Descendants of Joseph Hines

Generation No. 1

1.  JOSEPH1 HINES was born 1774 in Washington County, Pa, and died December 01, 1817 in Stafford, Ohio buried on Clear Fork Creek, his body later moved to Hines Chapel Church"  Cemetery.  He married ELIZABETH COE.  She was born in Virginia, and died December 29, 1861 in Stafford, Ohio buried at Hines Chapel.

Joseph Hines is presumed to be the son of Christian & Catherine Hines. Christian Hines came from Cameron WV the same time as Joseph (1814) and lived close to the Sutherland Methodist Church on Clear Fork.

Joseph Hines, Sr was married to Elizabeth Coe. Elizabeth was the daughter of Philip Coe and Abigail

O’Conner. The Hines family and Coe Family lived in Cameron, WV for a number of years before coming to Ohio. Both families were in Washington County, Pa prior to moving into the panhandle.

devisee:  Isaac, Philip, Pan, Perlina, Jane, Abagail Coe; Rachel     Jones, Elizabeth Hines,
Hanah Holdren, Ethel Cesarel, Sarah Beeler.

Per census search by Kathy Leslie and Robert Coe, it was determined that sisters of Elizabeth Coe,
Hannah Holdren and Phobe Ogle also came to Monroe County, Franklin Township.  Rachel Jones may
have also come.  And Ethel Cesarel is actually Ethel Cecil.

Hannah Coe Holdren’s husband William  was a Justice of Peace and it was before her brother in law she appeared on the third of third day of October 1853 to obtain a pension as widow of Benjamin McVey.

State of Ohio, County of Monroe:  Personally appeared before Wm. Holdren, a Justice of Peace for said County, Margaret McVey, aged 52 years, who made an oath stating that Benjamin McVey, who was a Rev. soldier and
Pensioner of the US died on the 6th day of January, 1848, and Elizabeth McVey who is making application for a
Pension is the widow of said Benjamin McVey .

The following land records were researched  by Jean Whitacre and documented in the book “from the Dennis side”, the following land records were found in Cameron, WV.

April 1, 1811 David Sutherland and Margaret sold to Aden Chambers 108 acres adjoining Joseph Hines on Big Grave Creek. Cameron Station, Va.

1811   (From the Dennis Side)  Joseph Hines purchased 72 acres of land on Big Grove Creek in Ohio County, Virginia in 1811.  This land is now located in the town of Cameron, West Virginia.  There is no listing of a Hines family in Ohio County in the 1810 Federal Census.  There are listings for three families of Humes that could be this family with the name misspelled.  They are located next to David Sutherland in the census.  Joseph Hines bought his land in f1811 from David Sutherland.  David Sutherland was the administrator of his estate when he died in Monroe County, Ohio.    (Per Jean Whittacre book “From the Dennis Side”, since this time Kathy Leslie  has made contact with a descendant of David Sutherland that per the family Bible, David Sutherland’s wife was Margaret Hines, a daughter of Christian and Catherine Hines).

Joseph was one of the first settlers on Clearfork and the first man to die and be buried in Franklin Township.  He was buried on Clear Fork close to the creek, but later his body was dug up and moved to what is now the Hines Chapel Cemetery.  The Hines Chapel was originally the first Methodist Church in Franklin Township built on old Joseph’s property.

He had two sons Joseph and Thomas and five daughters.  His widow later married Benjamin McVey.

Joseph Hines served in the war of 1812.

PHILIP COE & ABIGAIL O’CONNER parents of Elizabeth Coe.

