Harrison gleanings



Hello everyone,

Here is some Harrison notes I took from a book I recently purchased.  Hope
there is something here that will interest you.

It's finally not a 100 degrees here in Vacaville, CA.  Yipee!

History of Albemarle County in VA, by Edgar Woods, copywrite 1901.

pg.  87 (early 1800's)  Samuel Harrison taught at Piney Grove.

pg.  88 ...forerunners of those admirable preparatory seats of learning which
arose in the next generation, and still exist in living memory ... of
Professor Gessner Harrison at Cocke's Tavern....

pg. 98  About 1830 an addition was made on its (town of Scottsville) western
boundary by Peyton Harrison, who had since its origin purcchased the Belle
Grove plantation, which lay just above the town, and on which the old
courthouse formerly stood.

p. 121 (1868)  By military authority, W.J. Points made the following persons
magistrates, Henry N. Harrison....

p. 132  The Presbyterian Church of Scottsville was founded in 1827, chiefly
though the agency of Rev. Peyton Harrison.  He had settled there as a young
lawyer in 1825.  Having been converted by the Preacing of Rev. Asahel
Nettleton, he became actively interested in religious work, and rested not
till a church was formed.  Shortly after he relinquished the law, and studied
for the ministry.  when he became a preacher, he returned to Scottsville, and
was settled as paster over the church for a brief period.

p. 164  Charles (Carter) married Elizabeth, dau of Fielding Lewis and amoung
his children was Maria, the wife of Pro Geo Tucker of the University and
mother of Eliza wife of Pro Gessner Harrison....

p. 167 Peter (Clarkson) began to purchase land in 1770...which he and his
wife Ann...His children were...Mary, the wife of Richard Harrison...


p. 211  James's (Gordon, native of Scottland, settled on Rappahannock River,
merchant) wife was Mary Harrison, of the Harrisons of Surry....

Richard Harrison in 1789 purchased from James Overstreet, of Bedford, a tract
of two hundred acres on the Martin King Road, between the waters of Buck
Island and Hardware, which he sold four years later to Charles McGehee. One
of the same name, and in all probability the same person, married Mary,
daughter of Peter Clarkson. He resided in the Whitehall neighborhood. and was
the father of a large family. His children were Elizabeth, the wife of
Weatherston Shelton, Ann, the wife of John Clarkson, Mary, the wife of
Charles W. Maupin, who removed to St. Louis, Peter C., Charles, John C., who
married Frances Rodes, Julius C., who married Elizabeth Strange, Richard,
David, James, who married Sarah Harris, and William.
In 1829 Dr. Charles Cocke and George M Payne, as trustees of William Moon,
sold Belle Grove, the seat of Old Albemarle Court House on James River, to
Peyton Harrison. Mr. Harrison was a son of Randolph Harrison, of Clifton in
Cumberland County, and a grandnephew of Benjamin, the signer of the
Declaration of Independence. He married Jane, daughter of Judge Dabuey Carr.
Settling on his plantation near Scottsville, he practiced law for three or
four years, but abandoning that profession he entered the Presbyterian
ministry. After making this change of vocation, he returned to Scottsville,
and became pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Near the close of 1833 he sold
Belle Grove to his brother, Carter H. Harrison. Here Carter resided until his
death in 1844. He was appointed a magistrate of the county in 1835. His wife
was Jeanette Fisher, and his sons were George Fisher, Henry, Edward
Jacquelin, and Carter. Henry was the father of George M. Harrison, Judge of
the present Court of appeals.

p. 315  Weatherston (Shelton) who married Elizabeth, dau of Richard Harrison,
sold the same year to Benjamin Hardin ...

p. 373  Military Organization of the County.  2nd Battalion, 4th company =
Richard Harrison.

p. 378  County magistrates, 1835, Carter H. Harrison
