Father | John Forbes of the Black Lip b. circa 1352, d. 1405
Mother | Margaret Elizabeth of Dunmore Kennedy3 |
Birth* | circa 1380 | Alexander was born circa 1380 at Scotland.4 |
Note* | The name of Forbes, which is probably local and derived from the lands of Forbes in county Aberdeen, is at least as ancient in Scotland as the time of King William the Lion, when we find John de Forbes possessing lands. Fifth in descent from John de Forbes was ALEXANDER de FORBES, who was created a peer of partliament some time before the year 1444.2
!AInfoNew | 1402 | Given charter to the lands of Edinbancory and Craiglogy, Nov 8th, 1402, by Isabel Douglas, Countess of Mar and confirmed by King Robert III, June 23, 1405. These lands were also chartered in 1364 to Sir Alexander's grandfather.5 |
Birth | circa 1404 | Alexander was born circa 1404 at Scotland. This birth date is too late if he received land in 1402. I believe that this land was not to this man but to another, older relative.6 |
!AInfoNew* | 1407 | In 1407/8 he accompanied Alexander Stewart, Earl of Mar, and Sir Walter Lindsay in an expedition to England to tilt with Lord Beaumont and other English knights. Wyntoun calls him a knight of Mar, and praises the worthy manner in which he and his commrads upheld the honor of their country on the fields of chivalry. Celebrated by Andrew de Wyntoun as one of four Scottish knights to mimic battle with English knights and won. They received great commendation for this event.2,5 |
!AInfoNew | 1411 | Alexander Forbes , 1st Baron Fo(r)bes fought in the Battle of Harlaw in 1411 with such success that General Alexander Stuart, Earl of Mar befriended him. He followed the Earl to Flanders where they engaged battle under the Duke of Burgandy. He was also given a safe conduct in Dover, June 9, 1421 for entry to and from England, and another in October 1421 permitting him to pass with 40 men at arms and attendants to 100 persons and to visit King James in France under the control of King Henry V.5 |
!AInfoNew | 1419 | In 1419 he formed one of the contingent of Scottish knights who with their followers responded to the appeal of Charles, dauphin of France to Scotland for help against the English.7 |
!AInfoNew | 22 March 1421 | He took part in the war and was present at the Battle of Beague, 22 March 1421. He visited James I of Scotland when in captivity in England.7 |
!AInfoNew | 1423 | He was granted the lands of Alford by Alexander, Earl of Mar in 1423. Granted a new charter for the lands and Barony of Forbes Oct 16, 1423 by Regent, Murdoch of Albany. Granted the lands of Meikle Fintray Dec 1423 by John, Earl of Buchan, Elizabeth's first cousin once removed. Granted the lands of Easter Cluny in 1425 by William, Earl of Angus, Elizabeth's brother. Granted the lands of Alford and Edinbanchory, the lands and Barony of Forbes, the lands of Kearn and others in the Earldom of Mar, 6 October 1431.5 |
Marriage* | October 1423 | Alexander Forbes , 1st Baron Fo(r)bes married Elizabeth Mary Douglas, daughter of George Douglas 1st Earl of Angus and Lady Mary Stewart, October 1423 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Tompsett gives this marriage but no children. The clan page gives the date of 1421. This seems a bit late. Other resources give a date of Oct 1423. So there is NO agreement as to when this marriage occurred.7,4,6,8 |
!AInfoNew | 1431 | Granted the lands of Ballindurno and half of Balshangy with the mill of Torquhonochy in 1431 by Elizabeth Keith, heiress of the barony of Aboyne in consideration for his help in establishing her right to her inheritance. Elizabeth's daughter who retained the inheritance married Sit Walter Seton who changed their name to Gordon and became a thorn in the side of the Lord Forbes for many centuries.5 |
!AInfoNew | 1440 | Any map of Aberdeenshire showing the castles and estates now or at one time in Forbes ownership is studded with a bewildering cluster of names. This profileration began in the time of Sir Alexander Forbes of Ilk, who is known to have been building his house of 'Drumynour' in 1440, a few years before being made Lord of parliament. The family branched into four great divisions through his three younger brothers; Sir William of Pitsligo, Sir John of Tolquhon and Alister of Brux.4 |
!AInfoNew | 1442 | He was made Lord of Parliment as Lord Forbes about 1442. He may have retained this post until July 1445.7,9 |
Death* | 1448 | Alexander Forbes , 1st Baron Fo(r)bes died in 1448 in Scotland. He was about 63-68 years old. He died leaving 5 children. In addition to James they had a daughter Annabella who was born after 1423, married by 1445 to Patrick Gray and a daughter Elizabeth who married Alexander Irving.2,4,9,10,3 |
