Gary Bent, the Victorville federal prison guard who was
shot to death in a Lompoc hotel room last week, was a father of four who was
headed to a Christian retreat after training at the Lompoc prison, family
members said Monday.
“He was a good family man,” said brother-in-law Cody
Ridley, 34, a businessman in San Jacinto. “He was a Christian man and he loved
his children.”
Bent was killed about 9:30 p.m. Thursday in his room at the
Embassy Suites, 1117 North H St., where several federal correctional officers
had registered while in town for training.
He suffered a fatal wound from a handgun toward the back of
his neck, according to police.
Timothy Sean McNally, 33, a guard at the Lompoc Federal
Correctional Complex since July 2006, was arrested shortly after midnight
Friday morning at a residence in the 1100 block of West Pine Avenue on
suspicion of homicide, according to authorities.
He is scheduled for his first appearance today at 1:30 p.m.
in Santa Barbara County Superior Court, Lompoc.
The district attorney’s office late Monday was still
awaiting investigative paperwork from the Lompoc Police Department.
Police released few new details Monday about the shooting,
but did confirm that McNally and Bent knew each other. Bent’s mother-in-law
said he had been to training in Lompoc in past years with other correctional
officers from around the state.
Bent’s children — boys ages 21?2 and 13 and girls 5 and 9 —
are trying to cope with the death of their father, said his mother-in-law,
Cindy Andrews, Calimesa, Calif.
Andrews said she told her grandchildren the tragic news
after her daughter called her at 1:30 a.m. Friday.
“My daughter, she couldn’t do it,” Andrews said. “She held
them as I told them what had happened. It was the most heartbreaking thing I’ve
ever seen. The curdling screams that those children made. They’ve had so many
breakdowns since they were told.”
Andrews said the children’s strong Christian faith has
helped get them through the past few days.
“The other night I was trying to get the kids to lighten up
a little bit. We were all singing songs,” she said. “My granddaughter said, ‘I
want you to play “Give it to Jesus.” I’m going to sing it real loud so my dad
can hear me singing in heaven.’”
Andrews said the words to the song encourage Christians to
turn to Jesus in times of hardship.
“It’s definitely a roller coaster ride. My daughter and
sons kind of understand. Their father passed away when they were 8, 10 and 12.”
Andrews said she felt sympathy for McNally’s family as well.
“To me, it’s very sad on both families,” she said.
A close friend of McNally’s on Monday expressed surprise at
the shooting.
“We’re all in shock,” said Gil Muro, who has known McNally
since their days at Lompoc High School. McNally graduated in 1998.
“It’s unfortunate it happened this way,” said Muro, who
owns the Hotrod Ranch on West Central Avenue. “I think if you were to talk to
any of his friends, they would be surprised.”
Ridley said Bent, who recently separated from his wife,
overcame a difficult childhood and found success in the justice system. He had
worked his way up to lieutenant and was a supervisor at the Victorville Federal
Correctional Complex, Ridley said.
“It was kind of like a second family,” Ridley said.
“He was an inspiration for me. Gary had all the odds
stacked against him. He didn’t have his mom. He didn’t have his dad,” he said.
“His brothers and sisters were all in and out of jail. He’s always kind of been
on his own. He was raised by his grandparents.
“He was a success story,” Ridley said. He said Bent was to
leave Friday morning for a retreat for Christian men at Crestline in Big Bear.
Now, he said, the family is trying to piece together what
happened by talking to Bent’s friends, and co-workers who attended the training
in Lompoc and were registered at the same hotel.
Authorities have given basic information, but won’t give
them details until the investigation is complete, Ridley said.
“We want to know what the motive was. Why was he shot in
the back of the neck?”

native killed in
shooting
Fellow correctional officer
arrested
LOMPOC — A 32-year-old corrections officer raised in Yucca
Valley was shot to death in a hotel room here Thursday, March 8. A fellow
prison guard is accused of his murder.
Gary Michael Bent, a lieutenant at the Victorville Federal
Correctional Complex, had just finished a training session at Lompoc’s federal
prison. He and several other officers were staying at the city’s Embassy Suites
hotel, and were spending time together the night of the shooting.
