Cecil Willard Saffell, age 76, of Jerusalem, Ohio died Friday May 1, 2009 at Barnesville Hospital. He was born in Belmont County Ohio February 24, 1933 a son of the late Cecil Saffell and Mary McFarland Saffell.

He had worked at the Watts Car & Steel at Barnesville, former employee of Y & O Coal, and also had worked for Blaney Hardwood Bethesda.

Preceded in death by 2 sisters: Mary Louise Kostelia, and Marjorie Wehr.

He is survived by his wife: Joyce Bach Saffell of Jerusalem, 1 daughter: Mary Ann (David) Williams – Sardis, Ohio, 2 sons: Gary (Regina) Saffell – New Martinsville, WV, Charlie Saffell – Woodsfield, Ohio, 1 brother: Larry (Barb) Saffell – Bethesda, Ohio, 2 grandchildren: Nathan & Jason Williams, 1 uncle: Larry (Esta) Perkins – Bethesda, Ohio.

Salisbury, Cleo J. “Toots” Salisbury

Grisell Funeral Home, Sardis, Ohio, dated, May 17, 2009

Salisbury, Cleo J. “Toots”, age 75, of Woodsfield, Ohio, formerly of Sardis, Ohio died Saturday, May 16, 2009 in Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born May 19, 1933 in Paden City, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Bessie Williamson Salisbury.

She was a Protestant by faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers Leon, Edward, and Lester Salisbury; two sisters Betty Ritchie and Helen Ensinger.
Survivors include two brothers Lawrence “Jake” Salisbury of Fly, Ohio and Clarence (June) Salisbury of New Matamoras; two sisters Eileen Adams of Fly and Ruth Rush of New Martinsville; several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday from 11:00am until the time of service at 1:00pm at Grisell Funeral Home, 37234 Mound St., Sardis, with Rev. Frank Conley officiating. Interment in Sardis Cemetery, Sardis.

 

Schaber, Doris Schaber nee Merckle

Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, August 8, 2009

Doris (Merckle) Schaber, age 75, of Woodsfield, Ohio died Friday August 7, 2009 at Marietta Memorial Hospital Marietta, Ohio. She was born in Wheeling, West Virginia April 5, 1934 a daughter of the late Roy and Jessie Hissom Merckle.

She was a graduate Nurse from Ohio Valley General Hospital and was employed by Barnesville Hospital for many years as an Registered Nurse.

Doris is survived by her husband: John Schaber of Woodsfield, 2 sons: Matt D. and Kim January Schaber of Woodsfield, John Mark Schaber of Columbus, Ohio, 1 sister: June (Thomas) Lynsky – Wheeling, West Virginia, 3 grandchildren: Vanessa, Nathan, and Sarah, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

        Cahrol O. Schaffner, 90, died at 11:25 p.m. Oct. 13, 2009, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.

        Services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Mount Pleasant Church, Hoaglin Township, Van Wert County. Pastor Bill Barnett will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2873.

        Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory, Van Wert, and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Schaffner, Cahrol O. Schaffner

        Cahrol O. Schaffner, 90, of Grover Hill, died at 11:25 p.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2009, at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana in Fort Wayne, Ind.

        He was born September 16, 1919, in Latty Township, Paulding County, the son of the late Walter and Grace (Blythe) Schaffner. He married Wilma Ruth Schaffner, who preceded him in death on December 29, 2007.

        Survivors include a son, Cahrol Owen (fiancé Lori Brown) Schaffner of Grover Hill.

        A daughter, Rebecca Anne Schaffner; one brother, Doyt Schaffner; and two sisters, Olive Cole and Betty Collins, also preceded him in death.

        Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, October 19, at Mt. Pleasant Church in Van Wert County, with Pastor Bill Barnett officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Hoaglin Township, with graveside military rites performed by the Grover Hill Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

        The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. Sunday, October 18, at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home in Van Wert and an hour prior to services Monday at the church.

        Preferred memorials: Mt. Pleasant Church or the Grover Hill EMS Squad.

 

Schamp, Richard D. “Dick” Schamp

Schamp, Richard “Dick” D., 76, of James Street, New Martinsville, WV, died Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville.
He was born April 17, 1933 in New Martinsville, a son of the late Richard C. and Helen Marie Teitsworth Schamp.

He was a graduate of Fairmont State College; a former teacher in the Alliance, Ohio school system; a member of the NEA (National Education Association); a retired diesel mechanic with Chemical Leaman Tanklines; and a member of the New Martinsville United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John E. Schamp.

Survivors include his wife, Rosalyn Bonnell Schamp; two sons, Kent (Melissa) Schamp of Hurricane, WV and Christopher “Cotton” (Shelley) Schamp of Marietta, Ohio; a daughter, April (Lewis) Wilson of Woodsfield, Ohio; a brother, Dr. Billy C. Schamp of Waynesburg, PA; a sister, Nellis Bushnell of Orlando, FL; six grandchildren, Kendra, Devin, and Nicholas Schamp, Brandon and Kristen Schamp, and Jodi Rose; two great grandchildren, Breanna and Tyler; and several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9pm and also on Saturday from 11am until time of services at 1:00pm at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 Third Street, New Martinsville, with Pastor Everett Shreve officiating. Interment in Northview Cemetery, New Martinsville.

Schell, Norman Miles JACK Schell

        Norman  Miles "Jack" Schell, 85, of Xenia died at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center, Mt. Vernon. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Neal Funeral Home, Louisville. Burial with military rites will be at Oskaloosa Cemetery, rural Xenia. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Meacham Baptist Church. Mr. Schell was born May 6, 1924, in Wayne County, the son of Miles E. and Mary E. Schell. He married Bernice Alphin* in November 1969. She died March 11, 2005. An army World War II veteran, Mr. Schell retired as an oil driller for serveral oil field companies. He was a member of Meacham Baptist Church. He is survived by his sons, Jack Schell of Cape Coral, Fla., and Dennis (wife, Pam) Schell of Olive Branch, Miss.; daughters, Billye J. (husband, Jerry) Young of Flora and Linda K. (husband, Ronnie) Stinson of Clayton, Ind.; step-sons, Terry (wife, Marsha) Courson of Dieterich, Ronnie Courson of Louisville and Vernon Courson of Altus, Okla.; brother-in-law, Lloyd Clements of Johnsonville; sisters-in-law, Bea Allphine* of Alma, Hazel Garret of Washington and Oleta Kintz of Flora;17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Eddie and Virginia Lamb. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and five sisters.

Schneider, Paul E. Schneider

Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, June 30, 2009

Paul E. Schneider, Sr. age 83 of Woodsfield, Ohio died Monday June 29, 2009, at Wheeling Medical Park. He was born in Crafton, Pennsylvania May 23, 1926 a son of the late Lawrence & Hannah Gray Schneider, Sr.

He was an active member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church Woodsfield. Paul graduated grade school from St. Joseph Military Academy in Pittsburgh, and St. Francis Preparatory School in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania.

Paul served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp as a surgical Technician 1950 – 1952. Then, working as an Oil and Gas Field worker prior to employment at Olin and then at Consolidated Aluminum Corp. It was there Paul received the nick name “Jelly Bread”. Retiring at the end of 1991.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter Joan Rita, a son Mark Thomas, and also five siblings – a sister Mary Josephine Holleran, four brothers Francis, Lawrence, Raymond and Robert Schneider.

Surviving is his wife Joan Rita Kress Schneider of 55 years – married Oct. 17, 1953. Son Paul Schneider, Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughter Catherine T. (John) Bell; 1 granddaughter Julia Christine Bell of Canal Fulton, Ohio; brother Joseph L. of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. Also many nieces and nephews.

Friends received from (2-4) & (6-8) p.m. Thursday and from (9 – 10:30) a.m. Friday at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home 100 S. Paul St. Woodsfield, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday July 3, 2009 at St. Sylvester Catholic Church Woodsfield, Ohio with Rev. Fr. David Gaydosik Officiating. Interment in the Church Cemetery. Vigil Services 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

 

Schumacher, Roger E. Schumacher

       Roger E. Schumacher, age 78, of Woodsfield, Ohio died Tuesday December 1, 2009 at Wheeling Hospital. He was born in Woodsfield Thanksgiving Day November 26, 1931, a son of the late Herbert and Stella Bing Schumacher.

       He was a lifelong member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church of Woodsfield. He was a veteran of the Korean War, was retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation and was a producer of Oil and Gas wells.

       In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 1 brother: Elmer Schumacher and 1 sister: Rita Schumacher Singleton. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Yost Schumacher of Woodsfield, 3 sons: John (Patricia) Schumacher - Loveland, Ohio, Robert Schumacher - Plano, Texas, Roger J. Schumacher - Meridian, Idaho, 1 daughter: Elizabeth Beauford - Mesa, Arizona, 6 grandchildren: Courtney (Brian) Cherry - Chesterfield, Virginia, Maggie Schumacher - Portland, Oregon, Megan (Justin) Parcell - Cincinnati, Ohio, Brian Schumacher St. Louis, Missouri, Spencer & Remington Schumacher - Meridian, Idaho.

