I am not certain which Burr Harrison the following is referring to but came
across it in my hunt for my BASS ancestors. The BASYE named below was of
Prince William, Fauquier and Culpeper Co. VA. Some of these descendants
removed to Bourbon Co. KY.
Virginia Historical Magazine, vol. XXXV, p 390-392 in the article entitled
"The Baptists in Fauquier County, 1779-1771" [cited in The Basye Family in
the United States" by Otto Basye.
"The account book of Peter Hitt was for many years in the possession of
members of that family and is now in the hands of the Fauquier Historicial
Society. Its chief value consist in the light thrown by most of the
extracts upon the state of the Baptist Church in Fauquier County, Virginia.
The extract shows that as early as 1770-1771, the PICKETTS, MAUZYS,
WITHERS, BURR HARRISON, the GREENS, ASHLEYS, PAYNES and BASYES, all of whom
were families of prominence in Fauquier, had left the church of England and
had connected themselves with the Baptist church."
Perhaps some looking in the Baptist church records can help elucidate some
of our mysteries. Linda Cassidy-Lewis line surely has the naming pattern
of the Burr Harrison line of Stafford/Prince William/Fauquier Co. VA. What
is also interesting is that from Culpeper, the Baptists swarmed into SC to
further their missionary work. I don't think they were much liked in VA :-)
