Harrison List Latest

Hi All, below is a msg to the Listowner's from Larry - Looks like all is
being resolved. Our list will be moved to Roots, any regional list will
remain at Maiser, I think. I rec'd a post from Cajun roots that it was
being combined with the Arkansas List and Larry is the listowner of AR.

There will be a follow up post on rootsweb offer. It is Free, but if you care
to donate sometime during the year, it will be fora worthwhile cause and
needed. If you want to check out RootsWeb go to:

https://sites.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/lists.html

http://www.mindwell.com/smartlist/

Some things may be changed.

The time table for moving and setting up all these lists complete is abt 29
May.

Becky and I are going to CHINA - yea! on the 21st May and return 3 June.

I am going to ask Larry & roots web to work around us and do ours last if
thats ok by you all.

You will probably start receiving mail before we get back.

thank you, and all questions and/or suggestions appreciated. josephine

Things are winding down on this saga, as most of you have probably
heard.

I have not yet heard back from IU about my request to keep the lists
alive and to get help ($$) putting listserv on my server. I'm giving
them until noon tomorrow before acting on what I'll discuss below.

As I have said to some of you, the physical location of a list (other
than reliability issues, etc.) is immaterial. So, why am I giving them
until noon - and why am I asking you to do the same?

The only viable reason I have for keeping the lists alive - from the
university perspective - is because they support research that ties
into history, folklore, etc., and provide a public service.

Well, you say, so what?

While most of the lists here were genealogy related, some were not and
I don't want to leave them high and dry if I can find a way to keep
this alive. So, I want to keep the IU option open until tomorrow at
noon.

If I don't have an affirmative answer by noon, then we move to a new
book.

As you probably know by now, rootsweb has graciously offered to accept
all the genealogy lists free of charge. Without ever having this as a
goal, it seems the mail service here became a major source of research
for genealogy via email in the U.S. Karen and Brian (and whoever else
there) don't want a gap left by it's possible departure, and so
they've stepped forward.

If we go the rootsweb route, I'll start making the necessary moves for
you as soon after noon tomorrow as I can. Now, there are some
important things for you to do if this happens, so please read on
CAREFULLY. THIS PRESUMES WE MAKE THE MOVE.

1. Some of you have told me you have moved already. I'm processing
those messages as fast as I can. Before I actually start moving
anything, I'll send out another message; if you've moved and I know
it, you won't get that message so you'll have nothing to do.

If you've moved and haven't told me, tell me now.

2. If you don't want to move there (for whatever reason), tell me now.

3. If you own a non-genealogy list, I'm really sorry things have not
worked out. (Again, this presumes IU doesn't respond - don't give up
until tomorrow, unless you've already found a new home.)

4. I don't have specific details, yet, but I'm presuming I'll transfer
subscription lists and (eventually) archives to their servers. I have
to find out how they handle welcome files, etc. I'll send you exact
details tomorrow.

5. If you are going to rootsweb (have gone or I'll be moving you)
please don't ask me for your subscription files or archives right now.
I'm going to be absolutely swamped with this, and you'll be able to
use their server to access your lists soon, anyway.

6. If you're going or have gone anywhere else and want your
subscription lists and/or archives, let me know and I'll get them to
you ASAP (lists first, archives once it dies down just a little).

I have several messages from you now requesting this info. Because of
this new development, I'm not going to act on those unless I see a
specific need (one person is going to make his available by ftp) or I
can identify you're somewhere else. Right now I'm swamped by mail, but
I'll try to answer you as fast as I can, but please help me by not
sending unnecessary requests.

One way or the other we should all be back in business by the weekend.

I think rootsweb wants me to play a role there and I'm waiting on an
email back from Karen, so you may not be rid of me after all.

If this spells the end of family genealogy lists at IU, as well as the
other lists we've hosted, I want you to know I've enjoyed (mostly)
working with you here. It's been hectic, at times it's been very
frustrating, but I've enjoyed it. I hope I was able to make a
difference for you and your research. I think we blazed a new path or
two and I hope that influence goes on helping people in their
research.

You'll hear from me again sometime after noon tomorrow.
