Sawyer, Roy P. Sawyer

          Roy P. Sawyer, 78, of Columbus, Ohio passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at his home.

          He was born near Gassaway, West Virginia a son of the late Jerry and Elsie Mitchell Sawyer.

          Roy was a retired coal miner for Central Ohio Coal and was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War.

          Surviving are his wife, Yvonne Lowry Sawyer of the home; one son, Daniel Sawyer of Caldwell, Ohio; one daughter, Vickie Sawyer of Columbus, Ohio; one stepson Michael Matheny of Pickerington, Ohio; two step-daughters Tammy Green of Blacklick, Ohio and Laurel Matheny of Columbus, Ohio.

          There will be no visitation or service.  Following cremation, inurnment will be held at the convenience of the family in the Maple Cemetery, Glouster, Ohio.

Schafer, Chester E. Schafer

       Chester E. Schafer, age 100 of Powhatan Point, OH, died Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Liza’s Place, Wheeling, WV.

       He was born February 24, 1917 in Wheeling, WV, the son of the late Frank Frederick and Grace Florence Suter Schafer.

       He was a US Army veteran of WWII, 29th Field Artillery 4th Division Infantry, landed on Utah Beach on D Day and fought on the front lines for 1 ˝ years determining coordinates for tanks. He was, a retired assistant VP of 34 years for the First National Bank of Powhatan Pt. a member of the First Church of God, Duffy, OH, and American Legion Post #87 of Woodsfield.

       In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Freda E. Smith Schafer; two brothers, Otto Franklin Schafer, Francis Lee Schafer; a sister; Leona Mae Harrison; and a son-in-law, Loren Romick.

       Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Ann (Carl) Jackson of Westerville, OH, Kathy (Kyle) Romick of Milford, OH, and Charlotte Romick of Sardis, OH,; seven grandchildren, April (Eric) Henricks, Hilary (Joshua) McCain, Chelsey (Michael) McGuire, Caitlin Romick, Elijah Romick, Olivia and Carson Romick, four great- grandchildren, Bjorn, Phoebe, Norman and Chloe Henricks; and several nieces and nephews.

       Family will receive friends on Thursday from 11am until time of service at 1:00 pm at Grisell Funeral Home 125 Clarinda Dr. Clarington, OH, with Pastor Cathy Harman officiating.

       Interment will follow in Mount Vernon Cemetery Clarington, OH with military graveside services.

Schnegg, Norma J. Schnegg, nee Highman

       Norma J. Schnegg, 75, of Clarington, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017 in Davis Medical Center, Elkins, West Virginia.

       She was born Nov. 2, 1941 in Woodsfield, a daughter of the late Glenn and Edna Hoover Highman.

       She was a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ.

       In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Schnegg.

       Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Ronald Schnegg; two sons, Douglas (Darla) Schnegg, of Hannibal, and Brian (Jenny) Schnegg, of Clarington; three daughters, Sherrie (Michael) McGinnis of Beallsville, Lisa (Lewis) Matz, of Woodsfield, and   Kristy (Steve) Beisel, of Clarington; one sister, Susan (Melvin) Truex, of Belmont, West Virginia; nine grandchildren and one great grandson.

Private services were held at the convenience of the family at Grisell Funeral Home, Clarington. Pastor Darla Schnegg officiated.

       Interment followed in Clarington Cemetery.

 

Schraber, John Fredrick Schraber

       John (Jack) Fredrick Schaber, age 89, of Woodsfield, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017, at the Arbors at Woodsfield.

       He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, Aug. 27, 1927, a son of the late Fred and Ethel McCormick Schaber.

       John retired from Ormet Corporation in 1990 where he worked at office manager and payroll master. He was a Merchant Marine during World War II, and also a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Switzerland of Ohio Country Club and the Explorers Club.

       He was preceded in death by his wife Doris Merckle Schaber in Aug. 7, 2009.

       He is survived by two sons, Matt Schaber and his wife Kim January Schaber, of Woodsfield, and John Mark Schaber, of Columbus; one sister, Betty Ann Meyers, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Vanessa (Dave) Reddick, of Mars, Pennsylvania, and their son, Jaxon, Nathaniel Schaber, of Lewisville, and Sarah Schaber, of Toledo, and her son Noah. 

       There will be no visitation.

       Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

       Arrangements were provided by Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, 100 S. Paul St., Woodsfield, Ohio.

Shipp, Jacquelyn Shipp, nee Turner

       Jacquelyn (Jackie) Turner Shipp, age 76, of Woodsfield, passed away Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, at Barnesville Hospital, Barnesville.

       She was born July 16, 1941, in Martins Ferry, a daughter of the late Denzel R. and Wilda Mae Egger Turner.

       She was a secretary for several chemical plants in Moundsville, West Virginia.

       She is survived by her husband, Richard A. Shipp, of Woodsfield; stepson, Rick Shipp, of Woodsfield; and stepdaughter, Pamela (Joe) Whitehead, of Fort Myers, Florida; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

       Friends were received until the time of funeral service Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, 100 S. Paul St., Woodsfield, with Rev. David Cottrell officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery Woodsfield.

Shreves, Rita Dawn Shreves, nee Schultz

       Life well lived. That’s our Mom, Rita Dawn Shreves. She recently cast off her earthly moorings and took her place amongst the stars, February 3, 2017 at her estate in Cameron, OH. She was surrounded by family including her devoted husband of 56 years, Richard L. Shreves.

       Born in the pale dawn of August 25, 1927 in Wheeling, WV to the late Jessie (Woods) Schultz and Fredrick W. Schultz. Rita was a member of the Wolf Clan of the Cherokee Nation. She took great pride in her Native American roots.

       Rita was a talented individual as an accomplished singer performing with several big bands of the ‘40s, including Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey. A gifted dancer she once danced with Fred Astaire. Rita was also an accomplished artist and writer, but best of all she was a wonderful Mom.

       She is survived by her husband, Richard L. Shreves, her youngest son, and care giver Shannon Shreves of the home, daughters, Cheryl Crooks of Woodsfield, and Melanie Masi of Winston Salem, NC and son, Francis “Doc” Aubry of Long, SC. Rita was blessed with a plethora of talented grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her canine companion Noel.

       Memorial services were held, Thursday, February 9, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at New Life Church, 146 S. Main St., Woodsfield, OH, followed by a luncheon at Old Cameron Elementary School.

       Betty Smith, age 74, of Sardis, passed away Aug. 25, 2017, at her home.

       She was born March 23, 1943, in Marietta, the daughter of the late Elmer and Mildred Ridgeway Furler.

       She was a farmer, a homemaker and a member of Zion United Church of Christ of Sardis.

       Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Charles Smith; four children, Dave (Holly) Smith and Steve Smith, of Sardis, Judy (Bruce) Jones and Connie (John) Williams, of Woodsfield; four grandchildren, Brooke Jones, Nerissa Smith, Cheyenne Williams and Emily Smith; three brothers, Donald (Myra) Furler, Larry (Luella) Furler and Russell (Shirley) Furler all of Marietta.

       Family received friends Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017, at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 Third St., New Martinsville, where services were held Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, with Rev. Terry Pringle officiating.

       Interment followed in Zion Memorial Garden, Sardis.

Smith, Christine M. Smith, nee Campbell

       Christine M. Smith, age 74, of Clarington, died Monday, July 17, 2017, at her daughter’s home in Bellaire.

       She was born Sept. 28, 1942, in Bellaire, the daughter of the late Robert and Ella Dunfee Campbell.

       She was a homemaker and a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Powhatan Point; and she loved her animals and enjoyed Bunko Club.

       In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two nephews, Michael and Chad Campbell.

       Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Fred Smith; two sons, Robert (Amanda) Smith, of St. Clairsville, and Richard (Kimberlee) Smith, of Woodsfield; a daughter, Lucinda (James) Marling, of Bellaire; three brothers, Ronnie (Louise) Campbell, of W. Bellaire, Tom (Ruth) Campbell, of St. Clairsville, and David (Sally) Campbell, of Bellaire; nine grandchildren; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

       Friends were received Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at Grisell Funeral Home, 125 Clarinda Dr., Clarington.

       Funeral services were held Thursday, July 20, 2017, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 51736 German Ridge Rd., Powhatan Point with Rev. Carla Wobschall officiating.

       Interment was in St. John’s Church Cemetery, Powhatan.

Smith, Doris Beryl Smith, nee Christman

        Doris Beryl Smith, age 93, of Woodsfield, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2017, at Arbors at Woodsfield.

        She was born in Woodsfield, on June 18, 1923, a daughter of the late Ronald “Dick” and Irene Withers Christman.

        She was a member of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.  She was a co-owner with her husband Paul of Smith Cleaners in Woodsfield. She worked for many years in the Monroe County’s Auditor’s office and as a secretary for Judge Pfalzgraf.  

        In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Smith; a son, Thomas Smith; one grandson, Steven Paul Smith; three brothers, Ronald Christman, MD, Burris and Jack Christman; and two sisters, Lorna Good and Zola Slawter.

        She is survived by two brothers, Sam Christman ,of Woodsfield, and Ray Christman, of Alabama

        Private Graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at Oaklawn Cemetery is Woodsfield, Ohio.

       Judy Smith, 70, of Beallsville, Ohio died Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at her home. She was born June 25, 1946 in Wheeling, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Glenn and Lucille Kanzigg Reed. Judy was a member of the Beallsville First Christian Church.

       Surviving are her loving husband of 53 years, John Smith and their five children, Rhonda Crawford of Dover, Ohio, Renee (Shawn) Crum, John (Michele) Smith, Nicole (Alan) Boughner, and Chana (Steve) Johnson, all of Beallsville; one brother, Bob (Debbie) Reed of Beallsville; two sisters, Hilda (Fred) Ulrich of Lewisville, and Barb (Coleman) Abrigg of Beallsville; 20 grandchildren, Cassie, Michael, Matt, Carrie, Brett, Sydney, Trystan, Tyler, Derek, Pazeley, Johnny, Chad, Dawson, Trey, Hannah, Madison, Reed, Drake, Braden, and Owen; 21 great-grandchildren, Kade, Lane, Max, Miles, Jaxon, Colton, Alyssa, Aiden, Riley, Carly, Dominic, Brayden, Chandler, Journey, Brynlee, Brittyn, Lochlyn, Bryce, Kallie, Kade, and Madison; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

       Visitation was held February 2 at the Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville where funeral services were conducted February 3. Interment followed in Beallsville Cemetery. Sole, Floyd L. Sole, Jr.

       Floyd L. Sole, Jr., 88 of Clarington, formerly of Middlebourne, departed this life Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017, in the Arbors of Woodsfield.

       He was born Feb. 20, 1929, in Wheeling, West Virginia, the son of the late Floyd L. and Claudia Weekley Sole.

       Floyd was a retired employee of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a United States Naval veteran and he attended the Church of Christ in Cameron.

       In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Ray Stevens and Loren Archer.

       Floyd is survived by three sisters, Dorothy Stevens, of Weirton, West Virginia, Gertie Archer, of Middlebourne, and Janice Bonner and her husband David, of Middlebourne; and several nieces and nephews.

       Family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at Furbee Funeral Home, Middlebourne, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017,  with Brian McKee officiating. Interment will be in Middlebourne Cemetery.

Spence, Ruth V. Spence, nee Carpenter

          Ruth V. Spence, 97, of Caldwell, Ohio (formerly of Summerfield and Norwich, Ohio) passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at the Summit Acres Nursing Home, Caldwell, Ohio.

          She was born near Calais, Ohio on November 1, 1919 a daughter of the late Oliver J. and Civilla Carpenter.

          Ruth was a homemaker; a1937 graduate of the former Summerfield High School, Summerfield, Ohio; and was a member of the East Union United Methodist Church, East Union, Ohio. She did war work during World War II, and later worked in social work and retail at Grays in Caldwell, Ohio. On her 90th birthday she dressed in leather and rode on a Harley Davidson motorcycle.  Ruth was perhaps best known for her quilting. She taught many people how to quilt and made master pieces for many others.  The last several years of her life she was active in Quilts of Valor and made nearly 100 quilts for that program. After moving to Summit Acres, Ruth made quilts for fellow residents and employees. Ruth excelled at making personal connections with the people she met and could tell you how their lives intertwined with hers.

          In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James P. Spence (whom she married on December 20, 1937) who died on April 26, 1994;  daughter, Kay; a sister, Virginia; six brothers, John Wesley, Morrie, Fern, Carson "Jack", Monoah "Noah", David, J. Oliver "Whitey" Carpenter, and Jimmy Wells.

          Ruth is survived by her sister, Mary Tilton of Caldwell, Ohio, sister-in-law Virginia Carpenter of Gahanna, Ohio; son-in-law Lynn Elliott and his wife Judy of New Concord, Ohio; granddaughters, Rachel (J) Hodge, Rebecca Elliott, Deborah Elliott, Stacey (Matt) Russell; Stephanie (Mike) Hess; great grandchildren, Elaina Kay and Braden Hodge, Michael Komarov, Madeline Russell and Elizabeth Hess; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

          Per her wishes a caring cremation has taken place and no calling hours will be observed. A private burial will be held at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, near Carlisle, Ohio where Ruth will be laid to rest next to her husband. The family will hold a Celebration of Life service at a time to be announced, at College Drive Presbyterian Church, New Concord, Ohio and invites friends to bring a special picture or quilt Ruth made to share. Stackpole, Raymond Stackpole

       Raymond Stackpole, 83, of Sardis, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, in Wetzel County Hospital.

       He was born July 19, 1934, in Porters Falls, West Virginia, the son of the late Richard Burl and Amelia Elizabeth Barr Stackpole.

       He was a retired millwright from Ormet and a member of the Living Water Baptist Church in Sardis.

       In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dallas and Russell Stackpole; and two sisters, Lula Miller and Ruby Pruitt.

       Survivors include a son, Michael Stackpole; a daughter, Tamara (Frank) Ellis; grandchildren, Scotty Stackpole, Shawn (Ashley) Stackpole, Chad (Betsy) Stackpole, Kyle Ellis, Chelsea (Justin) Ellis Bone, Mike, Cheyenne, and Krista Stackpole; a sister, Anna Belle Bohrer; and nine great-grandchildren.

       Family received friends until the time of the memorial service Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017, at Living Water Baptist Church, 37453 5th Ave., Sardis.

Staley, Helen Julia Staley, nee Polczyk

        Mass of Christian Burial for Helen Julia (Polczyk) Staley, 93, of Fairport Harbor, will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 12th at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Parish, 316 Fifth Street, Fairport Harbor, OH.

        Helen was born December 24, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan to John Joseph and Julia (Mahacz) Polczyk, and passed away July 5, 2017 at her residence.

