Barnesville American Legion.
He

He was born June 28, 1923, the son of the
late Everett and Ida (Palmer) Ady.
He
served in the 303 Engineers Battalion in World War II and was in the

He
and his two brothers, Henry Ady and James Ady were owners and operators of the
A&L Drilling Company until the early 1980's. They were also talented
musicians who enjoyed entertaining county-wide at various community events
throughout the 1950-70's.
Surviving
are his wife of 62 years, Doris (Henthorn) Ady whom he married December 15,
1945; two children, Marcia (Ady) Haren of Woodsfield and Brian Ady of Powhatan;
two grandchildren, R.J. Haren of Woodsfield and Ginger (Haren) Yonak of
Miamisburg; one great-granddaughter, Hannah Madison Yonak; a sister, Eunice
Brown and a brother, Glenn Ady, both of Woodsfield; and many nieces and
nephews.
Preceding
him in death were three sisters, Stella Pittman, Amanda Ault, Bessie Pletcher;
and two brothers, Henry Ady and James Ady.

AMRHEIN, Mary Elizabeth (Eckhardt), 90, of Wheeling, W. Va.,
was called to the Lord Saturday, December 15, 2007, in Wheeling Hospital.
Mary was born September 23, 1917 in Wheeling, the daughter
of the late Elwood and Hilda (Nalley) Eckhardt.
She was a former telephone operator for C & P Telephone
Company; a member of St. John's Evangelical Prostestant Church; the Community
Education Organization; the O.P.A.L.S.
(Older People with Active Lifestyles;) the former Lydia Group at St. John's
Evangelical Protestant Church; the Bethlehem Happy Hilltoppers; and the
Marshall County Satellite Seniors.
In addition to her parents, Mary was
preceded in death by her husband, Edmund L. Amhein; and a son, Edmund Eckhardt
Amrhein.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara A. Sloan of Cincinnati, Ohio and
Lynn E. Blazina and her husband, Donald, of Williams Bay Wis.; a granddaughter
Michelle M. Blazina-Baker and her husband, Michael, of Huntley, Ill.; and two
great-grandchildren, Molly and Mitchell Baker.

MICHAEL M. - Of Goose Lake, passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2007, at the
age of 65. He will be remembered by his wife, Janet of 42 years; two daughters,
Paige Girard and Lisa (Nathan) Cohen; five grandchildren, Connor, Madalynn and
Evan Girard and Gavin and Avrey Cohen; one brother, Grant (Marilyn) Anderson;

years of service. He was an avid fisherman and a member of the Zouaves for
seven years. He enjoyed his vegetable garden and was a proud family man. He

“J.L.” Beasley of Reed, KY passed away February 17, 2007 at his
daughter’s home in Henderson, KY.
J.L. graduated from Spottsville High School in 1932 and
farmed in the Scuffletown River Bottoms from 1935 until his death. He served on
the Henderson County Board of Education for 16 years and was board chairman
when Henderson County High School was consolidated in 1954. He was a founding
board member in 1960 of Northwest Center (Henderson Community College). Past
President of the Henderson County Farm Bureau, Chairman of Henderson County
Riverport Authority, past President of the Henderson County Lions Club, member
of Stanley Masonic Lodge 878, a Kentucky Colonel and a member of Baskett
Christian Church.
J.L. was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Tackett
Beasley; his parents William A. and Susie Ann Beasley; one sister Cornelia
Hollis; one brother Ambrose Beasley; a
son Larry Jay Beasley; and two sons-in-law, James P. Fulton and Mark Roll
Williams. He is survived by three daughters, Cherie Fulton of Henderson, Sue
Williams of Baskett and Shannon Tolbert (Jerry) of Reed, a son Bill Beasley
(Charlene) of Paducah, and his companion of 16 years, Hazel Sellers, a sister,
Emma Cravens of Spottsville, three brothers, Emmett Beasley (Bessie Sue), Carl
Beasley, of Reed and James Beasley of Wakefield, Virginia. He is also survived
by 10 grandchildren; Teresa Porter (Gus) of Reed, Glynnis Rogero (Rick) of Fort
Myers, Florida, Michael Fulton (Susie) of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Morgan Fulton
(Terry) of Henderson, Susie Stovall (Chris) of Atlanta, Georgia, Sheryl Edge
(Jeremy) and Carmen Jagoe (Scott) both of Owensboro. He is also survived by 19

He was a farmer and member of Baskett Christian Church.