Preceded in death by a daughter: Deana K. Schwaben, her parents and 2 brothers.

She is survived by 1 son: Chuck (Kathy) Schwaben – Woodsfield, Ohio, 1 daughter: Barb (Michael) Moore – Beallsville, Ohio, 2 brothers: Paul Weissner – Germany, Norbert Weissner – Germany, Grandchildren: Megan and Carley Schwaben, Hali Moore, Sascha and C.J. Wise.

        SCHWEIZER, James L., 64, of Wheeling WV, died Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at home. Born in Martins Ferry Ohio, on May 1, 1945, Jim was the son of the late Louis and Audrey Sommer Schweizer. He was a employee of Wintersville Cut and was formerly employed at Reisbeck’s in Elm Grove. He was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wheeling and was a member of the Monday night bowling league at Rose Bowl Lanes. Jim was a 7 year veteran of the U.S. Navy.

        Surviving are his wife, Sharon “Sherry” Meyer Schweizer; one son, Michael J. Schweizer of Wheeling; and one sister, Brenda Schweizer of Wheeling.

        Friends will be received on Friday, November 20, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling WV, where services will be held on Saturday at 10 am with Pastor Debra Gable officiating.         SCOBEY, Maxine L. age 87, of Centerville, OH, died Sunday, February 15, 2009 at the St. Leonard Center. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil E. Scobey.

        She is survived by her daughters & son-in-law, Karen & Dominic Mastruserio of Cincinnati, and Janet Scobey of Centerville; grandchildren, Dominic Neal, Mary Katherine, Molly Marie and Martin Robert; eight great- grandchildren; brother & sister- in-law, Thomas & Jill Hoffman of Marblehead, MA; niece, Betsy (Eric) Hundahl of Marblehead, MA; and her beloved cat, Cali.       

        Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at the Meyer-Boehmer & Reis Funeral Home, 1733 Brown St., Dayton, with Pastor Dave Holmes officiating. Burial will follow at Miami Valley Memory Gardens. Family will receive friends Wednesday at the funeral home from 12 Noon until time of service.

Martha L. Earley Scott, 82, of 3661 Santiago Drive, Westerville, Ohio (formerly of Woodsfield, Ohio) died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at her home.

She was born in Woodsfield, Ohio on December 12, 1926 a daughter of the late Asher and Rose Yockey Earley.

Martha was a homemaker and a former school teacher in Woodsfield and Columbus, Ohio. She was also a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Westerville, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Lou Scott.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Franklin Scott; one son: John (Stephanie) Scott of Baltimore, Maryland; two daughters: Laura Scott of Westerville, Ohio and Ann (Joe) Adson of Independence, Kentucky; one brother: Ralph E. Earley of Wayne, Michigan; one grandson: Asher Adson.

Friends will be received at the Moreland Funeral Home, 55 East Schrock Rd., Westerville, Ohio from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009. Scott, Rosetta Scott nee Feltner

Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, March 19, 2009

Rosetta M. Scott, 60, of 502 Woodland Court, Woodsfield, Ohio died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at her home. She was born near Morgantown, West Virginia on November 18, 1948 a daughter of the late Clyde and Mildred McCormack Feltner.

She was a former Certified Nurses Aide for 15 years in the Alliance and Youngstown, Ohio areas. Rosetta was a mother to all that knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Tom Williamson; one sister, Joanne Smith and one brother, Donald Feltner.

Surviving are her husband, James W. Scott whom she married on March 17, 2002; one son: Donald Williamson of Parkersburg, West Virginia; one daughter: Annetta (Donnie) Egler of Alliance, Ohio; one step-daughter: Sarah (Michael) Timura of Randolph, Ohio; three brothers: John (Lucy) Feltner of Girard, Ohio, James (Linda) Feltner of Columbus, Ohio and Michael (Sandy) Feltner of Youngstown, Ohio; several grandchildren including Corey Garcia, Mariah and Mackensie Howley; several great grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, 37501 State Route 78 West, Woodsfield, Ohio from 1:00 p.m. until time of memorial services at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 26, 2009 with Glenn Bailey officiating. Interment will follow at the convenience of the family.

 

Searls, Dale R. Searls

        MANSFIELD – Dale R. Searls, 63, of Mansfield died at his residence unexpectedly Monday, July 6, 2009.

        He was born Dec. 16, 1945, in Mansfield to Archie R. and Vera Moler Searls.

        He was a resident of Mansfield and the Ashland area all his life.

        Before he retired, he was employed at Workman Construction. He enjoyed attending the races at Lakeville.

        He is survived by his five sons, Dale Jr., Richard, Mark, Brian and Matt; a daughter, Lisa; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his sister, Doris Shenberger of Ashland.

        In addition to his parents, two sisters, Evelyn Huntsman and Janice Brooks, preceded him in death.

        Graveside services will be at a later date to be announced at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Olivesburg.

        MANSFIELD -- Dale R. Searls, 63, of Mansfield died at his residence unexpectedly Monday, July 6, 2009.

        Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Olivesburg with Pastor Doug Magers officiating.

Seevers, David Seevers

        David Seevers, 73, of Beaver County, passed away Monday evening, August 10, 2009 in Friendship Ridge.

        Born July 7, 1936, he was a son of the late Ralph Willard and Dorothy (Downard) Seevers. He was widowed in 1999. A veteran of the Korean War, David proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corp from 1954 to 1962. A self-employed artist, he moved here from Florida and has lived in this area for the last ten years.

        He was the last of his immediate family.

        As per David's wishes, services were private.

 

Sewash, George E. Sewash

George E. Sewash, Jr., 70, of 36567 State Route 78, Lewisville, Ohio died Friday, March 6, 2009 at the Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. He was born at Morgantown, West Virginia on October 20, 1938 a son of the late George and Anna Marie Kudla Sewash.

George retired as the owner/operator of Monroe Manufacturing in Woodsfield, Ohio; was the former plant manager for L.G.A.M. Manufacturing in Woodsfield, Ohio and was a former plant manager for Morgan Shirt Company, Morgantown, West Virginia. He was a Catholic by faith and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. George was also an avid Mountaineer fan.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Louise Johnson Sewash whom he married on August 22, 1966; one son: Joe (Donna) Sewash of Raleigh, North Carolina; two daughters: Christina Sewash of the home and Jennifer (David) Sewash-Schetz of Westminster, Maryland; one sister: Mary Ann Murray of Morgantown, West Virginia; one granddaughter: Abigail Marie Schetz; several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, 37501 State Route 78 West, Woodsfield, Ohio from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, March 9, 2009.

Friends then received at the Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, West Virginia from 11:00 a.m. until time of services at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2009 with Fr. Leon Alexander officiating. Burial will follow in the East Oak Grove Cemetery, Morgantown, West Virginia.

       He retired from the Virginia Training Center Lynchburg, Virginia and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Woodsfield Christian Church.

       In addition to his mother Mary E. Bassett of Graysville, Ohio he is survived by 1 brother: Ross E. (Pam) Shannon - Newark, Ohio, 1 sister: Emma (Randy) Williams - Graysville, Ohio, Niece and nephews: Derek R. Shannon- Columbus, Ohio, Natalie K. (John) Fisher - Columbus, Ohio,Travis R. (Kate) Williams - North Canton, Ohio, Jacob Williams - Graysville, Ohio.

Shields, Carrell L., age 86 of RD#2, Proctor, WV died Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville, WV. She was born January 19, 1923 in Dilles Bottom, OH the daughter of the late, Clarence and Freda Palmer Baker.

She was retired from the former Consolidated Packaging, Warwood; a Methodist by Faith; and a charter member of Graysville Lion’s Chapter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Shields; three sisters; and two brothers.

Survivors include two sons, Robert (Rebecca) Shields, and Donald Shields, both of Proctor; a daughter, Lorelei (Joseph) Morris of New Martinsville; three grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; four sisters, two brothers; and several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 400 Jefferson Avenue, Moundsville where funeral services will be held on Sunday at 1pm with Rev. Patty Chambers officiating.

Shelton, William Hamilton Shelton

William  ‘Bud, ‘Bill’ Hamilton Shelton, age 87, passed away peacefully on Jan. 26, 2009 at New Martinsville Health Care Center after a brief illness.

He was born January 6, 1922 in Akron, the son of the late Roy and Gladys Nicholson Shelton.

He was a wonderful man and will be sadly missed by those who were lucky enough to have had him in their lives. He has joined his wife in Heaven and may that bring all some solace.

He grew up on North Hill in Akron, attended North High School before joining the Navy, where he served in WWII from 1940-1946.

He retired from Bellows Electric Signs in Akron, was a member of Teamsters Local 24, Sheet Metal Workers Union #33, the VFW-Ralph Huff Post in Cuyahoga Falls, and a Mason.

He loved his “adventures” with being a pilot and then a captain of his own boat.

Surviving are four sons Dennis (Tina) Ryan of Naples, Florida, William and David Shelton  both of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Philip Shelton of Akron, Ohio; two daughters Mylinda Ruesser Shelton of Sardis, Melanie (Neil) Shaffer of Marion, Ohio, two sisters Dorothy Learn and Delia Lewis, 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and extended family Carolyn Tippins (daughter).

