Major William Hawkins POLK
His birth and death dates are recorded in the same Para as the
following:
Col. William H. Polk was born in Maury County, Tennessee, May 24,
1815. He was educated at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and the
University of Tennessee. He studied law and was admitted to the bar
in 1839. In 1841 and 1843, he was elected to the State Legislature;
was appointed by President Tyler Charge d' Affaires to Naples, where
he negotiated a treaty with the Two Sicilies. He served as a Major in
the Ninth Dragoons, in the Mexican War; was a Delegate to the
Nashville Convention in 1850; and a Representative in Congress, from
Tennessee, from 1851 to 1853. He was a brother of President James
Knox Polk and opposed to the secession of the South from the Union.
He died at Nashville. Dec. 16, 1862.
