CHARLES 'CHUCK' NOVAK: 1929-2009
Improved Safety
In The Nuclear, Petroleum Fields
Charles "Chuck" Novak, who played an
international role in improving safety standards within the nuclear and
petroleum fields, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, surrounded by family in his Oak Brook
home, his daughter said.
Mr. Novak, 80, was born in Chicago and served in the U.S.
Coast Guard during the Korean War.
He graduated from the University of Tulsa with a degree in
engineering, which led to a career in the petroleum and nuclear industries,
said his daughter, Carrie. Mr. Novak's first job was in Denver, but he moved
back to Chicago not long after.
In 1957, Mr. Novak married his wife, Norma, after pursuing
her for about a year. The two met at a Presbyterian church event in Green Lake,
Wis.
"He always knew what he wanted and got it," his
daughter said jokingly.
Professionally, Mr. Novak became known for his involvement
in building nuclear power plants and cable bridges, particularly in his efforts
in anti-rusting technology, said his son, Craig.
Mr. Novak also helped develop the diesel fuel calibration
fluid standard for measuring the thickness of diesel fuel.
Mr. Novak's career allowed him to travel to Europe, Asia
and South America, often accompanied by his wife. He also loved to travel for
leisure, his son said.
Once word of Mr. Novak's death was announced, the family received
letters from customers all over the world, his son said.
"He was a very principled man," he said of his
dad's integrity with his customers.
Mr. Novak was a member of the Society of Tribologists and
Lubrication Engineers, formerly known as the American Society of Lubrication
Engineers; the Association of Diesel Specialists and the Post-Tensioning
Institute.
Other interests included hiking, swimming in the ocean and
exploring nature, passions that inspired his children to be more adventurous.
Mr. Novak also is survived by his wife and two
grandchildren.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 8 in Christ Church
of Oak Brook.