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 50 years Vernice in 2001 at the age of 78, and a brother Phil Shelton.

Private services were held at the convience of the family. Donations may be made in his name to new Martinsville Health Care Center, 255 Russell Ave., New Martinsville, WV 26155.         Richard Earle Sherman (Dick), age 71, died peacefully at Winter Haven Hospital in Florida on December 2, 2009.

        Dick was born on August 13, 1938 in Chicago, IL, a son of the late Earle and Frances (Haual) Sherman.

        He is survived by ten children; Teri Sickels, Janesville, WI; Gary VanAuken, Deerfield, WI; Peggy (Reid) Hanzalik, Crestwood, KY; David (Deb) VanAuken, Antigo, WI; Sherri (Terry) Regenwether, Sheboygan; Traci (Tom) Holtan, Sheboygan; Kelly (fiancée, Bill Renz) Olson, DeForest, WI; Richard Sherman, Sheboygan; Courtney (Robert) McCollough, Lacrosse, WI; and Brittany Sherman, Lacrosse, WI. He is further survived by 19 grandchildren; Garrett, Glenn VanAuken; Heather Dowling; John, Adam Hanzalik; Emily Myers, Ben, Kurt VanAuken; Ryan, Andrew and Greg Rusch; Luke, Sara Hermann; Abbi, Mitch, Maggie and Jack Olson; Emma and Caden McCollough; five great-grandchildren, David, Ella and Natalie Dowling, Noel Aud and James Myers; as well as one sister, Nancy (Dennis) Bearns of Sheboygan Falls, WI.

        In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by a niece, Michelle Bearns.

        Dick was a retired semi-driver. He held several jobs throughout his life but was a natural salesman.

        He loved to spend time playing cards, shooting pool, and cheering for the Green Bay Packers. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing, and going to the car auction with Henry on Wednesdays.

        A Memorial Service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Saturday, December 26, 2009.

Glenna was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack McCarty and her second husband, Max Shockency; one daughter, Debra Shockency; two brothers, Russell and Jay Christian; one sister, Susie Longstreth; a grandson, John Glenn Young and a daughter-in-law, Laura McCarty.

Surviving are two daughters: Diane (Bruce) Burkholder of Elida, Ohio and Linda (Larry) Young of Woodsfield, Ohio; one son: Robert McCarty of Lewisville, Ohio; one brother: Clifford Christian of Ocala, Florida; one sister: Dorothy Mullins of Delaware, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

        SHINNSTON - Vernon Lee “Bud” Shugars, 70, of Shinnston, passed away Saturday January 24, 2009, at his residence following an extended illness.

        Vernon was born October 12, 1938, in Barbour County, West Virginia, a son of the late Ervin Shugars and Madelyn Willis Shugars Fitzwater.

        Vernon is survived by his wife, Charlotte V. Lathea [sic--LATTEA] Shugars, whom he married in June of 1976. Also surviving are one daughter, Kristie Borgheiinck and husband Andrew of Clarksburg; one son, Freddie Lee Shugars of Clarksburg; 3 grandchildren, Dustin, Zachery and Megan Borgheiinck; one brother, William “Neil” Fitzwater of Clarksburg; four sisters, Georgia “Poochie” Montgomery of Brownton, WV, Ruby Knight Powell of Rosemont, Pamela King of Clarksburg, and Patricia Fitzwater of Clarksburg; one half-brother, Gary Fitzwater; and several nieces and nephews.

        Vernon was preceded in death by his stepfather, Neil Fitzwater Jr.; and brothers, Thomas Shugars and Timothy Fitzwater.

        Vernon worked as a heavy equipment operator for the city of Clarksburg and was a veteran of the United States military.

        Family and friends may call at the Dorsey Funeral Home, Shinnston, from 10 a.m.-noon on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Funeral services will be conducted at noon January 28, 2009, with Pastor Tim Bess presiding. Interment will be at West Virginia National Cemetery.

She was born at Quaker City, Ohio on June 13, 1940 a daughter of the late Earl and Elva Stallings Bishop. Shirley was a former coalminer; assembly line worker and a former truck driver.

Surviving are one daughter: Beverly Shultz of Glen Rock, Pennsylvania; one son: Chris Sills of Lewisville, Ohio; two brothers: Jim Bishop of Zanesville, Ohio and Don Bishop of Cambridge, Ohio; one sister: Mary Truelsen of Newark, Ohio; three grandchildren; one great granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.

       In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Sills in 1969; two brothers, Wayne and Glenn Bishop.

        Roberta was a certified nurses aide and currently a social service aide at Mound View Health Care Center, Moundsville for the past 20 years, where she also serviced as union steward. She was a member of the UFCW Local #23; the AFL-CIO Marshall, Wetzel and Tyler Labor Council; a vice-president on the executive board of the United Food & Commercial Workers Union, Cannonsburg, PA and a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Moundsville.

        Survivors include her husband, of 9 years, S. Cole Simms; two sisters: Barbara George of Hickory, NC and Patty Burkholder of Wheeling; two nieces: Michelle (Dominic) Carhart of Warrentown, VA and Kerri Burkholder of Columbus, OH.

        The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 400 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville where funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00am with Rev. Beth Westphal officiating.

SIMS, Evelyn M., 83, of Shadyside, Ohio, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, in the Belmont Community Hospital in Bellaire, Ohio. She was born January 12, 1926, in Bellaire, Ohio, a daughter of the late Joseph A. Trigg and Florence Marie Snively Trigg.

Evelyn was a retired registered nurse at the Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire, Ohio. She was a member of the South Bellaire United Methodist Church, Bellaire.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence N. Sims; one brother, Robert Trigg; and one sister, Peggy Crozier Bednarczyk.

Surviving are her two sons, Rick (Donna) Sims and Mark Sims, all of Shadyside, Ohio; one sister, Joann (Delbert) LeMasters of Woodsfield, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jeremy (Shannon) Sims of Akron, Ohio, Amanda (Rich) Smathers of Albany, N.Y. and Shannon Sims of Akron, Ohio; three-great grandchildren, Maggie and Addie Sims and Severino Smathers.

He was born near Cadiz on October 11, 1946, a son of Emma May Skaggs Pestella.

Roger was a former employee of Trigg Construction and a member of the Belmont Ridge Christian Church, Beallsville.

He was preceded in death by his step father, James Pestella.

Surviving are his mother, Emma May Pestella of Bellaire; brothers, John Skaggs of Wheeling, Larry and Melvin Pestella both of Bellaire and David Pestella of Virginia Beach, Va.; sisters. Loretta Pestella Cuen of Las Vegas, Nev. and Susan Pestella Erb of Columbus, Ohio; an aunt, Barbara Craig of Bellaire; good friends, Henry and Fran Saunders of Centerville; nieces, nephews and cousins.

        Ruth A. Slates, 89, of Richville, passed away in her sleep Monday, June 8, 2009, at Altercare of Navarre. She was born November 17, 1919 in Bergholz, OH to the late Charles W. and Mollie (Mercer) Hackathorn. She graduated from Bergholz High School in 1938. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Ruth was an avid reader, she enjoyed crocheting, bowling and bingo. She worked for many years preparing food and refreshments for Richville Park Bingo. She was honored at a dinner with a plaque for 40 years of service on the Richville Park Board, having served as secretary for a few of those years. She had been a member of the Golden Charms at Richville United Church of Christ. She was a member of Bergholz United Church of Christ. In her younger years she was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for about 15 years, and had been a member of Richville Fire Department Women's Auxiliary.

        In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers, Charles W. II in 1918, Billy in 1928 and Chester in 1985.

        She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Donald C. Slates; two daughters, Barbara (Larry) Wilhelm and Sandra (Kenneth) Rohr all of Canton; two sons, Donald K. (Sara) Slates of Massillon and Randal (Sue) Slates of Richville; 9 grandchildren: Chad, Jamie and Nicole Rohr, Angela and Zach Slates, Tatum and Alexandra Slates, Samantha (Scott) Ayers and Julie (Ron) Schmucker; 3 great grandchildren: Sydney and Jaguer Rohr and Tristan Niehaus; two brothers, Harold “Jake” Hackathorn of Canton and Roy “Butch” Hackathorn of Carrollton; two sisters, Gerry Murphy of Canton and Joann Maloney of TN.

        Funeral service will be held 11 AM on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Karlo-Feucht Funeral Home, 5000 Everhard Road NW, Canton. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Burial Park.         Carol Kay Smith, age 61, of Greenfield, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at her residence following a brief illness. She was born July 14, 1948 in New Castle, the daughter of Forrest and Bertha (Rumple) Steward.

        Carol attended the Carthage Wesleyan Church. She was employed at the Greenfield Regency Place in laundry. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She raised two sets of families and was very supportive of her family. She also had a close relationship with her sisters and brothers.

