The Hartsaw Family of West Virginia: The Descendants of George Hartsaw and Sidney Wilmoth

The Descendants of George Hartsaw

First Generation

Please note that the surname Hartsaw appears spelled a myriad of ways within historical records (Hardsaw, Hardsock, Hartsoc, and Hartsock are some examples) and is often indexed even more interestingly! To lessen confusion I have standardized the name to Hartsaw, as this seems to be the spelling several members of the family settled on around 1910.

1. George Hartsaw was born on 20 Aug 1819 and died on 21 Oct 1843 at age 24.

Noted events in his life were:

He has conflicting death information of 8 Jan 1843. Two dates are given for the death of George Hartsaw: 21 Oct 1843 and 8 Jan 1843. If the Jan date is correct, George could not have been the father of his second son, George Washington Hartsaw, who was born 17 May 1844. When George's widow, Sidney (Wilmoth) Phillips, applied for a Civil War mother's pension, she gave George's death date as 8 Jan 1843 in her pension application dated 28 Sep 1889, which was nearly forty-six years after George's death. George's Oct death date comes from the Richard Kittle Family Bible in which the date was probably recorded fairly contemporaneously with his death and therefore has a greater chance of being correct. However, the evidence is not conclusive at this time. He appeared on the census in 1840 in Randolph County, (West) Virginia.

George married Sidney Wilmoth, daughter of John Wilmoth and Ann Kittle, on 28 Jan 1841. Sidney was born in Oct 1823 in West Virginia, died on 19 Aug 1895 at age 71, and was buried in Mount Morris Cemetery, Hiram Mount Morris Road, Barbour County, West Virginia.

Noted events in her life were:

She has conflicting death information of 4 Feb 1848. The Richard Kittle Family Bible lists a "Sydney Wilmoth" as being "deseast february 4 1848." There were at least two other Sydney Wilmoths connected with Randolph County, (West) Virginia at this time, one being Sidney Wilmoth's paternal grandmother, Sydney (Currence) Wilmoth. Therefore, it is likely that this entry refers to that individual as all other information indicates that this Sidney Wilmoth did not die until 1895. She appeared on the census in 1850 in Barbour County, (West) Virginia. She appeared on the census in 1860 in Philippi post office, Barbour County, (West) Virginia. She appeared on the census in 1870 in Cove township, Philippi post office, Barbour County, West Virginia. She appeared on the census in 1880 in Cove district, Barbour County, West Virginia. On the 1880 U.S. census Sidney is enumerated living in the household of her son, Benj F Canfield. She had a residence in 1883-1892 in Claude, Taylor County, West Virginia. In an 1883 affidavit within her claim for a Civil War mother's pension, Sidney communicated that "[s]he resided in 1864 near Kasson Barbour Co. W.Va. that being her post office and continued to reside there until 1883 then moved near Claude Post office where She now resides." In an 1892 affidavit she stated that she still resided near Claude, Taylor County, West Virginia and lived at the home of her son, B F Canfield. Sidney listed her personal property as consisting at that time of "one bed and one old Chest."

Military: Private, WV Company F, 15th West Virginia Infantry. It appears that Loman enlisted at Philippi, (West) Virginia in late Aug/early Sep (his enlistment dates are variously given as 23 Aug 1862, 27 Aug 1862, and 1 Sep1862) as a private in Company F of the 15th West Virginia Volunteers, commanded by Fenelon Howes. Jasper married Annie C Colebank about 1891. Annie was born in Apr 1872 in West Virginia. Another name for Annie was Anna. Annie was likely the sister of Sarah Ann Colebank who married Jasper's brother, Francis V Hartsaw, although only circumstancial evidence exists at this time to support that claim. Annie was probably the Christine Colebank, aged 8, appearing on the 1880 U.S. census in the household of Jesse Colebank in the Cove district of Barbour County, West Virginia. Strengthening that claim is the fact that a C W Colebank was enumerated living in the household of J L Hardsaw on the 1900 U.S. census listed as a "brother-in-law." This C W was possibly Charles Colebank, son of Jesse Colebank and brother to Sarah Ann and Christine Colebank.

On the 1910 U.S. census two John Hartsaws appear enumerated in the Fairfax district of Tucker County, West Virginia. In the first entry a John Hartsaw, age twenty-one, is enumerated living as a boarder in the household of John Lansburry. His occupation is listed as a Laborer in a Handle [?] Factory. In the second entry a John Hardsaw, aged twenty-two, is enumerated living as a boarder in the household of John W Nevill. His occupation is listed as a Saw Mill Laborer. It is unclear whether either of the individuals is the correct John Hartsaw. However, the first entry was enumerated on 5 May 1910 and the second on 7 May 1910, so it is conceivable that the same individual was enumerated twice.

He appeared on the census in 1910 in Wood Street, Ritchie Magisterial district, Wheeling City, ward 8, Ohio County, West Virginia. On the 1910 U.S. census Perry is enumerated living in the household of a Patrick S Cole. This individual is likely Perry's maternal uncle, Patrick Sylvester Colebank. Also living in the household is a step-daughter of Patrick S Cole named Bessie Belle King. Her name, age, and birth information match that of Perry's future wife and is probably the same individual. He appeared on the census in 1910 in Leadsville district, Randolph County, West Virginia. It appears that Perry is possibly enumerated twice on the 1910 U.S. census. He was first enumerated living with his uncle, Patrick S Cole, in the Ritchie district of Ohio County, West Virginia on 18 Apr 1910 and is also enumerated living in the household of his father, Francis V Hartsaw, in the Leadsville district of Randolph County, West Virginia on 9 May 1910.