Everett Beckett age 86 of
Louisville, Ohio passed away at his home on Monday afternoon, September
24, 2007. Everett was born near Sardis, Ohio on May 14, 1921 to the late
Forrest and Olive Pittman Beckett.
He was united in marriage to Bess Beckett on July 21,
1951. They enjoyed 56 years of a very blissful and happy marriage. He leaves to

Everett served in the US Army
during World War II in the European Theater. He was a farmer, mail truck driver and
retired from Stewart Brothers Paint in Alliance.
Everett is a common, quiet man. His hobby was gardening and keeping a well manicured lawn. He spent many happy hours talking with his backyard neighbor, Micky Ryter, discussing their gardens and solving the world's problems.
He was a good father, grandfather
and provider. He was a Methodist by faith and attended the Peace United Methodist
Church in Louisville. He attended every Sunday health permitting.
He fought a courageous battle

time.

Long time educator, Ray L. Bessey, 94,
died Friday morning, January 19, 2007.
Mr.
Bessey was a teacher for 25 years, ending his career as
principal-superintendent at Tipton School District.
He now
goes to join his six brothers, “The Bessey Boys,” most of whom were teachers or
school principals in the area. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife of
50 years, Verna E. (Magill) Bessey.
He is
survived by his three children and their spouses: Harriet Bessey-Standel of
Porterville, Martha Hoff and her husband, Michael Samaritano of Sacramento and
James Paul Bessey and his wife, Kathleen Bessey of Naperville, IL. He was
grandpa to Amanda R. Gatewood, Sara E. Standel, J. Brian Bessey and wife Carrie
Bessey, and Julie D. Bessey. He was great-grandpa to Amanda Standel and Katie
Bessey. He is survived by his three sisters and their spouses, Elaine Frodsham
of Pasadena, Nadine Hardaway and husband Richard Hardaway of Springville and
Doreen Landers and her husband Richard Landers of Tulsa, Oklahoma. There are
many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews unto the third generation.
He was
dearly loved and will be missed by family and friends. Until we meet again.
Mr.
Bessey’s memorial service will take place on Saturday, January 27th, at 2:30
p.m. at the First United Methodist Church on Morton Ave.

Wilford Bishop, 91, lived on
W'port farm 58 years
Wilford "Bud" Bishop, 91, of Hartsville died at
12:25 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2007, at his residence. Funeral service was held
Wednesday at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Pastors Tammy and
Bill Leak officiating. Burial was at Findley [sic--Finley] Cemetery.
Mr. Bishop lived on a farm south of Westport for 58 years
and moved to Hartsville four months ago. He retired from Cummins Inc. in 1974
after 25 years of service. He spent his retirement years farming. He was a
member of Letts United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School
Superintendent for several years.
Born December 8, 1915, in Westport he was the son of
Charles and Gayle Bennett Bishop. He married Lillian K. Pope June 24, 1939, in
Greenfield. She survives.
He is also survived by a daughter, Sandra Spangler of
Hartsville; two sons, Tom Bishop of Glendale, Ariz., and Terry Bishop of North
Vernon; a sister, Lenora Bennington of Connersville; a brother, Charles
"Chuck" Bishop of Payson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; 13
great-grandchildren; and several half-brothers and half-sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James
Bishop; and two sisters, Mary Ewing and Martha Sallee.

away in Aultman Hospital on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 following an extended
illness. Born in Bolivar, Ohio on March 10, 1936 to the late Warren and Lucy
Boron, he spent most of his life as an owner/operator truck driver most
recently for Reliable Trucking, having worked in the industry for 37 years
until the time of his illness. He enjoyed going to races, working on trucks and

