Methods such as these were obviously lacking in the early days, and as a result except were enterprising progress associations have had them changed, there are a great number of towns throughout Australia bearing ludicrously incongruous and unpicturesque names bestowed on them by unpoetic pioneers. O.K., an old copper town 50 miles from Mungana [Queensland], is a typical example. At one time it had about 800 inhabitants, and was considered of no small importance; yet it was names after a jam tin. Bananas do not grow in Banana, Central Queensland, the appellation being given the town by a teamster whose bullock of that name became bogged in the vicinity. The town to-day is the civic centre of a vast shire; that the name still sticks. Baking Board [Queensland] derived its name from a flat board on stumps erected by a teamster. Cutthroat was, in the early days, principally a sawmilling settlement, but was particularly noted for the gambling propensities of its floating population. In East Gippsland [Victoria] is a small town which bears the name of W. Tree. It got its name from a tree which grew on the site in the early days, its resemblance to the letter W acting as an efficient signpost. Letters intended for West Tree, Willow Tree, and Wattle Tree find their way to the little town. In New South Wales names which inspire wonder are Agnes Banks, Berembed City, Colin Smi..? and Come-by-Chance: while still stranger are Hopping Dick, Burnt Yards, Finger Post, Running Stream, Home Rule, Howlong, Wee Jasper, and Terry Hie Hie. " Kingsley Temple" maybe the author perhaps!! Cheers Bev PS There you go, even I learn something every day. F.G. BARTLETT, 30, admitted 16th December, died 29th December. Bridget GLEESON, 42, admitted 21st October, died 29th December. Grace GORDON, 60, admitted 16th October, died 31st December. John DICKSON, 63, admitted 30th December, died 31st December. Elizabeth RICKER, 60, admitted 28th December, died 31st December. Alexander MITCHELL, 34, admitted 31st December, died 2nd January. Frederick Thomas PADDON, 48, admitted 2 January, died 6th January. William WEST, 18 years of age, employed as a groom at the residence of Mr. J. THORN, of Highgate Hill, attempted to commit suicide on Saturday night by hanging. No reason is assigned for the act. Mr. THORN going into WEST'S room was horrified to find WEST hanging by a clothes line to a beam in the roof. He was immediately cut down, and the police being communicated with he was conveyed to the watchhouse. After medical examination by Dr. CONNOLLY, acting for Dr. TILSTON, WEST was sent to the reception-house, as he was found to be deranged. Frederick BURNE, aged 11 years: John KING, aged 4 years; and a boy of 6 years named MILLAR, left their homes on the South side on Sunday morning and wandered to the river bank at the end of Sidon-street and immediately above the Dry Dock. Here they stripped and BURNE and KING waded into the river. MILLAR remained on the bank. The boys soon got beyond their depth, and BURNE sank. KING was struggling in the water when his cries and those of MILLAR attracted the attention of a man named W. SISK, who jumped into the river and rescued KING. The body of young BURNE was recovered next day. Theresa BYRNE, aged 14 years, while bathing in the river above Normandy Bridge yesterday week, felt something stinging her finger, and saw that the latter was bleeding from two punctured wounds [says the Gympie Miner]. She took no further notice of it, but on the road home she was overcome by drowsiness and stupor. Dr. CUPPAIDGE was called in to see her. He at once recognised the symptoms as those of snake bite poisoning, and treated the case by the injection of strychnine. It was not until after 18 drops of liquid strychnia were injected into the arm that any improvement in the girl's condition was observed. On Saturday morning she appeared to have quite recovered. The following deaths occurred in the Dunwich Asylum for the week ending 2nd instant:-- William BRASSELL [49], native of Cork, Ireland. Henry John ELDER [24], native of Antrim, Ireland. Messrs. B.D. MOREHEAD and Co. advise having booked the following passengers per R.M.S. Ophir, which left Sydney on the 4th instant for London, via usual ports, namely:--Mesdames John ELLIS and child and C.S.D. MELBOURNE, Miss MELBOURNE, Messrs. A.L. WITHERS, F. BARKER, John ELLIS, Wm. E. BAKER, John WEIR, Ernest E. BOOTH, and Dr. Wm. LITTLE. The excise inspector [Mr. M'MAHON] made a seizure of liquor on Saturday, together with a horse, harness, and cart, on the Montague-road, West End. It is said the