Re: William Harrison of Frederick Co., MD

I sent the following message night of Feb 12 ... Larry had some problems
with the list server and I think it must have eaten it because I haven't
seen it show up so am posting again.....

This is getting interesting. Dr. William Harrison firmly believed he was a
descendant of Ben the Signer as well.. again in the Fredericksburg area.
This apparently was a fairly common misconception and a mixup of Benjamins I
think. From everything I have been able to gather regarding this family, my
current thinking is that they are descendants of Lawrence H and Catharine
Marmaduke. This Ben was also in politics at the same time so it would be
easy to get them confused - but I think they were on opposite sides of the
fence. Can you imagine the debates ... would hate to have been the
recording secretary!

Thought I would share this story with all of you as it is one of the most
interesting puzzles I have run across. I have not been able to verify nor
dispute the claim of Dr. Harrison that Harrison co. KY was named after this
Ben. I have tried very hard to find evidence to support Dr. William
Harrisons claim as descendant of Ben the signer to no avail.

Note that the Draper Manuscripts do contain documents referring to this Ben,
father of William, as Ben the signer. Considering that this Ben is the one
most commonly confused with Ben the signer, and that the area they lived in
was Fredericksburg, it might be reasonable to investigate this Lawrence H as
potential parents of this William, father of Zeph. or perhaps one of his
sibs. Considering that this William b. 1750 was killed by the indians, and
if he is the same one as fathr of Zeph, would had to have been old enough to
have spawned all those children before he went off with Col. Crawford. I
think I cannot claim to have all the children or marriages, nor do I have
original docs to prove the following line. I don't think much of this line
early part of the line is proven but rather based on a preponderance of
evidence ... so there may be some errors. We have cited sources of where we
found the info which will probably look like a funny character or an = sign#.

Benjamin was a captain for three years in the U.S. Virginia Line. He was
granted lands in Ohio which were given to Batteal and brothers. There are
at least three documents signed by the Pres. of U.S. regarding land grants
for service. Tennesee Cousins by Worth Ray indicates the parentage of Ben
to be Lawrence and Catherine (Marmaduke) Harrison. There are several
accounts indicating he is a descendent of Ben the Signer (see notes with son
Batteal).

According to Dr. William Harrison, "Batteal had the whooping cough and, as
his father had decided to descend the Ohio River and go up the Kentucky
River to what was then Bourbon County, KY. The Indians were on the warpath
and they had to travel in boats at night, so they thought it would be very
dangerous to take the boy with them. ... He was left by his parents at
Wheeling Virginia about 1783 or 1784 with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs.
Wm. Vance, who was a teacher in the school at that place. ... In six years
the Indian trouble subsided and Captain Benjamin Harrison went back for his
son Batteal, but as the boy did not know him and did not want to go to
Kentucky, his uncle, Wm. Vance, said he would keep him and educate him, as
there were no schools in Kentucky at that time. ... His [Gen Batteal
Harrison] father, Captain Benjamin Harrison, served as a Continental officer
in the Revolutionary War of 1776, under General George Washington. The
Harrison family are descendants from the brave Major Benjamin Harrison, who
feared not to place his name upon the Declaration of Independence. He was
the honored father of General Wm. H. Harrison, late President of the United
States." Batteal was at Wm H HARRISONs inauguration, they hugged, kissed
and cried. 164

Here is another version of the story interesting for its
similarities and differences. It is from History of <Fayette County> by R.S.
Dills.

General Batteal Harrison was born in Warfield, Virginia, in 1780. His
father's name was Benjamin, a cousin to the father of W. H. Harrison, whose
name was also Benjamin. Batteal's father was a soldier in the Revolution,
fought under Washington; was a descendant of the illustrious Benjamin
Harrison, who led the army of Cromwell in his long and blood struggle. when
quite a child Batteal and his parents started for the wilds of Kentucky.
While waiting at his aunt's, in WHeeling, where they were to take the boat,
she prevail upon his parents, on account of the great danger from Indians,
to leave the boy with her until the family were located and the danger had
subsided. Two years after they returned to him, but he had become so
attached to her that he refused to leave her; they even undertook to force
him to
accompany them, but she persuaded them to let him stay and they returned
without him, and he remained with her until he was grown to be a man.
Wishing to see his parents he started, first going to St. Clairsville, Ohio,
then to Chillicothe, where, learning that his mother was dead, he abandoned
the idea of going to Kentucky, recruited a company and entered the war of
1812, during which, in 1812 or 1813, he married Miss Elizabeth Scott,
daughter of Dr. Joseph Scott, of Chillicothe.

He married Elizabeth SCOTT - 3467, daughter of Joseph SCOTT Dr. - 5797,
