KANSAS STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY HISTORIC NEWSPAPER AUCTION -- FINALLY!!

The Kansas State Historical Society Historic Newspaper Auction is FINALLY
live, online in the Ephmera & Paper Collectors Mall. Offered here are bound
runs ranging from 1796 to 1994, from 22 states and represent over 180
different titles. Lots range from a single volume to a few with almost 200
volumes to the run. In all, there are in excess of 5,000 bound volumes to
be auctioned off.

Some of the "better" titles and runs include a long run of the famous New
York Times -- From volume 1, Number 1 up to 1950. Three runs of the famous
Copperhead newspaper the Columbus (Ohio) Crisis. (This paper was published
from 1861 to 1871. One of the runs is from Volume 1, Number 1 to the end of
1869.) There are also several other title Civil War runs. Another key title
is the Las Vegas (New Mexico) Daily Optic from the 1880's -- Billy the Kid
territory! There are several runs from the Mid-West and Central U.S. for
the 1870's -- Jesse James, etc. The Auction also includes several runs from
Colorado for the 1880's -- more good "outlaw" papers.

Other nineteenth century lots include a run of the New York Herald and the
New York Tribune -- which includes the April 15, 1865 edition with news of
the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, a run of the Boston Patriot covering
the War of 1812, a few lots covering the fall of the Alamo and the
Annexation of Texas. Also included are 19th century runs of the Salt Lake
Tribune and the Desert Evening News and a run of the Laramie, Wyoming Daily
Boomerang.

Included in the 20th Century catalog are several runs which include issues
for the sinking of the Titanic, an early 1900's run from Idaho, a couple
runs covering WWI, and a WWII, 95 volume run of the famous New York PM
Daily and Weekly. There are several runs that cover the 1930's which
contain lots of news about gangsters like Bonnie & Clyde, Dillinger, etc.
Some of the 20th Century runs include the Sunday color comics sections as
well as rotogravures.

In short, there is something for most everone -- Dig out your history books
and drool over what is being offered.

Bidding will be accepted by snail mail, special electronic bid form, and
the last night of the auction, January 17, 1997, a special telephone
auction. With the exception of snail mail, all bidders must be
pre-registered. (The online bid form is password protected -- those
pre-registering will be assigned a bidder number and password.) A
pre-registration form is located on the site.