Gerald Lee Bucy, 67
COLUMBUS – Gerald Lee Bucy, 67, died Saturday, Dec. 8, in
Columbus. He was affectionately known as “Gill,” “Jerry, or “G” to his family
and close friends.
He was born May 17, 1940 in Pike County and he graduated
from Unioto High School in Chillicothe.
He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during
both the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis, as a Machinist Mate 2 aboard
the USS Cony, DD-508.
When he returned to Ohio, he married Nancy Ann Myers of
Georgesville on March 5, 1965 and together, they had four children and five
grandchildren.
Gerald retired from both Westinghouse and General Motors
(Fisher Body) located on the west side of Columbus. He was a member of both the
UAW and IBEW. He was never one to spend retirement sitting down, so he
continued to assist the staff of ELW Company which brought him much enjoyment.
His parents, Charles and Theda, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of 42 years; son, David
Michael Bucy and wife, Michelle of Pickerington; daughter, Laura Ann and Janine
Aquino Bucy of Worthington; son, Jason Kenneth Bucy of San Francisco; daughter,
Becky J. Crosby of Blacklick; and grandchildren, Charlotte and Abigail Bucy,
Olivia, Owen and Ashley Crosby.
Also surviving are four brothers and two sisters, Kenneth
Bucy and wife, Sarah of Orient, Dale Bucy and wife, Anne of Silver Springs,
Steven Bucy and Michael Bucy, both of Warren, Juanita Tate of Statesville, N.C.
and Janice K. Rosen of Warren; 13 nieces and nephews, living in both Ohio and
North Carolina; and special friends and family including, Dorothy and Donnie
(Lucy) Borders, Dick (Sharon) Rowe, Dave (Juanita) Pratt, Mike (Mary) Kelley,
Ron ( Marilyn) Schellhaus, and the entire staff of ELW Co. in Grove City.
Our dad was a truly wonderful individual who was well known
and loved by many in Georgesville, West Jefferson, Grove City and throughout
Columbus. Gerald never met a stranger. All who met and knew him were aware of
how special he was. He will be greatly missed by his wife, sons, daughters,
young grandchildren, and his many friends.

Rader McDonald Funeral Home, West Jefferson, with remarks by oldest son David

Akron, passed away December 8, 2007 at her residence.
She was born July 4, 1926 in
Woodsfield, Ohio to the late Urban and Eloise Crum and resided in Akron for
over 50 years. Arlene was a member of Emanuel United Church of Christ in Akron
and was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition
to her parents; she was preceded in death by her sister, Bernadine Burkhart.

Vernon H. Christman, 86, of Ashland, passed away Thursday,
Nov. 8, 2007 at Crystal Care Center of Ashland. On Oct. 6. 1921, in Woodsfield, Mr. Christman was born to Samuel
and Maggie (Goodbalet)* Christman.
He had been a resident of Ashland County most his
life. Mr. Christman was formerly
employed at Westinghouse before being in sales and co-owner at Harold Motors
Co. He was a member of Church of
Christ.
On Oct. 21, 1946, Mr. Christman married Velma Haas, who
survives. Also surviving are a daughter
and son-in-law, Denise and Bob Kapps of Columbus; a son and daughter-in-law,
Jerry L., and Sandi Christman of Reno, Nev.; four grandchildren; one brother,
Frank Christman of Woodsfield; and a sister, Edna Long of Batesville.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2007, at Heyl