        Helen grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Sault Ste. Marie and DeTour. Her mother died when she was three, and she often spoke of how fortunate those who had their mothers were and how much she missed her own. She graduated from DeTour High School in 1941 and was Salutorian of her class, and she was also on the high school basketball team. She graduated from Bay City Business College with the Class of 1942. She then took a position with the government, working for the Federal Security Agency War Manpower Commission Procurement and Assignment Service in Bay City. She later moved to Ohio to be near her sister Joanna (“Jennie”) and married Friend “John” Staley, Jr. on November 8, 1948 at St. Anthony’s of Fairport Harbor. She resided in Fairport Harbor since 1948. She was devoted to her Catholic Faith and a member of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Fairport Harbor. Helen was a homemaker, who dearly loved her family and home. She was devoted to her family and was always there for her husband “John” (who died in 2001), sister “Jennie" Wayner; children, James “Jimmy” (who died in 1964 of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma), Kathleen (Dan) and John Michael (Anita), and grandchildren Jordan, Emma, and Lily. Her family adored her. Her granddaughters spent countless hours with her, learning to play Poker and Pinochle, watching Charmed and Super Nanny, dancing in the kitchen to Conway Twitty’s Don’t Cry Joni, eating lots of Little Debbie’s, and going to Mass. Helen enjoyed reading, baking, playing cards and Bingo, and her yearly Christmas Eve overnight visit at her son's house. She was an avid tennis and ice skating fan. She loved to try her luck with scratch-off lottery tickets and enjoyed casino trips with her beloved sister “Jennie” and nieces Diane and Heidi. Helen also had a fondness for cats and loved her daily visits from Benji, the neighbor’s cat. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. 

        She is survived by her son, John Michael (Anita) Staley of Mentor; daughter, Kathleen (Dan) Wakkila of Leroy Township; grandchildren, Jordan, Emma and Lily Staley; sister-in-law, Betty “ Staley” Oliver of Cohutta, GA; niece, Becky (Polczyk) Meinke of Curtice, OH; nephews, Robert Wayner, Bud Wayner and Donald Wayner (Diane), and great-niece Heidi Wayner.

        Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Friend “John” Staley Jr.; son, James Joseph; parents; brother, Joseph; sister, Joanna “Jennie” Wayner; brother-in-law, John Wayner; sister-in-law, Virginia Polczyk; nephew, Jeffrey Polczyk, and great-niece Laura Wayner Ruvalcaba. Mother and father- in- law; Friend and Mary Jane (McCormick) Staley ; brother-in-laws, Russell, Roy “Red”, Calvin (Ota), Ross (Reba) and Robert Oliver; sister-in-laws, Grace (Arze) Stackpole, Ola ( Earl Cochran), (David Sams), Virginia (Guy Stackpole), (Ray Brenzene), Donna ( John) Siebel, and Myrtle (Lonnie) Balwanz.  Her deceased feline family members; Mew Mew, Tiger, Cleo, and Kitty Cat.

        The family suggests contributions in Helen’s memory to St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Fairport Harbor.

 

Steavenson, Michael Edward Steavenson

       Michael Edward Steavenson, age 53, of Woodsfield, passed away Monday, July 10, 2017, at Ohio State Medical Center, Columbus.

       He was born May 9, 1964 in Georgia.

       He was a self-employed contractor and loved to play drums.

       Survivors include his wife, Penni Darrah, and five children, Windy Darrah, of Wheeling, West Virginia, and Rebecka Darrah, Laken Darrah, Leslie Steavenson and Faith Steavenson, all of Woodsfield.

       Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Stephens, Curtis L. Stephens

       Curtis (Sharkey) L. Stephens, age 81, of Woodsfield, passed away Friday, March 17, 2017, at the Arbors at Woodsfield.

       He was born in Barnesville, on January 7, 1936, a son of the late George and Ida Evans Stephens.

       He was a 1954 graduate of Barnesville High School, and retired from the Village of Woodsfield Light Plant with 32 years of service. He was an avid harness racing fan.

       In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne and Harold Stephens.

       He is survived by his wife Judy Arick Stephens, of Woodsfield; three sons, Jeffrey Stephens, of Woodsfield, Roger (Holly Roth) Stephens, of Strasburg, and David (Kristal) Stephens, of Woodsfield; one brother, Marvin (Dorothy) Stephens, of Piedmont; four grandchildren, Jordan (Alesa) Stephens, Trent Stephens, Kayley Stephens and Lydia Stephens; one great-grandson, David Stephens; and one step-great-granddaughter, Olivia Fisher.

       Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 20, 2017, at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, 100 S. Paul St., Woodsfield, and from noon until time of funeral service at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2017, with Rev. David Cottrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.

       Judy Ann Stewart, age 67, of Woodsfield, Ohio formerly of Powhatan Point, Ohio passed away Saturday October 14, 2017 at the Arbors at Woodsfield. She was born in Bellaire, Ohio, January 10, 1950, a daughter of the late Oscar and Jean Rea Stewart.

       In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother Jerry Stewart.

       She is survived by one sister; Phyllis (Randy) Monahan of Woodsfield; two brothers, Harold (Wendy) Stewart of Powhatan Point, Ohio and David Stewart of Panama City, Florida, and several nieces and nephews. Though we miss her, we find comfort knowing she is in a place of happiness and a pain-free life so long overdue. Judy is home.

Stimpert, Elroy J. Stimpert

       Elroy J. Stimpert, 97, of Sebring, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at Crandall Medical Center.

       Mr. Stimpert was born in Miltonsburg, on February 2, 1920, the son of the late Roy and Elizabeth (Kaufman) Stimpert.

       He was a graduate of The Ohio State University, Class of 1940, and a member of the Tower Club; a U.S. Army veteran from 1942-1945, serving at the rank of sergeant; and worked for the USDA as an assistant administrator. Elroy was a member of the Bethel Friends Church in Poland, served as a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Poland Optimist Club and was active in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program where he received recognition as one of the longest matches between Big and Little Brother.

       Survivors include his daughter, Candace (Jerry) King, of Salem; a son, James Stimpert, of Baltimore, Maryland; two grandchildren Andrew (Judy) King and Rachel (Chad) Allen; and four great-grandchildren, Preston, Gracelyn, Selah and Kendall.

       Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Mae (Wade) Stimpert on June 6, 2012.

       Calling hours will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2017, at Gednetz Ruzek-Brown Funeral Home in Sebring. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 25, 2017, at the Bethel Friends Church in Poland. There will also be visitation held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017, at the church. Burial will take place at Green Haven Cemetery in Canfield.

          Ida Mae Stoffel, 83, of Lower Salem, Ohio (Lebanon Community) passed away Monday, January 30, 2017 at her home.

          She was born near Lebanon, Ohio on September 26, 1933 a daughter of the late Paul and Clara Nalley Cline.

          She was a cook at the former Bethel Elementary School, Marr, Ohio; a former hairdresser and instructor at the former Valley Beauty School, Marietta, Ohio. Ida Mae also owned and operated her own beauty shop in Lebanon, Ohio. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Masterton Chapter #584, Lebanon, Ohio.

          She enjoyed being around her family especially spending time with her grandchildren.

          In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Dean Stoffel on April 21, 1995, and a sister, Faye Boyde.

          Surviving are one daughter, Vicki (Michael) Kendall of Lower Salem, Ohio; one son, Paul "Rick" (Debbie) Stoffel of Marietta, Ohio; two sisters, Irene Clift of Caldwell, Ohio, Vera Marshall of Canton, Ohio; one brother, Robert Cline of Lower Salem, Ohio; seven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; thirteen great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

        Helen Jane (Ackerman) Strickling, age 82, of Woodsfield, passed away peacefully shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2017, under Hospice care at Westwood Place Assisted Living.

        She was born Nov. 1, 1934, in Woodsfield, the daughter of the late William and Jessie Ackerman.

        She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Junior Ward Strickling; two sisters, Eloise Smith and Donna Ruth Simpson; and two brothers, Bill Ackerman and Harold Ackerman.

        She was a member of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.

        She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Rick) Ricer, of Loveland; three sons, Robert (Linda) Strickling, of Spring, Texas, Steven Strickling, of San Bernadino, California and Richard (Debra) Strickling, of Reynoldsburg; six grandchildren; two great-granddaughter; and her constant feline companion of 16 years, Butter. She is much loved and will be forever remembered.

