Buchanan Presbyterian Church Cemetery

The Cemetery at the Buchanan Presbyterian Church is among the oldest cemeteries in Monroe County, Ohio.  The oldest readable grave marker is that of Alexander Cochran which dates to 1811.  Six other readable grave markers date between 1811 and 1818.   But these early pioneers do not appear to have been members of the Presbyterian Church.  Judging from the markers that are still readable, there were no burials in this cemetery for the next 21 years.  Only three burials were made in the 1830s and they were all in the year 1839.

According to a history of the Buchanan Church prepared by Ruth Weber, the Presbyterian church that would later become known as the Buchanan Church, was organized in 1826.  But, it was not until 1837 that the congregation began to build the first log church on the site that now includes the Buchanan Cemetery.  This log church was located near the road now known as Ohio Route 78 that runs between Woodsfield and Lewisville and beyond.  This log church, which faced north, was dedicated in July of 1838.  Apparently the first church burials began the following year.

The log church dedicated in 1838 was originally named the Woodsfield Presbyterian Church.  In 1863 this church was renamed the Buchanan Presbyterian Church in honor of William Buchanan who donated the land.  A new Buchanan Church was built to replace the original log church in 1914.  This new church was located across the road (Ohio Route 78) from the old church and cemetery.  It faced south.  It is still in service.

Buchanan Cemetery appears to have begun as a private or community cemetery about 1811.  This private or community cemetery was subsequently subsumed by what is now the Buchanan Cemetery.  In April 2005 the Buchanan Cemetery was charted and inventoried by R.E. Harrington to produce the above chart and the inventory of grave markers that follow.  The curved front of the cemetery on the left follows the curve of Ohio Route 78.  This front arc measures about 210 feet.  The cemetery is about 330 feet in depth and covers about 1.2 acres.  The open area in the cemetery adjacent to Ohio Route 78 is the site where the original log church stood.  The current church stands on the other side Ohio Route 78 almost directly across from the North marker (arrow) at the upper left corner of the chart.  The chart shows the relative location of all of the markers now in the cemetery (in the year 2005).  The cemetery is somewhat pie-shaped.  The rows of graves are not all parallel.  Rather, they form groups of nearly parallel rows that appear to reflect different periods of use.

Below is a table of all stones in the Buchanan Cemetery.  The marker numbers in the first column of the table correspond to the numbers associated with each grave in the chart above.  Every effort has been made to preserve the spelling and order of the inscriptions on each marker.  A key to the symbols, abbreviations and conventions used is given at the end of the table.  A few names have been added in parenthesis to help clarify the identity of the deceased.  As a further service to users of this table, several dates of birth have been calculated and added in brackets.

Elevation, Latitude and Longitude Measurements

Like many cemeteries, the gravesites in the cemeteries of Monroe County, Ohio are gradually being lost.  To help identify the location of ancestors’ graves to descendants, a series of latitude and longitude (L/L) measurements have been made at selected grave markers.  Markers that were measured are those that appeared to be the most substantial and likely to last another few hundred years.  In addition, the corners of the cemetery were labeled A through J on the above chart and L/L measurements were made at these locations.  With these L/L data and the above chart, it will be possible to locate the boundaries of Buchanan Cemetery and the graves of each of the residents even if all of the physical evidence of the cemetery were removed.  Altitude data are also included with each measurement.  Altitude measurements refer to the elevation at ground level.  They are given in feet above sea level and may have errors of 40 or more feet.

For more information about how to use L/L data to locate cemeteries, graves, buildings, etc., click here.
