JOHNSTON SCHOOL SITE

Johnston School Site - 1986

Johnson School is probably the only school in the Monroe County that could not be reached by a public road. As described in the centennial publication prepared by the Monroe County Chapter of the Retired Teachers Association, “At a point one and one half miles south of Miltonsburg on County Road 100 stood the residence of Sebastian Burkhart. No road went from here to the schoolhouse. A path was mostly used and if you were compelled to drive to it, you would drive across the fields of Otto Kaiser who (in 1976 was) the owner of the land on which the schoolhouse stood. The school was closed in the spring of 1938 and the last teacher was Vernon Hamilton.”  Source:  The One Room Schools of Monroe County: 1808-1957 (Woodsfield:  Monroe County Retired Teachers Association, 1976) p. 11.

Former students at Miltonsburg School recall going to Johnson School to “compete in ball games.”

The Johnston School was moved in the late 1930s or early 1940s to a neighboring farm but it was struck by lightening and burned.  However, this is the site where it stood within Center Township near the borders of Center, Malaga and Summit Townships.  Note:  The name of the school is sometimes spelled Johnson -- Johnston is believed to be the correct spelling, however.  Click here for a sketch of the Johnston School or for a map of where the school stood.  Click here for a map showing the location of this school in the years 1898 and 1980.