Philip Coe was a soldier in the Revolution. Military service in New York and Pennsylvania towards the end of the Revolution. Shortly after the Revolution he was residing in Washington County, PA. Enlisted in the 5th company, 5th regiment of New York Line, July 29, 1780; transferred to the Invalid Regiment Aug. 10, 1781, where he served until his son, a boy of twelve years was accepted as a substitute. lchabod Coe, Fifer, aged twelve years, enlisted in the 2nd regiment, New York Line, as a substitute for his father; discharged June 10, 1783. Philip Coe, private in Capt. Hill's company of the 2nd New York Regiment, was in the Invalid Regiment from July 3 to Nov. 12,1781; service four months and nine days; also Philip Coe in 2nd New York regiment was discharged from Capt. Matthew McConnell's company of the Invalid Regiment, Nov. 10, 1781.

He's listed in the 1786 tax list of Straban Twp., Washington County, PA. He was a carpenter by occupation, and in January 1787 was engaged to hew timber for the construction of the Washington County Court House. He was a warrantee on Mar 1, 1787, of one hundred acres of land and on Mar. 5, 1796, of two hundred acres of land, all in Washington County, PA. He's listed in Finley Twp, Washington Co, PA, in the 1793 tax list. In the U.S. Census of 1790, Philip Coe is listed as head of a family in Washington County, PA, of one male over sixteen years, two males under sixteen years, and four females. Later he moved a few miles into the Panhandle of Virginia, settling near Moundsville and died May 8, 1816.

Philip Coe was a brother to Moses Coe, the ancestor of Barbara Bush.  He was the great grandfather of Frank and George Coe who were considered the best friends of Billy the Kid.  Frank Coe wrote a book about their experience. (This is from Robert Coe research).

1816 (From the Dennis Side) Joseph Hines crossed the Ohio River and moved into Monroe County, Ohio where he purchased land, April 22, 1816.  He bought 101 and 30/100 acres at the rate of $2.00 an acre.  It was located on Range 6, Township 4, nw quarter of Section 36.  This was recorded at the land office in Marietta, Ohio.  Joseph paid $50.65 down on his land in 1816.  The heirs of Joseph Hines paid $42.25 in 1818 and $45.75 in 1819.  On December 6, 1823 with sundries, the Joseph Hines heirs made the final payment of $74.00.  The cost of the land was $217.35 and was patented July 19, 1824.

Elizabeth and Joseph had 2 sons and  5 daughters. The 1820 census show her

with two males under 10, 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-16 and 2 between 16 and 26.

One daughter was Sarah from the petition Joseph Jr filed against his mother to get the

property from her.  This Sarah was married to a John Hines with a son James.

There was also an Alexander Hines in the census in 1830.  He was in

a township that was called Enoch at the time.  Other names in this township

was Archers, Morris, Mc Brides, Hupps, Wells and Enochs.  By the Archer

and Wells, I would assume this is still close to Stafford.  Alexander was

a well known Captain in the Civil war.  He was also in Cameron, WV before

coming to Monroe County.

An article from the Monroe Gazette January 7,1887 written by A.R.P states

"Below here about the line between the farm of Miles Mallet and the Hughes

farm was buried the first man who died in the neighborhood..  His name was

Joseph Hines and his coffin was made of puncheons, slabs split from a tree

and hewn down for the purpose.  His funeral occurred in 1820.  He was

buried so near the creek bank that by 1848 it had washed away the earth

and till the coffin was exposed when the remains were moved to the church

yard."

Elizabeth and Joseph have a large memorial at Hines Chapel.

From Hardesty's History:

In Franklin Township the first settlement was on Clear Fork in 1805 - by

Martin and Fred Crow.  This settlement included persons named Forshey,

Carmichael, Hines, McVay, Holden, Hales, Deaths, Wilson and Wells.

From an article about Swazey:  It is said that the Methodist Church first

organized in Franklin Township as early as 1820 and it is believed that

the first church would have been the one built on the land of Joseph Hines.

The building was supposedly sold to a "group of Baptist".  Was this

Bethesda Baptist that Joseph's daughter in law Esther belonged to?

That subsequently became the Hines Chapel Church of Christ when

George Hines had inherited the estate?

This following paragraph is the excerpt from Marshall County, WVA History.