        She was very proud of the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren, and was considered “Mom” or “Grandma” to many children in Woodsfield and beyond.

        Jane touched the hearts and lives of everyone she encountered. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by family and friends.

        The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Westwood Assisted Living for all of their care and compassion, and to the community for their kindness and support.

He lived several years in Florida and enjoyed the water, boating and fishing.

       He is survived by 1 son Donald Tarman of Port Charlotte, FL; 1 daughter Cheri Holland of Florida; 2 brothers Roy (Shirley) Tarman of Port Charlotte and Dennis Tarman of Byesville, OH. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and friends.

       She was a homemaker and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, New Martinsville.

       In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roger William Tenley.

       John Frederick Thomas, Sr., 85, formerly of Alledonia, died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017, at his home near New Martinsville, West Virginia.

       He was born Feb. 15, 1931, in York, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Russell, Sr. and Lottie Eberle Thomas.

       John was a proud US Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict, a retired journeyman machinist with Tri-State Machine in Wheeling, West Virginia, a member of the Armstrong Mills United Methodist Church, and a lifetime member of VFW Post 8548, Madison.

       In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Thomas, Jr. and a sister, Mae Lynch.

       Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 52 years, Johanna Witulski Thomas; their children, Jennifer (Robert) Long, of Clarington, John "Rick" (Susan) Thomas, Jr., of New Martinsville, Joseph (Joy) Thomas, of Miltonsburg, and Jill Thomas (Joseph Hubbard), of Coolville; his first wife, Mary and their children; Steve (Geri), Mark (Cindy), Patricia (Chuck) and Rhonda, all of Omaha, Nebraska; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many beloved nieces and nephews; also many, many friends.

       Visitation and funeral services were held Feb. 18, 2017, at the Harper Funeral Home with full military honors presented by American Legion Post 768.

       Randy Merle “Dude” Thornberry, 69, of Beallsville, passed away Monday, Sept. 25, 2017.

       He was born on March 13, 1948, in Beallsville, the oldest son of Ruth Riley Thornberry and the late Hollis “Tume” Thornberry.

       Randy attended Buckeye Boys State in 1965 and graduated from Beallsville High School in 1966 where he excelled in basketball and track. Randy was a true Blue Devil at heart. He enjoyed attending and supporting all of the athletic programs either from the bleachers or by assisting the coaching staff. He could often be seen out in the public proudly wearing his BHS blue. He was an avid Cleveland Indians and Ohio State fan. Randy attended West Liberty State College and was an employee of the former North American Coal Company #5 mine. His interests included family, music, hunting, fishing and outdoor activities. He was a member of the Beallsville Sportsman's Club.

       On Aug. 16,1968, he married Mary Adams Thornberry, his wife of 49 years. Randy was a devoted, loving father and grandfather, and a dear friend to all who knew him. He is survived by his mother, Ruth; wife, Mary; son, Travis (Christan) Thornberry; daughter, Erica, (Eric) Cramer; and son-in-law, Brian Isaly, all of Beallsville; five grandchildren Kaylan, Trent, Tyler, Lexi and Emery; four great-grandchildren, Karly, Brooklynn, Brady and Claudia; two brothers, Bradley (Karen) Thornberry and Jeffrey (Theresa) Thornberry; and several nieces and nephews.

       Preceding Randy in death were his father, Hollis; his daughter, Kyla Thornberry Isaly; and a brother, Gregory Allen Thornberry.

       Friends and family were received Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville where funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017, with Brother Wolfe officiating. Burial followed in Beallsville Cemetery.

       Lois Jean Durant Timberlake, 87, of Bridgeport, passed away Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at Westwood Place Senior Living, Woodsfield.

       She was born Sept. 18, 1929, in the home on Laipple Street, Bridgeport, the daughter of the late Coleman Joseph and Ruth Etta Woods Durant Sr.

       By the time she was 16, Lois and her two brothers had lost both parents.

       Committed to family and friends that brought much joy to her life and the lives of others, Lois belonged to several organizations such as the Eastern Star #489 and Ladies Oriental Shrine. Lois’s volunteer work continued throughout her entire life, working with her late husband at the Shriner Hospitals. Her work never went unnoticed in Martins Ferry, where she helped at the Clothes Closet, folding clothes for the needy. Lois continued to help prepare food bags and or baskets for her local community. Along with all these wonderful works, she also helped to make meals for the Sherriff’s and EMS Departments in Woodsfield.

       She was preceded in death by her husband after 37 years of marriage, Arthur W. Timberlake on Oct. 9, 1985, and two younger brothers: Van D. Durant and Coleman J. Durant Jr.; and a wonderful friend and companion for 21 years, Joe Eighme, who also turned her into an avid Ohio State Football Fan.

       She is survived by children, Ardith (Norman) Friend, of Cuyahoga Falls, Candy (Ron) Talbot, of Clarington, Vickie (David) LaMotte, of Payson, Arizona, and Melvin (Lori) Timberlake, of Brilliant; grandchildren, Scott Friend, of Cuyahoga Falls, Kiley Talbot (David) Hammond, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Heather (Talbot) Cox, of Woodsfield, Matt (Olga) LaMotte, of Scottsdale, Arizona, Jeff (Lexy) LaMotte, of Tempe, Arizona, and Ashley Timberlake (Steven Fathbruckner), of Columbus; four great-grandchildren, Travis and Jared Hammond of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Katelyn Cox of Woodsfield, and Patrick LaMotte of Scottsdale, Arizona.

       She attended Zion United Church of Christ, Hannibal.

       In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Trader, and a brother, Dale Gehring.

       Survivors include three sons, Dwight (RoAnn) Trader, of Waterford, Keith Trader, of Woodsfield, and Roger Trader, of Springfield; two grandsons, Isaac and Ben Trader; a brother, Lloyd (Marge) Gehring, of Enon; and a sister-in-law, Yvonne Gehring, of Fairborn.

       Donna P. Travis, age 95, arrived at her home with Jesus Sept. 2, 2017.

       Donna was born July 28, 1922, in New Matamoras, to the late Joseph Ralph and Ava Lorraine (Root) Semon, and was the eldest of four children.

       The farm life never left her memories. On June 7, 1944, she married the love of her life, Roy Edwin Travis, who preceded her in death in 1988. Her life revolved around her four children and her beloved pets, Ivan and Justice, as she embraced the honorable title of housewife.

       Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Travis; her eldest son, Kenneth Travis; half-sister, Mary (Claude) Nash; three brothers, Dick (Elsie) Semon, John Semon, and Bob (Betty) Semon.

       She is survived by children: daughter-in-law, Gayle (Ken) Travis and her son, Chris (Andi) Travis, of North Carolina, and their children, Ryan and Chloe; son Bob, of Louisville, and his sons, Eric, of Florida, and Mike (Jodie) Travis, of Louisville, and their two children, Cole and Charlotte; daughter, Pam (Bob) Stach, with whom she resided in Canton, and their son, Todd (Hillary), of Lexington, and their children, Bailey, Summer and Skylan; daughter, Melissa Marks, of Canton, and her daughter, Cressa Marks, of Canton, and her children, Pryce, Mylahni and baby due in November; Willie Marks, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and his daughter, Alexi; sisters-in-law, Betty Semon, of Westerville, and Janet Travis, of Clintonville, Wisconsin; one step-granddaughter; four step-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

       Donna was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Canton, Ohio. Her faith in Jesus sustained her through many struggles in life and with multiple health issues.

       Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, at Grace Baptist Church, 5050 Middlebranch Ave., Canton, with Rev. David Ryan officiating.        Lola Tremblay, 93, of Beallsville, died Friday, April 14, 2017, in Barnesville Hospital.

