Abe Shenker set up a business in 1900 buying and selling scrap iron, copper, hides, tallow, rope and other materials.  Mr. Abe Shender, who was known as the Junk Man, was one of the original recyclers and made a good business of it.  He employed 4 teams and wagons to gather junk material throughout Monroe and neighboring counties.  He would then sort and ship his junk in carload lots to the appropriate markets.
