e was the son of well to do parents. Had a good education, listed as Dr. J.T. Craig in Dallas Co, AR, and was coroner from 1845 to 1846. A member of the Home Guard during the Civil War 1861.
He left home when he was 21 yrs of age and came to the new state of AR. He bought 107 acres of swamp land in 1837, s1/2 of NW 1/4, Sec 25 in Twp 9 So , Range 18 West. This land was about 4 miles west of Sparkman, AR on the Ouachita River. Deed Book C, page 528 Dallas Co AR. Dallas Co was formed from Clark Co in 1845.
1850 census the family was listed with Real Estate valued at $100.00 and he was a regular Baptist Minister. 1860 census he was listed with $4,000 real estate and $12000 personal estate.
In Nov 6, 1867, he bought 120 acres of land in Cleveland Co, AR from Solomon Morgan in Sec 5 & 6, Twp 11, Range 11 West. Land was located 1/2 mile west of Marks Mill battle ground marker off State Hwy 8 about 10 east of Fordyce, AR.
July 18, 1868, he & Solomon Gardner founded the Church of christ at New Edinbury. List of Pastors, he was lst and his son Albert Bayliss was 6th of 24 brethen who served as clerk of the church.
Aft 1860 he brought his mother, Eleanor from Limestone Co, AL to AR to live with him. She is listed on the 1870 census of Bradley Co, AR. [S234]