In connection with the history of Cameron, the following anecdotes

have been related:  There lived a family by the name of Hines near

what is now Cameron Station.  About the year 1788, a bushel of apples

was procured by one of the family in Washington, Pa.  Being thought

considerable of a luxury at that time, they were sparingly distributed

among the members of the family.  A little _____ had finished one and

accidentally choked on the core.  After some time it was relieved, and

through curiosity a member of the family procured the heart seed and

planted it.  It grew to a large tree, and is still standing on the farm now

owned by Mr. David McConaughey.

The Hines brothers, Joseph, Christopher and John, built a block-

house for defense against Indian depredations.  Near it at one time,

they had a nice lot of hogs fattening for use.  A band of savages

suddenly came upon them and took quite a fancy to them, and asked

permission of the Hines brothers to kill one.  Permission was readily

granted and the Indians assisted by the family soon killed and dressed

the hog.  The circumstance afterwards proved to be of material benefit

to the Hines family.  It was the means of sustaining friendly relations

between them and the savages.

The following is related of Christopher:  On one occasion he

climbed a poplar tree for the purpose of procuring bees.  He ventured

too far out on a limb; it swung down, and he was unable to reach the

body of the tree.  With great presence of mind he asked his companions

to clear away the stones to give him a soft place to light.  "Clear away

the stones and stones, and never mind the prayers," said he.  The logs

and stones were finally cleared away.  Christopher unlimbered and

reached the ground in safety.  "Now", said he, "If I had waited to pray

there would have been a dead man about here; we must do something

as well as pray."

1817 Dec 1st Joseph Hines dies per tombstone provided by his family mid 1800’s

and is buried between Miles Mallet and Benjamin Hughes farm (per Swazey History) approx 3 to 4 miles up Clearfork toward Swazey from his land . This would be approximately where Christian Hines lived.

His body was moved in 1848 per Hardesty History to the Church Cemetery.

1818  Joseph Hinds Administrator is appointed to settle his estate  per records at Monroe County Court House. David Sutherland is the administrator.

also living with Elizabeth but a different household is:

John Hines Monroe County census (20-30) with wife (20-30),  presumably

daughter Sarah who married John Hines.  They had a son James in 1831, and John Hines married   Sarah Dearth 1832, according to an early Dearth researcher.  Sarah Dearth was 15 this year.  This John and son James born in 1831 appear to be the same John Hines  in Washington County census with Sarah Dearth  in 1840 and Tyler County, WV.  Sarah Hines appears to be deceased when her son is named in the suit of 1838, see below.

1820 Christian Hines in Perry/Union Township census approx 3-4 miles from Elizabeth between her house and Swazey ,  approx where Joseph was buried in 1817, Christian and wife are over 45

1838 Joseph Hines sues Benjamin McVay Elizabeth and her grandson James

for the land Joseph Hines bought in 1816. James is the son of young Joseph’s sister Sarah Hines   James Hines is living in Washington County . This may be the son of John Hines who married

Sarah Dearth circa 1832.

From this document it is gleaned that there are 7 children belonging to

Elizabeth and Joseph Hines

Per Monroe County legal records...bid, page 173 - Sept .. term,  Joseph Hines vs. Benjamin McVay/McVey, Elizabeth Hines and James Hines/Hinds...petition for partition filed Feb 13 1838. Notes for ELIZABETH COE HINES:

The1821 Tax lists shows Elizabeth with 110 acres in R6 T4 S36 NW quarter

Children of JOSEPH HINES and ELIZABETH COE  are:

Margaret Hines born 1801 married  McVey (undocumented).

2.        i.  JOSEPH2 HINES, b. January 16, 1812, Bethel Township,Monroe County (now Franklin); d. April 02, 1885, Stafford, Ohio buried Hines Chapel Church of Christ.

                Amy Hines born 1814  (undocumented).

3.       ii.  THOMAS HINES, b. 1817.

4.       iii.  SARAH HINES b. 1810

An assumption is made that Margaret McVey was the daughter of Elizabeth.  The two lived together in widowhood a

the Hines homestead.  This is a presumption and not documented.