“It was the last night that they were all going to be in
town,” Sgt. Chuck Strange, spokesman for the Lompoc Police Department, said
Tuesday, March 13.
Police received word that a shooting had taken place in a
first-floor hotel room about 10:13 p.m., Strange wrote in a news release. After
knocking at the room’s front door and getting no response, they entered and
found Bent’s body. He appeared to have been shot once in the back of the neck.
Investigators arrested 33-year-old Timothy Sean McNally of
Lompoc Friday, March 9, on suspicion of homicide. He was scheduled to be
arraigned Tuesday afternoon.
Strange said police have not identified a motive for the
shooting. “Obviously, the two of them knew each other, but (investigators)
don’t know the extent of their relationship,” he said. “We’re still trying to
get handle on that by talking to friends and relatives.”
Bent is survived by a number of family members in Yucca
Valley, including two sons, ages 13 and 2 1/2, and two daughters, ages 9 and 5.
“He was a good Christian family man,” Bobbie Bent, his wife
of 10 years, said.
He was raised by his grandparents, Jack and Sharon Pope,
who still live in Yucca Valley. His grandfather called Bent an upstanding young
man dedicated to his job. Pope can’t understand why anyone would want to hurt
his grandson.
“Nobody knows why. He was loved. There’s no reason,” Pope
said Tuesday via telephone. “As a matter of fact, the warden and chaplain from
the prison visited me after it happened and told me how loved and respected he
was.”
According to his grandfather, Bent was the youngest person
to achieve the rank of lieutenant in the federal prisons. He served on a
special weapons and tactics team and was climbing the ladder to captain.
“He loved his job; he took pride in his work,” Bobbie Bent
said.
Brother to eight, Bent lost his mother in November last
year, when Deborah Pope Gerdes was hit by three cars while crossing Twentynine
Palms Highway in Yucca Valley.
He was a devoted father and sibling who called all his
brothers, even his older ones, his “little brothers,” because he was the
biggest.
“He was a happy, loving guy. He had the biggest heart
ever,” Bobbie Bent said. “He would do anything for anybody.”
Bent had been in Lompoc for six weeks for his annual
training. “Thursday was his last day, and he was supposed to come home the next
day,” Pope said. “He was really looking forward to coming home.”

Ex-Prison Guard Found Guilty
in Friend's Death
SANTA MARIA, Calif.
(AP) - Jurors have convicted a former Central Coast prison guard of
second-degree murder in the shooting death of a friend.
The Lompoc Record (http://bit.ly/19F60Fe ) reports Timothy
McNally buried his face in his hands after the verdict was read Thursday.
The defense claimed McNally was playing around with his 9
mm pistol last year and pointed it at his friend, Gary Bent, a Victorville
correctional officer who was in town for riot-control training. The weapon
discharged, killing Bent.
McNally's lawyer maintains
the shooting was an accident.
Bent's widow, Bobbie, cried when the verdict was announced,
saying justice was served for her five children.
The verdict comes after McNally's first trial earlier this year
ended with a hung jury. The 33-year-old faces 25 years to life when he is
sentenced in November.

Timothy McNally, the former Lompoc prison guard convicted
in the shooting death of a Victorville correctional officer, has been sentenced
to 25 years to life in prison for second-degree murder.
McNally was expected to be sentenced last week, but his
attorney, Michael Scott, filed a motion the day before the hearing seeking a
new trial, which was denied by Judge Patricia Kelly prior to sentencing the
defense attorney’s client.
Kelly also opted to
not modify the jury’s verdict to involuntary manslaughter, which Scott had also
requested as part of his motion.
“What occurred was criminal negligence,” Scott argued,
adding he hoped Kelly would rule in his favor. “This isn’t a life case, and
it’s not a second-degree murder case.”
Had Kelly overturned the jury’s verdict, the maximum
sentence McNally would’ve received for an involuntary manslaughter conviction
was four years, plus 10 years for using a gun. He would’ve been eligible for
parole by age 42.
ORIGINAL: A judge this morning denied a motion for a new
trial for the former Lompoc prison guard convicted in the shooting death of a
Victorville correctional officer.
