>From MSN Update Bulletin:
Upcoming Changes to Our E-mail System
As part of a future update to MSN (MSN 2.5, which is currently in Beta
testing), we're deploying a new Internet e-mail system. This system will
allow
you to use new Internet e-mail programs such as Microsoft Internet Mail or
Microsoft Outlook Express. Right now we're making the behind-the-scenes
adjustments necessary to accommodate this change. Because of this, you may
notice that the e-mail you receive from people outside of MSN displays your
e-mail address as:
[email protected]
As you can see, "classic" has been added after your ID. This does not affect
normal usage of your address; this change is simply a mechanism used on our
servers to ensure higher levels of e-mail performance.
Do you need to give people a new address?
No, your friends can continue sending mail to your [email protected] address, as
they have in the past. Because of the switchover to the new mail system, our
new mail servers are just addressing your current e-mail a little
differently.
So, if your MSN Member ID is Bob, then all messages you send will contain
[email protected] as the Sender e-mail address. But all messages sent to
either [email protected] or [email protected] will arrive at your current e-mail
program exactly as before.
Does this affect any of the mailing lists that you subscribe to?
You'll still be able to receive messages from your mailing lists, but you
might not be able to send messages back. This is because some mailing lists
use your e-mail address as a password to authenticate all mail received from
you, and this change to your internal address could affect that process.
Again, if you only receive mail from your lists, this change doesn't affect
you.
However, if you need to respond to mailing lists that use your e-mail address
as a password, we suggest that you re-subscribe to those mailing lists. To do
that:
1.Send mail to the list manager asking to remove your [email protected] from
the list. 2.Re-subscribe to the list, as you normally would.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
Heres some additional background information on this topic:
When we make this change to our mail system, your outgoing mail address will
be [email protected]. If you belong to a service such as listserv,
listproc, or majordomo, which use your fully-qualified e-mail address as
authentication to send mail to their lists, your address will no longer be
recognized as valid. The net result is that youll still receive postings,
but
when you try to send mail back to the list youll be denied access (because
[email protected] will be recognized as a valid user but
[email protected] will not). By re-subscribing to your mailing lists,
you can avoid this issue.
