The Reverend Lawrence W. Murphy, Ph.D., age 91, died
January 31 at Westwood Place in Woodsfield, OH, with two of his children
nearby, after declining for several months. He was born in Tonawanda, NY, on
September 17, 1924, a son of the late Joseph Patrick Murphy and Juliana Rita
(Schuster) Murphy. Larry was a renowned linguist, college professor, and
cryptoanalyst who had taught 14 languages, commercially translated 31, and
could read more than 50. He was the first child in his extended
Austro-Hungarian immigrant family to be raised speaking English and the first
to earn a college degree. He grew up in a Central European enclave in Buffalo,
NY, where a dozen languages were spoken. He attended Nativity of the Blessed
Virgin elementary school and Kensington and Riverside high schools in Buffalo,
where he excelled at long distance running as well as languages. He joined the
Army Air Corps in 1942 and served in England, France, and Belgium. After the
armistice he remained in Europe for a year, representing the USA in the Army
Olympics as well as in track and field competitions throughout Europe. He
earned a B.A. in History at Canisius College in Buffalo in 1949, an M.A. in
French at the University of Buffalo (now SUNY at Buffalo) in 1960, and a Ph.D.
in Linguistics at Indiana University in 1968. During his 55-year career he
taught seven foreign languages in primary and secondary schools and at Anne
Arundel Community College in Arnold, MD, which he helped establish. He also
worked at the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, MD, which granted the
highest civilian award to him for his exceptional innovations. He helped
establish the American Translators Association and created and taught the first
Introduction to Professional Translation course.
Larry was an avid birder, especially in the Buffalo area. A
tireless observer oblivious to cold weather, he and his cadre of hardcore
birding pals hitchhiked throughout western New York and southern Canada
documenting the first occurrence of several species of birds. In 1975 he
founded the Otero County (NM) Bird Club (now the United Field Ornithologists of
Roswell). He also was active in the Maryland Ornithological Society for many
years. In 2013 the Buffalo Ornithological Society presented him with a Lifetime
Achievement Award for his contributions to the knowledge of birds of the
Niagara Frontier Region.
Overshadowing his intellectual and avocational achievements
was his livelong devotion to Catholicism and his abiding faith in Jesus Christ.
His simple spirituality imbued him with an aura of humility. His Army chaplain
recommended that he enter the priesthood, but instead Larry married and raised
five children. In 1983 he was ordained a Deacon in El Paso, TX. He served in
that capacity for 20 years. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of
Columbus.
Those who knew Larry remember him as a genuinely kind,
extremely polite, gentle, caring man whose most intense expressions were
"Son of a pup!" and "For the love of Mike!" He always had
time to listen to those in need of his advice. His children remember him as a
hardworking, loyal, and dedicated husband, father, and friend.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
wife of 65 years, Bernadette Isabelle (Cooley) Murphy on July 15, 2014, and
brother Donald Patrick Murphy.
He is survived by a brother, Dennis Joseph Murphy, of
Louisville, KY; five children: Martie (Bob) Heins of Woodsfield, OH; William
(April) Murphy of Fishers, IN; Isabelle Chasse of Huntington Beach, CA; James
(Mary) Murphy of Greeley, CO; and Joseph (Robin) Murphy of Lanham, MD; 13
grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Sylvester Catholic Church in Woodsfield, OH, with Rev. Fr. David Gaydosik
officiating. Burial followed at the
church cemetery.

Oldemeyer, Eileen Joyce Oldemeyer, nee Blankenship
Source: The [Boise] Idaho Statesman; Thursday, 4 Feb
2016
1927 - 2016
Eileen Joyce Oldemeyer died the evening of February 1,
2016. She is survived by her son, Neal Oldemeyer (wife, Nancy); and daughter,
Donna Daniels (husband, Rodger). Eileen also has seven grandchildren: Lacey
Schmidt (husband, Ryan) and Brianna Le Blanc (husband, Brent); Spencer, Bryce
and Kyle Oldemeyer; and Craig and Rick Daniels. She also has two great
grandchildren: Ethan and Mason Le Blanc. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Don Oldemeyer and son, Keith Oldemeyer.
Eileen was born August 1, 1927, in Deadwood, South Dakota to
Frank and Clara Blankenship. She spent the early years of her life in South
Dakota before moving with her family to Walden, Colorado. It was these early
years as a daughter of a forest ranger that shaped her love of the outdoors.
Eileen's family eventually moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado where she finished
high school and went on to college at Colorado State University obtaining a
degree in Sociology. It seems ever so appropriate that her father arranged to
have a small lake in the Colorado Rockies named after her, Lake Eileen.
Eileen met her future husband, Don, at college after he had
returned from the war in Europe. They were married September, 1948 and soon
headed back to Pennsylvania State University where Don completed his doctorate
studies. She and Don then moved to Prosser, Washington for several years where
her son, Keith, was born. In 1954 the Oldemeyer family moved to Nyssa, Oregon
where Neal and Donna soon arrived on the scene. Eileen and Don remained in
Nyssa for 55 years before finally moving closer to their grown children in the
Boise area.
Above all else, Eileen was a loving and caring mother and
wife. It was not until all of her children were in school did she begin work
for the Nyssa School District on a part-time basis - she wanted to be home in
the afternoons when the kids arrived back from school. She began her work in
the Guidance Counselor's Office and then later in the Elementary Library, the
High School English Department, and finally as a full-time secretary for the Superintendent
of Schools. She retired in 1985.
Eileen was also very active in the Nyssa United Methodist
Church volunteering her time in many different ways, most notably as the church
treasurer. She and Don enjoyed touring the country and the world, but probably
had the most fun on their excursions with family and friends focused eastern
Oregon - it was hard to beat camping in the mountains and day trips to the
desert. They also loved the time they spent with their children and
grandchildren.
Neal and Donna want
you to know Eileen was the foundation of our family. She was the woman of her
generation focused on making sure all was right with her home, her husband and
children, and her many, many friends, Mostly, we want you to know that she loved
her husband deeply, to whom she was married for nearly 67 years; you cannot
think of Eileen without her lifelong partner, Don, or vice versa.
We also want to thank the caregivers from Spring Creek
Assisted Living for the wonderful care they have given Eileen over the last
several years and also those from Harrison's Hope Hospice that helped guide us
through the last few months.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, February 8,
2016 at 10:00 a.m., at the Spring Creek recreational facility, 175 E.
Calderwood Drive (near Overland and Meridian) Meridian, ID. A brief burial
service will follow at 1:00 p.m. the same day at Nyssa Cemetery, Nyssa, Oregon.
In Lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to
the Mountain States Tumor Institute.
Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on
Eileen's memorial page at www.summersfuneral.com.