       She was born March 1, 1924, in Ozark, a daughter of the late Otto A. and Kate Klug Burkhart.

       Lola was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, near Miltonsburg, American Legion Post 768 Auxiliary, the Tri-State Marine Club Auxiliary, Weirton, West Virginia, also over the years she served as financial clerk for various local organizations. She was retired from the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District where she first worked as secretary in the Beallsville schools and then as clerk/treasurer for the Switzerland of Ohio Local Board of Education. After her retirement, she was elected to the Board of Education.

       In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George on July 7, 2014; a grandson, Timothy Scott Mercer; two brothers, Robert and Nestor Burkhart; and a son-in-law, Bill Rees.

       Visitation and vigil services were held Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at the Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Miltonsburg with Rev. Fr. David Gaydosik presiding. Interment followed in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, near Ozark.

Truex, Leland John Truex

       Leland John Truex, 90, of North Fort Myers, Florida, died Oct. 3, 2017, in Promise Hospital of Fort Myers.

       He was born Oct. 17, 1926, on the family farm near Beallsville, one of seven children born to John and Celeste Pittman Truex.

       Leland was a United States Army Veteran of World War II and he proudly continued to serve his country as a member of the Army and also as commander of the National Guard Unit in Caldwell. He was a life-long member of the Church of Christ, most recently as a member of the North Fort Myers Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six siblings, Glenn Truex, Russell Truex, Ray Truex, William Truex, Dessie Powell and Viola Varner.

       Visitation and funeral services with Minister J.D. Conley officiating were held Oct. 6, 2017, at the Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville. Interment followed in Beallsville Cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post 768.

       Ruth M. Tucker, age 101, passed away at 10:52 a.m.  Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the Arbors Nursing Home, Woodsfield, Ohio.

       Ruth was born May 1, 1915 at Moundsville, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Heber and Annabell Dunlap Yingling. She was a Methodist by faith and was a retired waitress, as well as owning and operating her own restaurant in Woodsfield.

       Ruth was a member of the VFW Post 5303 Ladies Auxiliary, Woodsfield, Ohio serving two years as their president.

       She was preceded in death by her husband William P Tucker, Jr, daughter Normajean Jones, great-grandson Leather Gainey, great-great-granddaughter Kenadi Gainey, sisters Virginia Persinger, Marylee Hamilton, brothers Elmer, Mark, and Raymond Yingling.

       She is survived by her daughter Dorothy (Earl) Anderson of Lewisville, grandchildren Renee (Ralph) Kemper of Woodsfield, Eric (Darcie) Anderson of Lewisville, great-granddaughters Heather Smith of Fairborn, Korah and Klara Anderson of Lewisville, great-great-granddaughter Reygan Wright of Fairborn.

       Friends called at the Watters Funeral Home 35701 State Route 78 West Woodsfield, Ohio on Sunday, January 29, 2017 where funeral services were held on Monday, January 30, 2017 at 11 a.m. with Rev Richard Wilson officiating. Interment was in Holly Memorial Gardens, Colerain, Ohio. VFW Auxiliary services were held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

       John Matthew Turkal, 66, of St. Clairsville, Ohio died February 18, 2017 in Wheeling Hospital.He was born October 22, 1950 in Bellaire, Ohio son of Wilma Mae Paskel Turkal and the late Matthew James Turkal.John was a retired supervisor from Ormet Corporation and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War. He and his wife, Catherine were married in 1972. He enjoyed frequent visits with his children and their families and especially loved spending time with his wonderful grandchildren.

       In addition to his father, John was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry and Roger Turkal.Surviving are his wife, Catherine Ann Preston Turkal; his mother, Mae Turkal of Warnock; a daughter, Angela Dawn (James David) Huston of Tallmadge, Ohio; a son, Matthew George (Kate) Turkal of Fort Wayne, Indiana; three grandchildren, Zachary David Huston, Isaac John Huston and Skylar Catherine Turkal; three brothers, Terry Turkal, Randy (Karen) Turkal both of Warnock and Joe (Sherry) Turkal of Belmont; nieces and nephews.

       Carl Leroy Vanness, 88, of Beallsville, died March 28, 2017, in the Arbors at Woodsfield.

       He was born August 1, 1928, near Cameron, a son of the late William and Lulabelle Palmer Vanness.

       Carl was employed for many years by the former Blaney Sawmill and Lumber Company.

       In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Stacy; four brothers, Russell, Ralph, William and Clarence Vanness; four sisters, Emmie Vanness, Dorothy Phillips, Elsie Vanness and Martha McGinnis.

       Surviving are a son, Lowell Vanness (Channon Hunsicker), of Beallsville; a daughter, Kristi (Jeff) Holiday, of Creston; three granddaughters, Stacy Vanness, of Lower Salem, Tiara Vanness and Brooke Holiday, of Creston; and several nieces and nephews.

       Family and friends were received and funeral services were held with Minister Josh Hetrick officiating, March 30, 2017, at the Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville. Burial followed in Beallsville Cemetery.

       Linda Sue Venham (Bradfield) age 72, of Sardis, OH passed away April 25, 2017 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, WV. She was born January 23, 1945 in Marietta, OH, the daughter of the late Daniel Thelbert Venham and Irene Janette Beck Venham. She was a true Pioneer woman devoted to God, family and friends. A dedicated worker for the Lord in all she did. She cherished all family gatherings and times spent with loved ones. She gave from everything she had, no limits. She loved the homestead and being self supported, loved her gardens, quilting and crocheting.

       In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Terry and Tommy Venham; two sisters, Judy Friend and Mona Antill, and a grandson, Jesse Levi McPeek. Survivors include two sons, Sean Thomas (Paula) Treadway from Culpeper, VA, and Chad Michael (Becky) Treadway of Sardis, OH.; two daughters, Johnna Renee Bradfield from Grayslake, IL and Krista Danielle (Terry) McPeek of Sardis; six grandchildren, Chantelle M. (Evan) Hibschman, Bradley J. McPeek, Wesley A. McPeek, Joel E. Blevins, Marissa R. Treadway and Jena E. Treadway; one great-grand-daughter, Peyton Grace Hibschman and a sister-in-law, Helen Venham of Veto, OH.; and extended family members, Kim and Kevin Weddle.

       In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by her grandma, Lucille Thorn.

       She was born September 1, 1944 in Beallsville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Clarence “Auger” Armann and Hazel Poole Armann.

       She was a former costume department employee of Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL, and a Pentecostal by faith.

       In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nick Pinner Vucelich; five brothers and sisters.

       Surviving are five children, Tresia Toth of Kissimmee, FL, Angela Vucelich Velasco of Kissimmee, FL, Melonie (Paul R. Jr.) Vucelich Masterson of Winter Garden, FL, Sonya Vucelich Vargas of Kissimmee, FL, and Larry (Treni) Vucelich of Powhatan Point; brother, Charles Armann of Powhatan Point; sister, Mildred Burch of Beallsville; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild.

       Ronald C. “Rod” Watters, 87, of Woodsfield, Ohio passed away Friday, April 28, 2017 at his home.

       He was born in Wayne, Ohio on July 18, 1929 a son of the late Chalmer and Vanda Clapper Watters.

       He was a former co-owner of Marple & Watters Sohio Service Station for 21 years and retired owner of Watters Oil Well Service. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War. He was a charter member of the V.F.W. Post 5303, Woodsfield, Ohio; a 60 year member of Monroe Lodge #189 F. & A.M., Woodsfield, Ohio and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #2247, Woodsfield, Ohio.

       He enjoyed pumping his oil wells and watching his grandson playing baseball.