An assumption is made that Amy Hines was the daughter of Elizabeth, based on marriage application records

obtained  by Kathy Leslie that she gave her maiden names as Hines, prior to this it was believed that she was a McVey.

Generation No. 2

2.  JOSEPH2 HINES (JOSEPH1) was born January 16, 1812 in Bethel Township,Monroe County (now Franklin), and died April 02, 1885 in Stafford, Ohio buried Hines Chapel Church of Christ.  He married ESTHER OKEY, daughter of WOODMAN OKEY and CATHEINE LEMLEY.  She was born February 08, 1819 in Monroe Co.,Ohio, and died January 31, 1869 in Stafford, Ohio  buried Hines Chapel Church.

Notes for ESTHER OKEY:

Esther was 49 years old when she died just 7 days shy of 50.  She was a

member of the Bethesda Baptist Church since she was 19 years old.  The

obituary says she has 5 sons.  The Levin Okey researchers have

a daughter Esther as her oldest child.  But this daughter does not belong

to Esther and Woodman Hines.  Recently someone has found that the

surname for this Esther was Hineman instead of Hines.

Obit for Esther Hines:  Esther Hines, w/o Joseph Hines near Stafford, 49y 11m 23d,  member of   Bethesda Baptist since 19 y old, 5 sons, funeral Tuesday morning

Note: Esther’s only daughter Elizabeth died in 1864 and son James, so only 5 remaining sons

at the time of the obiturary.

The Bethesda Baptist Church was probably the current Hines Chapel.

This church had been organized in Elizabeth Hines's lifetime when

she owned the property as a Methodist Church and reportedly sold

"to a bunch of Baptists".

She was the daughter of Woodman Okey who is buried at Swazey Cemetery.

He was married to Catherine Lemley who is also buried at Swazey.

Catherine is the daughter of George Lemley (born in 1768 died in 1820),

who was also the son of George Lemley who died in Greenville,Pa in 1812.

Esther and Joseph also lost some children to typhoid fever.  Their daughter

Elizabeth died at 16 of this disease.

The obituary of Joseph Hines reads:

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, Tuesday, April 24, 1885:
Joseph Hines was born June 6, 1812 in West Virginia, on a farm, the present site of Cameron. When he was six years old, his father left Virginia crossing the river at the present site of Moundsville, and settled on the Clear Fork of the Little Muskingum Creek - two miles south of Stafford, then an unbroken wilderness whose only inhabitants were the wild beasts of the forest who held undisputed possession of the same…
Mr. Hines began life as a poor boy, but being possessed of an indomitable will, rare business qualities and an industry never excelled, he overcame every obstacle that stood in the way of success; fortune smiled upon his efforts; and for many years he was the owner of the largest farm in Franklin Township. As a neighbor there was none better. Possessed of a kind and generous nature in his heart was opened to the wants of the needy and he never turned any away hungry that stood in the need of assistance; many who have received benefits from his open hand will rise up and call him blessed.

Children of JOSEPH HINES and ESTHER OKEY are:

4.     SARAH2 HINES (JOSEPH1)  She married JOHN HINES.

Note: Sarah and John are probably cousins.  They were both born in 1810.  He is possibly

the son of John Hines from Cameron, WV .  This John Hines likely married Sarah Dearth after Sarah

Hines died.  John Hines married Sarah Dearth circa 1833.   Sarah Hines was certainly deceased by 1837,

and most likely died in 1831.   Sarah Hines was five years older than Sarah Dearth.  This Sarah and John were living in the same house with Elizabeth in 1830.  But they  were listed as a separate household.  After

Sarah died, James became the heir for her portion of old Joseph’s estate.

Child of SARAH HINES and JOHN HINES is:

           i.  JAMES3 HINES born 1831.