        She is survived by children: Melissa Grant (fiance, Randy Swope), Jay Smith, Shelva (Tommy) Stephens, Christopher Smith all of Knightstown; siblings: Virginia Davis of Carthage, Marion (Dorothy) Steward of Carthage, Albert (Shirley) Steward of Greenfield, Alice (Charles) Baker of North Vernon, Violet Clay of Greenfield and Floyd (Sharon) Steward of Anderson; and grandchildren: Faith, Angilia and Sarah Stephens of Knightstown and Denise Smith of OH.

        In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael Smith; a sister, Evelyn Marie Steward; and a brother, Jack Steward.

Surviving are her husband, Harry L. Smith whom she married on September 17, 1949; three sons: Dennis R. (Stephanie) Smith of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Neal J. Smith of Woodsfield, Ohio and Don D. Jim" T. Smith, 87, of Wintersville, formerly of Beallsville, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009 in Valley Hospice Care, North, Steubenville, Ohio. 

He was owner and operator of the former "Smoke Stack" Bar in Steubenville, an Army veteran of WWII and a member of American Legion Post 768. 

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Phillips Smith, also by a sister. 

He is survived by good friends, Linda Porreca and John Fox.

Joanna was a homemaker; member of the Woodsfield First United Methodist Church, Woodsfield, Ohio where she was active in the Thrift Shop and was a member of the Homemakers Club.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Devol Smith in 1979; a daughter-in-law, Norma Jean Smith.

        Snell, Mariam E. (nee Ashenbremer), died in the early hours of August 8, 2009, at the home of her daughter following a brief illness. Mariam was born February 13, 1927 to William and Vida Ashenbremer. Mariam graduated from Wellston High School in 1945, and later married Billy F. Snell on January 6,* 1946. They were married for 42 years, and parted by her husband's death on August 19, 1988.

        Mariam is survived by her only daughter, Denise Pott, and two beloved granddaughters, Amy and Courtney Pott.        Services: Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 10 at 11am at the Church of St. Michael and St. George located at 6345 Wydown Blvd., Clayton, MO.

        She was born October 11, 1934 in Marshall County, WV the daughter of the late, Christopher and Sada Mercer Neely.
        In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Snyder; a brother, George Neely, and two nephews, John Metz and Joseph Baker.
        Survivors include a sister, Patricia (Joseph) Metz of Moundsville; a brother, Jay (Mildred) Neely of Ridgeley, WV; three nieces, Iris (Bobby) Baker of Moundsville, Kelly (Tim) Wright of Cameron, and Christy Neely of FL; and a nephew, Joseph (Fran) Metz of Moundsville.
        Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8pm at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 400 Jefferson Avenue, Moundsville where funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:30am with Wayne Cross officiating.  Interment in Rice Ridge Cemetery, Cameron, WV.

        Marie Wood Sprong, 95, of Shelbyville died Monday, July 6, 2009, at Ashford Place Health Campus.

        Born June 27, 1914, in Shelby County, she was the daughter of Earl C. and Mary E. (Richardson) Pope. She married Harrell Pete Wood, and he preceded her in death in 1957.

        Survivors include a daughter, Chree (husband, Charles) Kysar of Greenwood; sisters, Jeanne (husband, Joe) Bergman of Indianapolis, Paula Herod of Florida and Betsy Pope of Carmel; grandchildren, Dave, Doug and Rebecca Kysar; and several nieces and nephews.

        She also was preceded in death by her parents ; a son, Larry Pete Wood; and a brother, Earl E. Pope.

        Mrs. Sprong was a lifelong resident of Shelby County and attended Waldron High School.

        She had been employed at KCL, Cinch Manufacturing, the Garment Factory and Chase Furniture in Shelbyville. She also was a waitress at the American Legion. She joined her sister as a professional photographer at Paula's Studio in Indianapolis and later opened Sprong's Photography in Shelbyville. She also was a teacher/manager of the former House of James Beauty College in Shelbyville.

        Mrs. Sprong was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and life member of American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 70.

        She loved the small farm where she raised milk cows, turkeys and chickens and wore many hats throughout her life, all requiring long hours of hard work to support two children; yet she never complained and met each hardship with the strength and determination of a survivor, always managing to find the joy in life and sharing that happiness with all who met her. She will be remembered for her strength, generosity and warm loving heart.

        Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road.

        Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Father Leon Reuter officiating.

        Burial will be in Lewis Creek Cemetery in Shelby County.

        CHESTER - LORAIN STAGGERS, 84, of Chester died at 3:50 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, at East Liverpool City Hospital following a lengthy illness.

        Born July 29, 1924, in Newell, a daughter of the late Ben and Alma Cronin, she was a homemaker, a member of the First Christian Church and a lifetime area resident.

        In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 1994 by her husband, Carl Staggers, whom she married July 6, 1945.

        Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Little of Chester, and a son, Donald Staggers and his wife, Dee, of Weirton.

        There are four grandchildren, Melissa Alexander and her husband, William, Christina Staggers, Adam Staggers and Jonathan Dorsey.

        There are three great-grandchildren, Brooke and Austin Alexander and Kaleb Staggers.

        She also was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Barnes, and two brothers, Edward Cronin and Woody Cronin.

        The Rev. Katrina Lewis of Westminster Presbyterian Church is to conduct services at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Dawson Funeral Home, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

        Burial is to be in Locust Hill Cemetery.

STALEY, Karl P., 75 of Reader, WV, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2009 at his home.

        He was born on May 4, 1934 in New Martinsville, the son of the late Leslie Clarence and Vashti Pearl (Fluharty) Staley.

        He was a member of the Eight Mile Church of Christ. He was in the U.S. Army (Stationed in Korea). He was a retired welder from Ormet.

        Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Wanda Lancaster and Imogene Fetty; two brothers, Jeff and Richard Staley.

        Surviving are his wife, Ruth Etta Staley, a daughter, Anita Forrest and her husband Ken of Cullman, AL., a brother, Bob (Marge) Staley of Middlebourne, WV, three grandchildren, Drew, Kacy and Troy Forrest of Cullman, AL, and several nieces and nephews.

He was born June 29, 1921 in Calais, Ohio, a son of the late Otis and Mamie Carpenter Starr.

Ed was a kind, loving husband of 67 years, generous and caring to his friends and family alike.

He was retired from Quinn Coal Company. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, participating in the European Theatre for three years and was a lifetime member of the Barnesville Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twin sons Herbert and Hubert Starr, grandson Eric Wise, granddaughter Amy Starr, sisters Waunita Marshall, Emma Brownfield, and Una Smith and brothers Ural Starr, Gene Starr and Hubert Starr.

Surviving are his wife Georgianna Brownfield Starr, whom he married on January 29, 1942, two daughters; Judy (Jerald) Wise, of Cailis, Ohio, and Helen (J.K.) She was born October 8, 1922, in Stafford, Ohio, a daughter of the late Newton Steed and Ethel Mae McMahon Steed.

Martha was a member of the Stafford United Methodist Church and a home maker and she also delivered the Marietta Times for years in the Stafford area.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Steed.

Surviving are two sons, Lynn (Donna) Steed of Alabama and Larry (Callie) Steed of Barnesville, Ohio; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

    She was born near Rinard Mills, Ohio on June 11, 1938 a daughter of the late Clifford and Martha Jones Howell.

    Sylvia was a homemaker and retired from the Washington County Home, Marietta, Ohio after many years of service. She was also a member of the Merrill Ridge Church of Christ.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Steinhoff on July 31, 2002 and an infant son.

Stephens, Carl Lee, I “Curley”, age 74 of Big Grave Creek, Moundsville, WV took the journey to be with God on January 23, 2009 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, WV. He was born at home January 29, 1934 in Moundsville, to John Henry and Bertha Laura Taylor Stephens.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict; serving his country in the US Navy from December 2, 1951 to December 23, 1954; where he earned the Korean Medal, the United Nations Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal; a employee of Bayer Chemical Co. from which he retired on September 15, 1996; a member of American Legion Post #3, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 437, and Eagles Aerie 499, where he served as a trustee.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman; and was a horse trader in his spare time for many years. He was a true American Patriot and for 7 years sponsored POW-MIA Recognition Days on his farm; which the Vietnam Veterans nicknamed “LZ Cadillac Ranch”.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Henry Stephens, Jr.; and sisters, Barbara Ellen Stephens and Helen Nora Cook.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Rae Tyler Stephens with whom he was united in marriage to on March 2, 1956; six children, Beverly Ann Yost of Moundsville, Betty Lynn (Kevin) Parr of Beallsville, Ohio, Carl Lee Stephens, II of Moundsville, Belinda Rae (Mark) Carney of Moundsville, John Harold Stephens of Moundsville, and Bettina Joy (Thomas) Pickering of Benwood; two sisters, Mary Lou “Osie” Kelly of Marietta, Ohio, and Bertha Sue Riggs of Moundsville; nineteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date to be announced.

        Ethelda Stillinger, 91, of Coralville, formerly of Brooks, died on Sunday, Feb. 8 at the Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville, Iowa.

        Services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Brooks United Methodist Church. Pastor Lauri Greenlee officiated. Interment was in the Brooks Cemetery.

Ethelda then went to work for the Corning School hot lunch program from 1968-1985.