       In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gary L. Watters and a sister, Gladine Hoiles, twin sisters, Zelda and Zelma Watters.

Surviving are his wife, Caroline Haffner Watters whom he married on January 27, 1979; two sons, Ryan (Cecile) Watters of Woodsfield, Ohio, Bruce A. Watters, his companion Jessica Lumbatis and her son Ashton of Jerusalem, Ohio; one sister, Joyce Marple of Woodsfield, Ohio; three grandchildren, Kara Watters and fiancé Alex Cork, Brayden Watters, Braxten Watters; five nephews; former daughter-in-law, Joy Watters of Woodsfield Ohio; and special family friends, Adam, Tiffany, and Abbi Hesson.

       Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, 37501 State Route 78 West, Woodsfield, Ohio from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2017 where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2017 with Chaplain Herb Alexander of Medi Home Hospice officiating.           She was a former factory worker and was a former caregiver. She enjoyed horses, her dogs and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

          In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert Wayne; four sisters, Wanda Polk, Ruthie Ward, Jean Ruhoff, and Pat Voshall; and a brother.

          Surviving are five daughters, Karen, Linda, Sandy, Donna, and Mabel; four sons, Tony, Danny, Mark, and Ed; twenty nine grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.

          There will be no visitation or service.

          Interment will be held at the convenience of the family at the Stafford Cemetery, Stafford, Ohio.

       Charles Edwin “Ed” Weber, age 64, of Woodsfield, Ohio, passed into his eternal rest on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Arbors at Nursing Home, Woodsfield, OH.

       Ed was born on August 1st, 1952 in Woodsfield, Ohio, to the late Urban “Midge” and Jean (Westerman) Weber.

       Ed was a Graduate of The Ohio State University, and was a dry wall finisher in the Columbus, Ohio area.

       He was preceded in death by his parents.

       Ed is survived by partner Vickie (Pierce) Weber of Woodsfield; brother Bill (Donna) Weber of Jerusalem; two daughters, Jennifer (Jeff) Wise of Woodsfield and Carly Evans and fiancée Brandon Stambaugh of Mt. Vernon; aunt Elizabeth Weber of Woodsfield; grandsons Ethan, Corbin and Brody Wise of Woodsfield and Jeremy and Carson Evans of Galena, OH, and numerous family and friends.

        Ruth J. Weber, 91, of Marietta, (formerly of Lewisville) passed away Friday, June 9, 2017, at Hannah's House, Marietta.

        She was born near Lebanon, on March 22, 1926, a daughter of the late Charles W. and Emma L. Kilzer Ridgway.

        She attended grade school at Harriettsville, and graduated in 1943 from Elk Rural High School in Noble County. She was a former billing clerk for the Ohio Bell Telephone Company during World Ware II. She was a member of the former Buchanan Presbyterian Church and currently a member of the Woodsfield Presbyterian Church, Woodsfield; a 50-year member and former secretary of the former Huffman Grange and lifetime member of the Monroe County Historical Society. Ruth was a full-time mother and homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, reading, planting flowers, church history research and most especially her family.

        In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis J. Weber, on December 3, 2006; a son, Delvin Edward Weber; and a sister, Corrine E. Ridgway.

        Surviving are one daughter, Brenda (Bill) Rice, of Marietta; one son, Kevin Weber of Marietta; four grandchildren, Stacy Lee, Jessica Anderson, Kimberly Weber and Zachary Mick; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

        Friends will be received from 11 a.m. until the time of service Monday, June 12, 2017, at the Watters Funeral Home, 37501 S.R. 78 West, Woodsfield, with Rev. Susan Lehosky officiating. Burial will follow in the Buchanan Cemetery near Lewisville.

Weddle-Cleveland, Sara Mae, nee Petty

       Sara Mae (Petty) Weddle-Cleveland, age 86, died Saturday, April 1, 2017, at 3:45 a.m. at Lost Creek Care Center, Lima.

       She was born on May 16, 1930, in Wooster, to Ralph and Mildred (Rosenlieb) Petty and they preceded her in death.

       On May 29, 1948, she married Samuel E. Weddle, who died on March 6, 1995. On October 26, 2007, she married Floyd L. Cleveland and he survives in Harrod.

       Sara was a beautician and she owned and operated Sara’s Beauty Shop in Harrod. She was a member of the Maysville United Methodist Church of Maysville. She was a graduate of Fredrick s Beauty College in Lima.

       Also surviving are three daughters: Marilyn (Jim) Williams, of Harrod, Beverly (David) Contris, of Goldsboro, North Carolina, and Leesa (Dan Jones) Robb of Dearborn, Missouri; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Raymond Petty, of Woodsfield.

       She was preceded in death by a son, David E. Weddle; a brother, Charles Fredrick Petty; a sister, Glenda Lorhi; and a grandson, David Emerson Weddle.

Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada with Pastor Brandon Wireman officiating. Burial will be in LaFayette Cemetery, LaFayette.

       Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 3, 2017, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Ada and until the time of service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

       Ronald Lee Wiggins, 73, of Northport, AL, passed away Sunday, May 7, 2017, from complications following a stroke at DCH Regional Medical Center. A memorial service was held Saturday, May 13, 2017 with Reverend Jimmy Garner officiating.

       He was born in New Martinsville, WV, February 8, 1944, the only son of the late Raymond Eugene and Virginia Helen (Ickes) Wiggins. All former residents of Clarington, Ohio.

       Ron graduated from River High School, class of 1962. He was a former employee of Conalco. He worked at Quarto #7 mine from 1975 until 1984. He left Clarington in 1984 and lived in Cottondale, AL working for Jim Walters mines. He moved to Kingsport, TN, working as an underground service engineer for American Longwall. Later moved to Tuscaloosa, AL, as an underground engineer for American Longwall/Joy Global, retiring in 2007.

       He was a veteran of the United States Army Reserves.

       Ron was a member of Clarington Masonic Lodge #597 serving as Worshipful Master in 1978. He was also a member of Claringon OES #533, serving as Worthy Patron in 1980 and 1981. He was a 32nd degree Mason and the Osiris Shrine in Wheeling, WV.

       He was married to Pamela Liniger in 1966 of Clarington, Ohio. The marriage ended in divorce in 1985.

       Ron is survived by his former wife, Pamela Liniger Wiggins Burlingame, of New Martinsville, WV; a son John Arthur (Lisa Marie) of Phoenix, Arizona; one sister Linda Kay Wiggins (Paul) Nelson of Clearwater, Florida; and a very special nephew Randy (Kara) Liniger of Mesa, Arizona. Several nieces and nephews.

       JoAnn Williams, 59, of Sardis, died Saturday, June 24, 2017, in Paden City, West Virginia, in the care of Mary Ellen Lewis.

       She was born May 14, 1958, in Glen Dale, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Jack Williams and Patricia Johnson McPeek.

       She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents, a half-sister, a niece and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

       Survivors include five children, which she mentored and raised as her own, Adam and Joseph Lewis, of Paden City, West Virginia; Cassie, Kayla and Carrie Gavula, of Sardis; two dogs, Baby Girl and Chyenne; two brothers, Daniel (Connie) Greathouse, of Boonsboro, Maryland, and Scott (Racheal) Williams, of Moundsville, West Virginia; several nieces and nephews and extended family members.

            Everette Williamson, 88, of Woodsfield, Ohio passed away Monday, April, 10, 2017 at the Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, West Virginia.

            He was born in Hartford, Tennessee on April 18, 1928 a son of the late Jake and Della Bennett Williamson.

            Everette in his earlier years worked on farms with his family in Tennessee and was nicknamed "Wid." He formerly worked at a saw mill in Walland, Tennessee, then for the Alcoa Corporation in Alcoa, Tennessee after which he moved his family to Ohio, where he worked for the Ormet Corporation for more than 36 years where he was nicknamed "Bull Moose."  Everette also served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church, Woodsfield, Ohio.