Roxie Manning Cook,
daughter of Augustus M. and Annie Florence Cornett Duckworth, was born November
14, 1917, in Toledo, Missouri. She departed this life Tuesday, December 4,
2007, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 90 and 20 days.
On September 11, 1936, Roxie was united in marriage to Richard H. Cook and to
this union seven children were born.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband
Richard on January 5, 1968; a daughter, Caroline Cook; four sisters, Bonnie
Saunders, Lelia Snelson, Goldie Kolb, and Sylvia Whitaker; two brothers, Oakley
Duckworth, and Orvel Lee Duckworth; two sisters-in-law, Laura Potter and
Mildred Friend and her husband, Ray Friend; and a brother-in-law, Claudy Cook;
as well as her step-father, Audie Roller.
Roxie is survived by her children, Marie H'Doubler and her
husband, Francis, of Springfield, Missouri, Earnestine Russell, of Grove,
Oklahoma, Shirley Scroggins, of Sherman, Texas, Kenneth Cook and wife, Eunice,
of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Linda O'Shea, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Mary McHaffie, and

Roxie was born in Toledo, Missouri, and spent most of her
life in the Fordland area. She was a caring and loving mother who worked hard
to make a good home for her family. Early in life, Roxie had accepted Jesus
Christ as her Lord and Savior. She became a member of West Finley Baptist
Church in 1952, where she served as an Elder. She was a devoted Christian who
loved the Lord and her church, and read her Bible daily. She loved the farm
life and enjoyed the outdoors where she raised chickens and other livestock and
also kept a large garden, which she worked in almost everyday of her life. In
her spare time, she enjoyed doing handwork, making many beautiful quilts and
embroidered works. She loved spending time with her grandchildren whom she
loved dearly and considered them her most precious gifts. She especially
enjoyed teaching them the basics of life and how to survive during the hard
times. Roxie was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother,
great-great-grandmother, and aunt and was a caring neighbor and friend. We
celebrate her life and accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories
she has created for her family and many dear friends.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2007, in
the West Finley Baptist Church in Fordland, Missouri, with Reverend Melvin
Napier and Reverend Kelly Jones officiating, burial to follow in the West
Finley Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home

Ronald G. Cramer, age 96, of North
Canton, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2007, surrounded by his loving family
in Windsor Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Canton, OH,
on August 5, 1910, to the late Walter B. and Goldie E. (Schuster) Cramer. Ron
was a graduate of Canton McKinley High School, class of 1928. He was employed in the sheet metal
departments of Goodyear Aircraft and the Hoover Company during World War II. In
1946, Ron founded Cramers' Inc., a sheet metal fabrication shop, which, after
62 years became the leader in the Stark Co. area. He was a faithful member of
the First Christian Church. Ron was a proud member of Lathrop Masonic Lodge
#676, F & AM; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, 32nd degree, Valley of
Canton; North Canton Elks Lodge #2029, and the Eagles Lodge, Aeries #2370.
Ron was preceded in death by his first
wife, Evelyn Cramer (1986), to whom he was married for 52 years, two brothers,
Vern and Russell Cramer. Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Veronica
Cramer, of the home; a daughter and her husband, Penny and Don Dilling, and
their two children, Scott (Marcia) Dilling and Amy Moore; his two sons and
their wives, Lee and Janet Cramer, Larry and Arlis Cramer, and their two

Raymond L. Crisp, 84, of Shelbyville passed away Wednesday,
December 19, 2007, at Heritage House Convalescent Center.
Born December 23, 1922, in Waldron, he was the son of W.C.
and Opal (Pope) Crisp. He married Lillian O. McClain on December 4, 1948, and
she survives.
Other survivors include his daughter, Cheryl L. Crisp of
Shelbyville; son, David B. (wife, Beth) Crisp of Greenville, S.C.; and
granddaughters, Ashley Crisp, Amy Crisp and Rameisha Crisp.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clarence
Crisp; sister, Elsie Roberts; and granddaughter, Stacie Crisp.
Mr. Crisp had been employed with the U.S. Postal Service as
a mail carrier for the Shelbyville Post Office, retiring in 1984.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II and the
Korean Conflict.
Mr. Crisp had attended Waldron and Shelbyville high
schools.
He attended Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Freeman

