This photograph shows the high level of drilling and production of oil near Lewisville, Ohio in the first decade of the 19th century.  This photo shows the eastern “suburb” of Lewisville, Ohio.  The town of Lewisville is about ¼ mile to the left of the picture.  Woodsfield is about 7 miles to the east (to the right) of the picture. Just beyond the pasture in the foreground of the picture is a small creek, a branch of Sunfish Creek.  Just beyond the larger houses in the picture is the narrow-gauge railroad which runs the width of the picture.  Ohio Route # 78 now follows this course.