            After retirement he worked for an oil and gas company where he could enjoy the outdoors and had the freedom to make his own schedule. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading the Bible, and western novels. He loved to tell stories of his time in Alcoa and at Ormet, especially his memories of being raised in Tennessee. He was a strong yet gentle southern gentleman who followed Christ in word and deed without judgment of others.

            In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Tommy, Rhoda, Cora, Dorothy, Sally, Edward, and Dolly.

            Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Merle Huskey Williamson of the home; two daughters, Lois (Walter) Starr of Lewisville, Ohio, Connie (Lars) Hansen of Colerain, Ohio; one son, Bill (Sue) Williamson of Blue Rock, Ohio; one brother, John Williamson of Walland, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Amy Figel, Beth Drum, Kelly (Andy) Riley, Betsy (Christian) Yates, Kristy (Jim) Ritchie, Elijah (Afsar) Ray; and sixteen great grandchildren.

            Friends will be received at the First Baptist Church, 114 North Paul Street, Woodsfield, Ohio from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 13, 2017 with Pastor T.J. Milan officiating. Burial will follow in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield, Ohio.

       Terry L. Willis, 70, of Cambridge, died Friday (April 7, 2017).

       Terry was born March 23, 1947 in Cambridge, son of the late Charles Willis and Irma (Wise) Willis.

       Mr. Willis worked as an intake clerk at the former State Hospital. He was a member of the Ninth Street Methodist Church, First Families of Guernsey and Belmont Counties, a Life Member of V.F.W. Post 3760 of Byesville, Disabled American Veterans and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.

       In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother; Glenn David Willis.

       He is survived by two sons, Brett (Kelley) Willis of Texas and Scott Cantrell of Georgia; two daughters, Amanda (Shawn) Fogle of Illinois and Teresa (Kevin) Perkins of Florida; a sister, Marsha (Ron) Scott of Cambridge; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

       Visitation will be Wednesday, April 12, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. at the Northwood Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel. Services will be at 11 a.m. conducted by Jim Gibson. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council. Burial will follow in Northwood Cemetery.

          He was born in Barnesville, Ohio on September 17, 1972 a son of Norma Wetzel Wilson Adams who survives of Woodsfield, Ohio and the late Elmer Wilson Sr.

          He was an oil field laborer; protestant by faith; auxiliary member of the V.F.W. Post 5303, Woodsfield, Ohio; and the Fraternal Order of Eagle Post 2302, Woodsfield, Ohio. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his kids.

          In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer Wilson Jr. in 2004.

          Surviving in addition to his mother is his step-father Frank Adams of Woodsfield, Ohio; three daughters, Taylor Biedenbach of Wheeling, West Virginia, Izabella Bilderback of Newark, Ohio, Jannie Wilson of Quaker City, Ohio; two sons, Brendan Wilson of Woodsfield, Ohio, Ryan Wilson of Quaker City, Ohio; three sisters, Wilda (Dan) Weyrick of Cameron, West Virginia, Julia Beaver of Cameron, Ohio, Brenda Kay (Chuck) Schwaben of Woodsfield, Ohio; four brothers, Alonzo (Sherry) Wilson of Woodsfield, Ohio, Steve (Sherry) Wilson, of Miltonsburg, Ohio, Jeff (Marsha) Wilson of Woodsfield, Ohio, Greg (Cara) Wilson, of Malaga, Ohio; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

       Rev. Richard M. Wilson, 84, of Jerusalem, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2017, at the Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling, West Virginia.

       He was born in Jerusalem, on June 3, 1932, a son of the late Charles L. and Alice Moore Wilson.

       He was a retired electrician for the Ormet Corporation, Hannibal. He was a Methodist pastor and currently serving the Somerton United Methodist Church, Somerton. He formerly pastored various churches throughout Monroe, Belmont, Washington and Guernsey counties for more than 48 years. He was a member of the Jerusalem United Methodist Church, Jerusalem. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and military policeman, serving during the Korean War. He was a member and former Worshipful Master of the Sunsbury Lodge 362, Beallsville; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Cambridge; was Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio; member of Beallsville Chapter #24 Order of the Eastern Star; past grand patron of the Grand Chapter of Ohio of the Order of Eastern Star; member of the Monroe County Park Board Commission; and trustee of the Jerusalem Cemetery Association.

       Richard was an avid reader and enjoyed watching the news and serving others.

       In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Donald Wilson; a sister-in-law, Jean Wilson; a grandson, Brock Wilson; and a son-in-law, Scott Christy.

       Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Williamson Wilson, whom he married on July 9, 1960; one daughter, Cathy Christy, of Delaware; one son, Brad (Jeri) Wilson, of Jerusalem; two brothers, Robert Wilson, of Marietta, and David Wilson, of Barnesville; six grandchildren, Michaela, Faith and Morgan Christy, Tony (Ashley) Chlon, Nicole (Chad) Kocher and Anessa Wilson; and two great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Kocher and Tiernan Kocher.

       Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 28, 2017, and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 29, 2017, at the Watters Funeral Home, 37501 State Route 78 West, Woodsfield, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017, with Gardner Curtis officiating. Burial will follow in the Jerusalem Cemetery, Jerusalem, with full military graveside services.

Wilson, Shelby Jean Wilson, nee Archer

       Shelby Jean (Archer) Wilson, 79, of Marietta, formerly of Beallsville, passed away on Tuesday, Jan.17, after battling a long illness.

       Jean, as she was known to family and friends, was the wife of Robert J. Wilson, who survives her along with her two sons, Chuck (Michaeleen) Wilson, of Cameron, and Mark (Lisa) Wilson, of Orrville.

       In addition to her sons, Jean is survived by seven grandchildren including Steve Michael of Cameron, Megan (Chris) Bowman, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Lucas Wilson, of Wheeling, West Virginia, along with Katheryn (Jared) Gerber, of Canton, Connor, Trevor and Colton Wilson, of Orrville.

       Jean was born on April 7, 1937, to Arthur and Sylvia Archer in Pursley, West Virginia, the third youngest of the nine children the couple was blessed with. She graduated from Sistersville High School in 1956, and proceeded to run several successful family businesses.

       Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Sylvia, and seven of her siblings, Betty (Paul) Fetty, Stan (Jean) Archer, Loren (Gertie) Archer, Juanita (Robert) Goodfellow, Margaret (Jim) Kirkwood, June (Harold) Dally, and Glen (Judy) Archer.  Surviving in addition to her husband, sons and their families are her youngest brother, Elliott (Carol) Archer and many nieces, nephews.

       Friends were received Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, in Marietta at McClure-Schafer Lankford Funeral Home, 314 Fourth St., and Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, at the Harper Funeral Home at 52728 Ohio Ave. in Beallsville, where funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017. Internment followed at the Jerusalem Cemetery.

Winkler, Herman L. Winkler

       Herman L. Winkler, 91, of Sterling, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster, after a brief illness.

       He was born Nov. 4, 1925, in Sardis, to the late Harry and Henrietta (Michel) Winkler, and married Lucille E. Bachman on April 23, 1949. She preceded him in death in 1994.

       After serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II, Herman moved to Sterling in 1948, and found work as a paper maker for the Packaging Corporation in Rittman. He worked there for 44 years until his retirement in 1987.

       He was a member of the Sterling United Methodist Church, the American Legion in Creston, and Rittman Senior Citizens. He enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids, gardening, playing cards, dominos, and going out to eat.

Herman will always be remembered for continuing the family tradition of “Spaghetti Saturdays,” which his wife, Lucille had started when the grandkids were little and continued until his recent illness.