        Surviving Ethelda are her children Janet Squier of Carlisle, Jane and husband Richard Tauchen of Coralville, and Ronald Stillinger of Carson; seven grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.

        She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Clyde in 1967; two brothers John Stalder and one as an infant; and nephew Dennis Stalder.

        Elizabeth A. "Betty" Stoffer, age 81, of 272 Walnut St., Leetonia, passed away Monday evening at the Essex Nursing Center following a short illness.

        She was born Oct. 5, 1927, in East Liverpool, the daughter of the late Everett A. and Georgia T. Hasselman Runion. She retired from the Royal China Co. of both East Palestine and Sebring.

        Her husband, Earl L. Stoffer, preceded her in death on Sept. 17, 1997. They were married Dec. 16, 1945. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Franklin; a son, Ronald Stoffer; and a brother, Harry Runion.

        Betty is survived by a daughter, Sharon A. Parks of Washingtonville; three sons, Michael E. Stoffer of Leetonia, Vaughn E. "Rusty" Stoffer of Virginia and Mark D. Stoffer of Florida; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Runion of Sebring.

Ronald was a retired steelworker at Abe Sebulsky Steel, Inc. in St. Clairsville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Swallie; a son, Terry; two brothers and six sisters.

Ronald is survived by his companion, Sok Asbury; two sons, Donald of Cincinnati and Ray of Beallsville; two daughters, Robin Jones of St. Clairsville and Bonnie Allen of Bellaire; four brothers, Clausen, Jim, Don and Richard all of Barnesville; a sister Darlene nine grand children and seven great- grandchildren; as well as Nancy Asbury and Candy Stanley with whom he resided.

Visitation will be Saturday from 4 p.m. until the time of Ronald's funeral services at 6 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home. 920 National Rd., Brookside.

Interment will take place at a later date in Jerusalem, Ohio.

    Mary worked in various places as a cook; was a 1935 graduate of Woodsfield High School, Woodsfield, Ohio and was a Protestant by faith.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, John C. Warfield; her second husband, Thomas W. Swonger; two brothers, Luther L. and David D. Sulsberger; one sister, Esther E. Hossman.

        AUSTINTOWN – There will be a memorial service at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Austintown Community Church for Patricia A. Tarr, 67, who passed away at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

        Patricia was born Jan. 26, 1942 in West Virginia, a daughter of the late Dorsey and Linda (Wilson) Strosnider.

        She had worked at Gray Drugs, and was a member of the Four Mile Run Christian Church. She was an avid bingo player, loved going to casinos and was a die hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Patricia enjoyed conducting candle parties, and loved her grandchildren dearly and enjoyed going to their activities.

        Her husband, Gerald Tarr, whom she married Oct. 1, 1959, passed away June 27, 1991.

        She is survived by two children, Jerry (Karen) Tarr of Austintown and Cindy (Tom) Opatken of Austintown; stepdaughter, Geri Lee Neese of Youngstown; nine grandchildren, Kristine, Larry, Tommy, Heather, Blaine, Summer, Lynsey, Kendall, and Haley; a great-grandson, Landon; and many nieces and nephews.

        Besides her parents and husband, Patricia was preceded in death by a stepson, Larry Tarr; a sister, Mary McKinstry; and two brothers, Earl and Walter.

Taylor, H. Dwight “Ozzie”, 87 of Reservoir Hill Rd., Flushing, Ohio died Thursday, April 2, 2009 at East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry.He was born in Wheeling Township on February 21, 1922 a son of the late Harold and Emma Eisanboth Taylor.

Dwight was a retired employee of Consol Energy, a member of the United Mine Workers, American Legion Post 366 at Flushing, and was an army veteran of World War II.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys Williams Taylor; brothers, William “Bill” Taylor and Jim Taylor; a sister, Ila Simmons and a step grandson, Chris Skelton.

He is survived by his wife Eula Skelton Taylor; a son Charles “Lynn” Taylor and his wife Linda of Flushing; step sons, David Skelton of Neffs and Don Skelton and his wife Becky of Sardis; a step daughter; Patty Kocher and her husband Dan of Jacobsburg; brothers, Chuck and Cecil Taylor both of California; sister, Betty Levengood of California; 2 grandchildren, 4 step grandsons, 3 great grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville on Sunday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. where services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dean Lancaster officiating.  Burial will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove where American Legion Post 366 will conduct military honors at the grave site.

        Emma Corrine Thomas, 96, of Versailles, passed away early Wednesday morning, Jan. 28, 2009, at the Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Mount Sterling.

        She was born Oct. 16, 1912, in Versailles, the daughter of Russell and Mary Sandidge Keylor. She married Everette Thomas on Dec. 20, 1932, in Mount Sterling, and he survives.

        Mrs. Thomas was a homemaker. She attended Washington Grade School and graduated from Hersman High School. Mrs.  Thomas was a member of a non-denominational religion.

        Survivors include her husband, Everette Thomas of Versailles; four children, Eugene Thomas of Perry, Lyle Thomas of Meridianville, Ala., Lozelle Thomas of Alabaster, Ala., and Irene Plunkett of Derby, Kan. One brother, Clyde Keylor of Mount Sterling; one sister, Grace Martin of Lancaster, Calif.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive, along with 14 nieces and nephews.

        She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ora Kauder and Dorothy Keylor; and three brothers, Rollie, Ralph and Wayne Keylor.

        Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Hendricker Funeral Home in Mount Sterling. Burial will be at Hersman Cemetery, south of Mount Sterling. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Friends may also call from 8 a.m. until time of services on Saturday.

 Virgil Tisher, age 79 of Lewisville, Ohio passed away peacefully at OSU-Ross Heart Hospital, Columbus, Ohio January 22, 2009. Virgil was born October 7, 1929, a son of the late Freda and Wesley Tisher, of Hannibal, Ohio, and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Vernon Tisher.

Surviving are his wife Mary Lou (Gramlich) Tisher, whom he married on October 7, 1950 on his 21st.birthday. Children and family include Yvonne Amrine, Allison, Dustin, and Adrian Amrine, all of Cincinnati, Barbara and Casey Duffy, Sarah and Christopher Duffy, all of Danville, Kentucky, Brent and Kimberly Tisher, Cameron Tisher, of Lewisville, Ramsey and Amy Tisher, of Massillon, Pamela and Don Longwell, Matt and Brian Longwell and two great-grandchildren, all of Woodsfield.

 He worked for the River Gas Company in Woodsfield and owned Tisher Trees, a Christmas Tree Farm on Lewisville Road, then became a welder and later worked at Conalco, from where he retired in1991. In his retirement he operated the Woodsfield Carry-Out, and later started Monroe County Antiques, in the former Monroe Theater Building. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ Woodsfield, Monroe Lodge #189, a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge # 2247, and loyal Shriner.

Virgil was also an army veteran of the Korean War and a VFW member. He enjoyed bowling at Monroe Lanes, playing euchre at the Moose, pitching horseshoes and collecting old tools.

 She was born in Jacksonburg, West Virginia June 14, 1928 a daughter of the late Edward Alonzo Wilson and Virchie Elizabeth Jackson Wilson.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Woodsfield and later attended the Richfork Church of Christ. She worked as a manager of the Goose Pond Country Club Scottsboro, Alabama, and had worked in the cafeteria at Ormet Corp.

She was a member of Eastern Star and a former member of the Switzerland of Ohio Country Club.

Preceded in death by her first husband: Charles Lipscomb – 1959 and her second husband Clanton (Tommy) Tomlin – 2008. 2 grandsons: Michael D. Kastrevec, and Luke Lee Arnett, 1 granddaughter: Liliana Oprea Arnett, 3 brothers: Delbert, Elmer, and Virgil Wilson, 2 sisters: Leona and Lucy Wilson.

She is survived by: 3 sons: Charles (Mary Ann) Tomlin – Woodsfield, Ohio, Jerry W. Tomlin – Haines, Florida, Clanton W. She was a retired Village of Clarington Clerk and Water Clerk; a member of the Clarington United Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star #533, Clarington.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ramon D. Trembly; three sisters, Hazel May, Alma Poliuka, and Wilma Oneacre; and a brother, Russell Oneacre.

Survivors include a son, Dale R. (Karen) Trembly; a daughter, Judith A.        Daniel L. Truax, 64, of Battle Creek, Michigan died Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Laurels of Galesburg. He died from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in the Dominican Republic while on a missionary trip for Children's International in May 2006. He was born on February 2, 1945 in Massillon, Ohio son of the late Harry and Alice (Cline) Truax. Dan graduated in 1963 from Woodsfield High School, Woodsfield, Ohio. He was employed by Ormet Inc. of Hannibal, Ohio for 21 years retiring in 1986. He then worked for Thorns Contracting of Bellaire, Ohio as a contracting supervisor for the construction of Lowe's Home Improvement Stores. He married Susan J. (Taylor) Orns on June 16, 1995 in Battle Creek. Dan was a charter member of the Moose Lodge and the EMS both in Woodsfield, Ohio. He was an artist and enjoyed working with wood, including woodcarving.

