Now the laborer's task is
o'er,
Now the battle day is past;
Now upon the farther shore
Lands the voyager at last
Father, in thy gracious
keeping,
Leave we now thy servant sleeping.
"Earth to earth and dust
to dust,"
Calmly now the words we say,
Left behind, we wait in trust
For the resurrection day.
Father, in thy gracious
keeping,
Leave we now thy servant
sleeping.

Wadsworth woman
dies of crash
injuries
Deputies say
Copley motorist had
been drinking when
his car crashed
into van carrying
three women
BY STEPHANIE WARSMITH
Beacon Journal
staff writer
They had a designated driver, but that didn't protect three
Wadsworth women when they were hit Saturday night by a man who police say was
too drunk to drive.
One of the three women -- 26-year-old Crystal* Beckler --
died yesterday afternoon at Akron General Medical Center from injuries in the
Coventry Township crash. The woman who
was driving -- Denise Schnur -- was in serious condition last night at Akron
City Hospital.
The man police say was responsible -- Joshua Zeffer -- was
also in serious condition last night at Akron General. Zeffer, 22, of Copley Township, was
convicted of driving under the influence in 1966, according to court records.
"Here's a guy who shouldn't have been on the roadway,
and because of his impairment, there are three innocent victims," said Lt.
Bruce Robb of the Summit County Sheriff's Office.
Robb said he will talk to the Summit County Prosecutor's
Office today about what charges should be filed against Zeffer. He said he expects the charges to include
vehicular homicide, several counts of vehicular assault, and driving under the
influence.
Three other passengers in the two vehicles also went to the
hospitalized [sic]. Danielle
Lukacko, 22, of Wadsworth, who was riding in the minivan driven by Schnur, was
treated at Akron City Hospital. Two
passengers in the car driven by Zeffer -- Donald Fusselman, 23, of Coventry
Township, and Jeff Franjesvic, 23, of Franklin Township -- were both in good condition last night at
Akron General.
Schnur, Beckler and Lukacko were returning from a
bachelorette party about 10 p.m. Saturday.
Earlier in the evening they had chosen Schnur, 43, as the designated
driver. Schnur was driving on South
Main Street in Coventry Township just north of Turkeyfoot Lake Road when Zeffer
drove his car left of center and hit her head-on, Robb said.
The impact forced the minivan into a guardrail, trapping
the women.
Beckler suffered a head injury and ruptured spleen. Schnur also had a head injury and several
broken bones, Robb said.
Summit County deputies found evidence that Zeffer had been
drinking while driving. Deputies did
not take a breath test because Zeffer needed to be taken to the hospital. They have not yet received the results of a
blood-alcohol test made at the hospital, Robb said.
Deputies found that Schnur had not been drinking. In fact, they think she likely tried to get
out of Zeffer's way when she saw him driving left of center, but she did not
have the time or the space to avoid the collision, Robb said.
Rain may have contributed to the severity of the
crash, Robb said.
"Anytime after dark -- especially in bad weather --
any type of alcohol can be detrimental to the safety of operating a
vehicle," he said.
Funeral arrangements for Beckler are pending with the
Hilliard Cox Mullaney Funeral Home in Wadsworth.

In Memoriam
In
loving memory of
JUDITH D. REDMOND
He Only Takes the Best
God saw she was
getting tired and a cure was not to be.
So He put His arms around her and whispered, "Come with
me". With tear-filled eyes we
watched her suffer and fade away.
Although we loved her deeply, we could not make her stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard-working
hands put to rest. God broke our hearts
to prove to us the [sic] He only takes the best.
Loved, sadly missed by Your Family

Former teacher remembered for love of students
By RALPH TOMLINSON
DAILY JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
Betty Voland, 88, a former home economics teacher at
Franklin High School, died Tuesday evening at Todd-Aikens Health Center in
Franklin.
"Betty taught everybody, and their kids, and their
kids kids," said Jack Rogers, her attorney. "She said, 'I'm either going to raise kids or teach kids.'"
Voland, he said, dedicated her life to teaching.
A 1933 Purdue graduate, Voland began her teaching career in
Hope in 1934. She moved in 1938 to
Nashville, where she taught until 1943.
In 1943, she moved to Center Grove High School, where she
taught for a decade before moving to Franklin High School in 1953. She instructed Franklin students in home
economics from 1953 until 1983, eventually advancing to chairwoman of the home
economics department.
Mona Heck now occupies Voland's old post, but it is now the
Family and Consumer Sciences Department.
"I taught with her for 15 years," Heck said. "She started me out when I was fresh
from college. She took me under her
wing."
Voland was probably best known for her food classes, Heck
said. She was a wizard with yeast
rolls, but it was Voland's strawberry quick bread that Heck remembered most.
Others may recall Voland moving through the halls carrying
her class materials in a cardboard box, whistling as she moved from classroom
to classroom, Heck said.
Voland's influence extended beyond the high school. She was active in 4-H and came to know many
Franklin residents through her food production classes.
Voland taught students the job skills needed in the food
industry. Students spent half the day
in school and half the day working at local restaurants and fast-food places.
She would visit the kids on the job, Heck said, and
interact with their supervisors.
"Since she didn't have any kids, it was like everybody
in Franklin was her kids," Heck said.
"She has been given a lot of credit for keeping kids in school who
might have dropped out.
"She had very high standards, and she was very
strict."
William Breck, a former Franklin High School principal,
agreed.
"She expected a lot of kids," he said. "Maybe they didn't appreciate it then,
but they probably do now."
Dick Tudor of Vandivier-Tudor Funeral Home said he was once
a target of Voland's discipline.
He remembered Voland from his high school days at Center
Grove. Voland watched over a study hall
in which Tudor was a student.
Tudor said he could recall Voland's voice to this day,
saying, "Dick Tudor, sit down and shut up."
Voland not only disciplined and taught Tudor, but she also
instructed his stepmother at Hope.
Tudor's stepmother later taught with Voland at Center Grove.
"She was a dedicated teacher," Tudor said.
Breck said Voland was devoted to both the school and the
community.
"She was at the building probably seven days a
week," he said.
Many of her friends and former students remembered her as a
dynamic woman.
"She was always very pleasant, and very
cheerful," Breck said. "You
just couldn't keep up with her."