BOARDMAN -- Mary Ellen Cronin, 70, of 64 Stanton Ave., died
Sunday afternoon at her residence.
Mary Ellen was born Jan. 13, 1937 in East Liverpool, a
daughter of Donald K. and Garland R. Hoy Cronin. She moved to the Boardman area as a teenager.
She was a 1954 graduate of Wilson High School and attended
the Youngstown College.
Mary Ellen was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in
Boardman, a former member of the American Business Women's Association, and the
Youngstown Symphony Orchestra. She was
a self-employed hairdresser, was the activity coordinator at Ron-Joy Nursing
Home, where she also was the hairdresser, was the customer viewpoint
coordinator for Donnell Ford and was a writer for the Senior News.
Mary Ellen is survived by a daughter, Becky Sharp of
Austintown; a son, Sean Patrick Dougherty of Boardman; a grandchild Casey
Sharp; a brother, Donald C. Cronin of North Carolina; and five nephews, Bob,
Dave, Rick, Steve and Kevin.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister,
Jane Marie Hamill.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at
the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland, Chapel, where services will be held

Betty Lee Umensetter Curfman departed this life in the arms
of her family at Arcadia Rehab Center Nov. 25, 2007.
She was born Feb. 24, 1925, in Parkersburg, to Dudley and
Evelyn Umensetter. She attended local schools and graduated from Parkersburg
High School class of 1943. She joined the Armed Services during World War II
and was stationed in New York City with the Navy as a WAVE.
She married John Aldridge in October 1946. They had Jinna
Lee and Dana John. During her lifetime, she was employed at Kaiser Aluminum,
Fenton Glass and retired from Veterans Memorial Hospital in Pomeroy. After
retirement, she devoted her time for five years as a teacher with the
S.T.A.R.S. program. "Miss Betty" helped many students at Pomeroy
Elementary learn to enjoy reading.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father;
brothers, David and Jack; and her second husband, Charles Curfman.
She leaves behind to mourn her daughter, Jinna Arnott
(Randy Smith); a son, Dana (Patty) Aldridge of Reedsville; stepsons, Norman,
Tim and Dwayne (Dink) Curfman; grandchildren, Kevin Clay (Rachel) Arnott, Erica

Betty was a charming and energetic person and fought her
battle with cancer with courage. Her 81st birthday was celebrated on the Island
of St. Martin with more than 85 attending the "Queen for a Day." In
her purple tiara, after losing her hair, she was the inspiration for a series
of paintings titled, "Angel Of Love" by Marie Therese Ancellin. They
are featured in a gallery in Manhattan.

CARLSBAD -- Joel Christine Reeher Davy, 55, died Saturday,
July 21, 2007, at home in Carlsbad after a valiant battle with lung cancer.
Born May 14, 1952, in Washington, D.C., to Elizabeth
(DeNoon) and David Reeher, she grew up in Baltimore, Md., and Springfield, Va.
She graduated from what is now North Texas State University in Denton, Texas.
She was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force in 1977.
Moving from active duty after five years, she later served with the Air
National Guard in Missouri, New York, Illinois and finally, the 163rd Air
Refueling Wing at March ARB Riverside California. She retired in 2002 as a
Lieutenant Colonel with 23 years of service. She and her family lived in
Carlsbad for 11 years.
She was a deacon in her church, a member of the hand bell
choir there, and an active congregant. She was an avid greeting card maker and
bead jewelry crafter. She enjoyed cooking and homemaking and giving to others.
Mrs. Davy is survived by her husband of 26 years, Kent R.
Davy, of Carlsbad; her son Jesse R. Davy of Carlsbad; stepdaughter and