       Daniel is survived by his wife, Susan, of Battle Creek, children, Robin L. (Blaine) Duncan, of Washington Court House OH; Daniel L. Truax Jr., of Seattle WA; and Leah R. (Jeffrey) Ontko, of Marietta, OH; step-daughters, Julie M. (Kurt) Haider, and Kristy S. Orns, both of Ceresco, MI; a brother, Richard (Nancy) Truax, of Woodsfield, OH; a sister, Shelva Briggs of Woodsfield, OH, and 8 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Charles Briggs.

       Dan had a very special hospice nurse, Jan Gramlich, who took wonderful care of him and made his last year and a half much more comfortable. The last year of care was given on her own time. She was there for Dan and his family, answering her phone, and helping out day and night.

    Ray E. Truex, 87, of Ronceverte, West Virginia, formerly of Monroe County, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009 in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Ronceverte.  He was born January 17, 1922 near Beallsville, a son of the late John and Celestie Pittman Truex. 

     He was a retired natural gas turbine operator, a member of the Church of Christ, and a US Air Force veteran of WWII.  Ray loved farming and his little Pomeranians, Sheba, Polly, and Joy. 

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dessie Powell and two brothers, Glenn and Russell Truex. 

    Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Edna Henthorn Truex; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Janet Truex of Ronceverte and a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Vernon Adams of Sod, West Virginia; two brothers, Leland Truex of Florida and William (Helen) Truex of Michigan; a sister, Viola Varner of Marietta; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Wanda Truex, 85, of the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehab Center, formerly of Mellott Ridge, Beallsville, died Tuesday, July 14th, 2009 in the Center. 

She was born April 20, 1924 in Belmont County, a daughter of the late Roy and Leah Pugh Moore. 

Wanda was a member of the Mellott Ridge Church of Christ and the New Castle Homemakers. 

 In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, her brother, Chester Moore, an infant brother, Chelsey, and her son-in-law, Casey Stewart. 

Surviving are her children, Marilyn (Bill) Miller of South Amherst, Ohio, Cliff (Judy) Truex, Charlotte (Robert) Mobley, Loretta (Jeff) Gallaher, and Lawrence (Susie) Truex, all of Beallsville; 11 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren, with one more due in the fall.  

Visitation will be Friday, July 17th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville where funeral services will be held Saturday, July 18th at 11 AM with Jeff Rich officiating.  Interment will follow in Beallsville Cemetery.

 

Utterback, Robert Larry Utterback

        SALEM -- Robert Larry Utterback, 79, of Salem, died at 3:55 Thursday at Salem Community Hospital.

        He was born on April 13, 1930 in Rimmerburg, [sic–Rimersburg] Pa., the son of the late William Harvey and Irene Mae (Pratt) Utterback.

        He retired in 1992 from Safety Services Inc. in Sandusky where he was an inspector for 27 years.  He was currently working as a driver for Donnell Ford (fka Loudon Ford) in Salem since 1994.

        He served in the U.S. Air Force as a sergeant during the Korean War.

        He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Vincent whom he married on Feb. 15, 1958.

        He is also survived by three daughters, Kathy Ann (David E.) Byers of Salem, Brenda Sue (Terry) McClish of Leetonia and Peggy Marie Steer of Cincinnati; a son, W. Vince (Susan) Utterback of Pickerington; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

        There will be a private family calling hours at the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen Funeral Home and funeral service held on Saturday with the Rev. Richard Brendlinger officiating.  The Tri-State Burial Group will provide the military honors at Grandview Cemetery on Saturday.

VANFOSSEN, Donald R., 80 of Barnesville, Ohio, died Thursday, February 12, 2009, in OVMC, Wheeling, W.Va.He was born July 19, 1928 in Flushing, Ohio, a son of the late Anson and Sarah VanFossen.

Donald was retired from the Operating Engineers after 33 years of service; a veteran serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War; a life member of the Barnesville Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans and the Barnesville American Legion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Burdette VanFossen; sisters, Elsie and Lucille, and brothers, Raymond, Fred, Russell and Earl.

Surviving are his wife, Irene Pierce VanFossen; a daughter Redona (Richard) Truax; sons, Tim (Patricia) VanFossen and Mike (Tammy) VanFossen; step daughters Peggy (Keith) McMillan, Barbara (Chris) Ditto all of Barnesville; grandchildren Shawn, Casey and Carly, and several step-grandchildren.

She was born in Niles, Ohio on April 17, 1958 a daughter of John and Joan Day Roe of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Myron an Marilyn Vanwy of Ft. Myers, Florida. She was a 1976 graduate of Woodsfield High School, Woodsfield, Ohio; a retired employee of the Conalco Corporation, Hannibal, Ohio with 28 years of service; was the owner/operator of Ms. Daisies Shoppe in Clarington, Ohio and was a Methodist by faith.

    Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Michael “Bull” Marling of the home; one son: Ryan Vanwy of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; one sister: Penny (Cecil) Crum of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

        NASHVILLE - David Voland, 59, of Brown County, died at the Brown County Health and Living Community in Nashville April 22.

        He was a Marine Corps veteran.  Voland was a trader and collector of knives and guns.

        Survivors include his mother, Mary I. Voland of Brown County; sisters Janet Read of Beaver Dam, Ky. and Joyce Baushke of Brown County and brother Scott Voland of Brown County.

        A celebration of life service will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. May 30 at his mother's home, 8406 Lick Creek Road in Morgantown.

        Bill was born in Marion, Ind. to Walter and Margaret Voland. He attended school in Jonesboro, Ind. before joining the U.S. Air Force in June of 1952 at the age of 18. Bill retired in June of 1972 with the rank of Sergeant. He served in Vietnam and Korea as well as bases in Michigan, Wyoming, Davis Monthan in Tucson and Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix.

        Upon retiring from the Air Force, he worked for many years at Joske’s Department store in Phoenix. After moving to Green Valley in 1993, he worked for his nephew, Tim Trosper of Green Valley Plumbing.

        Bill was preceded in death by his father and mother; brother Tom; and sister Veldah Trosper.

        He is survived by Evelyn, his wife of 36 years; four daughters Kim Gugliotta (Tim), Robin Ulmer, Toni Ryan (Bill) and Billie Byers; stepdaughter Lori Pusztai (Jim); eight grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter; two sisters Nancy Bessett (Cosmo Saenz) and Joyce Epling; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

        He was a member of The Optimist Club, the Green Valley Elks #2592, American Legion Post #66, and the American Military Society.

        Bill owned a stock car and raced wherever he was stationed, winning many times. His passion up to his death was watching auto racing on TV.

        He was an avid bowler for many years, and played a mean shuffleboard game with the Villages. Another passion was playing cards. He was a card shark. Whenever he sat in on a game, he won.

        Bill was a master at repairs. He could weld, paint, plumb, build bridges, and fix anything that was broken. We will miss him.

        Memorial services will be at Green Valley Mortuary, 18751 S. La Canada, Green Valley on Friday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m.

Wade, Harold Lewis, 77, of State Route 7, Sardis, Ohio, died Monday, July 6, 2009 at home.

He was born October 18, 1931 in Wetzel County, WV, the son of the late Clark and Nora Wright Wade.

He was a self-employed furniture refinisher; a member of Sardis United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 760 in Hannibal, Ohio; and a U.S. Army veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Wade; two brothers, Delbert and Donald Wade; and a sister, Carol Wade.
Survivors include two sons, Douglas (Diane) Wade of New Martinsville, WV and David Wade of McMechen, WV; two brothers, Jerry and Duane Wade, both of New Martinsville; three sisters, Margie Ward and Shirley “Jean” Wells, also of New Martinsville, and Arlene Hamilton of Toronto, Ohio; 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. There will be no services at Harold’s request.

"Bob" Wain, 88, of the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehab Center formerly of Beallsville, died Sunday, April 5, 2009 at the Center. He was born April 14, 1920 in East Liverpool, Ohio, a son of the late Percy and Bessie Mellott Wain.

He was a retired foreman at Ormet Corporation, Hannibal, Ohio, a member of the Beallsville United Methodist Church, a US Navy veteran of WWII, a member of Sunsbury Lodge F & AM #362, and a Charter member of American Legion Post #768 .

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his son, John Wain, also by 12 brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Margaret McCort Wain, his children, Bill (Debbie) Wain of Beallsville and Melinda (Charles) Fisher of Whitehall; seven grandchildren; Ian Wain, David Wain, Elaine Alleman, Kayla Harman, Nicole Wain, Dana Decker and Rick Decker; 16 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 7th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at the Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville where Masonic services will be held at 6:30 PM. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 8th at 11 AM at the Beallsville United Methodist Church with Pastor Tina Gallaher officiating.         Mary (Donnye) Wallace, 81, died in Tulsa on May 20, 2009.

        Donnye was born on Feb. 11, 1928 in Missouri to James Robert and Mildred (Beasley) Padgett. She married Warren B. Wallace in 1947 in Gerard, KA. Donnye enjoyed sewing but her family was most important to her.

        Her husband preceded her in death on July 13, 2005. Her parents also preceded her in death.

