Surviving are a
daughter, Mary Scott of Bellaire; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be
received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, at Bauknecht Funeral Home, Bellaire,
where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with John Hamilton officiating.
Burial follows in Goudy Cemetery, near Woodsfield.

ST. CLOUD, Fla. -- Edna L. (Wirth) Young, 67, of St. Cloud,
Fla., formerly of Wooster, died Wednesday, April 10, at St. Cloud Hospital.
Private services will be held at Sherwood Memorial Gardens
for immediate family.
She was born in 1928 in Wooster to Lester and Nola
(Metsker) Wirth and married Ward W. Young in 1947. He survives.
She was a 1946 graduate of Smithville High School and was
owner of the former Curlette Shoppe in Wooster, until she moved to Florida,
where she continued her work as a beautician.
Along with her husband, she was the owner/operator of a marina in Key
Largo, Fla. for 15 years.
Surviving in addition to her husband are four sisters, Mary
Johnson, Pauline Schaffter, and Mrs. Donald (Peggy) Bucher, all of Wooster and
Dorothy Naylor of Ashland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
One sister, Martha Eck, died previously.