Timothy McNally, 33, was convicted of second-degree murder
in the shooting death of Gary Bent, a 32-year-old prison guard in Victorville
who died in a Lompoc hotel bathroom after he was shot once in the left side of
the neck by McNally.
Earlier this month, McNally was set to be sentenced to 15
years to life in prison before his attorney, Michael Scott, filed a 14-page
motion seeking a new trial and delaying the scheduled sentencing hearing.

Property dispute
turns deadly in
Smithfield; bus driver
remembered
Police believe a property dispute led to the fatal shooting
of a Henry County man on Saturday afternoon.
Detectives from Kentucky State Police Post 5 are
investigating the the death of Joseph Bibelhauser, 61.
A 911 call alerted KSP to an altercation and possible
shooting in the 7600 block of Ballardsville Road in Smithfield.
According to police, Bibelhauser died at the scene from a
gunshot wound to the head.
The alleged shooter, 57-year-old James Fowler of
Smithfield, is charged with murder and held on a $100,000 bond at the Carroll
County jail.
KSP Detective Kurt Buhts is leading the investigation.
Bibelhauser worked as a bus driver for The HDB Service Group,
which created Oldham County's public bus service and also provides
transportation for seniors.
He viewed his job as more than a bus driver.
Co-workers remember Bibelhauser using his time behind the
wheel as a chance to serve others.
He shared home-grown produce with passengers, but his
helping hand didn't stop with tomatoes or squash.
One elderly passenger mentioned her embarrassment at her
unkempt yard, and Bibelhauser showed up on a Saturday morning to mow it.
After seeing a
passenger nearly fall as she walked from her home, he power washed her ramp.
And on rainy days, he sometimes drove passengers all the
way to their door, rather than having them walk in the rain.
His attitude permeated to all who worked for the bus
service. In his words, "Lotta people count on us. Can't let 'em
down!"
Funeral visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at
Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home in La Grange. A Funeral mass is 10 a.m. Wednesday,
Aug.5 at St. John's Catholic Church in Eminence.

Case, Grace Virginia Schillinger Case, nee Kilby

1 or 2 Jun 2012
Cordova, Illinois
Grace V. Schillinger Case, of Cordova, Illinois, died
Thursday, May 31, 2012, in Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa, at
the wonderful age of "98". She was surrounded by her family with
loving care and devotion.
Services are 11:00 a.m.
Monday at First Congregational Church, Moline, with The Reverend Allen
Mothershed officiating. Burial is in Colbert Cemetery in Hanna Township, Henry
County. Visitation is 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation
Center, Moline. Memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
What a full and wonderful life she did live! Her parents,
Nelson and Edith Kilby, had been trying to have a baby for ten years and had
put their name in for adoption at a Chicago Hospital. A baby boy was born and a
call was made, to which Edith said, "Oh, thank you very much, but I am
pregnant. We are going to have a child of our very own!" Grace Virginia
Kilby was born June 16, 1913, in Toulon, Illinois. They called her
"Grace" because she was a gift from God. She was a lifetime member of
Baptist faith.
At six, she wrote her first story. She loved pencils, tablets,
and writing stories. At seven, she would ride her horse bareback, standing
barefoot on his back at full gallop. At 16 ½ years old, she married Ferd
Schillinger, a Henry County farmer, on January 28, 1929. They raised their six
children on a farm in rural Coal Valley, with no indoor bathroom or running
water.
She gardened, canned, washed and ironed, raised chickens,
and sold eggs for grocery money. Counting hired men and her nephew, Jerry
Kruger, there were ten around her table every meal. She and Ferd loved to
dance. She would say, "He was the most handsome man on the dance floor at
the Col Ballroom."
Her flower gardens and lily pools were a sight to behold,
where children played and weddings were held. Grace was a woman of many
talents, among them was her gift of WORDS. Whether her words were written or
spoken, or thoughts or prayers. She passed this gift to all.
Money was short, but her husband, Ferd, paid for a two-year
correspondence writing course. It changed her life. She wrote about farm life,
and wrote a column for the Moline Daily Dispatch, "The Outdoor Way".
