The cloth trade in Norton is chiefly associated with the water mills on the Wylye. (fn. 93) Both mills in the main part of the parish were used as fulling mills in the 16th century. Among clothiers who occupied them may be mentioned some early members of the Benett family, (fn. 94) Geoffrey Hawkins, who moved to Bishopstrow later in the 16th century, (fn. 95) and the Everetts of Heytesbury in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. (fn. 96) Robert Long, described as a clothier in 1753, (fn. 97) is probably to be identified with the owner of Butler's Coombe Farm. Weavers who lived in the village in the 17th and 18th centuries (fn. 98) must have worked either for the local clothiers or for masters in Warminster. A dyehouse adjoining Longbridge Fulling Mill was let in 1751. (fn. 99)

Mills (second paragraph)
Another fulling and corn mill in Norton was let by the Priory of Dartford in 1533 to Richard Bath alias Whitaker for 80 years. (fn. 11) The lease was assigned to John Benett, younger son of William (d. c. 1558), in 1560. (fn. 12) John's widow and her second husband underlet the mill to Geoffrey Hawkins of Norton, who 'planted himself there in the art of clothing'. (fn. 13) John's son William was able to buy in a reversion of the lease which was granted by the Crown in 1594, and he still held the mill in the early 17th century. (fn. 14) In 1609 the mill and a fishery in the river near it were granted to Edward Ferrers and Francis Philips at fee farm. (fn. 15) In 1611 William Benett of Norton made an agreement with William Benett of London that the latter should procure him a grant of the same mill, (fn. 16) and it is possible that it passed to him soon afterwards, although it is not certainly known to have belonged to the Benetts before the early 18th century. (fn. 17) In 1625 it was called Thresher's Mill from its occupier, Anthony Thresher. (fn. 18) In 1788 it was held on lives by Joseph Everett, (fn. 19) and it was still occupied by the Everett family in 1830. (fn. 20) It stood just above the bridge which carries the Sutton Veny road over the Wylye, where remains of the pond can still be seen.

MILLS. [Sutton Veny, Wilts. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=16078 ]
There were two mills at Sutton Veny at the time of the Domesday Survey. One belonged to the Little Sutton estate of William de Mohun, and the other was divided between the holders of the other two estates in Sutton, namely William son of Guy, who held 2/3, and Niel who held ?. (fn. 14) The mill belonging to the manor of Little Sutton was situated on the Wylye on the west side of the parish, and later became called Wylye Mill. The mill which was divided between William son of Guy and Niel was presumably the one later called Mount Mill, which also stood on the Wylye, northeast of the village. Mount Mill derived its name from the family of Mount...... About the middle of the 14th century Mount Mill was held by Walter atte Bergh, ....... In 1561 the mill was leased by Sir Walter Hungerford, Lord Walter's son, to Thomas Ashlock and his son, also called Thomas, (fn. 29) and in 1591 a 60-year lease was made to Geoffrey Hawkins, clothier, of Norton Bavant, on the surrender of a previous lease to Thomas Ashlock. (fn. 30) In 1765 the mill was advertised for sale as a fulling mill with 2 a. of watermeadow and 1a. of pasture. (fn. 31) The purchaser was probably Thomas Benett, of Norton Bavant, who owned it in 1771 and 1780. (fn. 32) It was still owned by the Benetts in 1830 when Joseph Everett, clothier of Heytesbury was the occupier......

In 1533 the manor house and farm of Bishopstrow were let for 99 years to Robert Abath, who had married a sister of Joan Temmes, the last Abbess of Lacock. In 1592 Clement Abath assigned the lease to Geoffrey Hawkins of Bishopstrow, clothier, and in 1613 Hawkins's widow and her second husband assigned it to John Temple of Kingston Deverill, whose son bought the freehold of the property. (fn. 25)[Joan's second husband was Robert Hippisley.]