OTTUMWA -- Frances M. DeBurn, 78, of 3601 Foxborough
Terrace, NE died at her home Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, after a courageous
battle with lymphoma.
Services will be 11 a.m., today at First Assembly of God Church
by the Rev's. Don McGarvey and Rick Gail. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial
Cemetery.
Friends may visit today after 10 a.m., at the church.
Frances is survived by two daughters, Gayle (Bill) Chew and
Sandy (Ken) Cummings both of Cedar Rapids; a son, Robert of Cedar Rapids; her
mother, Helen Reed of Ottumwa; eight grandchildren, Chris Chew, Nathan,
Natasha, and Ian DeBurn, and Thaddaeus, Courtney, Caleb, and Ethan Cummings;
and four great-grandchildren, Tyler and Fiona DeBurn, and Aliah and Cayden
Chew.
Her husband, Harold; father, Gail
Lowe; and stepfather, Kenny Reed preceded her in death.
Frances
was born Aug. 19, 1928 in Ottumwa, the daughter of Gail and Helen Hollingsworth
Lowe and graduated from Ottumwa High School. She was married to Harold C.
DeBurn on June 16, 1946 in Ottumwa. He died in 1985.
She owned and operated the
Bohemian Mutual Insurance Company for several years before her retirement in
1990. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church.
Frances loved her family and church. She enjoyed singing,
especially in the Passion play at First Assembly of God Church. She loved
attending her grandchildren's music, sports, and other activities.

Gerald "Pete" DeFrehn, 77, of Lincoln, Nebraska
and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, February 20, 2007, in Lincoln. He was
born July 24, 1929, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Gerald and Carrie Slycord DeFrehn.
He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1947. On October
17, 1948, he was united in marriage to Wanda Denney in Oskaloosa. He worked in
the grocery industry his entire career, as a traveling sales and serviceman for
Fleming Foods, he retired in 1994. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and the
outdoors.
His family includes his wife, Wanda DeFrehn of Lincoln; 2
daughters: Sharon Breaman of Lincoln, and Marcy Thornton of Grand Island,
Nebraska; 2 sons: Jerry De Frehn of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Tim DeFrehn of
Ceresco, Nebraska; 3 grandchildren: Jeremy Vogel, Nicholas Vogel, and

Medal with V Device for bravery in Vietnam and Cambodia. He married Marva Pinegar

Chuck died in his sleep unexpectedly yet peacefully early
Thursday morning, one day shy of his 65th Birthday. Preceded in death by
father, Floyd Dorow. Survived by daughter, Kelly (Patrick) Deignan; son,
Charles; daughter, Kimberly; sons, Chad & Chip. Also survived by loving
grandchildren, Foster Dorow, Kiara Brown and Penelope Dorow Deignan. He also
leaves behind his significant other, Linda White; mother, Olga Krekula; sister,
Jan Barthel; brother, Duane; sister, Janell Brever; ex-wife, Ellen Dorow; and
many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Chuck had a heart of gold, an encyclopedic knowledge of
music and a true zest for life. Chuck was a trap and skeet enthusiast as well
as an avid bowler. Chuck was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

David G. Dougherty, 73, of Rochester, passed away Sunday,
July 15, 2007, in Rochester Manor. Born Dec. 5, 1933, in Akron, Ohio, a son of
the late John P. and Mary Reese Dougherty, he was a retired postmaster with the
Rochester Post Office, where he had been employed since 1958 and served as
postmaster from 1982 to 1992. He was Protestant by faith. He was a U.S. Army
veteran of the Korean War, where he served as a cryptographic specialist. He
was a life member and commander of the Rochester American Legion Walter S. Roth
Post No. 498. He was secretary/treasurer for 15 years and was a member of the
Rochester Chamber of Commerce. He was a 1951 graduate of Rochester High School
and was honored with a scholarship in his name at Rochester High School in
2000. He served on the Rochester Police Commission. He was a member of the Rochester
Zoning Board and was a volunteer worker for the American Legion Bingo program
for 40 years.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years. Darlene B. (Barnes)
Dougherty; a son and daughter-in-law, Jamie D. and Lori Dougherty, Center
Township; a daughter, Erin A. Dougherty, Rochester; two beloved grandchildren,

away on Monday (Feb. 26, 2007) at Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born Oct. 20, 1925, in Belmont, Ohio, and was the
son of the late William Garfield Drake and Jennie Myrtle (Morris) Drake.
