DEATH

Paul Pfalzgraf

Source: Monroe County Beacon

     Paul Edwin Pfalzgraf, youngest son of Samuel and Emma Mellott Pfalzgraf, was born at Cameron, Ohio, January 16, 1922. He met his death on January 15, 1945, in an airplane accident, while serving as a navigator of a B-24 somewhere in Italy

     He was a graduate of the Woodsfield High School, Class of 1939. He attended Ashland College and Ohio University, Athens. Prior to his service in the Air Corps he was an employee of Hercules Motors Corporation, Canton, Ohio. He enlisted in the service of his country and was sworn in at Cleveland, Ohio, September 2, 1942.  On January 28, 1943, he was sent to Sheppard Field,, Texas, to begin his training as an aviation cadet.

     His vast training took him to various schools: A. and M. College Stillwater, Oklahoma; San Antonio, Texas; Grider Field, Pine Bluff, Arkansas; Independence, Kansas; Harlingen, Texas; Selman Field, Monroe La; and San Marcos, Texas.

     At San Marcos on July 31, 1944, he graduated as Second Lieutenant. Further training was given to the crew at Lemoore, California, and Walla Walla, Washington.

     They landed in Italy some time in November. He was assigned to the fifteenth Air Force to serve as navigator of a Liberator.

     Paul was an ambitious and cheerful good son; always seeing the bright side of life in everything. He obeyed the Gospel and was baptized September 2, 1940.

     He was a member of the Church of Christ at Cameron, and lived an upright and honest life. He made the remark on his last visit home that he had learned one thing, "Do as you wish to be done by and you will have little if any trouble in life." His last letter home which was written on Sunday, January 14th, said he had been to church that day and had heard a very good sermon.

     He is survived by his father and mother, two brothers, Fred of Cameron and John of Canton; two sisters, Mrs. Ray Blachley (or Mary), of Canal Fulton, and Miss Helen of the home; four nephews, three nieces, several aunts and uncles, numerous cousins and a host of friends.

     It is some small consolation to learn that Paul died without long bitter suffering, as he died instantly of the injuries which he received when the stricken ship crashed. He has been laid to rest with full military honors in an American Cemetery in Italy. The exact location of which will be made known to the family when security regulations permit.

     We are thankful for Paul's twenty-three years of a beautiful life. His part in this cruel bitter struggle is finished. "The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, Blessed be the name of the Lord."

He is not really lost to us,

   Though he has passed away,

In memories that never fade

   He'll live for each day.

And in the knowledge that we went

   Bravely, without regret

We know he went to God content

   To do the task he met,

His spirit will live on with those

   Who fought for liberty

And he will be forever young

   Who died to keep men free.

IN MEMORIAM

Rosa Denbow

Source: Monroe County Beacon

     In memory of our wife and mother, Rosa Ann Denbow, who passed away one year ago today, September 24, 1939

Oft and oft are hearts do wonder

   To a grave not far away,

Where they laid our dear mother

   Just one year ago today.

When the evening shades are falling,

   And we are sitting all along;

There comes to us a longing

   If she could only come back home.

Some may think we are not lonely

    When at times they see us smile;

Little do they know the heart aches

   That we suffered all the while.

We think of her in silence

   And no eye can see us weep;

For many a silent tear is shed

   While others are asleep.

No one knows how much we miss her

   Only those who have lost can tell

Of that grief that's borne in silence

   For the one we loved so well.

A happy home we once enjoyed

   How sweet the memory still

Of death has left a loneliness

   The world can never fill.

We mourn for you dear mother

   But not with onward show;

For the hearts that mourn sincerely

   Mourn silently and low.

Dear mother is gone but not forgotten

   Neither will her memory fade

Sweetest thoughts will always linger

   Round the grave where she is laid.

Sleep on, dear mother

   Sleep on and take thy rest

The ones who of you are thinking

   And the ones who loved you best.

One year ago you left us

   One year ago today;

Oh how sad have been the hours,

   How long have been the days.

Dear mother, thou hast left us

    Yes, gone forever more

Thou hast gone to dwell with Jesus

   On that bright and peaceful shore.

Dear Lord we feel so lonely

   Since dear mother went away;

Lord bless us in our weakness;

   And never let us stray.

We can see her with the angels

   In that beautiful land on high,

Standing face to face with Jesus

   Where we'll never say good bye.

                  Husband and daughters

FATAL FIRE

Blachly Family

Source: Columbus Dispatch

     Firemen say explosions that killed four persons Thursday at a propane gas plant could have been touched off by a spark from the automobile in which three of the victims were riding.

     Mrs. Bonnie Blachly, 30 of Hudson and her daughters, Audra, 3, and Paula, 2, were in the automobile passing the Fuelgas Corp. plant in Hudson when the first explosions rocked the area.

     Witnesses reported seeing mist which firemen said could have been caused by gas leaking from a loading dock.

     "I saw a fog enveloping the whole area," said Edward C. Jastromb manager of neighborhood furniture store. Jastromb said he saw the Blachly's Volkswagon "start into the fog. When the car got in the whole fog ignited."

     Robert Blachly, 31 who was in the car with his wife and children, was burned seriously. William A. Jones, operator of a service station a few hundred yards away said he found Blachly sitting on some batteries in the station shortly after the first explosion.

     "He didn't have any clothes on," Jones said, "and he was bent over, not saying anything."

     The fourth person killed was O. C. Williams, 46, service manager of Fuelgas Corp.

     Three Fuelgas buildings were destroyed by the 30 to 40 explosions, and Fire Chief Richard Myers estimated damage at $250,000.

     Police said they believed propane gas leaked from a broken line on truck that had just been filled with gas.

     Firemen said the initial blast could have been touched off by a spark from Blachly's car or by an overhead system in a garage near the loading dock or from some other source.