liquor, consisting of bottled ale, stout, wine and spirits, was being carted about for sale by a man named URQUHART, and was seized by the inspector under the 112th section of the licensing Act. The following persons have been adjudicated insolvent during the week:--Wm. STUART, of Roma, bootmaker. Henry Theo. KREIBKE, of Mitchell, storekeeper. George BROWNLEE, of Sandgate, blacksmith. Charles Andrew SWEEDMAN, of Brisbane, mariner. George WATSON, of South Brisbane, labourer. William Daniel COSSHMAN, of Brisbane, commission agent. Walter BERTRAND, of Brisbane, draftsman. Alfred George JACKSON, of Brisbane, electrician. Catherine Wilhelmina WALTER, of Brisbane. Woman Killed by Her Husband Sydney, April 14 A shocking murder was committed to-day at Surry Hills. An old man named Maurice DALTON, battered his wife to death with a branding iron. the man is 72 years of age and his wife was about twenty years his junior. They had been living for some time past in a house situated at No. 1 Foveaux-street, Surry Hills. Though old, DALTON is still vigorous, but too lazy to do any work, and for many years he has lived upon his wife's exertions. She took in lodgers and also did a good deal of needlework. In spite of all the favours he received at her hands he was anything but grateful, and, according to statements of the lodgers and neighbours, there were continual bickerings between the pair. This morning Mrs. ARTHUR, one of the lodgers, heard DALTON and his wife quarreling, but, as it seemed to be only wordy warfare, she did not interfere, Shortly afterwards DALTON left the house, and about dinner time Mrs. ARTHUR went into Mrs. DALTON'S room, but she was not there. Opening the kitchen door, Mrs. ARTHUR saw the woman lying on the floor in a pool of blood. She alarmed the neighbours, and the police were immediately communicated with. Taken from the Queenslander, Brisbane, Saturday, 16 January, 1892Current News [page 138]By Telegraph and OtherwiseIn Chambers on Wednesday, before Justice REAL, the following matters were disposed of:-- KRUTH v. KRUTH: application for alimony. Mr. Gore JONES for the petitioner; the respondent,Mr. KRUTH, appeared in person. An order was made for alimony ''pendente lite', at the rate of £3 per week from the 4th January, 1892, until any further order is made. WEBB v. MILLIS: Mr. FITZGERALD , for the plaintiff, appeared to oppose a restraining order; an order was granted as prayed for; costs to be costs in the cause. M'KERNAN v. BUCAS: Mr. FOX for the plaintiff and Mr. HELLICAR for defendant. This was an application for leave to sign final judgement, and an order was given for leave to defend. Queensland Deposit Bank v. JACKSON: Mr. HAWTHORN [MACDONALD-PATERSON and HAWTHORN] applied for leave to sign final judgement, and an order was granted as prayed. Castlemaine Brewery Company v. FERGUSON: Mr. HALLEY [HART and FLOWER] appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. A. HARRISON for the defendant. Leave was given to defend as to £13, and judgement was given for the balance, with costs. The following account of a case of snakebite was telegraphed to the Age on Sunday week from Yackandandah:-- On Wednesday the daughter of Mr. James TREBILCOCK, at Tawonga, 14 years of age, while walking through one of her father's paddocks, was bitten on the right leg by a large brown snake, the size of which may be surmised from the two punctures being fully a quarter inch apart. Mr. TREBILCOCK being close at hand with a horse and cart the girl was taken home. After a tight ligature had been tied above the bite, Mr. TREBILCOCK injected one-twelfth of a grain of strychnine, and as the symptons increased he injected another one-twelfth very shortly afterwards. The child then commenced to vomit freely, but had lost the use of her legs and could not see. These alarming symptoms determined the parents to start at once with their daughter for Yackandandah, a distance of thirty-five miles. Mr. TREBILCOCK took the precaution of taking antidote with him and it was fortunate that he did so, for during the journey the girl collapsed twice, and had to be aroused twice each time by an injection. She had rallied completely when the party reached Yackandandah, and Mr. TREBILCOCK had the satisfaction of learning from Dr. MUELLER that he had done as well as any medical man could have done under the circumstances, and that his daughter was out of danger, and was only required watching through the night. On Thursday morning the child was completely restored, and only showed the two punctures on the leg. There was no excision of the bitten part.
