(not everything changes)
"I thought of finishing this book - " The Adventures of a gentleman in search of a genealogy" - and had partly written a narrative of my inquisition among the various classes of busy, indifferent, careless, uninterested, or contemptuous folk who care little for such pursuits and despise their pursuers, down to the greedy cousin who wanted to know if there was any money in it? And the extremely cautious kinsman who, before answering, sent a lawyer to interview my inquirer! Nay, genealogy writing is a trying task, requiring tact, care, patience, forebearance, pertinancity, and abundent good humor. The mass of one's kindred will be found unsympathetic, and one runs the risk of being branded a bore. Yet, some day, but elsewhere, I may perhaps finish my story of my Adventure.
Brantz Mayer, Memoir and Genealogy of the Maryland and Pennsylvania Family of Mayer. (reprinted in The National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Sept. 1982 Vol. 70, #3 - and in the news letter of the Buncombe Co. Genealogical Society, January, 1983, Vol. IV, #1.

GRAVEN HAMPTON HARRISON BenjaminThomas Wade Missouri Virginia |
HH 3.1 - 78 We have checked every avenue we hear of in our search for the parentage of Benjamin Craven Harrison. Some papers indicate he was born in 1854 but most likely it was 1858. He was born in Arkansas or possibly moved there as an infant. If anyone has a Thomas who perhaps was lost from the rest of the family in the 1860's maybe they were in AR and could be the one we seek information on. Benjamin, we believe was the Benji found in his household in 1860 census. And again in 1870 only in another county: Searcy. In the 1860 census, they were White, Co., AR. Your records might give Benjamin as a Benji. Can someone tell us something about Missouri Harrison and Virginia Harrison; 9 and 15 years old in 1870 census? They too, lived with Thomas Harrison. Who did they marry, when and where did they die? Does anyone have a Thomas Harrison in their line, who possibly had a brother with the initial "J" or the census taker of 1860 made a mistake on the age or gender. In the Thomas Harrison home, after Benji's name, we find a "J" - Male - age 50 or age 5 (could be male or female). It is not clear enough to read. Benjamin Craven Harrison had a son named Wade Hampton Harrison. Are they related to the Hamptons? Can some ancestor hunter make a suggestion as to where we should go, when we've come to a dead end? |
