The Chaney Family Genealogy site, was created to share accurate genealogy information on all the lines I have researched, with others who may be researching the same lines. This line is that of my mother's maternal side of the family. All the above surname families have married into the Chaney family, either directly or indirectly, via their descendants. Most are of German, English and Irish descendant. The majority of these families were first documentated in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky.

This line is that of my mother's maternal side of the family. The majority of these family were from the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Louisiana areas, then migrating west, to Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and many ending up in Oregon. Many other collateral branches are listed, all seem to be heading in the same direction.

Buck Family


JUSTUS BUCK, born 1726 Hartford, Connecticut and died 1870 in Saybrook, Middlesex Co., Connecticut. He married Rosamond Parmelee. Descendant married into the Sherman line.

Chaney Family


JOHN C CHANEY, born 1821 Louisiana and died 1864 in Missouri. He married Emily Katherine Stockton. First documentation found in Smith Township, Dade Co., Missouri, in 1860. Descendant married into the Ball line.

Cooper Family


EMBERSON ELBERT COOPER, born 28 May 1812 in Wayne Co., Kentucky and died 12 August 1880 in West Salem, Marion Co., Oregon. He married Nancy Wann.

Galloway Family


CHARLES GALLOWAY, born 20 August 1798 in Hampstead Co., Virginia and died 30 September 1884 in Yamhill Co., Oregon. He married Mary Haney. His grandson married into the Cooper family.

Northup Family


HENRY H NORTHUP, born in 1839 in Massachusette and died 24 September 1927 in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon. He married Lydia B Harkness. His son married into the Cooper family.

Ragsdale Family


JOHN D RAGSDALE, born abt. 1815 in Kentucky and died after 1860 probably in Missouri. He married Lydia. First documentation is found in 1850 Dade Co., Missouri. His son married into the Hampton line.

Sherman Family
FREDERICK SHERMAN, born 1770 New York and died 1835 in Hartford, Washington Co., New York. He married Nancy Sherman. First documentation found in Washington Co., New York in 1795. Descendant married into the Chaney line.
  • MORRIS SHERMAN, son of Frederick and Nancy Sherman, born 1800 in Kingsbury, Washington
     Co., New York and died in 1850 in Kingsbury, Washington Co., New York. He married
     Annis Rose.

  • ELIZA SHERMAN, daughter of Morris and Annis Rose Sherman, born 1822 in Kingsbury,
     Washington Co., New York and died in 1867 in Washington Co., New York.
     She married John Collins Blaisdell.

  • EDGAR NORTON SHERMAN, born 1825 in Kingsbury, Washington Co., New York and died 1874 in
     Amity, Yamhill Co., Oregon. He married Almira P Trumbull.

  • ANN MARIA SHERMAN, daughter of Morris and Annis Rose Sherman, born 1829 in Kingsbury,
     Washington Co., New York and died in 1920 in Glens Falls, Warren Co., New York.
     She married Edward Edgar DeForest.

Stockton Family


DANIEL STOCKTON, born 1726 New Jersey and died 1804 in Stokes Co., North Carolina. He married Mary Clayton. First documentation found in Somerset Co., New Jersey in 1800.

Trumbull Family


LEVI TRUMBULL, born about 1732 Connecticut and died 1809 in Suffield, Hartford Co., Connecticut. He married (1) Mary Polly Smith (2) Mary Granger. First documentation found in Suffield, Hartford Co., Connecticut in 1756. Descendant married into the Sherman line.

Indirect Descendant Lines

The following are indirect descendant lines, to the above families. The common link with these lines, all were
pioneers to Oregon, arriving before 1865, settling first in Marion, Multnomah, Polk and Yamhill counties.

Bradbury Family


CLEMENT BRADBURY, born 1819 in Maine and died in 1902 in Clatsop Co., Oregon. He married Ann H Hobson in 1850 in Clatsop Co., Oregon.

Gatton Family


WILLIAM GATTON, born 1831 in Holmes Co., Ohio and died 1924 in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon. He married Nancy Jane Hendrickson. His descendant married into the Burton Line.

Goucher Family
GEORGE W GOUCHER, born 1820 in Parkersburg, Wood Co., Virginia and died 1892 in Amity, Yamhill Co., Oregon. He married (1) Delilah Ann Morrison (2) Jane Lindsay (3) Almira P Trumbull (4) Catherine E Sailing. Married into the Sherman line.

Hagey Family


LEVI HAGEY, born 1825 North Carolina and died 1905 in Yamhill Co., Oregon. He married (1) Elizabeth Shuck (2) Emily Katherine Stockton. Married into the Chaney line.

Hobson Family
WILLIAM HOBSON, born 1797 in England and died 1879 in Clatsop Co., Oregon. He married Margaret Hutchinson and Elizabeth Turner. His son married into the Young family. 
  • ANN H HOBSON, born 1831 in Derbyshire, England and died in 1856 in Clatsop Co., Oregon.
     She married Clement A Bradbury. Ann H Hobson is the daughter of William Hobson.

  • JOHN HOBSON, born 1825 in Derbyshire, England and died 1896 in Clatsop Co., Oregon.
     He married Diana M Owens. John Hobson is the son of William Hobson.

  • RICHARD HOBSON, born 1829 in Derbyshire, England and died 1878 at sea bound for Astoria
     Oregon. He married Kezziah Catherine Kate Young. He married into the Young Family.
     Richard Hobson is the son of William Hobson.

Likens Family
SIMON LIKENS, born 1817 Pennsylvania and died 1880/1900 in Yamhill Co., Oregon. He married (1) Nancy (2) Sarah Ann. Descendant married into the Chaney line.

Morris Family
SIMON MORRIS, born 1819 Kentucky and died 1851 in Yamhill Co., Oregon. He married Hannah Boyle. Descendant married into the Likens Family.

Noland Family
GEORGE NOLAND, born in 1857 in Lane Co., Oregon and died in 1915 in Klamath Falls, Klamath Co., Oregon. He married Charlotte Lottie Goodell in 1888 Clatsop Co., Oregon.

Owens Family
THOMAS OWENS, born 1813 Wales and died 1892 in McMinnville, Yamhill Co., Oregon. He married Emeline Layton Young in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon. Descendant married into the Sherman line.

Springer Family
BARNEY D SPRINGER, born 1804 New Jersey and died 1860/70 in Amity, Yamhill Co., Oregon. He married Susan. Descendant married into the Goucher line.

Waller Family
THOMAS C WALLER, born 1786 North Carolina and died 1831 in Morgan Co., Illinois. He married Jane Logan McNary. Descendant married into the Chaney line.

Young Family
EMELINE LAYTON YOUNG, born 1827 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and died 1903 in McMinnville, Yamhill Co., Oregon. She married Thomas Owens. Emeline Layton Young is the daughter of James Robert Young. Descendant married into the Sherman line.