Jacob Hawkins, b. about 1819 at Norton Bavant, married Louisa Marchment from Knook (in Heytesbury) October 6, 1849. Louisa was the daughter of Henry Marchment and Ann Perrior. A son, John Hawkins, a bricklayer, was born 1850 at Norton Bavant, and married Emily Sloper from Devizes in 1873.
There was talk of a sister of Jacob who had married and moved away from Wiltshire. So far as I know he had no brothers. My researches have thrown up a brother Tom for his son John Hawkins but I don't know what happened to him and whether he had any descendants.

The parish church in Sutton-Veny (one mile south of Norton Bavant) was St. Leonard's. It was replaced in 1868 due to subsidence. The current parish church is St. John The Evangilist. 26 Jan 2009.

The Jeffery & Dorthy (Mattock) Hawkins family, Quakers, arrived in Bucks County, PA, America in 1682 on the ship Welcome with Wm. Penn on his first visit to America.
The passenger list for the ship Welcome, arriving PA in October 1682, has never been found. Geo. E. McCracken in his Welcome Claimants Proved, Disproved and Doubtful published in 1970, lists in his analysis of Proved the Hawkinss Jeffrey, Dorothy, Roger, James, Daniel, Jeffrey, Susanna and Elizabeth. Those he considered as proved he had found letters, deeds, meeting minutes, court records, etc. on to confirm their existence. He lists also Hawkinss Roger and Sarah as Possible as there are records of their presence in PA in that immediate time frame. James, not in the parish register, must have been born in 1681 or 1682. Jane was almost certainly aboard as she is also in the PA Quaker records. It is my opionon that the girls, Susanna and Eliszabeth, were daughters of Roger and Sarah.
There is no record of the children Margaret, John, and Sarah. Possibly they sucombed to smallpox on the voyage (30% of the 100+ crew and passengers did). Margaret would have been 18 when they departed in 1682. Maybe she married and remained in England.

John Hawkins, a bricklayer, was b. 1850 at Norton Bavant (registered in the Longbridge Deverill subdistrict of Warminster, Wiltshire by his mother, who was living at Norton Bavant at that time), and married Emily Sloper (daughter of George & Elizabeth (Stockwell) Sloper) from Devizes (at the Register Office in Devizes) November 17, 1873. His father was Jacob Hawkins, b. about 1819 at Norton Bavant, who married Louisa Marchment from Knook in 1849. Louisa was the daughter of Henry Marchment and Ann Perrior.
My researches have thrown up a brother Tom for John Hawkins but I don't know what happened to him and whether he had any descendants.

Transcribers notes:
I have left a lot of the spelling as it is in the original.
Spelling in 1594 was done according to the sound of the word, so reade for sound not spelling.
 Punctuation is almost non-existent.
Each line here was a single line in the original.
 [my inserts]
 Roman numerals: x = 10, v = 5, i and j =1. Add together for total (xvij = 17).
Money: = English pounds (= 20s), s = schilling (= 12 d), d = pence. [In 1971 the British Pound was decimalized. The shilling was dropped, and there are now 100 pence (symbol now p and referred to as "pee's") in a pound.]
Also, filed with the will was the inventory of which I also received a copy.

Concerning the Mount Mills willed by this Richard to his son James. From: 'Sutton Veny', A History of the County of Wiltshire: Volume 8: Warminster, Westbury and Whorwellsdown Hundreds (1965), pp. 61-74. "The mill which was divided between William son of Guy and Niel was presumably the one later called Mount Mill, which also stood on the Wylye, northeast of the village. Mount Mill derived its name from the family of Mount... ......in 1591 a 60-year lease was made to Geoffrey Hawkins, clothier, of Norton Bavant,..."
It would seem that this is a pretty strong indication that this Richard had a relationship with Geoffrey Hawkins of Bishopstrow, d. 1603. Phillip A. Hawkins

[Tuition Bond
In historical Wills, a tuition bond could be drawn up to arrange for a guardian or tutor to provide for the unmarried infant children of the deceased, bring them up appropriately, and administer their goods faithfully. Notwithstanding their fathers' Wills, girls aged 12 and boys aged 14 could appoint their own guardians. http://www.interwills.co.uk/glossary/t/tuition-bond.html]
