Dear MS. Jones,
It has come to my attention that you have published a volume dealing
with Harrison family genealogy and heritage. With that in mind,
I'm wondering if you can be of assistance to me.
In connection with a project being conducted by The Society for
American Baseball Research, RD2 Box 414, Cooperstown, New York,
I am interested in determining the exact date and place of
the death of a man by the name of LEO J "Ben"
Harrison. In addition, I'm interested in being put in touch
with Mr. Harrison's closest surviving relative. Mr.
Harrison was a veteran of major league baseball.
Mr. Harrison's birth data was never chronicled in baseball files.
He was an outfielder appearing in one major league game; that
with the Washington Senators in their game of September 27, 1901.
The newspapers of the day reported Mr. Harrison to be living in
Maryland but no further specifics available
By 1905 Mr. Harrison was playing in New Jersey's Hudson River
League at which time he was reportedly residing in Hoboken, New
Jersey. The last report of Mr. Harrison's travels indicate that
in 1906 and 1907 he played with the New Bedford, Massachusetts
Team of the New England League. The newspapers of the period also
referred to Mr. Harrison's residence as Hoboken, New
Jersey.
My efforts to trace Mr. Harrison in Hoboken have proven unsuccessful.
A listing for him could not be found in Hoboken City Directories
of the day. Inquiries to the Hoboken Public Library and the sports
department of the Hoboken newspaper have resulted in negative
responses.
Mr. Harrison is presumed deceased due to the passage of some eighty
years since his participation in professional baseball. For all
I know, he's a centenarian living in retirement. (If so, he'd
be only the second player on record to have celebrated his hundredth
birthday.)
Whether living or deceased, I'm interested in updating the record
of Mr. Harrison so as to update his demographic data maintained
in baseball files. Thus I'm hopeful that the Harrison family genealogy
and heritage you've compiled contains an entry with respect to
the ballplayer.
Can you, by chance, provide any specifics pertaining to Mr. Harrison? Or, can you offer any information which may enable me to pursue this search? Any information may prove helpful; a birth record, a last known residence, a former employer, a church affiliation, a cemetery containing a Harrison family plot, etc.
In the event Mr. Harrison is deceased, in addition to learning
of the date and place of his death, I'd like to be
put in touch with someone capable of completing a biographical
Baseball Questionnaire on his behalf. The Questionnaire, when
completed, will contain all the information needed for the record
of Mr. Harrison to be brought up to date.
Kindly note that my interest in determining the present whereabouts
of Mr. Harrison is for no other reason than to update his demographic
data as maintained in the files of major league baseball.