She wrote "Country Lane" and "Stepping Stones" for the
Orion Times for over 50 years. She wrote for the Lighthouse Beacon, where she resided
for the past 3 years. She gained national notoriety through her story in
"The Farm Journal" magazine. She also wrote two books.
She truly loved the United States Postal Service! She wrote
letters to friends and family all of her life. If you were lucky enough to
receive a letter from Grace, you saved it. They were treasures! She was also
blessed by those who sent her letters. She would run to the mailbox to receive
correspondence. It was the highlight of her day.
They had a summer cabin at Shady Beach on the Rock River,
where they fished and children water-skied, and everyone was welcome.
Ferd passed away after 55 years of marriage. After grieving
his death for five years, she met Bob Case, who lived on the Mississippi River.
Forty-five days later, they were married, on March 28, 1989. She wrote him
letters every day telling him why she loved him. He would say, "Tell me
again, Grace."
Grace is survived by her children, Joe and Margo
Schillinger of Geneseo, John Schillinger of Moline, Carol and Bob Reese of
Colona, Sharon and Lon Pirkl of Colona, Sunny and Jim Moorhusen of Cordova, and
Rich and Diane Schillinger of Lynn Center; 17 grandchildren; many
great-grandchildren; Bob Case's son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Lois Case,
and their three sons; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by
her husbands, sisters, Julia Painter and Betty Holden, a brother, James Kilby,
and daughters-in-law, Judy, Thelma, and Debra Schillinger.
The family invites you to share stories and condolences and
light a candle in Grace's memory at www.TrimbleFuneralHomes.com.

Christman, Ardis
Pearl Christman, nee Geer
Source: Pacific View Memorial
Park and Mortuary; Apr 2012 [online]
July 6, 1925 - April 3, 2012
Ardis Pearl Christman, age 86, of Freedom Village, Lake Forest,
California passed away on April 3, 2012. She was born July 6, 1925 in Grant
County, North Dakota in a sod house. There, she was sent off to school on a
pony that knew the path back and forth. Also, in North Dakota, as a young girl
she adopted a pet skunk. Her dad, Freeman Geer was a rancher, farmer and later
in life an upholsterer. Her mother, Sadie raised five children. Ardis's
brothers were Elliott, Ferris (Red), and Clifford. They all preceded Ardis in
death. She is survived by her younger sister, Velma Peck of Washington. As a
young girl, Ardis's family worked their way, during the difficult times of the
Depression, to Ellensburg, Washington, living in a rustic home-built camper
along the way. In the early 1940's she moved to Seattle with her best friend
Maxine Anthony(Wilson) and worked as, 'Rosie the Riveter' on B-17's and P-38's.
While working in Seattle and attending USO dances, she met the love of her
life: the TALL, handsome Lloyd Ray Christman. Lloyd taught her the double
shuffle, their favorite dance, and as a pair they "cut a rug." One of
their favorite songs was, "Always."
After their marriage, Ardis moved with
her beloved sailor boy and struggled to survive in the naval town of Norfolk,
Virginia. After the War, they moved to Ontario, California, Lloyd's hometown.
Lloyd tore down a barn for the Chaffee sisters from which he recycled the wood
and square nails to build their first home. In Ontario, they raised their two
boys, Richard Ray and Robert Lloyd. She enjoyed being a mom, den mother, PTA
member and Copperette. Many memorable weekends were spent at the cabin in
Angeles Oaks that Lloyd built with help from family and friends.
In 1963, the family
moved to the City of Orange, where the boys graduated from high school. As a
result of Lloyd's job promotion in 1969, he and Ardis moved to Camarillo. There
they formed many lifelong friendships, took up square dancing and with the
cul-de-sac group enjoyed many trips and good times together. During this time
Ardis became Head Baker for a school district, an extraordinary tole painter,
and world traveler. Ardis remained dedicated to her Washington state Geer
family and enjoyed attending reunions. Ardis loved providing arts and crafts
projects, enjoyed by all who attended. Lloyd and Ardy were married for almost
50 years. After his death in 1995, she remodeled, re-landscaped, joined the Red
Hatters, took trips with the Camarillo Friends of the Library, continued
her world travels, joined the Camarillo Christian Church and expressed her own
unique voice.