        Donnye is survived by her daughter, Regina Wallace-Fuller and husband, Jack of Okmulgee, a son, Bob Wallace and wife Annette of Broken Arrow,OK. Grandchildren; Trisha Bailey, Cameron Colt, Amy Wallace and Bryce Wallace, eight great grandchildren, and two brothers; Cletus Padgett & Bob Padgett both of Missouri.

WALTER, Helen Mae, 83, of Clover Ridge, Powhatan Point, Ohio, died Monday, April 27, 2009, at Belmont Community Hospital in Bellaire. She was born in Powhatan Point on March 2, 1926, daughter of the late Grover C. and Stella Thomas Richardson.

Helen was married to Wayne T. Walter, who preceded her in death, and spent most of her life as a homemaker. She and her husband raised three daughters, Nancy (Randy) Boan of Armstrong Mills, Ohio, Pat (Cliff) Marcum of Beallsville, Ohio, and Sandy (Scott) Moretz of Suwanee, Georgia. She was the loving grandmother of six grandchildren, Sara Boan, Andrew (Kristin) Boan, Alan Boan, Alicia Marcum, Anthony Marcum, and Daniel Moretz. She is also survived by a brother, Carroll Richardson, of Bellaire.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Harry and James Richardson; sisters, Mary Berka and Virginia Ockert; and two infant sisters.

Helen was a member of Grandview Christian Church near her home on Clover Ridge, where she lived for 57 years. For the past two years, she had resided at Westwood Landing in Woodsfield.

Family and friends will be received at Toothman Funeral Home in Jacobsburg on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m., where services will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Pastor George Coffman officiating. Burial will follow in Powhatan Cemetery.

Gerald was a retired machinist and former owner of Ward Mold and Machine, Lewisville, Ohio; a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He enjoyed farming, camping, traveling and his family.

       In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Turney Ward on January 1, 2005.

        She was born May 27, 1966, in Hammond, to Bill and Sharon K. Schmidt.

        Karen married Paul Ward in Plymouth, on April 29, 1989. She was a 1985 graduate of Morgan Township High School. She loved her children and enjoyed watching the fall leaves.

        She is survived by her husband, Paul Ward; four children, Paul Ryan Schmidt, Jordon Michael Schmidt, Ashlee Nicole Ward, and Jared Franklin Ward, all of Wabash; two brothers, Billy Schmidt of Wisconsin and Lloyd Schmidt of Knox; a sister, Kathy Riley of Leroy; and a granddaughter, Zoey Schmidt of Wolcottville.

        She was preceded in death by her parents.

        Funeral services will be held at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Avenue, Wabash, on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Tom Cochran officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawns Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call 1-2 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.

        George B. Washburn, age 96, of Burr Ridge. Beloved husband of Thelma; loving father of Kenneth (Sally) and Gregory (Sarah); devoted grandfather of 10 and great-grandfather of 15. He was preceded in death by his first wife Doris, his sister Marion Fowler, and 3 grandchildren. George was born in LaGrange on December 21, 1912, jokingly referred to as the "Titanic Baby." He attended St. Francis Xavier Elementary and graduated LTHS, Class of 1930. At age 18, George was the Director for The LaGrange Cadets Boys Choir (sponsored by Hallowell & James). High School graduation in 1930 found him in the midst of The Great Depression. He founded LaGrange Letterpress Printing Co., and remained in the printing business for over 50 years until his retirement from Washburn Graficolor at the age of 75. He was active in several community civic activities including The Pet Parade. George had a lifelong passion for the game of golf, beginning at the age of 10 and concluding with his final round at the age of 94. He was a 50-year member of The LaGrange Country Club.

        Visitation was Thursday, January 15 at Hallowell & James Funeral Home; 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside. Family and friends met Friday, January 16 at St. Isaac Jogues Church; 306 W. Eagles in Paden City, WV; Moose Lodge #931 New Martinsville; American Legion #81 and Community Sportsman Club, both in Pine Grove, WV; a U.S. Air Force veteran; and a Methodist by faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray M. and Freda Wildman Watson Sr.

Lavona Anne "Bonnie" Weber, 77, of 216 Eastern Avenue, Woodsfield, Ohio, passed away Saturday morning, October 3, 2009, at Woodsfield Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born in Barberton, Ohio, on October 18, 1931, to Harry Edwin and Hazel Evelina Hill Dye. Bonnie was a 1949 graduate of Coventry High School.

She was a former librarian at the Woodsfield Elementary School and a retired clerk for the former City Loan & Savings Company, Woodsfield, Ohio. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Woodsfield, Ohio; a member of the Garden Club and also served as President of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Post 5109, Woodsfield, Ohio. In recent years, she did volunteer work including the local food bank, women's center, and elementary school. She was also a Sunday school teacher. Her hobbies were gardening, reading, traveling, doing crossword puzzles, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children, Anne Wade of Circleville, Alan (Wendie Wertz) Berry of Massillon, and Gene (Carolee Rafn) Berry of Roanoke, VA; grandchildren Kate Wade (Jeremy) Addy of Burien, WA, John Wade of Columbus, Allison Berry and Ashley Berry, both of Canal Fulton, Melissa Berry of Charlottesville, VA, Stephen Berry of Winston-Salem, NC, and Eric Berry of Roanoke, VA; great-grandson Preston Addy of Burien, WA; sister Dorothy (Edward) Pavkov of Norton; aunt Marie Dye Hensel of Doylestown; husband Urban W. Midge had worked at the Wright Patterson Air Force base as an aircraft mechanic prior to World War II. During World War II he was in the Army Air Corp. on the Liberty Ship in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, receiving 4 Bronze Stars.

Marjorie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and a homemaker for many years. She loved to play bingo, and was a member of the St. Clairsville, VFW.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Kostelia.

WEHR, Vernon, 83, of Barnesville, Ohio, died Monday February 9, 2009, in Wheeling Hospital. He was born June 4, 1925, in Calais, Ohio, son of the late Hort Wehr and Fay Carpenter Wehr.

Vernon was a Protestant. He and Marjorie enjoyed their CB radio friends, and attending auctions together.

He was retired from North American Coal Company 1 Mine of Powhatan; was the former vice president of the Powhatan Local UMWA; chairman of the safety committee, and active with the UMWA throughout his career.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Saffell Wehr; sister, Helma Stephen; brothers, Curtis, Donnie and William Wehr.

WELLS, Eugene S., 93, of Barnesville, Ohio, formerly of Jerusalem, Ohio, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at his home. He was born December 13, 1915, in Noble County, a son of the late James and Josephine Finley Wells.

Eugene was retired from the Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation Office; a Methodist by faith; a US Army Veteran of WWII, where Eugene fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a Purple Heart recipient; was a past director of Woodsfield Savings Bank; a charter member of the Rolling Hills Ruritan Club; a former president of the Monroe County Agriculture Society; and a member of the Farm Bureau; American Legion; and the Ohio Valley Cattlemans Association.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Louise Gallagher Wells; sisters, Mary Harper and Lela Kirksey; and a brother, Doris Wells.

Surviving are his wife, Eileen Oliver Wells; a daughter, Melba Ann (Scott) Fraley of Grove City, Ohio; a son, Mark (Delores) Wells of Jerusalem; stepchildren, Tilly Wells, Sharon (Bill) Davis, Debbie (Jack) Crum, and Richard (Nancy) Wells all of Barnesville; four grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

WILEY, Elizabeth Ann passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2008. Elizabeth was born December 17, 1938 in Powhatan Point, Ohio, the daughter of the late Arthur and Clara Luckett Wiley.

She graduated from Powhatan High School in 1957 with top honors. Elizabeth then attended Ohio State University on a scholarship for two years and received a Bachelor degree from Wheeling College in Wheeling. She believed that obtaining an education was one of the keys to a successful life. Elizabeth worked for many years at the Ormet Aluminum Plant in Hannibal, Ohio.

Having been raised in the Baptist tradition, Elizabeth felt that she was called upon to live her life as a Christian. Her deeply held religious beliefs were first ingrained in her by her mother, who labored unselfishly to care for nine children after her husband’s death at an early age.

Elizabeth subscribed to the Christian belief that we should respond to God's call to actively use our time, talents and money in ministries and to perceive all human beings as brothers and sisters. When Elizabeth left home, her religious convictions stayed with her throughout her college years and professional life.

In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by two brothers, Cornelius and Robert Benjamin Wiley.

Elizabeth is survived by her siblings, Arthur Wiley and his wife, Kim, of Oklahoma City, Okla., John Wiley and his wife, Dorothy, of Capital Heights, Md., Thelma Wiley-Bowles and her husband, Destin, of Chicago, Ill., Christina Wiley-Randolph and her husband, Alexander, of Temple Hills, Md., Andrew Wiley, and Verla Wiley, both of Temple Hills; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

        Mr. Edward Joseph Willoughby, 52, of Fish Lake, died at 11:46 a.m., on June 3, 2009 at the scene of an accident.

        Mr. Willoughby was born Feb. 8, 1957 in La Porte, to Raymond and Madaline (Smith) Willoughby.

        He was engaged to Paula (Wolff) Dicus and was previously married to Roxsana Willoughby .

