HARRISON, Philip Washington, of Bellefonte, Ark., was born April 4, 1842 at Jackson, Madison Co., Tenn. the son of Thomas Harrison of VA who lived at Madison Co., Tenn. and was the son of John P. Harrison, and his wife Virginia Harrison who lived at Jackson, Tenn. Maiden name of subject�s mother was Tennessee Reeves, dau. of Billy Reeves of Boliver Tenn. Subject was educated at Beebe, White Co., Ark., was a farmer, a Democrat, Cumberland Presbyterian, Mason and Odd Fellow. Entered service July 4, 1861, 7th ARK. Regt. CA, John McCauley Capt., Shavers Regt. R D Brigade, surrendered last of 1864. Married Margaret Ann Norvell, dau. of Dave and Martha Ann Norvell, at Shellville (Shelbyville?) Tenn.

Exum Lewis II was born Sept. 15, 1771, Edgecombe, N.C., died Jan 18, 1839,
Edgecombe, N.C.; married Dec. 31, 1795, Ann HARRISON. Her brother was Richard
HARRISON. He married "the widow Bell (Smith)"and they had three children,
James Briscoe, Martha and Richard. Tombstone at Tarboro, NC: "James B.,
son of Richard and Martha Harrison, died October 16, 1826, aged 25 years".
Martha HARISON, his mother, died Oct. 21, 1833, aged 69 years. Ann HARRISON
was born Aug. 10, 1775, St. Mary�s, Maryland; died Dec. 16, 1843, Edgecombe,
NC, daughter of Kenelm and Elizabeth (Edlin) HARRISON. Exum Lewis II was a planter
and resided at "Mr. Prospect", Edgecombe Co., NC. He was a member
of the Methodist Church.

5.4 - 171 Benjamin Harrison married Lydia Cran 24 April 1796 at the Presbyterian Church in Caldwell, Essex co., NJ. Benjamin was born 10 March 1776 and died 23 May 1858. Lydia was born 7 August 1776 and Died 28 October 1847. Both are buried at the Grave Yard in Hanover, Morris Co., NJ; although they probably resided in nearby Livingston, Essex Co., NJ. They had children: Aseneth 1797-1822, Nima 1801-?, William 1812-1862, Betsy 1814-?, Lydia Louise 1817-?. Were there other children? Who are the Parents of Benjamin Harrison and Lydia Crane? |

5.4 - 178 I seek information on the Harrison line of Sumner Co., TN in the Early 1800�s. The lineage is as follows: Charles Wade Harrison (1), Jesse Horace Harrison (2), Thomas Franklin Harrison (3), Granville Harrison (4), Henry Harrison (5). Henry was born in TN ca 1823. He married twice, Each wife being named Sarah. The mother of my line was Sarah Graves. Known sons of Henry were Granville, James E., Alfred Douglas, Thomas Mitchell and William Henry. James must have died in his teens or stayed in Sumner as the rest of the sons came to Weakley and Obion Co., TN with Henry and his second wife, Sarah ca 1871.I wish to establish the parentage of Henry, b. 1823, probably in Sumner Co. |

Buying and selling land seems to have been a past-time with my ancestors. It that were not so, I doubt that I could ever complete this genealogy.
From the Office of the Register in Paterson, NJ, I recently received copies of deeds that are very helpful. I now know that my Great, Great Grandfather, Joel Harrison returned to West Milford, Passaic County in 1864. He purchased 10 acres of land with house and barn for $150.00 on 14 December 1864. On 3 January 1865 (about 3 weeks later) he purchased 38 acres for $150.00 (no buildings on adjoining land). A year later on 7 April 1866, he acquired for $100.00 and additional 44 acres and on 13 July 1867, for $25.00 he purchased 3 acres of adjoining land.
West Milford had originally been Pompton, Bergen County and this is where Joel was born; where his father and grandfather had lived. Joel had left his homeland in 1853 to live at Thurston, Steuben County, New York. In 1859, his wife Alameda Wright Harrison had died. She is buried at Babcock Hollow Cemetery near Bath, NY. This writer visited her grave in 1982. The 1860 census shows that Joel, his son Henry G. and Henry�s wife, Lucinda were occupants of the same house. This is no doubt the "Joel Harrison Homestead" in Thurston�Henry and Lucinda were newly weds, living there and taking care of DAD.
In the Spring of 1864, Jacob Harrison, son of Joel and Great Grandfoather of this writer, made the journey from Iowa to Steuben County. He took his wife, Ardelia Look (a native of Steuben Co.) and his four small children; Almeda, William Henry, Mary and Jacob John. Jacob left his wife and children in the care of mother and father-in-law, Benjamin Franklin Look and Rachel Dobbs Look. Jacob went west to Idaho Falls, Colorado to �dig for gold�. It was the Colorado Territory at that time, and family lore states that "Grandpa went to Idaho, to strike it rich".
While in New York, Jacob did several things. One was to pay his brother, Thomas $500.00 to serve in the Civil War for him�This was legal in 1864. The chances are that he talked his father into returning to New Jersey, as New York had sad memories for him. One or two of his daughters had died there and his son-in-law Samuel Smith was killed in the Civil War. Joel�s sons John and Abraham were still living in New Jersey. West Milford is a beautiful community today and must have been very special in the late 1800�s.
I find no more land purchases after 1867. What became of the land or the man, I have yet to determine. It is important to remember that in 1867, Joel Harrison was 69 years old; but this is hardy stock of Harrison men. His son, Jacob at age 65, packed up and left the Iowa farm to reside permanently in Long Beach, California.
Copies of earlier deeds show that Joel was the probable son of Thomas born 1760 and the grandson of William Harrison, Jr. and his wife Alice Starkey. Quaker records document that William, Jr. is the son of William Harrison and Sarah Bullock and that William is the son of Richard Harrison and Ruth Buckman as stated in the March 1985 issue of HARRISON HERITAGE.