       Surviving are his sons, James H. (Joan) Winkler and Ronald Winkler, both of Sterling and Thomas A. Winkler of Smithville; his daughter LeAnn (Jack) Glessner of High Point, N.C.; his sister, Margaret Clegg of Clarington; 19 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

       In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and four sisters.

       Funeral services were held Saturday, March 18 at Sterling United Methodist Church.

 

Winland, Pamela L. Winland, nee Franklin

       Pamela L. Winland, age 57, of Woodsfield, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, at the home of her parents in Sarahsville.

       She was born May 4, 1960, in Cambridge, daughter of William C. and Linda L. Moore Franklin.

       She was a 1978 graduate of Shenandoah High School, where she was a member of the Shenandoah Lady Zeps basketball team and the Shenandoah Zeps Marching Band. Pam was employed by as an aide at Summit Acres Nursing Home in Caldwell, by Barnesville Home Health for 10 years, and she was also employed as a dental assistant for Dr. John Cain in Woodsfield for 10 years. She was a member of the Bates Hill Church of Christ, and she loved attending sporting events. Pam dearly loved her family, and she was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren.

       In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Francis E. “Junior” Winland, whom she married Nov. 16, 1985; three children, Derek C. (Kaci) Winland and Danielle S. (Brandon) St. Clair, both of Sarahsville, and Andrew F. (Kelsey) Winland, of Stafford; her siblings, Allen D. (Julie) Franklin, William C. (Jill) Franklin, II, Joey M. (Penny) Franklin, and Patti J. (Adam) Mallett, all of Sarahsville; five grandchildren, Khloee Winland, Karlee Winland, Deekon Winland, Cohen St. Clair and Wren St. Clair, with a new grandchild due in November; her mother-in-law, Arlene Winland, of Lewisville; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

       Friends were received Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East St., Caldwell. The funeral service was observed Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the Bates Hill Church of Christ, 20988 Zep Rd., Sarahsville, with Evangelist Harry Summers officiating. Burial followed at Village View Cemetery.

Winland, Rita C. Winland, nee Kilburn

       Rita C. Winland, long-time resident of Bremen OH, passed away on June 28, 2017 at her current residence in Lebanon, TN. She was 92 years old.


       Rita is survived by her husband of 70 years, Robert; daughter Carol Douglas; son Robert (Robyn) Winland; granddaughters Briana (Chase) Froud and Mikayla Winland; and great-grandchildren Evan and Abigail Froud, all of Lebanon, TN.

She was born July 15, 1924 in Monroe County, OH to Homer and Emma Kilburn. Her parents, brother Clyde, and sister Leona precede her in death. Robert and Rita also had a son David who died shortly after birth.

       Rita and Robert lived at 200 Bartlett Street for 65 years. It was common for Rita to be out on the porch swing, enjoying the weather and greeting people as they walked by. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked at various businesses around town, including a restaurant and a grocery store. Some may remember her as one of the friendly faces at Bremen Electric and Furniture, where she worked for many years. Rita was a long-time member of the Church of Christ, being active in many good works.

He was a retired Millman for Ormet Corporation, and a member of the First Baptist Church, New Martinsville.

       Survivors include his wife, Sara L. Work; a son, Tyrone Work of Huntington, WV, and a brother, Robert Work of New Martinsville.

       Shirley Lee Wright, age 73 of New Martinsville, WV died Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at her home. She was born August 4, 1943 in Sardis, OH the daughter of the late Thomas Edward and Ruth A. Bowen Hendershot. She was a homemaker, a member of the Church of God, and Eagles of Paden City, enjoyed playing bingo and watching wrestling.

       In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Wright, two sisters, Peg Lancaster and Pamela Butler; two brothers, James and Edward Hendershot. Survivors include two daughters, Tonya Slonaker of New Matamoras, OH and Libby Duke of New Martinsville WV., two sons; James Duke of New Martinsville, and Todd Eugene Duke of Paden City; two brothers, Ralph (Mary) Hendershot of Wileyville and Thomas Hendershot of Watertown; three sisters, Rada (Sonny) Wadsworth of New Martinsville, Judith (Ronnie) Boyd and Georgia Ruth Harris both of Mansfield, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

       Joann Yommer, 81, of Lewisville, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017, at Emerald Pointe in Barnesville.

       She was born at Pikeville, Kentucky, on May 13, 1936, a daughter of the late William and Josephine Fleming Craig.

       Joann was a homemaker and attended the Calais Church, Calais. She enjoyed watching humming birds, cooking, quilting, gardening and just loved life in general.

Surviving are her husband, Willard F. Yommer, whom she married on Jan. 2, 1983; four daughters, Janet Maxwell, of Florida, Tammy (Thomas) Johnson, of Dexter City, Crystal (Dale) Mann, of Summerfield, and Shanna Carpenter, of Lewisville; four sons, Alex (Susan) Combs, of Dexter City, Jimmie (Barb) Combs, of Tensed, Idaho, Robert (Michelle) Combs, of Stafford, and Roy (Yvonne) Brinson, of Summerfield; one step-daughter, Elizabeth (Ron) Wilt, of Grantsville, Maryland; two step-sons, Leonard (Deb) Yommer, of Grantsville, Maryland, and Willard D. (Brenda) Yommer, of Grantsville, Maryland; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

       Eva “Lorraine” Zitko, 78, of Moundsville, died Friday, April 21, 2017 in Cameron Continuous Care Center. She was born May 22, 1938 in Moundville. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church; the Moundsville Hospital Auxiliary; and loved her camp at Seneca Lake.

       She was preceded in death by her first husband, Forrest Vernon Martin; her second husband, Anthony Zitko; mother, Leona Gilroy Fink; father, Edwin Hunter; and step-father, Donald Fink. Survivors include a son, Ed (Kelly) Martin of Moundsville; two daughters, Carla (Dave) Strawn of Buckhannon, WV, Diane (John) Young of Glen Dale; a brother, Sidney (Gina) Dunham of Moundsville; five grandchildren, Ashley Strawn of Pittsburgh, PA, Jenny (Tom) Wood of Buckhannon, Beau (Danielle) Martin of Clarington, OH, Luke (Katie) Young of Delaware, OH, Aston Martin of Moundsville; six great-grandchildren, Parker, Emma, Annie, Jack, Jordyn, and Mason; an aunt, Sharlene Koontz of Moundsville.

          Francis L. "Hank" Zwick, 81, of Lewisville, Ohio passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, Cambridge, Ohio.

          He was born near Lewisville, Ohio on September 14, 1935 a son of the late Frank and Irene Smithberger Zwick.

          He was a retired laborer for the Timken Company, Canton, Ohio with 33 years of service.  He was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, Ohio and a member of the former St. Joseph Catholic Church near Lewisville, Ohio.  He was a U.S. Army veteran.  Hank enjoyed spending time with his family, telling jokes, playing cards, loved gardening and hunting.

          In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Mark Zwick; a brother, James Zwick and two sisters, Mary Ring and Lucille Zwick.

          Surviving are his wife, Thelma Fogle Zwick whom he married on October 29, 1960; one daughter, Susan (Charles) Loveless of Massillon, Ohio; one son, Richard (Kim) Zwick of Alliance, Ohio; two sisters, Kathleen Mays of Woodsfield, Ohio, Donna (Roger) Stanley of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Kelly Loveless, Andrew Loveless, Julie Loveless, Kathleen Zwick, Mark Zwick; several nieces and nephews.

          Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, 37501 State Route 78 West, Woodsfield, Ohio from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 3, 2017.

          Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2017 at St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, Ohio with Rev. Fr. David Gaydosik as the celebrant.  Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery near Lewisville, Ohio.

          Vigil services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