        Mr. Willoughby was a diesel mechanic/cryogenic technician for Praxair, La Porte.

        He was a member of Fish Lake American Legion 400, (Sons of American Legion) enjoyed hunting, horseshoes and loved his family and friends.

        He leaves behind one daughter, Tabatha L. Willoughby of La Porte, two sons, Edward L. and Michael R. Willoughby, both of Fish Lake; seven grandchildren; fiancee, Paula (Wolff) Dicus of Fish Lake; ex-wife, Roxsana Willoughby of La Porte; two sisters, Rose Kneifel of La Porte, Patty (Larry) Williamson of Fish Lake; three brothers, Raymond Willoughby of La Porte, Harry Salzer of Century, Fla., Danny Salzer of La Porte and many nieces and nephews.

        He is preceded by his parents and grandparents.

        Rita Mae Wilson, age 68, of Mindenmines, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Barton County Memorial Hospital, following a long illness.

        Rita was born February 19, 1941, at Eagle Grove, Iowa, one of the ten children of Marlon and Vera Mae (Beireis) Akins.  She was married to Donald Eugene Wilson for 27 years before he preceded her in death in 1988.   She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Marie Perryman; two brothers, Roy and Billy Akins; and a grandson, Donald Wayne.

        In addition to being a homemaker, Rita was a child care provider in her home for many years.  She was a member of Mindenmines Christian Church and had been an active volunteer in her community.

        Survivors include her companion of 14 years, Jack Kelsey; a son and daughter-in-law, Don & Mindy Wilson, Lamar; two daughters, Sherriee & husband Gary Simpson, Sheldon, and Velda Wilson of the home; four brothers, Richard, Robert, Michael and Wayne Akins; three sisters, Judy Marko, Betty Lawson, and Patricia Hilz; three grandchildren, Misty Greene, Casey Wilson, and Colton Wilson; and five great-grandchildren.

        Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 30th, at Daniel Funeral Home in Lamar where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday.  Burial will be in Lake Cemetery in Lamar.

He was a retired maintenance storeroom employee of Conalco in Hannibal, Ohio; a member of the Sardis United Methodist Church and Sardis Volunteer Fire Dept.; and a U.S. Army Air Corp. veteran of WWII.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, E. Merle Winkler; and three brothers, Clyde, Roy, and Homer Winkler.

Sally was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and the University of Cincinnati School of Law. She worked for the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. for many years and retired as an Administrator at West Virginia State College.

She was a member of the Lakeside United Methodist Church; past President of the Lakeside Property Owners Association and the Lakeside Women's Club. She was the author of six books and numerous articles for local publicators.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Judge Bernard G. and Esther (Parson) Witten; brother, Bernard G. Witten and nephew, Bernard G. Witten, Jr.

Jeffs love of politics led him to accept the position as the first Village Administrator of Woodsfield, Ohio. He also operated many businesses, volunteered endless hours to civic groups and the youth of Monroe County. Jeff was the founder and first President of the Sideliners football boosters, Monroe County Youth Soccer, River Youth Football and Goalkeepers Soccer Boosters. He started the high school soccer program at Monroe Central High School, Woodsfield, Ohio and was their first Head Coach. Jeff was a member of the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, Woodsfield Kiwanis Club, Monroe County CIC, Woodsfield Village Council and was an avid Ohio State fan.

       He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leonard and Helen Nixon who raised him.

       In addition to his mother, he leaves behind his wife of 24 years, Jenny Woodell; his four children: Jeffrey Woodell and Timothy Woodell both of Woodsfield, Ohio; Ashley and Reagan Woodell both of the home; one sister: Teresa Gray of St. Clairsville, Ohio; one brother: Kevin Gray of Woodsfield, Ohio; one aunt: Nancy Hastings of Woodsfield, Ohio.

He was a member of the Somerton Fire Dept. for 50 years, of which he served as EMT and Fire Chief from 1973-1979.

He was retired manager of Monroe Auto Parts of Woodsfield for 25 years and a member of the Monroe Miserable Misfits Camping Club.

        YBARGUEN, Mari Elizabeth Lang (91) passed away Dec. 5, 2009 in Fallbrook, CA. She was born Dec. 10, 1917, in South Dakota, and grew up in Twin Falls, Idaho. She raised her family in Long Beach, CA, where she was a member of the El Dorado Women's Golf Club. She will be greatly missed by her children, Sunni Popp, Jack Ybarguen, and Crissi Fergus; nine grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and three sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, in 1997. Memorial services Saturday, Dec. 12 at 11:30am at the Mission San Luis Rey.

Jack D. Yoho, age 66, of Newton Falls, Ohio formerly of Woodsfield died Wednesday May 13, 2009 at St. Joseph Health Center Warren, Ohio. He was born July 25, 1942 in Woodsfield a son of the late Everett Yoho and Martha Reeves Yoho.

He was the Owner-Operator of the Trumbull County Auto Supply – NAPA in Warren, Ohio. Jack was in the National Guard Army Reserve and attended the Woodsfield Free Methodist Church.

Preceded in death by 1 sister: Geraldine Harmon, 1 brother-in-law: Clarence Huntsman.

He is survived by 3 brothers: Bob (Ruth) Yoho – Woodsfield, Bill (Shirley) Yoho – Woodsfield, Richard (Marsha) Yoho – Woodsfield, 1 sister: La Donna Huntsman – Woodsfield, Several nieces, nephews and his dog Blake.

        David B. Yoke, 62, of Clarksburg, formerly of South Charleston, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at the United Hospital Center.

        He was born in Clarksburg, on Oct. 11, 1947, a son of the late Rexal B. Yoke and Cleta M. (Corder) Yoke.

        He is survived by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Alan L. and Shirley Yoke of St. Albans and Kevin S. Yoke of Morgantown; two nieces, Allison M. Fisher and her husband, Jeremy of St. Albans and Sara J. Yoke, serving overseas; and great-nephew, Brett Fisher.

        Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, Clarksburg, with Pastor Pamela Moore presiding. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

        Friends will be received two hour prior to the service.

       Dale was a retired laborer and farmer; a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, Ohio; a 51 year member of the Laborers Union Local 639, Marietta, Ohio. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time.

       In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Reich Yontz; two brothers, Joseph Yontz and Ronnie Yontz; three sisters, Leona Michel, Thelma Hohman and Bertha Michel.

       Surviving are four sons: Mark (Jane) Yontz of Antioch, Ohio, Jeff Yontz of the home, Michael Yontz and fiance Lora Cox of Lewisville, Ohio and Doug (Jeannie) Yontz of Woodsfield, Ohio; one brother: Raphael (Rita) Yontz of Jerusalem, Ohio; two grandchildren: Megan and Carley Yontz; a special friend: Gertrude Burkhart of Norwich, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.     Young, Franklin Dewayne Sr., “Uncle Frank”, of Leng Archer Road, Sardis, Ohio, died Friday, March 13, 2009 at Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio.He was born March 16, 1941 in New Martinsville, WV, the son of the late Ralph and Ida Quinn Young.

    He was a retired heavy equipment operator for the Wetzel County Landfill; a U.S. Army veteran, and a Protestant by faith.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Glen, Floyd, Emery, and Harley Young; and a sister, Gladys Burnside.
    Survivors include his wife, Alma Young; three daughters, Sharon Anderson of Paden City, WV, Sheila Young of Sardis, and Patty (Stanley Jr.) McIntyre; two sons, Franklin (Crystal) Young Jr. and David Young, both of Sardis; two brothers, Burton (Jean) Young of New Martinsville and Robert (Sue) Young of Thomas, WV; a sister, Pearl (Gene) Smith of Woodsfield, Ohio; 9 grandchildren; a great granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

H. George Zonker, Jr., 83, of 224 Center Street, Woodsfield, Ohio died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the Barnesville Hospital, Barnesville, Ohio. He was born at Woodsfield, Ohio on October 25, 1925 a son of the late Homer George Zonker, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Harper Zonker.

George was a retired employee of East Ohio Gas Company; a former police officer for the Village of Woodsfield, Ohio; served as a former councilman and mayor for the Village of Woodsfield, Ohio. He was a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ, Woodsfield, Ohio; a U.S. Navy veteran serving as an armed guard during W.W.II.; a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and was a charter member of the Woodsfield Emergency Squad.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Motter and Lillian Fox; seven brothers, Pete, Roy, Wilford, John, Derrel, Ray and Robert Zonker.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda V. Bertschy Zonker whom he married on September 5, 1948; four daughters: Karen Robbins and Steve Ogle of Woodsfield, Ohio, Annette (Patrick) McMillen of Columbus, Ohio, Connie Isaly of Florence, Alabama and Janet (Joe) Reed of Woodsfield, Ohio; one son: Harry (Jill) Zonker of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; one brother: Kenneth Zonker of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren: Heather (Brent) Dick, Jessica and Dana Isaly, Ryan McMillen, Hannah and Megan Zonker; two great grandchildren: Alexis and Brandon Dick.

Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, 37501 State Route 78 West, Woodsfield, Ohio from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009 where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2009 with Chuck Schultheisz and Keith Jones officiating.
