Although this subject does not deal directly with a HARRISON family as such,
I want to pass it on for the benefit of those HARRISON searchers that might
be looking for ancestors that travelled the Emigrant Trails west. The OEN
database of the Oregon-California Trails Association is an excellent source.
CENSUS OF OVERLAND EMIGRANT DOCUMENTS
COED volunteers of the Oregon-California Trails Association survey
Overland Trail Emigrant Documents and record essential information
written by emigrants, which is entered into a computer database.
The Overland Emigrant Names (OEN) database, derived from the
overall COED database, provides ancestral information for
genealogists.
COED covers documents from the main corridor of the Oregon Trail
through South Pass to Oregon and California, the Mormon route to
Salt Lake City, southern trails to California, and other emigrant
trails west. Volunteers examine a wide variety of emigrant
documents, both published and unpublished, including diaries,
journals, logs, guides, reminiscences, autobiographies, letters,
and newspaper accounts.
The COED survey for each document includes five parts. Document
Description identifies the emigrant, source, year of journey and
other vital information. Journey Description includes occupation,
origin, departure and arrival location and dates, mode of travel,
and the routes.
Survey of Names lists all names in the document as spelled by the
emigrant and age, sex and origin, if known. Dates and events, such
as births, deaths, marriages, and grave locations are noted for
each individual.
Survey of Locations records each place name identified in the
document along with the date, if given. The last part, Indian
Encounters, lists contacts with Indians and includes the kind of
contact, tribes if known, and dates where given.
OVERLAND EMIGRANT NAMES
The OEN database is now open to public access by mail. The search
will be by surname and, if successful, will report names that
sound like the name requested but may be spelled differently. The
report will identify the document in which the requested surname
was mentioned and bibliographic data. In addition, the gender,
age, place of origin and the reason for which the name was
mentioned, depending on the actual information recorded in the
document, will be presented.
Queries must be made on a Search Request Form which may be
obtained by going to the OCTA HOME PAGE at the URL listed below or
by writing to OCTA Headquarters .