6.  WOODMAN3 HINES (JOSEPH2, JOSEPH1) was born 1840 in Hines Homestead, Franklin Township, Monroe County, Ohio, and died 1923 in rural Stafford, Ohio -  buried Hines Chapel Church of Christ.  He married MINERVA WHEATON.   She was the daughter of WILLIAM WHEATON and MARY (possibly STAFFORD)  She was born 1844, and died 1919 in rural Stafford, Ohio -  buried Hines Chapel Church of Christ.

Notes for WOODMAN HINES:

Wood and Minvera lived on the top of the hill above Mush Run.  Woodman's farm

started on the hill above the forks of Mush Run and the road to Stafford,  just north

of the current Hines Chapel . It included the land between the two roads and extended

north to what is now the Lewisville/Graysville Road.   In Woodman's day there

was a "buggy" road that went back to his home, running parrallel on the ridge

with the current two valley roads.   When we were children, our Mother sent us

back to Wood's house to pick berries with a warning not to fall in his well.  There

were still shrubbery around the area where his house stood and some grass.  Pat

and I would go there together.  The two of us would also go there at Christmas time

on some years to get one of Wood's Christmas trees.  My Mom's favorite joke

was to tell us she used to pick berrie's in Woodsfield (Wood's field).  Somehow

I was always waiting for"Minnie"  to come out from her grave and chase us out

of her berry patch.    But she never came.

Children of WOODMAN HINES and MINERVA WHEATON are:

Notes for GEORGE HINES:

George Hines bought the former Methodist Church that had been built upon Joseph

Hines property and had it moved to its present location on Sand Bar Road.  This Methodist Church

then became the Hines Chapel Church of Christ.  The church building "according to Hardesty's

History"  sat along Dry Run.  This is in the botton land on Dry Run just south of the George Hines

home.  George owned the original Joseph Hines 104 acres.  George built his home there,

and this is the home that in our generation, Floyd and Gussie McElfresh lived.   Gussie Hines,

a granddaughter of George was born in this house, and lived there until a few years ago.  Dry Run

crosses Sand Bar Road and runs into Clear Fork creek.  Gussie does not believe the cemetery

was moved but was always on the current spot and the Church was moved to Sand Bar Road

and adjacent to the cemetery.

Notes for ESTHER HINES:

Hester was known as "Hetty".  It is unclear whether the names for Esther/Hester

is Esther or Hester, they are given as both names in the Okey/Hines families.

On her marriage license she uses the name of Esther but in a census she uses

the name Hester.  Similiar differences are also noted with her grandmother Esther

Notes for LEANDER HINES:

Lee and Carrie lived in a beautiful brick federal house on the Lewisville/Graysville Road.

Somewhere on the ridge between Hanson Ridge  and Hartshorn Ridge.  The present

owners has defaced the exterior somewhat and its charm of yesteryear is not

completely intact.  The house was set on a slope giving a nice spacious lawn

that inclined to the house.  On entering the house from the front entrace was

a spacious stairway with a beautiful banister. To the left of the entrance was the

master bedroon.  On the right was the parlor.  After passing thru the parlor was

the formal dining room.  I believe that earlier the master bedroon had

been used as a parlor and the current parlor had been the sitting room.

In the back of the house was a later edition to the federal, that was a large

keeping room.  The keeping room included the kitchen, informal dining and

sitting area.  At the back of the house adjacent to the keeping room was

a large sun porch.  The keeping room was where the family gathered.   This

house became my dream home as a child.   When I was a child and visited

the house, I would expect to see, besides Carrie and Lee, Florence , who

helped Carrie with the housework and also helped on the farm,  Russel Hines,

who worked in the fields, Donnie the grandson that lived with Lee and Carrie,

occasionally Leonard, who stayed there during the weekdays, and sometimes

Jimmi visiting his grandparents.  On the weekends, Lonnie and Vivian would

come with their two daughters Janie and Hattie and later Sonny.

Leonard's children Carol and Bobby would also visit quite frequently.  It was

always a warm atmosphere and very lively place to visit.