Moving to Freedom
Village, Lake Forest in 2005, she blossomed once again as she became involved
with new friends,
volunteering, and expressing her artistic talents in the Sunshine Room to the
benefit of all the residents. She also joined Saddleback Christian Church
continuing her spiritual journey. During this time, her son Richard Ray
preceded her in death. The move to Freedom Village was one of the initiatives
Ardis undertook to manage her end of life needs in consideration and respect for
family, making the final life transition as easy as possible for everyone. The
family wishes to thank the staff of Freedom Village Heath Care Center for the
exceptional care given to Ardis during the last months of her life.
What did Ardis leave as part of her legacy? She shared her love of life
with family and friends. She loved the outdoors, nature, gardens, and trees
were always a huggable moment, be they a grizzly Bristlecone Pine, or a large
oak. Ardis played violin in high school and imparted her lifelong enjoyment of
music to her two talented boys and grandson, Evan. She treasured her grandsons,
Evan, Jay and Kristopher who were showered with her unconditional time, energy
and love. Her thoughtfulness and concern for others graced all she did in life
imparting much love to family and long-term friends. She easily struck up a
conversation with anyone who crossed her path and left them feeling blessed.
She provided a positive example, as a model of aging, maintaining an overall
positive attitude, even under difficult circumstances. For family, she provided
the example of travel and time together; be it playing games, heli-hiking or
the cabins at Lake Mary for building memories of times and adventures shared.
This legacy will continue to be passed on.
Ardis Christman is survived by her
son, Robert Lloyd Christman; daughter-in-law, Meredith; grandson, Evan Lloyd;
daughter-in-law, Jill Christman; grandson, Jay Richard Christman; sister,
Velma; and honorary family, Richard, Christine and Kristopher Lloyd Greek;
along with many relatives and friends.
For those wishing to
commemorate Ardis's life, donations may be given to the charity of their
choice.

great-granddaughter, Ashton Mandich turn one next month.
He will also be remembered by his brother Ronald
"Ronnie" Davis and sisters; Barbara (Dick) Guenther and Jan (Bob)
Frees, by dozens of nieces and nephews and many, many relatives, neighbors,
coworkers and friends.
Gene was born and raised "on the hill" in
Bellaire, Ohio and was always proud to be a "Big Red." In the 1960's
he ran two Mobil service stations in Bellaire often working 90+ hours a week to
support his young family. Later he worked as a millwright at Ormet Corporation
of Hannibal, Ohio for over 30 years. He often spoke of the men who worked there
with friendship and respect for doing jobs that were very hard physical work.
From his earliest years, Gene always loved nature. He was
happiest when outside walking the hills and woods. He loved animals. For many
years he kept cows and sheep and always a pony or two for his girls. He grew a garden
that was the envy of all who saw it. He built dozens of bird feeders and fed
the birds year around.
In addition to loving nature, Gene was very good with his
hands. He worked on engines and machines his whole life. Gene and Linda enjoyed
going to yard sales and flea markets. After he retired, he built his own
workshop where he repaired and restored old furniture.
Gene also genuinely liked people, especially children.
Three generations of children who grew up "on the hill" knew him as
"Pappy Gene". He was never too busy to talk to a child; to fix a
bicycle, to listen to a problem.
Gene was a good neighbor. He was always willing to help
those who needed help. Over the years, he helped friends and neighbors fix
cars, make hay, repair roofs and much more.
Gene was also "ornery" as he called it. He
loved to laugh and enjoyed practical jokes. His humor, though occasionally
"off color" was never petty or mean spirited. He was a true optimist,
and lived each day to its fullest. Like his hero, John Wayne, he faced life
straight with "his boots on".
Gene spent his last three years living at Sunrise of
Bexley in Columbus, Ohio near his eldest daughter. The wonderful staff and
residents there came to be a "second" family to Gene and he spent
many happy hours feeding birds, talking to visitors and walking the center's
dog, Chuck.
Friends will be received on Friday from 4-8 pm at
Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Home & Crematory 441 37th Street Bellaire and
also from 10 am until time of services Saturday at 11 am with Minister Bradley
Johnston officiating. Burial follows in Belmont County Memorial Park Cemetery,
St. Clairsville.
