History of Jackson Co. AL, by John Robert Kennamer, 1935. Copy in Limestone Co. Athens, AL Archive Library.
"A new Company was organized in 1789, called the Tennessee Land Company, by Zachariah Cox of SC, and others. They purchased 3,500,000 acres from Georgia for less than .02 cents per acre. This tract embraced the northern counties of Alabama. They built a blockhouse and other defense works at Muscle Shoals, TN against the warning of the United States and the objections of the Indians.
The Cherokee Chief GLASS appeared with a body of Indians and threatened them with death, if they remained. Cox and his party were allowed to withdraw without injury. The Indians destroyed their works, and this ended the second attempt to settle the Tennessee valley of which Jackson Co, AL was a part."
In 1806 Michael Harrison with Gideon, & Daniel came Madison Co., AL and purchased land. Michael H. was the attorney for the Tennessee Land Co. , owned by Cox, Beatles, and Estill. Capt. Beatles and Estill were in the Battle of Kings Mountain like Gideon and from the same area. [S416] [S45]
